Opis:
The influence of different tillage and fertilization practices on changes in soil pH and sorptive parameters of loamy haplic Luvisol was evaluated in a long-term field experiment (established in 1994, in the locality of Dolná Malanta, at the experimental station of the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra). The field experiment included two types of soil tillage (conventional tillage – CT and reduced tillage – RT) and also three treatments of fertilization (1. Co – control, 2. PR+NPK – crop residues together with added NPK fertilizers, and 3. NPK – with added NPK fertilizers). The soil was sampled from all treatment sites throughout 1994-2011. The results showed a statistically significant influence of tillage and fertilization on pH and sorptive complex of haplic Luvisol. The values of pH were higher (by 4%) in RT than in CT. The sum of basic cations (SBC), cation exchangeable capacity (CEC) and base saturation (BS) were all higher in RT, by 11%, 8% and 3% respectively, than in CT. In NPK (by 16%) and in PR+NPK (by 20%) the values of hydrolytic acidity (Ha) were decreased in comparison to the control. On the other hand, SBC was elevated. This led to the increase of CEC and BS. Conventional tillage and application of crop residues together with NPK fertilizers increased pH by 0.06 and 0.03 units per year, respectively, which means that the pH in the soil increased by14% and 8%, correspondingly, between 1994 and 2011. In CT and in PR+NPK, an increase of SBC occurred at an average rate of 3.17 and 1.93 mmol kg-1 year-1, respectively. A positive correlation between the content of soil organic carbon (TOC) and Ha (r = 0.334, P ≤ 0.01, n = 54), as well as a negative correlation between TOC and BS (r = -0.307, P ≤ 0.05, n = 54) were determined only in CT.

Opis:
Biochar usually has a neutralizing effect, therefore, it is recommended for application to acid soils due to its potential to increase soil pH. The aims of this study were (1.) to quantify the role of different rates of biochar and biochar in combination with N fertilization on change of soil pH, and (2.) to evaluate the dynamic changes of soil pH in relation with doses of biochar and biochar with N fertilization. A field experiment was conducted with different biochar application rates: B0 control (0 t ha-1), B10 (10 t ha-1) and B20 (20 t ha-1) and 0, 40 and 80 kg N ha–1 of nitrogen fertilizer (N0, N40, N80) on silt loam Haplic Luvisol at the locality of Dolná Malanta (Slovakia) in 2014. Their effects were investigated after vegetation season of spring barley and spring wheat (once a month: from April to July) in 2014 and 2016, respectively. Experimental results indicate that the soil pHH2O in B0N0, B10N0, B20N0, B10N40, B20N40, B10N80 and B20N80 were 6.23, 6.45, 6.60, 6.77, 6.48, 6.36 and 6.60, respectively. The results of LSD test showed statistically significant differences between soil pH in control treatment and treatments with biochar and biochar with N fertilization. The most significant effect on increase of soil pH was observed in B10N40. During whole period, after application of biochar and biochar with N fertilization the values of pHKCl were gradually decreased in all treatments.

