The aim of the article was to present the issue of financial exclusion and define sensitive areas of this phenomenon. The factors that may be relevant for measuring the degree of financial exclusion were analysed. An attempt was also made to determine the difficulties in access to financial services in the context of practices applied by both the supply and demand sides. In addition, barriers to the use of services were analysed as were financial products in terms of practices used by supply and demand. The typology of financial exclusion presented in the article is an attempt to define the type and scope of the phenomenon. Bank exclusion, credit exclusion and exclusion from the savings system are financial exclusion indicators. Each of those types of exclusion affects the economic and social level. Financial exclusion, which is one of the symptoms of the imbalance between demand and supply, is understood here as total or partial access to financial services offered by the market. The article also attempts to analyse the causes of exclusion with the division into supply and demand factors. The typology of financial exclusion proposed in the article may be a contributing factor to the reverse phenomenon, which is financial inclusion.

Social exclusion is a multidimensional phenomenon extending beyond poverty, unemployment, access to various goods and services, but also covering the scope of breakdown of social ties and a sense of isolation as well as dependence on others. This phenomenon affects various social groups, but seniors experience the effects of social exclusion in a special way. This article aims to show how the transport-related social exclusion of seniors influences their psychosocial functioning. The problem of transport-related exclusion in Poland currently affects 13.8 million people living in municipalities where there is no organized public transport. The article tries to answer the question about the extent to which the surveyed seniors experience transportation disadvantage and how the limited access to public transport affects their psychosocial functioning. The obtained results quite clearly indicate that the elderly experience many effects of transport-related exclusion, which has an impact on the quality of their life. The communication exclusion limits their access to health care, which results in decreasing their health. Seniors experience exclusion due to difficult access to public transport, goods and services that affect their life quality. Research shows that seniors feel dependent on others. Restricting contacts with family and friends causes them to feel lonely.

Urban exclusion has become one of the most studied subjects in the areas of both urban studies and exclusion studies. The problem is interpreted as a range of serious issues affecting the very social order of contemporary cities. Urban exclusion hinders the equal and sustainable development of society, hence leading policymakers to try and employ different programmes focused on tackling urban exclusion. Although their overall aims are similar, their specific means and measures differ significantly. However, it is important to ask whether the phenomenon of urban exclusion is sufficiently specific enough to allow for the development of particular effective approaches to challenge it.

The exclusion may take on different forms, on which decide a variety of factors, by which individuals or whole groups of a society are deprived of chances and possibilities, which are accessible to the majority of said society. In the case of homeless persons we will find it within the domain of the deprivation of housing facilities, within the domain of social life and society, but as well in the categories of economic and political exclusion.

Istnieją rozmaite rodzaje wykluczenia społecznego odnoszące się do życia poza nawiasem społeczeństwa. Procesu ukształtowanego przez miejsce w strukturze społecznej, przez przeszłe doświadczenia życiowe i oczekiwania. Koresponduje z nimi to najbardziej dramatyczne: wykluczenie z życia, czyli śmierć samobójcza. Jest ona dla socjologa (od czasów Emila Durkheima) najlepszym miernikiem integracji i kondycji społeczeństwa. Analiza trendów śmierci samobójczej w latach 1951–2013 wskazuje na ich systematyczny wzrost w tym czasie (o 400%) z wyjątkiem roku 1981 i przełomu 1989/1990, kiedy spadły one o 1/3. Było to niewątpliwie skutkiem nadziei związanych z Solidarnością i zmianą politycznego ustroju kraju. W latach 90. współczynniki śmierci samobójczych wykazują stabilizację z niewielkim wzrostem. Od roku 2009 nastąpił gwałtowny wzrost: z około 5000 do ponad 6000 rocznie. Uderzająca jest dysproporcja w zakresie płci. Polska jest jedynym na świecie krajem, w którym śmiercią samobójczą umiera aż sześciu mężczyzn na jedną kobietę. Skutkuje to określaniem Polski jako kraju silnych kobiet i coraz słabszych mężczyzn.
There are several types of social exclusion which describe the fact of living on the margin of the society. Social exclusion process is shaped by the position in the social structure, past life experiences and expectations, and relates also to exclusion from life - the most dramatic of all, and manifested by suicide. For a sociologist (since the time of Emile Durkheim) this is the best measure of social integration and the condition of the society itself. The analysis of suicide tendencies in 1951–2013 shows a systematic increase (by 400%), except for 1981 and the transition of 1989–1990, when there was a drop by 1/3. Undoubtedly, this drop was due to hopes brought by the Solidarity movement and the political transition in the country. In the 1990s, suicide ratios were generally stable, with some slight increases. Since 2009, there has been a sharp growth: from around 5,000 to 6,000 cases per year. Gender disparities are most striking here. Poland is the only country in the world where the female/male suicide ratio is one to six. This data gives rise to the assumption that Poland is the country of strong women and ever weaker men.

