Research of Wrocław’s Germanists over Austrian literature. A sample of the balance sheet and bibliography of scientific publications The aim of this article is to present the contribution of employees of the Institute of German Philology in research on the history of Austrian literature and its reception in Poland. The main goal is to show a wide range of research conducted at the Institute on literature and literary movement in Austria. The bibliography includes monographs, chapters in books, scientific articles on the history of German-speaking literature from Austria, dissertations and sketches on the Polish reception of Austrian literature, editions of Austrian authors, interviews with writers, articles, a list of Polish anthologies of Austrian literature and works on Polish-Austrian cultural relationships.

The article deals with the reception of Austrian literature – as it has been presented in “Literatura na Świecie” – since the magazine was founded in 1971. The main goal has been to analyze the ways in which the magazine has contributed to the spread of literature among Polish readers. Because of the breadth of the topic, the article focuses on specific problems in: the representativeness of the works printed or excerpted, the portrayal of Austrian writers, the reviews of texts, critical reviews, translations, and discussions regarding translations. The analysis indicates that the magazine has contributed to the expansion of knowledge concerning Austrian literature and its main representatives, (Rainer Maria Rilke, Robert Musil, Elias Canetti, Franz Kafka, Georg Trakl, Paul Celan, Ilse Aichinger, Elfriede. Jelinek and others , and others), their specificity, along with the historical and cultural conditions of the literature and its proponents.
In diesem Beitrag wird die Rezeption der österreichischen Literatur in der Zeitschrift „Literatura na Świecie” vom Beginn ihres Bestehens im Jahr 1971 vorgestellt. Die hauptsächliche Aufgabe bestand darin, dem polnischen Leser die österreichische Literatur näherzubringen. Im Hinblick auf den überaus großen Umfang des Themas wurde der Zugang anhand von Problemfeldern gewählt. Im Zentrum der Betrachtung finden sich Fragen wie z.B. die nach dem repräsentativen Charakter gedruckter Werke oder Fragmente, nach den Lebensläufen von österreichischen Schriftstellern, Werkbesprechungen, Rezensionen, Übersetzungen und damit verbundene Diskussionen. Im Lichte dieser Unternehmungen lässt sich feststellen, dass die Zeitschrift zur Verbreitung des Wissens über die österreichische Literatur und ihre Hauptvertreter (R.M. Rilke, R. Musil, E. Canetti, F. Kafka, G. Trakl, P. Celan, I. Aichinger, E. Jelinek und andere) sowie über ihre Eigenheiten und ihr historisches und kulturelles Umfeld maßgeblich beigetragen hat.
W artykule przedstawiona została recepcja literatury austriackiej na łamach czasopisma „Literatura na Świecie” od początku jego istnienia (1971). Głównym celem było ukazanie sposobów przybliżania tej literatury polskiemu czytelnikowi. Ze względu na dużą rozpiętość tematu zastosowano ujęcie problemowe, w centrum uwagi znalazły się takie kwestie, jak: reprezentatywność drukowanych utworów (lub ich fragmentów), sylwetki pisarzy austriackich, omówienia utworów, recenzje, działalność przekładowa i związane z nią dyskusje. W świetle tych poczynań można stwierdzić, że pismo przyczyniło się do poszerzenia wiedzy o literaturze austriackiej, jej głównych przedstawicielach (R.M. Rilke, R. Musil, E. Canetti, F. Kafka, G. Trakl, P. Celan, I. Aichinger, E. Jelinek i in.), specyfice, uwarunkowaniach historycznych i kulturowych.

