Opis:
Hygiene plays an important role in patients who use removable dentures. The proper way of cleaning and storage also provides better health of oral cavity tissues as well as for the remaining teeth. The research involved 162 patients, 133 women and 29 men, aged 60–90, with different levels of education, the majority with secondary education. All patients were using removable dentures. 85.8% declared earlier use of dentures, and a half of the patients had used dentures for no more than 7.5 years. A considerable percentage (33.95%) used dentures for the whole day. Storing in a container with fluid was used by 25.93% of the respondents. Over 70% used toothpaste to clean their dentures and about 14% immersed them in special preparations, e.g. CoregaTabs, while over 8% used soap. Among patients who cleaned their dentures, the majority cleaned them once a week (75%) and the minority – twice a week (25%). The greatest percentage of patients cleaned their dentures with a toothbrush and toothpaste, which is not recommended due to occurring microabrasions. It is recommended that patients should be educated regarding prosthesis hygiene and regular follow-ups.

Opis:
Purpose: Thermoplastic materials, such as acetal (AC) and polyamide (PA), constitute an alternative to polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) based resins as the materials for removable partial dentures. However, none of the previous studies compared chewing efficiency and occlusal forces in the wearers of dentures made of various materials. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine and compare the chewing efficiency and occlusal forces in PMMA, PA and AC RPDs’ wearers. The hypothesis was that the type of denture base material shows a significant effect on chewing efficiency (expressed as a degree of food fragmentation) and occlusal force. Methods: The experiment included the group of 30 patients using removable partial dentures. The dentures made of PMMA, acetal and polyamide were tested in each patient. Each denture was worn for 90 days, with a random sequence of the denture manufacturing and insertion. After 7, 30 and 90 days of each denture wear, chewing efficiency coefficient was determined with the aid of a sieving method, and occlusal force was measured with a dynamometer. Results: The use of dentures made of PMMA or acetal was reflected by a marked increase in chewing efficiency and occlusal force. None of these parameters changed significantly with the time of denture wear. Moreover, no significant correlation was found between chewing efficiency and occlusal forces. Conclusions: Denture base material exerts significant effects on the degree of food fragmentation and the level of occlusal forces. The use of dentures and clasps made of materials with lower modulus of elasticity is associated with lower chewing efficiency and lower occlusal forces.

Opis:
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań doświadczalnych pomiarów sił rekcji w zębach oporowych w odniesieniu do sił żucia działających na protezę. Na specjalnie skonstruowanym stanowisku badawczym złożonym z układu obciążającego tensometrycznego przetwornika siły poddano obciążeniu wybraną protezę i dokonano pomiaru sił przenoszonych przez zęby oporowe. Zastosowano dwa schematy obciążenia w dwóch wybranych miejscach na powierzchniach żujących uzupełnionych zębów w bliskim sąsiedztwie zęba oporowego. Analiza stanu obciążenia pozwoliła zmierzyć wartości sił reakcji pionowych oraz ocenić kierunki sił poziomych działających na zęby filarowe.
The experimental studies of measuring of reaction forces on abutment teeth relative to mastication forces acting on a removable partial denture were carried out. A specially constructed experimental system consists of stand and strain gauges equipment, In this system loading was applied to a selected denture and forces transmitted by abutment teeth were measured. Two loads were applied in two selected places on the masticatory surfaces of denture teeth adjacent to the abutment teeth. The results of the study are presented in a table. The analysis of the load allowed to measure values of vertical reaction forces and to make conclucion about directions of horizontal forces acting on abutment teeth.

Opis:
Laboratory evaluation of spring constants (k) of wrought wire clasps (WWC) separated from removable partial denture (RPD) and the results of tibological tests which represent the dependence of enamel wear with normal force have been presented in the paper. The results of laboratory examinations have been combined with the results of clinical assessment of the level of abutment teeth wear. On the basis of the examinations performed it has been revealed that the following factors have the greatest impact on tribological wear of abutment teeth: the time of using RPD and the normal force exerted by WWC on abutment tooth. Normal force depends to a great extent on the place of contact of WWC with the tooth. It has also been found that abutment teeth featuring higher scale of wear are more loosened. The diameter of wire used for making WWC, total length of the arm and k determined for the total length of the arm did not have any impact upon the scale of wear of abutment teeth.

Opis:
The surface roughness of the dental restorations is significant to the denture plaque adhesion. Methods: In this work, we present the complex analysis of the electropolished CoCrW alloy remanium® star (Dentaurum, Germany) samples with laserengraved fiducial marks performed using complementary set of micro- and nanoscopic techniques: optical profilometry (OP), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and focused ion beam (FIB) milling. Results: Both mean and RMS roughness of the samples were reduced by electopolishing process, however, the results obtained using OP and AFM exhibited some discrepancies. This was caused by the relatively high local protruding defects developed on the processed surface. The cross-sections of the protrusions were made to analyze the cause of their formation as the EDS elemental content maps revealed that their composition was uniform. We also analyzed the local roughness in the smaller areas free from the defects. Conclusions: In that case, both OP and AFM techniques delivered the same results. Analysis of results showed that various methods used for the surface roughness evaluation have to be used simultaneously to obtain complete and true analysis of the technological CoCrW samples.