This paper discusses the results of two empirical research projects on consumer micro-loans in Poland recently conducted at the Institute of Applied Social Sciences (University of Warsaw) and the Institute of Justice. The text summarizes the main findings of both studies and focuses on their main common thread: the various dimensions of social exclusion among average consumers who enter the loan market. The text argues that individuals who take consumer loans usually experience financial exclusion, which in turn prevents them from obtaining the cheaper credit available from banks. At the same time, by entering the loan market individuals de facto exclude themselves from effective legal protection (from courts and administrative bodies), which should be provided as an element of the rule of law in a democratic state. Building on these premises, the concept of “cascade exclusion” is proposed as an analytical framework for theses on interrelated dimensions of exclusion.

Artykuł stanowi przegląd wiedzy na temat problematyki wykluczenia społecznego. Przedstawiono w nim dominujące modele teoretyczne opisujące to zjawisko. Omówiono znaczenie i wartość przynależności i wsparcia grupy społecznej. Następnie zaprezentowano możliwe skutki wykluczenia społecznego, wskazując na jego negatywne konsekwencje. Przedstawiono również wyniki badań, świadczące o istnieniu dwóch różnych sposobów postępowania jako skutków wykluczenia: agresji lub zachowań prospołecznych. Zaprezentowano także kierunki dalszych badań nad fenomenem ostracyzmu.
The article provides an overview of knowledge on social exclusion. It presents the dominant theoretical models describing this phenomenon. The meaning and importance of the sense of belonging and social support from a group is discussed. The possible consequences of social exclusion are then presented, and particularly the negative outcomes are highlighted. Both empirical findings and real life examples showing the occurrence of two different responses to social exclusion: aggression and prosocial behavior are described. Finally, the directions of further research on the ostracism phenomenon are presented.

Aim. The aim of this thesis is to present the impact of students exclusion (including SPEs) on their virtual behaviour in social media. Students with no special educational needs and those with SEN were taken into account. The relationship between exclusion of SPE and digitisation exclusion will be indicated . In addition, social exclusion in the family area was included. Methods: The analysis was based on statistical methods, such as: range, standard deviation, variance. Surveys were used. They were conducted on the Internet through the Facebook social portal on a national and global scale. Results: Respondents from around the world feel more excluded by the SPE than respondents in Poland. In contrast, respondents from the SPE use fewer social networking sites than in groups of computer players, both in Poland and worldwide. Conclusions: In Poland, SPE is not a barrier to communication with peers for most respondents, unlike global respondents. Respondents from the SPE spend less time on social portals because it absorbs their time devoted to learning, which can be an indicator of digital exclusion. Cognitive value: The originality of the research is to focus on introducing the global and Polish scale of the problem excluding students from SPE from the social media, which was calculated by the author’s method based on the indicator digital exclusion.

Problematyka wykluczenia finansowego stanowi istotny obszar badań we współczesnej nauce finansów głownie ze względu na poważne skutki jakie zjawisko to implikuje zarówno w makro (dla gospodarki, sektora finansowego), jak i mikro skali (dla konsumentów usług finansowych). Obserwując zmiany w demografii (wydłużanie się życia, starzenie społeczeństw) oraz spadek prognozowanych stóp zastąpienia w bazowych systemach emerytalnych szczególnego znaczenia nabiera kategoria wykluczenia emerytalnego, polegająca na ograniczonym dostępie jednostek do produktów emerytalnych. Celem artykułu jest określenie istoty i miary wykluczenia emerytalnego oraz próba kwantyfikacji tego zjawiska w Polsce w latach 2006-2017. O oryginalności opracowania stanowi autorska definicja instytucjonalnego wykluczenia emerytalnego w szerokim i wąskim ujęciu, a także podjęta próba pomiaru instytucjonalnego wykluczenia emerytalnego w wąskim ujęciu obejmująca analizę zmian liczby uczestników dobrowolnych programów emerytalnych, wskaźników penetracji poszczególnych programów emerytalnych, oraz odsetka osób aktywnych ekonomicznie, nie korzystających z produktów emerytalnych.
The issue of financial exclusion is an important area of research in modern finance science, mainly due to the serious effects that this phenomenon implies in both the macro (for the economy and the financial sector) and micro scale (for consumers of financial services). Observing changes in demography (increasing life expectancy, aging of societies) and a drop in forecasted replacement rates in basic pension systems, the category of pension exclusion, which involves limited access of individuals to pension products, is of particular importance. The purpose of this paper is to determine the nature and measure of pension exclusion and attempt to quantify this phenomenon in Poland in the years 2006-2017. The originality of the study is the author’s definition of institutional pension exclusion in both a broad and narrow perspective, as well as the attempt to measure institutional retirement exclusion in specific avenues, including: the analysis of changes in the number of voluntary pension scheme participants, penetration rates for individual pension programs and the percentage of economically active people not using pension products.

From time to time media reports frighten us about the events, which have similar, tragic scenarios – a student with a gun in their hand enters the school and his or her classmates, colleagues, teachers. The results of analyzes of fifteen school shootings in the United States, show that peer ostracism, intimidation, and love rejection, are the main determinants of these tragic events and experiencing social ostracism explained 87% of these cases (Leary et al., 2003). Ostracism hurts in the literal sense and mercilessly strikes the basic psychological needs. Consequently, the pain often leads to outbursts of irrational, socially unacceptable behavior (Williams, 2007). It is necessary, therefore, to focus on the consequences of being rejected by peers. This article raises the issue of youth coping strategies with ostracism.