The article examines the interest members of the Austrian Library show in Austrian literature. The article handles the statistics that indicate the Austrian books most often borrowed in the years 2001-2015 by various groups of library members. Analysis is based on figures taken from the members' choices. The factors that influence book choices are each member's scientific, educational, or aesthetic needs, as well as the library's efforts to support reading choices by its offers, such as, but not exclusively, meetings with writers, lectures, and exhibitions.
Der vorliegende Beitrag setzt sich zum Ziel, das Interesse der Benutzer der Österreich-Bibliothek in Opole an österreichischer Literatur zu untersuchen. Es wurde der Versuch unternommen, die von den einzelnen Lesergruppen am häufigsten entliehenen österreichischen Werke im Zeitraum 2001-2015 auszumachen. Anhand von statistischen Angaben der Bibliothek wurde die Buchauswahl analysiert. Zu den Aspekten, die auf die Auswahl der Bücher einen entscheidenden Einfluss haben, gehören von Seiten der Leser die Bedürfnisse nach Wissen, Bildung und Ästhetik. Überdies informiert der Beitrag über die von der Bibliothek angebotenen vielfältigen Formen der Leseförderung, wie Autorenlesungen, Vorträge und Ausstellungen zu Literaturthemen.
Niniejszy artykuł przedstawia zbiory oraz specyfikę działalności Biblioteki Austriackiej w Opolu na tle innych tego typu instytucji. Autorka stawia sobie za cel zbadanie czynników wpływających na wybór literatury austriackiej przez poszczególne grupy czytel-ników biblioteki. W artykule podjęta została próba prześledzenia zainteresowań czytelniczych na podstawie najczęściej wypożyczanych książek austriackich na przestrzeni lat 2001-2015. Analizy dokonano na podstawie danych statystycznych dotyczących zarejestrowanych czytelników, odwiedzin w bibliotece oraz liczby i struktury wypożyczonych zbiorów. Stwier-dzono, że do czynników wpływających na wybór literatury austriackiej przez czytelników należą głównie ich potrzeby estetyczne i edukacyjne. Przedstawiono ponadto działania biblioteki służące propagowaniu oferowanych zbiorów oraz dotyczące cyklicznie organizowanych austriackich wydarzeń kulturalnych i edukacyjnych. Za przykład podano formy wspierania czytelnictwa wśród różnych grup wiekowych i współpracę biblioteki z opolskimi germanistami.

Clones, artificial brains and wax statues, or about fantasize and theorize in literature and science with Gustav Meyrink in the background Meyrink This article asks about the similarity between process of writing in fantasy (here: science fiction) literature and inventing physical theories. The main meaning in both of them has the imagination of the author or scientist. Many examples show, that an author supported by physical knowledge or inspired by new technical ideas, writes text, that becomes a part of fantasy literature. The main question in this article is, if this text can loose his fiction element in the future? The possibility to answer this question give us time perspective, that we have in reading G. Meyrinks books after 100 years. We can see, if the visions of this Austrian wrtiter still fantasy are, or perhaps became reality.

Der Beitrag ist ein Versuch der komplexen Interpretation des Romans „Der Kameramörder“ von Thomas Glavinic. Der in ihm dargestellte Mord von zwei Kindern und die damit verbundene Ermittlung beeindrucken mit Gewalt und Grausamkeit, wobei die beliebtesten, vom Autor ausgenutzten Mittel Irritation und absurde Anspannung sind. Der Text ist in zwei Teile gegliedert. Im ersten wird die traditionelle, nahe liegende Interpretation aufgenommen, in der Nachdruck auf die Sprache gelegt wird. Im zweiten Teil erscheint eine alternative Auslegung: trotz allem, was die Handlung scheinbar suggeriert, der Erzähler war kein Täter, sondern einer von vielen Schuldträgern. Demzufolge werden soziale und mediale Aspekte der Interpretation betont.
The paper is an attempt for a complex interpretation of Thomas Glavinic’s novel “Der Kameramörder”. The murder of two children depicted in there impresses with signs of violence and cruelty, while author’s beloved persuasive figures are irritation and absurd intensifying of suspense. The paper is composed of two parts. In the first of them the priority is given to a traditional interpretation who suggests itself at once, a pure literary one, where emphasis is put on language. In the second part an alternative interpretation is underlined: despite the apparent suggestions of the plot the narrator wasn’t the perpetrator but one of many possible offenders. Thus the weight of interpretation is moved towards medial and social aspects.
Artykuł stanowi próbę kompleksowej interpretacji powieści Thomasa Glavinica „Der Kameramörder” [Morderca z kamerą]. Przedstawione w niej morderstwo dwojga dzieci i związany z nim proces śledczy epatują znakami przemocy i okrucieństwa, przy czym ulubionymi środkami perswazyjnymi wykorzystywanym przez autora są irytacja i absurdalne wzmaganie napięcia. Tekst podzielony jest na dwie części. W pierwszej z nich podjęta zostaje interpretacja tradycyjna, nasuwająca się w pierwszej kolejności, interpretacja czysto literaturoznawcza, w której główny nacisk położony jest na język. W części drugiej do głosu dochodzi wykładnia alternatywna: wbrew temu, co pozornie nasuwa akcja utworu, narrator nie był sprawcą, lecz jednym z wielu możliwych winowajców. Tym samym ciężar interpretacji zostaje przesunięty na aspekty medialne i społeczne.

