Agile e-commerce systems are required in a world in which the environment and corporate strategy change rapidly. However structured form all approaches such as those provided by enterprise architectures (EA) are still required for large, global systems. It is suggested that the degree to which an EA framework allows for a cyclic alignment process should he assessed. This process involves both integration and feed back /exchange mechanisms among the component parts of an EA. A review of several proprietary EA frameworks shows all frameworks except for the Zachman architecture offer support for an integrating structure. Most link their constituent models with feed back and exchange channels, though some channels are unidirectional. None of the selected architectures, except for ARIS, have a discernible feed back loop to corporate requirements specification.

Studies investigating the motivation of L1 speakers of English to learn the national language of the host society they currently reside in remain rare, despite the exponential growth of such individuals residing in these nations this century. Previous such studies in South Korea have concluded that learning Korean as a second language (L2) is largely perceived as difficult, unnecessary and is therefore accompanied by experiences of demotivation and amotivation (see Gearing & Roger, 2018). However, these studies did not explicitly address demotivation and amotivation when examining experiences that affect the motivation to learn Korean of 14 English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instructors working in South Korean university language education centers (LECs). Therefore, this study investigates which learning experiences resulted in the amotivation of participants and how two participants who experienced demotivation employed strategies to remotivate themselves. Coding of semi-structured interviews and optional diaries found that despite intent, most participants displayed symptoms of both amotivation and demotivation. The main implication of this study is that in the absence of perceived necessity, affected individuals with insufficient internal motivation or vision to acquire Korean consequently attribute externally related demotivating experiences to pre-existing or resulting amotivation.

This paper attempts to sketch out a theoretical framework that addresses the particular needs of living heritage. ICCROM has been at the forefront of developing a conservation practice which addresses the concerns of living heritage such as religious and pilgrimage sites (e.g. Wijesuriya 2015; Wijesuriya, Thompson, and Court 2017), and others have considered the implications for the conservation process (e.g. Poulios 2014). However, to date there has been no attempt to develop a theoretical foundation for these practices. In place of the still-dominant understanding (at least as encountered in much Western practice) of historic buildings as primarily art-historical, this paper proposes a narrative approach that allows the site or building to remain within its cultural/religious context, including an acceptance of ongoing change. While the argument proceeds from Western sources, it invites dialogue with complementary understandings of the working of tradition from other regions of the world. Any theoretical model for living heritage must address the central question of how living buildings endure between generations, that is, their continuity between past, present and future. Since modernity entails a commitment to a radical discontinuity with the past, such an approach must engage with the resources of premodernity to develop (or perhaps return to) a non-modern understanding of tradition as developmental and creative (Author, 2017). The principal sources used in the investigation of this proposed narrative approach include Alasdair MacIntyre’s rehabilitation of tradition, Hans-Georg Gadamer’s development of philosophical hermeneutics and Paul Ricoeur’s work on narrative and time.
W artykule podjęto próbę określenia ram teoretycznych dla potrzeb żywego dziedzictwa. ICCROM jest liderem w opracowywaniu praktyk konserwatorskich w zakresie żywego dziedzictwa, jako miejsca kultu religijnego. Do tej pory nie podjęto jednak próby stworzenia podstaw teoretycznych dla tych praktyk. W miejsce wciąż dominującego definiowania (przynajmniej w większości zachodnich praktyk) obiektów zabytkowych głównie pod kątem ich historycznych wartości, niniejszy artykuł proponuje podejście narracyjne, które pozwala miejscom lub budynkom pozostać w ich kontekście kulturowym / religijnym, przy jednoczesnej akceptacji zachodzących zmian. Choć podejście to wywodzi się ze źródeł zachodnich, uznaje konieczność zrozumienia tradycji innych regionów świata. Każdy teoretyczny model dla żywego dziedzictwa musi odpowiadać na zasadnicze pytanie, w jaki sposób istniejące budynki przetrwają różnice pokoleń, to znaczy ciągłość między przeszłością, teraźniejszością i przyszłością. Ponieważ współczesność pociąga za sobą zobowiązanie do radykalnego zerwania z przeszłością, takie podejście musi angażować zasoby przednowoczesności, aby rozwinąć (a może przywrócić) nienowoczesne rozumienie tradycji jako rozwojowej i twórczej. Główne źródła wykorzystane w badaniu proponowanego podejścia narracyjnego obejmują rehabilitację tradycji Alasdaira MacIntyre'a, rozwój hermeneutyki filozoficznej Hansa-Georga Gadamera oraz prace Paula Ricoeura nad narracją i czasem.