Tekst omawia symboliczno-relacyjny wymiar wykluczenia przez ubóstwo. Składa się z dwóch części. Paragrafy 1–3 stanowią wprowadzenie teoretyczne: skupia się na wykluczeniu społecznym i łączącymi się z nim zjawiskami: regionalizacji, reprodukcji, konsumpcji i opuszczeniu. W paragrafie 4 opisano sposoby zapobiegania wykluczeniu społecznego spowodowanemu przez biedę. Przykład województwa warmińsko-mazurskiego pokazuje kilka działań podejmowanych, by przeciwdziałać temu problemowi – planowanie strategiczne, rozszerzenie dostępu do usług publicznych, polityka aktywacyjna czy ekonomia społeczna.
The text concerns the symbolic-relational aspect of poverty’s social exclusion. It consists of two parts. In the paragraphs 1–3 the theoretical concepts are introduced. They focus on social exclusion and its linked phenomena: space, reproduction, consumption and giving up. Paragraph 4 describes the empirical research on preventing social exclusion caused by poverty. The example of warminsko-mazurskie voivodeship provides a number of actions, which are undertake to counter this problem – strategic planning, widening the access to public service, activation policy or social economy.

Ethiopian Jews, a small and unique group in the Israeli social landscape, face multifaceted challenges in their quest for acceptance. The research delves into the complexities of identity formation within the Ethiopian Jewish community, considering the interplay of their history of immigration to Israel, unique religious practices, and the process of integration into Israeli society. It is accompanied by comparisons to other aliyot, in particular Mizrahi Jews and post-Soviet Jews. By analyzing the power dynamics that define Ethiopian Israelis’ status within Israel’s imagined community, this paper seeks to unveil the reasons behind their marginalization in the country, in particular focusing on the construction of Israeli national discourse. Ultimately, this paper aims to deepen the understanding of marginal identities in Israel, using the example of Ethiopian Jews to shed light on the broader challenges faced by marginalized communities in diverse societies. The paper offers valuable insights for policymakers, social advocates, and scholars striving to promote inclusivity and social cohesion within multicultural nations.

This study examines the use of online humour in a subversive local community Facebook group set up in 2017 by disgruntled members banned from a similar group “in opposition to [the original group’s] arbitrarily-applied rules, [its] enforced happiness, and [its] suppression of any post that isn't about giving away lemons or asking to borrow small appliances”. The dissatisfaction with the guidelines and the administration of the original Facebook group provides rich material for humorous posts in the new group, many with varying degrees of aggression directed at the founder and certain members of the “Dark Side”, as the original group is frequently referred to.  This article will demonstrate how the use of humour in this new rival Facebook group is used for the purposes of inclusion and exclusion, and how it contributes to a sense of belonging in this online community of practice (Lave & Wenger 1991) created by a small group of self-declared dissidents. It will be shown how the humour shapes the identity of the group through the members’ shared ideologies and beliefs (Tanskanen 2018), and how the humorous messages intended to denigrate and belittle the “Dark Side” reinforce unity among the group members, since the feeling of superiority over those being ridiculed coexists with a feeling of belonging (Billig 2005). Fifteen single comments or multi-post threads were chosen for analysis. These appeared during the first twenty months of this rival group’s existence, and included primarily affiliative and/or aggressive humour (Meyer 2015) directed at the original group. The analysis was carried out using elements of computer-mediated discourse analysis (Herring 2004), and an insider participant-observer online ethnographic approach. The examples chosen illustrate how the humour is used to unite the members of this subversive group by dividing them from the original one, to create the joking culture (Fine and de Soucey 2005) of the new group, and in so doing, creates and sustains the members’ shared identity as irreverent breakaway troublemakers.

Marginalizacja i wykluczenie postrzegane są jako jedne z najważniejszych kwestii społecznych obecnych czasów. Występują one w obrębie poszczególnych krajów, regionów, jak i całego świata. Stały się także ważnymi kategoriami politycznymi. Konieczne są więc działania zmierzające do likwidacji zarówno skutków marginalizacji i wykluczenia, jak i, a może przede wszystkim, przyczyn. Jednym z najbardziej skutecznych sposobów w tym względzie jest edukacja dla wszystkich przez całe życie, która umożliwia nie tylko pozostawanie poza kręgiem zmarginalizowanych i wykluczonych, ale wyjście z niego tych wszystkich, którzy z różnych powodów w nim się znaleźli.
Marginalization and exclusion are perceived to be some of the most significant social issues of modern times. They occur both within particular countries and globally; they have also become important political categories. Thus, there is the need to undertake actions aiming at eliminating both the results of marginalization and exclusion, and their causes. One of the most effective ways of doing that is providing lifelong education for everyone, which allows a person to remain outside the circle of the marginalized and excluded ones, as well as to exit the circle, if one has already become its part.