This article analyses The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge (1910) by Rainer Maria Rilke and A Moment of True Feeling (1975) by Peter Handke, aiming to demonstrate that the protagonists of the two works are trying to overcome existential problems through the subjectivist perception of reality. The article demonstrates how Rilke and Handke referred to subjectivity in their works listed above. The comparison of The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge and A Moment of True Feeling reveals Handke’s attitude to the concept proposed by Rilke.

Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird – am Bespiel der Novelle Wir töten Stella Marlen Haushofers – auf die in der österreichischen Öffentlichkeit bis in die späten 1970er Jahre präsenten Strategien hingewiesen, die NS-Schuld zu verdrängen und zu marginalisieren. Für den Ausgangspunkt der Überlegungen dient die Aussage des Soziologen R. M. Lepsius, der im Kontext der NS-Verantwortung von der Externalisierung des Nationalsozialismus in Österreich spricht. Er meint damit den Versuch Österreichs, die Verantwortung für das NS-Verbrechen auf das Hitlerdeutschland zu verschieben und sich somit für das erste NS-Opfer stilisieren zu wollen. Die zwanzig Jahre nach dem Anschluss publizierte Novelle Haushofers initiiert in Österreich die kritische Debatte über die NS-Vergangenheit, die von etlichen österreichischen Schriftstellerinnen fortgesetzt und ausgetragen wird. Vor dem Hintergrund einer privaten Tragödie stellt die Autorin Parallelen zwischen der patriarchalisch regierten Familiensphäre und der Politikwelt her. Haushofer antizipiert somit – auf metaphorischem Wege – die NS-Debatte in Österreich, indem sie nach den Wurzeln der NS-Ideologie in den familiären Strukturen sucht.
Autorka artykułu, analizując ukazane w noweli strategie wypierania nazistowskiej winy w społeczeństwie Austrii, za punkt wyjścia obiera przemyślenia Herfrieda Münklera, który w tomie Die Deutschen und ihre Mythen (2011) pisze o różnym sposobie instrumentalizacji przeszłości. Münkler w kontekście powojennej rzeczywistości austriackiej mówi – powołując się na socjologa Rainera M. Lepsiusa – o tzw. eksternalizacji narodowego socjalizmu w Austrii, rozumianej jako przeniesienie odpowiedzialności na Niemców oraz postrzeganie siebie jako pierwszej ofiary nazizmu. Przekonanie, że Austriacy są pierwszą ofiarą Hitlera (Anschluss 1938) jest obecne w zbiorowej świadomości Austriaków po lata siedemdziesiąte XX wieku. Opublikowana w 1958 r. (dwadzieścia lat po przyłączeniu Austrii do Rzeszy) nowela Wir töten Stella zapoczątkowuje linię krytycznego spojrzenia na nazistowską przeszłość i winę Austrii, dokonywanego przede wszystkim przez autorów kobiecych (np. Bachmann, Frischmuth, Mitgutsch, Streeruwitz, Jelinek). Ukazanie społecznej pozycji kobiety, jej wyobcowania w patriarchalnym agresywnym świecie rządzonym przez mężczyzn stanowi punkt wyjścia tych rozważań. Haushofer zauważa powiązanie zachodzące między procesami rodzinno-społecznymi a politycznymi. Antycypując dyskusję o faszyzmie w Austrii, w sposób metaforyczny przedstawia jej zakorzenienie w formach społecznych – w rodzinie.