Opis:
The studies on iron and aluminium forms and soil forming processes quantification in Chernozems were conducted in two localities in Western Slovakia. Two soil pits were done in a complex of arable Haplic Chernozems in Krakovany and two soil pits representing arable and forest Cambic Chernozems were done in Báb. The soils were sampled every 10 cm and analysed using standard methods. Based on analytical results, profile development indices (PDI) were calculated for each profile. Chernozems in Krakovany were characterised by 90 cm (Krakovany 1) and 80 cm (Krakovany 2) thick solums and pH increasing with depth from neutral to alkaline. The content of total organic carbon (TOC) was up to 13.70 g kg⁻¹ in both profiles. Cambic Chernozems in Báb were characterised by a lower thickness of solum – 40 cm in arable soil (Báb 1) and 70 cm in forest soil (Báb 2). Reaction of arable soil ranged from slightly acid to alkaline, and in the case of forest soil – from strongly acid to alkaline. Arable soil contained 14.2-14.5 g kg⁻¹, and forest soils 12.9-50.7 g kg⁻¹ of TOC in A horizons. The content of Fet in the studied soils ranged from 21.78 to 32.48 g kg⁻¹, free iron oxides (Fed) – from 5.74 to 11.53 g kg⁻¹, and amorphous iron oxides (Feo) – from 0.77 to 2.94 g kg⁻¹. Fed/Fet ratios ranged from 0.26 to 0.39. Crystalline forms predominated over amorphous ones. The values of PDI were relatively low, namely 1.50 – in the profile Krakovany 1; 1.76 – in the profile Krakovany 2; 1.15 in the profile Báb 1 and 2.12 – in the profile Báb 2.
Artykuł prezentuje wyniki badań nad zawartością form żelaza i glinu oraz kwantyfikacją procesów glebotwórczych w czarnoziemach zachodniej Słowacji. Dwa profile uprawnych czarnoziemów typowych zlokalizowano w miejscowości Krakovany, a dwa kolejne, reprezentujące uprawne i leśne czarnoziemy z poziomem cambic w miejscowości Báb. Zawierały one do 13,70 g kg⁻¹ węgla organicznego w obydwu profilach. Czarnoziemy z poziomem cambic w miejscowości Báb charakteryzowały się mniejszą miąższością solum, wynoszącą 40 cm w profilu gleby uprawnej (Báb 1) i 70 cm w profilu gleby leśnej (Báb 2). Odczyn gleb uprawnych mieścił się w przedziale od słabo kwaśnego do zasadowego, a leśnych od silnie kwaśnego do zasadowego, wykazując tendencję wzrostową wraz z głębokością. Gleby uprawne zawierały 14,2-14,5 g kg⁻¹, a gleby leśne 12,9-50,7 g kg⁻¹ węgla organicznego. Zawartość żelaza ogółem (Fet) w badanych glebach wynosiła od 21,78 do 32,48 g kg⁻¹, żelaza wolnego (Fed) 5,74-11,53 g kg⁻¹, a jego amorficznych form (Feo) 0,77-2,94 g kg⁻¹. Wartości stosunków Fed/Fet, wynosiły 0,26-0,39. W puli żelaza wolnego dominowały tlenki krystaliczne. Uzyskane wartości wskaźnika PDI były stosunkowo niskie, wynosząc 1,50 w profilu Krakovany 1, 1,76 w profilu Krakovany 2, 1,15 w profilu Báb 1 i 2,12 w profilu Báb 2.

Stability of soil aggregates is affected by dozens different factors and their individual effects are hardly discernable. For this reason, we investigated the structure of the top layer (to a depth 0.2 m) of loamy soils (Haplic Fluvisol, Mollic Fluvisol and Calcaric Chernozem), at three sites (Šulekovo, Trakovice and Bučany) in the north-western part of the Danube Lowlands (Slovakia) in order to: (1) evaluate the differences in soil organic matter (SOM), texture, water-stable aggregates (WSA) and content of SOM in WSA; (2) determine the relationships between SOM, texture and WSA; and (3) identify the threshold limits for soil organic carbon (SOC) and the particle-size distributions for stabilization of water-stable macro-aggregates (WSAma). We found significant effects of a soil type on both SOM and WSA as well as on the content of SOM in WSA. When all loamy soils were assessed together, positive significant correlations were observed between size fractions of WSAma >2 mm and the content of SOC and hot-water soluble carbon (CHWD). The content of WSAma 1-0.25 mm and water-stable micro-aggregates (WSAmi) correlated negatively with SOC and CHWD. The quality of SOM was more important than its quantity for the stabilization of WSAma at size fractions 1-0.25 mm and WSAmi. The content of clay improved the aggregation in size fractions of WSAma >2 mm in the investigated top layer of loamy soils. The maximum WSAma content occurred where the ratio of organic carbon content in WSAma to that in soil was ~1.0. The threshold limits for clay and silt content for the formation of WSAma were ~20% and equal to 43%, respectively.