Inspired by a plethora of multicultural, international influences – especially Russian literary sources – the twentieth-century English late-Modernist novelist and poet, Malcolm Lowry (1909-57) was stimulated by a prismatic, multifaceted approach to his writing. Although relatively under-rated and non-canonical, he was endowed with an effervescent, encyclopaedic, and eclectic mind-set which combined conceptions of temporal with spiritual, on the one hand, and terrestrial with cosmic dimensions of his environment, on the other. In reinterpreting his vision of the world, we encounter psychological, psychogeographic, and anthropological forces at work in his approach to what was to become Jacob Bronowski’s Ascent of Man. In tracing Malcolm Lowry’s life-long quest for a harmony to unite Man’s natural, supernatural, and celestial roots, we must embark upon a spiritual odyssey on a mystic mission to attain truth and salvation. This journey leads us to appreciate Lowry’s skilful synthesis – in his pursuit of souls and shamans – of the seemingly diverse domains of anthropology, psychoanalysis, the Cabbala, and even voodoo in his ethnopoetic novels, Under the Volcano and Dark as the Grave wherein my Friend is Laid (1945-68).

2021 marks the 90th anniversary of the adoption of the Athens Charter. This, the first international conservation charter, now forms part of the rapidly expanding collection of ‘doctrinal texts’ which undergirds modern conservation. Whatever its strengths and weaknesses, this collection provides a marker of collective identity and is crucial to the self-definition of our discipline. While they are rightly held in great affection, this paper argues that to approach this collection of texts uncritically risks producing unintended consequences, potentially including the destruction of important heritage. Precisely because of their enduring influence, it is essential that as a discipline conservation engages in knowledgeable criticism of its doctrinal texts, through an appropriate and hermeneutically literate reading.  This paper first considers the nature of doctrinal texts, before using the notion of ‘doctrine’ to explore some of the parallels and differences between doctrinal texts of a religious nature and those of conservation, and so to introduce the question of hermeneutics. This then leads to a discussion of the relation between theory and practice, and the notion, from Aristotle, of phronesis or practical wisdom. The paper then concludes with consideration of some of the implications conservation of adopting this approach.
W 2021 r. przypada 90. rocznica przyjęcia Karty Ateńskiej. Ta pierwsza międzynarodowa karta konserwatorska stanowi obecnie część szybko powiększającej się kolekcji "tekstów doktrynalnych", które leżą u podstaw współczesnej konserwacji zabytków. Niezależnie od swoich mocnych i słabych stron, zbiór ten stanowi wyznacznik tożsamości zbiorowej i ma kluczowe znaczenie dla samookreślenia naszej dyscypliny. Choć słusznie darzymy je wielkim sentymentem, w niniejszym artykule dowodzimy, że bezkrytyczne podejście do tego zbioru tekstów niesie ze sobą ryzyko niezamierzonych konsekwencji, w tym potencjalnie zniszczenia ważnego dziedzictwa. Właśnie ze względu na ich nieprzemijający wpływ, istotne jest, by jako dyscyplina konserwatorska zaangażowała się w świadomą krytykę swoich tekstów doktrynalnych, poprzez odpowiednią i hermeneutyczną lekturę. W artykule rozważono najpierw naturę tekstów doktrynalnych, a następnie wykorzystano pojęcie doktryny do zbadania niektórych podobieństw i różnic między tekstami doktrynalnymi o charakterze religijnym a tekstami konserwatorskimi, wprowadzając w ten sposób kwestię hermeneutyki. Prowadzi to następnie do dyskusji na temat relacji między teorią a praktyką oraz arystotelesowskiego pojęcia phronesis, czyli mądrości praktycznej. Artykuł kończy się rozważaniami na temat niektórych implikacji konserwatorskich przyjęcia tego podejścia.

