Opis:
The fourth question in Lasswell’s model (to whom?) assumes a study and an analysis of media’s publicity and broader reception of the content. This reception should go personally or socially. The personal contexts include amongst others lifecycle and physical and mental limitations. The age plays an important role in media reception. The youth watches less television than the older people, who, on the contrary, are less likely to use electronic forms of communication. Another pattern here is that the older the man is, the longer he reads newspapers and magazines during the day. Important limitations in media reception are due to physical obstacles such as: poor sight and impaired hearing whereas the most significant mental obstacle is depression. The article presents also the problems of reception in a group, that is, when a person watches television or listens to the radio accompanied by other people. The presence of the others modifies all the process, there is a possibility of conversation and commenting the content. A spectacular example of reception in the group is watching football matches. Media can also be received in public space, open for everyone. Nowadays, public spaces are characterized by - as called by the scientists - a communication tyranny. Phone conversations are omnipresent and disturbs everybody. This is a kind of psychological pathology. Media reception depends on the culture, both personal and in a general sense. In Europe, there are differences between North and South that can be explained, among others, by religious factors (Protestantism vs. Catholicism). In the article- as practice shows – we mentioned main German studies, but also in a lesser extent - American and Polish ones. All of them relate to a more general problem of mediatisation and everyday life.

Consumers of culture. On the specific modes of soap opera’s interpretations on former socialist agrocooperatives milieus This paper discusses the reception of two popular TV series among socially excluded Polish women living in rural areas. It is based on the fi ndings of research project that I conducted from November of 2011 to March of 2012. I have conducted four focus groups combined with a projection of random episodes of two TV series: “M jak miłość” (“M as love”), the most popular soap opera in Poland, and an American program “Modern Family”, which breaks some social stereotypes. The main objective of the project was to fi nd out how socially excluded women decode social and ideological messages included in the TV series. According to Stuart Hall’s ‘encoding/decoding model’, I was focused on their common interpretation patterns. The main question was: are they able to understand the meanings of simple cultural symbols (e.g. a mustache, white briefs) or recognize popular actors and brands placed in a movie to the same extent as urban people? One other general question, which arises here, is if this popular culture is so popular?

Seen through the perspective of reception, the works of Witold Gombrowicz constitute a wide range of receptive proposals, selectively updated in the constant dynamic of the interactive discourse between the literary subject and the reader. The reader is invited in a covert partnership with his communication peer (the author–the producer) in their joint journey to the own polyphonic, unidentifiable, mutational ego. The relation to the self, as permanently disputed by otherness, finds its artistic application through the comic as the most powerful weapon against the Form, both in the field of the author and of the recipient.

It is said that Żeromski, one of the most influential Polish writers at the end of the nineteenth and at the beginning of the twentieth century, strongly affected Polish culture. The contributors of the book undoubtedly proved the thesis.

The subject of the article is the aesthetic reception of concrete poetry and the possibility of its use in foreign language classes. Reception aesthetics concentrates on the reception of the work and not its production. Concrete poetry works on sight and hearing, combines decoding of letters with visual perception and creates special opportunities for aesthetic reception in foreign language classes. The article draws attention to the phenomenon of text communication. The historical background and the first attempts to experiment with concrete poetry are discussed. Works of concrete poetry bring together aesthetics and didactics, which justifies their use in class. The functions and objectives of working with concrete poetry in the lesson are discussed and examples of works included in textbooks and examples of lesson scenarios are given.

Opis:
This presentation will deal with the reception of performances, translations and retranslations of Shakespeare’s plays into the Galician language. As is well-known, Galician is a Romance language which historically shared a common origin with Portuguese in the Iberian Peninsula, and which had a different evolution due to political reasons, i.e. the independence of Portugal and the recentralization of Spain after a long partition with the so called Catholic monarchs. As a consequence, Galician ceased to be the language of power and culture as it was during the Middle Ages, and was spoken by peasants and the lower classes in private contexts for centuries. With the disappearance of Francoism in the 1970s, the revival of Galician and its use as a language of culture was felt as a key issue by the Galician intelligentsia and by the new autonomous government formed in 1981. In order to increase the number of speakers of the language and to give it cultural respectability, translations and performances of prominent playwrights, and particularly those by Shakespeare were considered instrumental. This article will analyse the use of Shakespeare’s plays as an instrument of gentrification of the Galician language, so that the association with Shakespeare would confer a marginalized language social respectability and prestige.

Research on Czesław Miłosz’s works conducted in Lithuania, although not very intense, is mainly focused on the Lithuanian issues. One major trend prevails among Lithuanian re-searchers – an attempt to treat a substantial part of Miłosz’s works as autobiographical. Lithuanian translations of the works of Czesław Miłosz were explored in the article. The author poses the question whether works of the Nobel Laureate in any way shape and develop self-awareness of the inhabitants of Lithuania and if they help them to comprehend the diversity of the country as well as its complicated history, multiculturalism and multilingualism.

