One of the most common clichés of our culture defines Judaism as the “religion of the Father.” For some this is just a neutral description referring to the fatherly aspect of the JewishGod; for others this is the very epitome of the patriarchal prejudice which privileges the masculine Father Figure at the expense of everything maternal. In my essay, however, I would like to challenge this staple association, by pointing to the simple fact that Jews themselves very rarely – if ever – describe their religion in openly patriarchal terms. In fact, when described in psychoanalytic terms, the role of the Father is here merely transitory: he is to inaugurate a series of subsequent detachments, starting from the disintegration of the first bonds of love (to maternal body and, more generally, to the body of nature) and ending with the complete neutralisation of the “family romance.” The Father Figure, therefore, is called upon only to counteract the power of the primordial “attachments” and initiate a process of separation which will allow the subject to establish himself as a free and mature moral agent, truly “born” into the world.

The article seeks to analyze the portrayal of the Jews in two plays from the Chester mystery cycle: “Trial and Flagellation” and “The Passion.” The analysis acknowledges that the cycle is a mixture of, and a dialogue between, the universal standpoint emerging from the presentation of the biblical story of humankind and a contemporary perspective, pertaining to the reality of the viewers. Therefore, while pointing to the unique formal and structural uniformity of the cycle, which strengthens the idea of continuity between the Old and the New Covenant and the role of the Israelites in the history of salvation, it also recognizes the potential of the plays to engage in the current stereotypes. The article examines how the Gospel account of Christ’s trial and death is modified through presenting the Jews as torturers, whitewashing the non-Jewish characters, and placing special emphasis on the question of Jewish ignorance. It is demonstrated how different theological and popular stances concerning the Jewish people are merged and reconciled in the Chester representation of the passion of Christ and it is argued that the plays in question retell the biblical story in such a way that the justification for the expulsion of the Jews from England could be derived from it.

The paper discusses the problem of transferring the memory of Jews through Polish contemporary Catholic homilies. In the biblical pericopies read throughout the liturgical year during Catholic mass, generally Jews play a negative role – as persecutors and killers of Jesus. According to the provisions of the Second Vatican Council, anti-Jewish content cannot be proclaimed in the Catholic Church, and the Bible, which according to the doctrine must remain unchanged, should be adequately commented on in homilies. The paper – on the example of about 40 homilies – shows, however, that priests who preach homilies do not use modern exegetic knowledge, but replicate stereotypes deeply rooted in culture, thus reproducing the centuries-oldmyth of the Jews as killers of God.

One of the activities of the Inquisition most visible to ordinary people was called the auto-da-fé – a public confession of faith. Such ceremonies, held by the Inquisition Tribunal, were composed of several parts. One of the most significant parts of the ceremony was the sermon. Many of these sermons seemingly focused on Jewish issues, even if only a few of the condemned were accused of converting to Judaism. To whom, and for what purpose, were the sermons addressed? What were their character, role, and impact on society? Can we interpret them as a typical example of anti-Jewish literature, and a specific “invitation to intolerance”? This article aims to outline the subject matter of the sermons delivered during the auto-da-fé ceremony in Portugal, particularly their anti-Jewish aspect. Reference is made to texts of ten sermons made during autosda-fé held in the three biggest centers of 17th-century Inquisition activity in Portugal (Lisbon, Coimbra and Évora), as well as the colony of Goa.

This presentation concerns the problem of the social withdrawal of the Jews in other communities both now and in the past. The life in the diaspora brought about a certain amount of tension conditioned by economic, political, social, moral, national or religious factors. There emerged various attitudes of non-Jews towards the Jews customarily called anti-Semitism, anti-Judaism, anti-Jewishness as well as anti-Zionism. All the aforementioned phenomena have common grounds: such was the price of constructing, protecting, preserving and developing one’s identity in a strange community. There are, however, essential differences between these phenomena and this is usually forgotten. Consequently, any attempt at subsuming all of them under the term ‘anti-Semitism’ is unfounded and unjustifiable. The presentation aims first and foremost at characterising the above phenomena and particularly the differences and similarities between them as this affects their proper understanding and evaluation.

Hassliebe. Jewish self-hatred as seen by Sander L. Gilman (part one: from Hermann of Mainz to Johannes Pfefferkorn)The present paper constitutes the first part of the analysis of Sander L. Gilman’s famous book Jewish Self-Hatred, and the pioneering interpretation of the concept of stereotype. According to Gilman, a stereotype emerges as a result of an active collaboration of the person who stereotypises and the outsider. The latter opposes the image imposed by the stereotype, and thus splits the stereotype into a positive and a negative part. By identifying himself with the positive part, the outsider delegates the purity of classification not only to the subgroup he does not feel any attachment to, but also involuntarily legitimises the stereotype, because without his authorisation, the stereotype would merely remain a racist insult. The article is based on the narrations of Jewish converts to Christianity from the Middle Ages to the 15th century. Hassliebe. Żydowska samonienawiść w ujęciu Sandera L. Gilmana, Jewish Self-Hatred i przedstawionej w niej pionierskiej koncepcji stereotypu, powstającego w ramach aktywnego współdziałania stereotypizującego i outsidera. Ten ostatni, walcząc z narzuconym mu niesprawiedliwym wizerunkiem, dokonuje rozszczepienia stereotypu na pozytywny i negatywny, identyfikując się z tym pierwszym. W ten sposób nie tylko deleguje „nieczystość klasyfikacyjną” na podgrupę, z którą nie czuje związku, ale przede wszystkim niezauważalnie sam legitymizuje stereotyp, który bez jego autoryzacji miałby rangę rasistowskiego oszczerstwa. Materiał źródłowy artykułu stanowią narracje żydowskich konwertytów na chrześcijaństwo od średniowiecza po wiek XV.

