We briefly report on recent discovery of a new Fossil-Lagerstätte at Owadów-Brzezinki quarry (central Poland), where Upper Jurassic (Upper Tithonian = Middle Volgian) shallow water carbonates are exposed. Th section includes a richly fossiliferous horizon of lithographic-type limestones, formed in a lagoonal depositional environment. Numerous organic and phosphatic remains of wide range of both marine and terrestrial creatures, including horseshoe crabs and decapods, disarticulated fish skeletons, remains of marine reptiles, ammonites, dragonflies, beetles, and rare isolated pterosaur bones and teeth, were found in association with an extremely abundant small bivalves Corbulomima obscura. The richly fossiliferous horizon at Owadów-Brzezinki is stratigraphically closely related to one of the world's most famous Fossil-Lagerstätte sites – Solnhofen (Bavaria, south-central Germany).

Early-diagenetic calcitic concretions of latest Bajocian (parkinsoni Zone, bomfordi Subzone) age in the Polish Jura contain an extremely rich and well-preserved macrofauna. In addition to bivalves and brachiopods, there are numerous ammonites of the (sub)genera Parkinsonia, Nannolytoceras, Lissoceras (Lissoceras), L. (Microlissoceras), as well as rare representatives of Vermisphinctes, Strigoceras (Strigoceras) and Phylloceras. Carapaces of primitive prosopid crabs are found associated. Such a diverse and well-preserved fauna (previously unknown from Bajocian epicratonic deposits of the Polish Jura), is typical of Konzentrat-Lagerstätte-type deposits. The random distribution of the concretions in exposure and the small size of the fauna may suggest that all remains were concentrated by bottom-current action in small depressions on an uneven sea-floor. The presence of numerous small-sized ammonites may be regarded as reflecting post-spawning assemblages which sufferedmass-mortality. Although cause of their death remains unclear, storm events are a possibility. Such depressions acted as natural “traps” as well as constituted a size-limiting factor for the accumulating fauna. The fact that all elements are well preserved indicates brief post-mortem transport and rapid burial, followed by early diagenesis that protected them from compaction. The absence of such fossil-rich concretions higher in the Middle Jurassic sequence clearly shows that our current assessment of biotic diversity may be an underestimate. The carbonate concretions contain a predominantly terrestrial type of organic matter (OM). Samples analysed are extremely immature, but early diagenetic transformations of OM occurred prior to concretion formation.

Decapod crustaceans are the most diverse group of fossil invertebrates from the Upper Cretaceous Sahel Alma Lagerstätte (Lebanon, Middle East). They are mainly represented by abundant crest−bearing shrimps which were first described as Penaeus libanensis. We review this species applying the new systematic nomenclature and we propose a more complete description based on 54 unpublished specimens. This review leads to the erection of Palaeobenthesicymus gen. nov. and to the new combination Palaeobenthesicymus libanensis that is the oldest record of the family Benthesicymidae. A neotype is herein designated. Detailed comparisons with extant analogues suggest that the crest bearing shrimps inhabited relatively deep water settings most probably exceeding 150 m, at the transition between the lower circalittoral and the upper bathyal zones, under dysphotic or aphotic conditions.

Onychodictyon ferox, from the Lower Cambrian Chengjiang Lagerstätte, is a worm−like armored lobopod with 10 pairs of dorsal plates and a pair of probable sensory appendages (“antennae”). Newly discovered complete specimens show that Onychodictyon is represented by two species: O. ferox with a “head” bearing a pair of dorsal “antennae” and a trunk with 11 pairs of limbs, whereas O. gracilis has a blunt anterior end without any appendages and a trunk with 12 pairs of limbs. Because of the close resemblance of the “antennae” of O. ferox and those of the lobopod Miraluolishania, they are considered to be homologous structures. The “antennae” of Cambrian lobopodians are proposed to be homologous with the arthropod antennulae.