In England, accessibility to historic buildings falls under the Equality Act 2010, for which a key concept is the making of ‘reasonable adjustments’ to physical features of a building; this acknowledges that a blanket application of technical requirements would be detrimental to some historic buildings, and that equal access may not be achievable in every case. This paper approaches accessibility in historic buildings in England from two angles. The first is a consideration of two separate guidance documents, from Historic England and from the Church of England respectively; each document is outlined, offering points of comparison with guidance in other jurisdictions. One consistent theme in these documents is the positive framing of accessibility as of benefit not only for those with disabilities, but also for all users and potentially for the heritage itself. The second aspect of the paper comprises three case study projects from my own practice, spread across a range of building types, ages, and grades of protection, which together demonstrate by example some of what is currently considered possible in England, and illustrate how practice relates to policy and guidance. The paper ends by briefly reflecting on what light accessibility policy might shed on some broader questions of heritage concern.
W Anglii dostępność budynków zabytkowych podlega Ustawie o równości z 2010 roku, dla której kluczowym pojęciem jest dokonywanie "rozsądnych zmian" w fizycznych cechach budynku; ustawa uznaje, że powszechne stosowanie wymagań technicznych byłoby szkodliwe dla niektórych budynków zabytkowych i że równy dostęp może nie być osiągalny w każdym przypadku. Niniejszy artykuł podchodzi do kwestii dostępności w budynkach zabytkowych w Anglii z dwóch punktów widzenia. Pierwszym z nich jest rozważenie dwóch odrębnych dokumentów zawierających wytyczne, odpowiednio od Historic England i Church of England; każdy z nich jest przedstawiony w zarysie, oferując punkty porównania z wytycznymi w innych jurysdykcjach. Jednym ze spójnych tematów w tych dokumentach jest pozytywne ujęcie dostępności jako korzyści nie tylko dla osób niepełnosprawnych, ale także dla wszystkich użytkowników i potencjalnie dla samego dziedzictwa. Drugi aspekt artykułu obejmuje trzy projekty studium przypadku z mojej własnej praktyki, obejmujące różne typy budynków, wiek i stopnie ochrony, które razem pokazują na przykładach to, co obecnie uważa się za możliwe w Anglii i ilustrują, jak praktyka odnosi się do polityki i wytycznych. Artykuł kończy się krótką refleksją nad tym, jakie światło polityka dostępności może rzucić na pewne szersze kwestie związane z dziedzictwem.

Dynamic difficulty adjustment (DDA) in digital games involves altering the difficulty of a game based on real-time feedback from the player. Some approaches to DDA use measurements of player performance, such as success rate or score. Such performance-based DDA systems aim to provide a bespoke level of challenge to each player, so that the game is neither too hard nor too easy. Previous research on performance-based DDA shows that it is linked to better player performance but finds mixed results in terms of player experience (e.g., enjoyment). Also, while the concept of flow is regarded as an important aspect of digital game experience, little research has considered the effects of performance-based DDA on flow. We conducted an experiment on the effects of performancebased DDA on player performance, enjoyment, and experience of flow in a digital game. 221 participants played either the DDA version of the game, a control version (difficulty remained constant), or an incremental version (difficulty increased regardless of performance). Results show that the DDA group performed significantly better. However, there were no significant differences in terms of enjoyment or experience of flow.

In this paper, we scrutinise the interpretation and distribution of a number of morphemes that serve as means of expressing temporal/aspectual relations in Vietnamese, investigating whether they should treated as genuine tense and aspect markers. The main goals of the study are two-fold: (i) empirically, to offer a comprehensive description of Vietnamese tense and aspect, in both pre-verbal and post-verbal domains; (ii) theoretically, to offer new pieces of evidence supporting the claim that Tense and Aspect exist as independent functional categories in Vietnamese.

In order to clarify the poorly understood mechanisms of two-electron reduction of quinones by flavoenzymes, we examined the quinone reductase reactions of a member of a structurally distinct old yellow enzyme family, Enterobacter cloacae PB2 pentaerythritol tetranitrate reductase (PETNR). PETNR catalyzes two-electron reduction of quinones according to a 'ping-pong' scheme. A multiparameter analysis shows that the reactivity of quinones increases with an increase in their single-electron reduction potential and pKa of their semiquinones (a three-step (e-,H+,e-) hydride transfer scheme), or with an increase in their hydride-transfer potential (E7(H-)) (a single-step (H-) hydride transfer scheme), and decreases with a decrease in their van der Waals volume. However, the pH-dependence of PETNR reactivity is more consistent with a single-step hydride transfer. A comparison of X-ray data of PETNR, mammalian NAD(P)H : quinone oxidoreductase (NQO1), and Enterobacter cloacae nitroreductase, which reduce quinones in a two-electron way, and their reactivity revealed that PETNR is much less reactive, and much less sensitive to the quinone substrate steric effects than NQO1. This may be attributed to the lack of π-π stacking between quinone and the displaced aromatic amino acid in the active center, e.g., with Phe-178' in NQO1.