The article has interpretative character, and attempts to take a deeper look into the story of Thomas Bernhard An der Baumgrenze (the title of the polish translation is Na granicy lasów) from a wood-forest perspective and a border experience which goes beyond its topographical meaning. Forests or individual trees in the austrian writer’s creation are connected with characters minds. In this space they often reach the limit of madness, lose control of themselves, what ultimately leads to death. The text also focuses on the paintings of Anton Lehmden – a representative of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism – which are included in the tome containing An der Baumgrenze and creatively complements Bernhard’s narrations.
Artykuł ma charakter interpretacyjny i stanowi próbę przyjrzenia się opowiadaniu Thomasa Bernharda pt. An der Baumgrenze (tytuł polskiego tłumaczenia brzmi Na granicy lasów) z perspektywy drzewno-leśnej oraz doświadczenia granicy, która wykracza poza swoje topograficzne znaczenie. Lasy lub pojedyncze drzewa związane są w twórczości austriackiego pisarza z umysłami bohaterów. W przestrzeni tej często dochodzą oni do granicy obłędu, tracą kontrolę nad sobą, co ostatecznie prowadzi do śmierci. Tekst koncentruje się także na rycinach Antona Lehmdena – przedstawiciela Wiedeńskiej Szkoły Realizmu Fantastycznego – które znajdują się w tomie zawierającym An der Baumgrenze i twórczo dopełniają narracje Bernharda.

Dieser Artikel versucht nachzuzeichnen, wie sich innerhalb der polnischen Germanistik ein auf die Literatur Österreichs spezialisierter eigener Forschungszweig herauskristallisiert hat. Dabei soll es neben der Semantik des dadurch entstandenen Bildes Österreichs und moderner österreichischer Literatur v. a. um die historische Entwicklung dieses Forschungszweiges selbst gehen.
Artykuł podejmuje próbę rekonstrukcji odrębnego kierunku badań w germanistyce polskiej, koncentrującego się na literaturze austriackiej. Oprócz znaczenia stworzonego w ten sposób obrazu Austrii i współczesnej literatury austriackiej chodzi przede wszystkim o historyczny rozwój tego kierunku badawczego.
The article makes an attempt at reconstruction of a distinct research course in the German studies in Poland, focusing on Austrian literature. Apart from the significance of the image of Austria and the contemporary Austrian literature created in this way, the article discusses primarily the historical development of this research direction.

Opis:
This article focuses on Monika Muskała’s Między „Placem Bohaterów” a „Rechnitz”. Austriackie rozliczenia [Between the Heroes Square and Rechnitz. Settling the Austrian Cases] with regard to Elfriede Jelinek’s “Rechnitz (The Angel of Death)” included in it. Moreover, it shows how Jelinek’s play has been adapted in Polish theatres and discusses other publications dedicated to the Rechnitz massacre of March 1945 (including Martin Pollack’s and Sacha Batthyany’s books). Various materials regarding Jewish people being forced to work in Burgenland and its territories are recalled in the article, which also calls for perceiving the Rechnitz as one of many crimes that took place in the last stage of World War II: not a unique case (this issue is tackled in Walter Manoschek’s research), but the Endphaseverbrechen instead.  
Artykuł jest omówieniem książki Moniki Muskały Między „Placem Bohaterów” a „Rechnitz”. Austriackie rozliczenia, z uwzględnieniem zamieszczonego w niej utworu Elfriede Jelinek Rechnitz (Anioł Zagłady). W tekście wyszczególnione zostają wystawione w Polsce spektakle teatralne na podstawie dramatu Jelinek, a także inne książki odwołujące się do masakry, do której doszło w Rechnitz w marcu 1945 roku (A co ja mam z tym wspólnego? Sachy Batthyany’ego i Topografia pamięci Martina Pollacka). Autorka przywołuje materiały dotyczące żydowskich pracowników przymusowych z terenów Burgenlandu i sygnalizuje przy tym potrzebę patrzenia na Rechnitz jako na jedną z wielu zbrodni okresu końcowego, Endphaseverbrechen, a nie przypadek odosobniony (na podstawie badań Waltera Manoscheka).