The La Voulte Lagerstätte is remarkable for its unique soft−bodied fauna (e.g., worms, coleoid squids) and its exceptionally preserved arthropods mainly found in small sideritic concretions. This arthropod fauna includes 30 different species assigned to the crustaceans, the thylacocephalans and the pycnogonids. Crustaceans are the most diversified group with 23 species distributed in a dozen families. Quantitative analyses based on 388 nodules reveals four dominant groups: (i) the enigmatic thylacocephalan arthropods (33%), (ii) the Solenoceridae shrimps (22%), (iii) the Coleiidae crustaceans (15%), and (iv) the Penaeidae shrimps (10%). Converging lines of evidence from depositional environment and modern analogues, indicate that this arthropod fauna probably inhabited a deep water setting most probably exceeding 200 m (= bathyal zone) under dysphotic or aphotic conditions. This new set of data sheds new light on the deep−sea colonisation by animal communities in the Mesozoic.

Oligochaetes, despite their important role in terrestrial ecosystems and a tremendous biomass, are extremely rare fossils. The palaeontological record of these worms is restricted to some cocoons, presumable trace fossils and a few body fossils the most convincing of which are discovered in Mesozoic and Cenozoic strata. The Olenekian (Lower Triassic) siliciclastic lacustrine Petropavlovka Lagerstätte of the southern Cis-Urals yields a number of extraordinary freshwater fossils including an annelid. The segmented body with a secondary annulation of this fossil, a subtriangular prostomium, a relatively thick layered body wall and, possibly, the presence of a genital region point to its oligochaete affinities. Other fossil worms which have been ascribed to clitellates are reviewed and, with a tentative exception of two Pennsylvanian finds, affinities of any pre-Mesozoic forms to clitellate annelids are rejected. The new fossil worm allows tracing of a persuasive oligochaete record to the lowermost Mesozoic and confirms a plausibility of the origin of this annelid group in freshwater conditions.

Apart from the Phyllopod Bed of the Burgess Shale (Middle Cambrian) polychaete annelids are practically unknown from any of the Cambrian Lagerstätten. This is surprising both because their diversity in the Burgess Shale is considerable, while to date the Chengjiang Lagerstätte which is equally impressive in terms of faunal diversity has no reliable records of any annelids. Here we describe, on the basis of about 40 specimens, Phragmochaeta canicularis gen. et sp. nov. from the Lower Cambrian Sirius Passet Lagerstätte of Peary Land, North Greenland. This makes it by far the oldest known polychaete, with a likely age of lower to middle Atdabanian, The body consists of approximately 20 segments, each bearing notochaetae and neurochaetae. The former appeared to have formed a felt−like covering on the dorsum, whilst the neurochaetae projected obliquely to the longitudinal axis. Apart from minor differences in chaetal size at either end there is no other tagmosis. Details of the head are obscure, and presence of palps, tentacles and eyes are conjectural. Jaws appear to have been absent. The gut was straight, and flanked by massive longitudinal musculature. P. canicularis was evidently benthic, propelling itself on the neurochaetae, with the dorsal neurochaetae conferring protection. Its stratigraphic position and generalized appearance are consistent with P. canicularis being primitive, but the phylogenetic relationships within the polychaetes remain problematic, principally because of paucity of relevant morphological information.