Opis:
The studies on the content and profile distribution of carbon and nitrogen fractions of varied susceptibility to acid hydrolysis were performed in arable Haplic Chernozems and Mollic Fluvisols at four locations near Krakovany, Slovakia. The soils were sampled every 10 cm and analyzed, including the content of total organic carbon (TOC) and nitrogen (TN) and fractions of these elements after sequential extraction in 0.25 mol dm-3 KCl, 0.25 mol dm-3 H2SO4 and 2.5 mol dm-3 H 2SO4. Based on extractions, the content of easy hydrolyzable (EHC), hardly hydrolyzable (HHC) and nonhydrolyzable carbon (NHC) and the content of ammonium nitrogen (NH4-N), nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N), dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), easy hydrolyzable nitrogen (EHN), hardly hydrolyzable nitrogen (HHN) and nonhydrolyzable nitrogen (NHN) was calculated. Mollic Fluvisols were more abundant in TOC and TN as compared to Haplic Chernozems. The content of carbon and nitrogen fractions varied among the soils, showing correlations with the total content of these elements. A low contribution of EHC and HHC in TOC and NO3-N, EHN, HHN in TN and a large share of nonhydrolyzable fractions of these elements were characteristic features of the studied soils. In general, trends in HHC (as % of TOC) and NO3-N, NH4-N, EHN (as % of TN), increasing with depth with a simultaneous decrease of NHN were observed. A-horizons of Haplic Chernozems were characterized by a higher contribution of EHN, NH4-N and NO3-N in TN, but a lower share of NHN as compared to Mollic Fluvisols.

Comparative studies on the content and profile distribution patterns of phosphorus fractions in arable and forest Cambic Chernozems were conducted near the village Báb (western Slovakia). Soil samples were collected from every 10 cm and analyzed using standard procedures in soil science. Long term differences in the type of the studied soils usage were reflected in their physical and chemical properties (bulk density, porosity, acidity, the total content of organic carbon and nitrogen), as well as in the content and profile distribution patterns of phosphorus fractions. Total phosphorus content ranged from 498.8 to 754.7 mg/kg in arable soil and from 480.4 to 835.9 mg/kg in forest soil. Residual fraction, which constituted 54.9−77.8% of total phosphorus in arable soil and 57.3−79.2% in forest soil, was a predominant fraction. Such large contribution of this fraction is typical for young soils, with weakly weathered mineral substrates. Exchangeable phosphorus in arable soil constituted 0.6−6.1%, while 0.5−3.0% in forest soil, showing decreasing trends with depth in both soils. Free iron oxides and carbonates were important factors influencing profile distribution of phosphorus in the investigated soils. Iron oxides bound the element mainly in acidified horizons, whereas carbonates in alakaline (Bw and C) horizons. Organic fraction significantly differed in the investigated soils. A much larger content and contribution of this fraction in total phosphorus was noticed in forest soil. The content of organic phosphorus was positively related to the content of organic carbon. Stable fraction of organic phosphorus predominated over labile one in both soils.