Austriackie rozliczenia, z uwzględnieniem zamieszczonego w niej utworu Elfriede Jelinek Rechnitz (Anioł Zagłady). W tekście wyszczególnione zostają wystawione w Polsce spektakle teatralne na podstawie dramatu Jelinek, a także inne książki odwołujące się do masakry, do której doszło w Rechnitz w marcu 1945 roku (A co ja mam z tym wspólnego? Sachy Batthyany’ego i Topografia pamięci Martina Pollacka). Die Kulturantrhopologie inspirierte die Literaturwissenschaftler zu einem Verständnis der literarischen Texte als Texte der Kultur, die den Menschen in einem Netzwerk sozialer Beziehungen und täglicher Handlungen vor dem Hintergrund der zivilisatorischen Leistungen der jeweiligen Epoche zeigen. In dem Aufsatz wird die kulturanthropologische Perspektive bei der Analyse und Interpretation des Romans „Wir Erben“ (2014) der österreichischen Autorin Angelika Reitzer eingesetzt. Die auf dem Leben beider Protagonistinnen, Marianne und Siri, basierende Untersuchung macht die Konstruktion des Alltags im Roman sichtbar (unter Einbeziehung des sozialen und des materiellen Raumes) und bestätigt seinen Referenzcharakter der Realität gegenüber. Entsprechend der anthropologischen Literaturwissenschaft (Doris Bachmann-Medick, Ewa Kosowska) fungiert der literarische Text als eine Erkenntnisquelle und liefert Informationen sowohl über die Welt der literarischen Figuren als auch der Zeitgenossen. So gelesen, hilft der Roman „Wir Erben“ dem modernen Leser, seine Gegenwart besser zu verstehen.
Anthropology of culture inspired the literature researchers to analyse and interpret the literary culture texts that present a man in the network of social connection and everyday activities on the background of the achievements of civilisation of a given period of time. The prospect of anthropology of culture gave way to an analysis and interpretation of the novel Wir Erben (2014) by an Austrian novelist, Angelica Reitzer. The analysis referring to the life of the protagonists, Marianne and Siri, presents the construction of the everyday procedures in the novel ( including the factors such as social and material space), indicating its referential character towards the reality. According to the provisions of the anthropology of culture (Ewa Kosowska) and anthropological and literary studies (Doris Bachmann-Medick), a literary text constitutes the source of the knowledge about the world of not only the literary characters, but also the one of the readers. The novel Wir Erben, read according to that key, allows contemporary readers to understand their own reality.
Antropologia kultury zainspirowała literaturoznawców do analizy i interpretacji tekstów literackich jako tekstów kultury, ukazujących człowieka w sieci społecznych powiązań i codziennych działań na tle osiągnięć cywilizacyjnych opisywanego okresu. Perspektywa antropologii kulturowej posłużyła w artykule do analizy i interpretacji powieści „Wir Erben” (2014) austriackiej pisarki Angeliki Reitzer. Analiza odwołująca się do życia bohaterek Marianne i Siri unaocznia konstrukcję codzienności w utworze (z uwzględnieniem czynników takich jak przestrzeń społeczna i materialna), wskazując na jej referencyjny charakter wobec rzeczywistości. Zgodnie z założeniami antropologii literatury (Ewa Kosowska) i literaturoznawstwa antropologicznego (Doris Bachmann-Medick) tekst literacki jest źródłem wiedzy o świecie nie tylko bohaterów literackich, ale i czytelników. Powieść „Wir Erben” czytana według tego klucza pozwala współczesnemu odbiorcy na zrozumienie własnej rzeczywistości.