Joseph Conrad, Bulgarian critical reception, migrant writer
Opis:
This article examines the trends in Bulgarian critical appraisals of Conrad’s writing and the transformations they have undergone over the last hundred years. Though few in number, these appraisals are nevertheless profound and perceptive, keeping in focus the most essential messages of Conrad’s works, as well as the facts of the author’s remarkable life. The scope of these critical endeavours has long been of a rather limited nature, but in some of the articles there has definitely been a noticeable trend towards a monographic approach. The growing fascination with Conrad in Bulgaria became particularly evident during the celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of the writer’s birth. The Polish Institute in Sofia contributed significantly to this event, organizing university lectures and film projections – not only in the capital, but also in other parts of the country. In addition, the Warsaw 150th anniversary exhibition entitled “Twixt land and sea” was invited to Sofia (the co-author of the present article being one of those who took part in the opening ceremony). This heightened interest in Conrad – the man and the writer – is partly the result of current trends towards intensive cultural interaction and also a growing fascination with migrant writers coming from multicultural backgrounds. It may well be that these recent developments have contributed to the publication of two monographs on Conrad: Stefana Roussenova’s comparative study entitled Dialogues in Exile: Joseph Conrad, Vladimir Nabokov, Eva Hoffman (2010) – which addresses the problems of exile and migration in some of Conrad’s works – and Margreta Grigorova’s monograph entitled Joseph Conrad – the Creator as Seafarer (2011), which not only reviews the seminal achievements that have contributed to the expansion of Conrad studies in Bulgaria, but also builds on them and takes them to completion.

From the year 2000 onwards, the number of works by Witold gombrowicz translated into croatian has decisively increased. The above is followed by a plethora of critical articles: features, commentaries, reviews, academic research articles, etc. The present article focuses on the issue of correspondence between the literary text and its paratext(s) in the target language culture, their potential interdependence, and their consequent impact on the reception of gombrowicz’s work and the writer’s image. The analysis considers the factors contributing to gombrowicz’s growing presence in croatian cultural discourse.

Opis:
There are certain places throughout the world where ecumenical movements are born and have arisen out of the very essence the sociocultural realities of these places. The Cieszyn region of Silesia is such a place. In Cieszyn, different nationalities, cultures, and religions converge because the region both literally and symbolically contains many borders. Many Christian denominations peacefully coexist within Cieszyn, which is home to the largest community of Lutherans in Poland. The ecumenical movement within Cieszyn arose as a necessary and inevitable consequence of the coexistence of these Churches. For this reason, the Cieszyn region of Silesia is a perfect example of contemporary trends that are occurring within the ecumenical movement. Ecumenism in the Cieszyn region of Silesia has a very long and rich history that began more than five centuries ago, meaning long before the Second Vatican Council issued the Decree on Ecumenism Unitatis Redintegratio. Two Christian denominations—Roman Catholic and Lutheran—have coexisted in Cieszyn Silesia and, therefore, have become a symbol of an ecumenism based on faith and tolerance as well as survival and respect. Each of these represent the modern understanding of ecumenism today. The ecumenical movement can serve as a solid foundation that strengthens a sense of unity within local communities that share the same cultural and Christian roots so that these communities can achieve a common goal: to build a civilization of love, peace, and justice. Based on the examples of ecumenical relationships at work provided in this article, it is possible to say that the wise of “today” look back on “yesterday” in order to build a better “tomorrow.” Therefore, it is safe to assert that an ecumenism well-lived in the present that is also firmly rooted in history is a source of hope for the future of Christian Churches and communities. When presenting how the multi-denominational population of Cieszyn Silesia received the Decree on Ecumenism Unitatis Redintegratio, a statement made by one of the most eminent Polish ecumenists, Father Prof. Wacław Hryniewicz, comes to mind: “An authentic reception can be achieved only when the partners differ from each other, because diversity enables the true relationship between giving and taking.”

Opis:
This essay examines the reception of the ten-year Complete Works translation project undertaken by the Finnish publishing company Werner Söderström Oy (WSOY) in 2004-13. Focusing on reviews published in the first and last years of the project, the essay details ongoing processes of Shakespeare (re-)canonization in Finland, as each new generation explains to itself what Shakespeare means to them, and why it continues to read, translate and perform Shakespeare. These processes are visible in comments from the series editors and translators extolling the importance of Shakespeare’s work and the necessity of creating new, modern translations so Finns can read Shakespeare in their mother tongue; in discussions of the literary qualities of a good Shakespeare translation, e.g. whether it is advisable to use iambic pentameter in Finnish, a trochaic language; and in the creation of publisher and translator “heroes,” who at significant cost to themselves, whether in money in terms of the publisher, or time and effort in terms of the translators, labour to provide the public with their Shakespeare in modern Finnish. While on the whole reviewers celebrated the new translations, there was some resistance to changes in familiar lines from older translations, such as Macbeth’s “tomorrow” speech, suggesting that there are nevertheless some limits on modernizing “classic” translations.

The article is an attempt to answer the question: what happens to a literary work – understood as Ingarden’s purely intentional objects – from the recipient’s perspective? And also: how do the images of objects arise in the minds of the audience and what are their properties? Transferring purely intentional objects to the recipient’s perspective changes their status: mental images of objects are subject to numerous fluctuations (based on emotions and cognitive processes). In this way they are transformed into forms that are non-permanent reflections of objects belonging to a literary work. Referring to Ingarden’s terminology, one might say that they become purely intentional reflections (or reflections of purely intentional objects). The article is an attempt to characterize and stratify them.