Mineral N fertilizer application may have an effect on soil organic matter and other soil parameters. Therefore, we studied the effects of different doses of N fertilization on soil organic matter and chemical properties of Haplic Luvisol in the locality of Dolná Malanta (Slovakia) during 2014–2016. Soil samples were collected from the plots exposed to the following treatments: 1. N0 – no N fertilization as control during 2014–2016, 2. N40 – N fertilizer at the rate of 40 kg N ha–1 in 2014 and 2016, 3. N80 – N fertilizer at the rate of 80 kg N ha–1 in 2014 and 2016, 4. N160 – N fertilizer at the rate of 160 kg N ha–1 in 2015, and 5. N240 – N fertilizer at the rate of 240 kg N ha–1 in 2015. The results showed that in N80 the soil organic carbon (SOC) content increased by 32% in comparison to N0. The addition of 80 kg ha-1 of N significantly decreased the humic substances (HS) content in the soil by 16% compared to N0. The higher doses of N fertilization 80 rather than 40 kg ha-1 as well as 240 rather than 160 kg ha-1 significantly decreased humus stability. The addition of N fertilization decreased the average values of soil pH. Values of hydrolytic acidity (Ha) increased by 41% and 46% in N40 and N80, respectively than N0, but on the other hand, this one decreased by 36% and 27% in N160 and N240, respectively in comparison to N0. Positive statistically significant correlations were determined between soil pH and SOC in N40 and N80 treatments. The increase of soil pH was connected with higher humus quality in N160 and N240. Negative correlations between humic acids (HA) and sum of basic cations (SBC) and cation exchange capacity (CEC) were observed in N80 < N160 < N240 treatments. Higher values of fulvic acids corresponded with lesser CEC in N80 and N160 treatments. In N160, with increased humus quality, CEC significantly decreased. The same effect was observed in N240. In addition, in N240, we also observed that with increased HA:FA ratio SBC and base saturation significantly decreased.

Opis:
The objective of the following three-year small-plot experiments was to determine the impact of a dose and application date of the biostimulator Mg-Tytanit (MgTi) on the formation of winter oilseed rape phytomass and its titanium cont ent. In the trial the biostimulant Mg-Tytanit containing 8.5 g of titanium in 1 liter was used. The experiment consisted of 5 treatments: 0 – control treatment without MgTi; 2xTi0.2 – two applications of MgTi in the dose of 0.2 dm3 ha-1; 3xTi0.2 – three applications of MgTi in the dose of 0.2 dm3 ha-1; 2xTi0.4 – two applications of MgTi in the dose of 0.4 dm3 ha-1; 3xTi0.4 – three applications of MgTi in the dose of 0.4 dm3 ha-1. The BS was applied in spring during two or three different growth stages: BBCH 50, BBCH 59, BBCH 66. The first plant sampling was carried out shortly before the first application of BS (BBCH 50). The second, third and fourth sampling were taken 2 – 3 weeks after the application of Mg-Tytanit (BBCH 59, BBCH 66, BBCH 71). The results showed that the biostimulator MgTi, regardless of its dose and application date, resulted in a higher weight of the aerial and underground phytomass. All the MgTi applications had impact on the winter oilseed rape yield increase. The seed yield was increased by 0.3 to 0.63 t ha-1. Higher yields were achieved in the treatments where MgTi was applied three times in comparison with the treatments, where it was used twice. The oil content in rape seeds was increased significantly only if MgTi was used in the total doses 0.8 and 1.2 dm3 ha-1 in the single application dose 0.4 dm3 ha-1. The oil content value was increased by 0.94 % and by 0.82 %. The oil production per hectare was increased after each use of MgTi, i.e. regardeless of the dose and date of its application. The highest Ti content in the aerial phytomass was 68.5 mg kg-1 and in the underground phytomass it was 247.1 mg kg-1.

Opis:
Since tillage technologies considerably influence soil properties and have a major impact on soil sustainability, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of conventional (CT) and reduced (RT) tillage on basic soil chemical properties at selected Slovak agricultural farms. Subsequently, the relationships between the chemical properties and soil organic matter (SOM) in both tillage technologies were ascertained. Differences in soil properties between long-term RT and CT were investigated at the adjacent plots on thirteen sites, where six soil pits were excavated on each RT and CT plots. Soil samples were collected from all pits, for each 0.1 m layers from the depth of 0.0-0.4 m. The results revealed that the regular overturn of topsoil, and thus the transfer of leached base cations to the surface layer, as well as deeper incorporation of crop residues and fertilizers in the soil cultivated conventionally has been manifested by higher values of pH, lower hydrolytic acidity (H) and the almost uniform content of base cations (mainly in the layer 0.0-0.3 m) compared to the soil cultivated by RT. Apart from H,, none of the examined sorption properties and pH differed significantly between the compared tillage technologies. Therefore, H can be considered as an important indicator of the change of basic chemical soil characteristics. While in RT, there was a significant correlation only between labile SOM fractions and basic soil chemical properties, in CT the sorption parameters and pH were influenced by labile and also stable SOM.