Der Beitrag widmet sich der Arbeit von Joanna Ławnikowska-Koper Literarisierung der Familie im österreichischen Roman der Gegenwart, die in mannigfaltigen Kontexten und unter Berücksichtigung einer kulturwissenschaftlichen Perspektive das literarisierte Bild der Familie als Topos der österreichischen Literatur der Gegenwart betrachtet. Die konzeptuell-narrativen Strategien bei der Literarisierung der Familie umfassen in dem besprochenen Buch vier semantische Bereiche: die Identitätsfrage, die Modernisierungsfrage, die Wertewandelfrage und die Alltäglichkeit. Dank dessen schlägt das Buch eine interdisziplinäre Betrachtung der literarischen Familie vor und versteht sich gleichzeitig – dank der Berücksichtigung des spezifischen österreichischen Kulturcodes – als ein aktuelles Pendant zur Literaturgeschichte Österreichs.
Artykuł dotyczy monografii Joanny Ławnikowskiej-Koper Literarisierung der Familie im österreichischen Roman der Gegenwart, w ktorej autorka w różnych kontekstach przedstawia z perspektywy kulturoznawczej literacki obraz rodziny jako topos współczesnej literatury austriackiej. Strategie koncepcyjne i narracyjne zastosowane w literaryzacji rodziny obejmują w omawianej książce cztery obszary semantyczne: kwestię tożsamości, kwestię modernizacji, kwestię zmieniających się wartości oraz codzienności. Książka stanowi dzięki temu interdyscyplinarne spojrzenie na rodzinę literacką, a uwzględniając specyficzny austriacki kodeks kulturowy jest ważnym aktualnym przyczynkiem do historii literatury Austrii.
The article concerns the monograph by Joanna Ławnikowska-Koper Literarisierung der Familie im österreichischen Roman der Gegenwart, which presents (from a cultural-research perspective) the literary image of families as the topos of contemporary Austrian literature. The conceptual and narrative strategies that dominate the family’s literarisation in the examined texts cover four semantic areas: the issue of identity, the issue of modernisation, axiological issues – the system of values and everyday life. The texts allow for an interdisciplinary reflection on the literary family, while the historical and literary background is important to consideration of the specific Austrian cultural code in the context of the distinctiveness of Austrian literature.

Opis:
Der im Exil von Robert Neumann geschriebene Struensee-Roman aus dem Jahr 1935 wird von der Forschung wegen seiner zahlreichen inhaltlichen und historischen Fehler nicht besonders hoch angesehen. Das Ziel dieser analytischen Untersuchung ist weniger, gegen diesen legitimen Vorwurf zu kämpfen, als vielmehr die Funktion der auf den ersten Blick nicht konsequenten und variablen Erzählweise des Romans zu zeigen, um ihn weiterhin in bestimmte Themen der Zeit zu situieren. Ausgehend von der These, dass man es in Struensee mit einem ‚unzuverlässigen Erzähler‘ zu tun hat, führt die Autorin eine tiefgehende Analyse der Narration durch und zeigt, dass der Eindruck der Unzuverlässigkeit gezielt vom impliziten Autor erzeugt wird. Dadurch gehört der Roman in ästhetische, literarische oder philosophische Diskurse der Zwischenkriegszeit.
Robert Neumann’s Struensee novel, written in exile in 1935, does not enjoy special recognition among researchers due to numerous content and historical errors. The aim of this analytical article is not to defend the novel against justified charges of literary scholars but to examine the function of the narrative which, at first glance, is the result of Neumann’s careless and hasty writing. Beginning with the thesis proposing that the novel features as unreliable narrator, the author of the paper carried out an in-depth analysis of the narrative trying to answer the question to what extent this type of narrative is part of the aesthetic, literary and philosophical discourses of the interwar period.
Powieść Roberta Neumanna pt. Struensee, napisana na emigracji w roku 1935, nie cieszy się ze względu na liczne błędy treściowe i historyczne szczególnym uznaniem wśród badaczy. Celem tego analitycznego artykułu nie jest bronienie powieści przed słusznymi zarzutami literaturoznawców, ile zbadanie funkcji narracji w powieści, która na pierwszy rzut oka jest wynikiem niestarannego i pospiesznego pisarstwa Neumanna. Wychodząc od tezy zakładającej, że w powieści mamy do czynienia z narratorem ‘nie godnym zaufania’ (unreliable narrator), autorka artykułu przeprowadza dogłębną analizę narracji i stwierdza, że jest ona zamierzoną strategią autora implikowanego. W ten sposób powieść wpisuje się w estetyczne, literackie i filozoficzne dyskursy okresu międzywojennego.