The homily On the Peoples in Place of the People is the 16th in order of the collection of Aphrahat’s Demonstrations. The Persian sage clearly addresses the theme of „Israel” and „the nations”. Aphrahat demonstrates the divine „vocation of the nations” and „the rejection of Israel”. A polemical message in On the Peoples in Place of the People seems not to have considered that Israel itself was „the nation from the nations”. The people Israel was rejected and the peoples of gentiles took their place. Israelites were wearned over and over by the prophets, but in vain, so God abandoned tchem and replaces with „the peoples” of the new covenant. The vocation of the peoples was prior to that of the people of Israel. By means of the gentiles God provoked Israel.  
Mowa O narodach, które zastąpiły naród jest szesnastym wykładem w całym dziele Afrahata. Mędrzec perski podejmuje temat Izraela i ludów pogańskich. Bóg odrzucił „naród wybrany” a jego miejsce zajęły narody pogańskie. Polemiczne przesłanie De Gentibus quae Loco Populi Suffectae Sunt podważało mniemanie, że Izrael może się uważać „za naród z narodów”. Lud izraelski został odrzucony, gdyż zlekceważył nieustanne upomnienia proroków. Bóg upodobał sobie w ludach „nowego przymierza”, które miały drażnić i inspirować Izraelitów. W planach Bożych powołanie pogan było wcześniejsze niż „narodu wybranego”.

Artykuł analizuje temat relacji chrześcijańsko żydowskich w aspekcie historycznym i teologicznym. W części historycznej zostały krótko omówione następujące okresy: Nowego Testamentu, patrystyczny, średniowieczny, nowożytny i współczesny. W części teologicznej przedstawione zostały najpierw wspólne elementy judaizmu i chrześcijaństwa: Żydzi i chrześcijanie podkreślają w ich wierze i działaniu związek między miłością i sprawiedliwością; opierają oni swoja wiarę na wspólnych pismach (Stary Testament); rozumieją siebie na wzajem jako lud Boży; wyznają jednego Boga jako Stwórcę i Odkupiciela; wyrażają oni swoją wiarę we własnych służbach liturgicznych, które zawierają wiele podobieństw; żyją w oczekiwaniu nadejścia wspólnej historii z Bogiem to znaczy wypełnienia się historii w Bogu. Elementy odróżniające (różnice w sposobach działania) są następujące: wiara w Jezusa Chrystusa; interpretacja Pism; różne rozumienie czym jest lud Boży; odmiennie rozwinięta pobożność. W konkluzji zostało powiedziane, że rozwijanie pozytywnych relacji chrześcijańsko-żydowskich ma istotne znaczenie dla zachowania chrześcijańskiej tożsamości i pamięci.
The article analyses the subject of Christian-Jewish relations in historical and theological terms. In the historical part the following periods are briefly discussed: New Testament, patristic, medieval, modern and contemporary. In the theological part, the common elements of Judaism and Christianity were first presented: - Jews and Christians identify their faith and action through the interrelations between justice and love; they base their beliefs on the common “scripture” (the “Old Testament”); they understand each other as the people of God; they profess the one God, the Creator and the Redeemer; they express their faith in worship, in which there are many similarities; Jews and Christians also live in the expectation for the common history of God with his people, whose fulfillment they expect. Distinctive elements (The divergence of the ways) are: the belief in Jesus, the Christ; the interpretation of the Scriptures; a different understanding of what God’s people are; different developed piety. In conclusion, it was said that the rediscovery of a positive relationship with Judaism facilitates a positive formation of Christian identity and memory.

The article is focused on the topic of the relationships between Christians and Jews as seen by Christian ethics, especially those deriving from the Commandment: "Thou shalt not kill". The latter is understood as not only refraining from killing but also in the sense of duty to care for others and respect them. The presentation begins with a depiction of the strong antagonism between Jews and Christians, between Synagogue and Church, which has run for centuries. The ethical point of view is based on the strong ethical message of Albert Schweitzer about respecting every form of life. After that, the importance of the Great Commandment is stressed. Jesus Christ’s logia from the Gospel of Matthew, and Saint Paul’s teachings about God’s attitude towards man are explained. The author shows this objective anti-Semitism as antithetic to the above described Christian attitude. The article is completed with some views of future mutual relations which are based on hope for reconciliation - as described in a couple of declarations proclaimed by both Jews and Christians. The article includes the most significant thesis of the following declarations: Nostra aetate from 1965, Emet ve-Emunah from 1988 and Dabru emet from 2000.

It is common to accuse Christian supersessionism of responsibility for the Holocaust. This article qualifies this claim by arguing that the theological ideology that directly preceded and aided the Holocaust was unequivocally hostile to this traditional Christian doctrine. It is German neo-Marcionism – which deliberately fought against replacement theology – that provides a direct religious context for the Nazi solution to the Jewish question. Kant appears in this picture as the first modern German Christian who consistently pursued an anti-supersessionist agenda of “purifying” Christianity by radically severing it from its Jewish roots.