Opis:
Turonian sandy limestones and organodetrital limestones exposed in the Wielkanoc quarry, Miechów Upland, South Poland, lie on Oxfordian massive limestones, truncated with an abrasion surface. The bed situated ca. 2.5 m above the abrasion surface contains a parautochthonous and monotypic assemblage of the species Conulus subrotundus Mantell, 1822; thus the concentration can be referred to as the Conulus Lagerstätte. The microfacies analysis of the Conulus Lagerstätte indicates its development to have been determined by the existence of eco-events producing an increased population of Conulus subrotundus, and of sedimentological factors, that is waning of the loose sediment from the sea floor and erosion of the consolidated deposit rich in the earlier fossilised echinoids. The episodes of material accumulation, its consolidation and erosion in high-energy environment (action of bottom current) led to the increase of amount of echinoids as the intraclasts according to the model of lag sediment deposition.
W kamieniołomie Wielkanoc (Wyżyna Miechowska), położonym na granicy Jury Polskiej i Niecki Miechowskiej (Fig. 1) odsłania się 10 m profil utworów oerodkowego i górnego turonu (Fig. 2), leżących na powierzchni abrazyjnej, oecinającej oksfordzkie wapienie skaliste. Utwory turońskie są wykształcone w dolnej części profilu w postaci wapieni piaszczysto-organodetrytycznych, organodetrytycznych lub piaszczystych, podczas gdy w górnej przeważają wapienie organodetrytyczne. Profil turonu kończy warstwa wapieni pelitowych z twardym dnem w stropie, nad którym leżą wapienie piaszczysto-glaukonitowe koniaku. Około 2,5 m nad powierzchnią abrazyjną znajduje się warstwa z wyraźnie większą frekwencją jeżowców (Fig. 3, 4), które stanowią paraautochtoniczny i monotypowy zespół gatunku Conulus subrotundus Mantell, 1822. Nagromadzenie jeżowców Conulus w jednej warstwie o znacznym rozprzestrzenieniu horyzontalnym pojawia się tylko raz w profilu turonu kamieniołomu Wielkanoc. Wykonane badania pokazały niejednorodną budowę warstwy z jeżowcami (Fig. 5–8). W obrębie tła skalnego występują intraklasty bez jeżowców, intraklasty, w których jeżowiec stanowi część intraklastu oraz jeżowce. Tło skalne jest packstonem inoceramowym (Fig. 5h, 7F), podobnie jak utwory leżące powyżej warstwy z jeżowcami (Fig. 5i, 8). Intraklasty nie zawierające jeżowców są zbudowane z wakstonu otwornicowo-kalcisferowego z dużą domieszką kwarcu oraz podrzędnie glaukonitu (Fig. 5c, 7B). Litologicznie odpowiadają osadom podoecielającym warstwę z jeżowcami (Fig. 5b, 7A). Intraklasty z jeżowcami charakteryzują się nieco bardziej złożoną budową. Skała otaczająca pancerz wykształcona jest jako wakston otwornicowo-kalcisferowy z dużą domieszką kwarcu oraz podrzędną glaukonitu (Fig. 5d, f; 7D, E). Ten sam rodzaj osadu wypełnia większość pancerzy jeżowców (Fig. 5e, 7E). Znacznie rzadziej spotykane są okazy, gdzie skała wypełniająca pancerz jeżowca w całości jest wakstonem otwornicowo- kalcisferowym bez domieszek kwarcowo-glaukonitowych (Fig. 5g, 7C), lub też wypełnienie pancerza ma charakter mieszany, tzn. część okazu wypełniona jest wakstonem otwornicowokalcisferowym z dodatkiem dużej ilości kwarcu i niewielkiej glaukonitu, zaś pozostała część, tej domieszki jest pozbawiona. Jeżowce nie będące częścią intraklastu wypełnione są wakstonem otwornicowo-kalcisferowym z dużą domieszką kwarcu i niewielk ą glaukonitu. Nieliczne okazy są wypełnione wakstonem otwornicowo-kalcisferowym, który nie zawiera domieszek kwarcowo- glaukonitowych. Obserwacje terenowe i analiza mikrofacjalna pozwoliły stwierdzić, iż do nagromadzenia jeżowców w analizowanej warstwie przyczyniły się czynniki ekologiczne i złożone czynniki sedymentologiczne. Do tych pierwszych należą zdarzenia ekologiczne, kiedy w środowisku stosunkowo niskoenergetycznym powstały optymalne warunki rozwoju Conulus subrotundus Mantell. Na czynniki sedymentologiczne złożyło się zarówno wymywanie świeżo złożonego luźnego osadu jak i erozja już skonsolidowanego osadu, bogatego w sfosylizowane wcześniej jeżowce (Fig. 9). Proces ten polegał na epizodach akumulacji materiału, jego konsolidacji i erozji w środowisku wysokoenergetycznym, co doprowadziło do powstania bruku rezydualnego (ang. lag deposit) składającego się ze sfosylizowanych wczeoeniej jeżowców. Opisane procesy zachodziły na podmorskim progu krakowskim, który funkcjonował jako jednostka paleogeograficzna od turonu po santon. Próg krakowski rozdzielał dwa głębsze baseny, położony na NE basen bruzdy duńsko-polskiej od basenu opolskiego na SW. W generalnie transgresywnych utworach późnej kredy, na progu krakowskim osadzały się utwory płytkowodne. Osadzanie tych utworów było przerywane częstymi epizodami erozji, gdyż próg krakowski, zanim został ostatecznie pogrążony w późnym santonie, podlegał okresowo silnej działalności falowania i prądów dennych.