Opis:
Nowadays in scientific literature many opposing data are presented of the impacts of vermicompost extract on the quantity and quality of crop production. Therefore, the principal objective of two independent experiments was to study the effects of vermi extracts, which were applied before maize sowing into soil and during the growing season on the maize leaves, on its phytomass formation. The first, field experiment consisted of 9 variants. Variant 1 was the control one without the extract application. We studied the effect of the rising doses (90, 130, 170, 210 dm3.·ha-1) of vermi-extract applied into soil before the maize sowing in the variants E1, E2, E3, E4. In the variants E1+E, E2+E, 3+E, E4+E along with the rising doses of vermi-extract was also applied the uniform dose of vermi-extract (40 dm3·ha-1) at the growth stage BBCH 15. The second, pot experiment was pursued in the vegetation cage and comprised 3 variants: variant 1 was the control, in the variants 2 and 3 the foliar application of vermi-extract was used. The vermi-extract was applied once (growth stage BBCH 12) in the variant 2 and in the variant 3 it was used twice (at growth stages BBCH 12 and BBCH 16). The achieved results show that the vermi-extract applied in the presowing period in-creased the yield of maize grains if the application doses were 130–170 dm3·ha-1. The positive or negative impact of the foliar application by vermi-extract on the yield of maize grains depended on the period of application and the grown cultivar. In order to increase the starch content in grains it was more suitable to carry out the presowing ver-miextract application than during the growing season. The presowing application and the foliar application of vermi-extract tended to decrease the nitrogen content in grain. The foliar application of vermi-extract had the positive impact on the plant height and stalk thickness of the maize plants only in short term. The information obtained from the first half of maize growing season related to the plant height and stalk thickness was not the appropriate indicator for the assessment of maize grain yields.

Opis:
Since biochar is considered to be a significant source of carbon, in this work we have evaluated the changes in soil organic matter (SOM) and soil structure due to application of biochar and biochar with N fertilization, and have considered the interrelationships between the SOM parameters and the soil structure. The soil samples were collected from Haplic Luvisol at the locality of Dolná Malanta (Slovakia) during 2017. The field experiment included three rates of biochar application (B0 – no biochar, B10 – biochar at the rate of 10 t ha-1, B20 – biochar at the rate of 20 t ha-1) and three levels of N fertilization (N0 – no nitrogen, N160 – nitrogen at the rate of 160 kg ha-1, N240 – nitrogen at the rate of 240 kg ha-1). The rate of biochar at 20 t ha-1 caused an increase in the organic carbon (Corg) content. The combination of both rates of biochar with 160 and 240 kg N ha-1 also caused an increase in Corg. In the case of B20 the extractability of humic substances carbon (CHS) was 17.79% lower than at B0. A significant drop was also observed in the values of the extraction of humic acids carbon (CHA) and fulvic acids carbon (CFA) after the addition of biochar at a dose of 20 t ha-1 with 160 kg N ha-1. However, both rates of biochar had a significant effect at 240 kg N ha-1. After application of 20 t ha-1 of biochar the content of water-stable macro-aggregates (WSAma) significantly increased compared to control. This rate of biochar also increased the mean weight diameter (MWDW) and the index of water-stable aggregates (Sw) and decreased the coefficient of vulnerability (Kv). The biochar at a rate of 20 t ha-1 with 240 kg N ha-1 the value of MWDW increased and value of Kv decreased significantly. The contents of Corg and CL correlated positively with WSAma, MWDW and Sw and negatively with WSAmi and Kv. The extraction of CHA and CFA was in negative relationship with MWDW. We conclude that the application of biochar and biochar combined with N fertilizer had a positive influence on SOM and soil structure.
