Opis:
The aim of this article is to answer the question in what way Vanuatu population is prepared for volcanic eruption phenomenon and how the people living on the islands are informed about and prepared for danger of increased volcanic activity. Vanuatu is the island state located in New Hebrides archipelago formerly being British-French condominium which gained independence in 1980. At present the system of monitoring of volcanic seismic and meteorological phenomena is organized and supervised by Vanuatu Geohazards Observatory. Efficient and well prepared preventive actions are very important for communities living in this island state. In the volcanic regions, cooperation between scientists and population inhabiting threatened areas is essential. It is vital to prepare suitable forecasting, planning and managing procedures what is particularly important for the islands in case of occurrence of the crisis situation. Vanuatu has its own way of risk reduction and protection of the people from volcanic catastrophe. It is worth mentioning that at present idependently of region, volcanic institutes, international organizations, state governments and local authorities recognize need of permanent monitoring of volcanoes and arranging the appropriate systems of evacuation and also proper space planning aiming at improvement of safety of local population. Moreover, idependently of region, proper preparation of the people for expected increased activity of volcano situated on the particular island is vital. In distress situation actions taken should be efficient and properly coordinated because population must be often evacuated form part or the whole island. Confidence of inhbitants in managing institutions of the area and implementation of legal regulations by decision makers regarding agricultural activity and behaving in case of crisis is very important. Limited and relatively small areas of volcanic islands cause particular vulnerability from negative results of volcanic activity to the population and its property. Although it is not always possible the limiting of economic activity can be accepted as the easiest way of risk reduction for area directly vulnerable.