A large lobopod, Jianshanopodia decora gen. et sp. nov., with body length (excluding appendages) about 220 mm from the Lower Cambrian Haikou section, near Kunming, Yunnan, southwest China, shows a mixture of characters, including features of the lobopod Xenusion Pompeckj, 1927, e.g., a large cylindrical body with annulations, stout and strong lobopod appendages each bearing bases of serial tubercles, and of Aysheaia Walcott, 1911, i.e., a pair of large frontal appendages. This suggests that the new genus might be a connecting link between Xenusion and Aysheaia. Besides, Jianshanopodia shares some features with the Early Cambrian stem group arthropod Pambdelurion Budd, 1997, and Kerygmachela Budd, 1993, e.g., the pairs of mid−gut diverticula, the possible presence of tail fan, the mouth cone, the frontal pharyngeal structures and the pharynax are surrounded by the bases of the large frontal appendages. However, compared with a series of segmentally arranged, imbricating, paddle−shaped, movable lateral flaps of both Pambdelurion and Kerygmachela, Jianshanopodia possesses distinct complex appendages with tree−like or lamellate branches. The discovery of this rare transitional form not only throws new light on the early diversification of lobopods, and may also have significance with respect to the origin of arthropods.

The environmental characterization of the Lower Permian mesosaur−bearing strata of the Mangrullo Formation (Paraná Basin, northeastern Uruguay) has been controversial. Historically, marine conditions were suggested for this unit, despite the absence of any normal marine fossils. More recently, some authors have argued for freshwater to brackish settings, inferring fluctuating environmental conditions, which would have generated abrupt changes in the composition of the communities. Mesosaurs are the only tetrapods found in this unit, and they colonized the basin at the time of highest isolation, and apparently increased salinity, coincident with a gradual global rise in aridity. An assemblage of extremely low diversity (the “mesosaur community”) developed, with mesosaur reptiles, pygocephalomorph crustaceans, and the vermiform producers of the trace fossil Chondrites as the dominant components. This community may have existed under temporary hypersaline, lagoon−like conditions, as suggested by ecological, anatomical and physiological attributes of its member taxa. This interpretation is supported by sedimentological and mineralogical features of the enclosing rocks, also seen in the correlative Brazilian Iratí and South African Whitehill formations. In the Uruguayan deposits, as well as in their Brazilian correlatives, relatively close volcanic events affected the basin. This particular environment, where bottom waters were depleted of oxygen and hypersaline, retarded decay of the carcasses, and precluded the development of bioturbating organism, and together with bacterial sealing, favoured exquisite preservation of the fossils, including soft tissues. This leads us to consider the fossil−bearing strata of the Mangrullo Formation as a Konservat−Lagerstätte, the oldest known for South America.

Phylogenetic relationships within the important ichthyosaur family Ophthalmosauridae are not well established, and more specimens and characters, especially from the postcranial skeleton, are needed. Three ophthalmosaurid specimens from the Tithonian (Late Jurassic) of the Slottsmøya Member Lagerstätte on Spitsbergen, Svalbard, are described. Two of the specimens are new and are referred to Keilhauia sp. and Ophthalmosauridae indet. respectively, whereas the third specimen consists of previously undescribed basicranial elements from the holotype of Cryopterygius kristiansenae. The species was recently synonymized with the Russian Undorosaurus gorodischensis, but despite many similarities, we conclude that there are too many differences, for example in the shape of the stapedial head and the proximal head of the humerus; and too little overlap between specimens, to warrant synonymy on species level. A phylogenetic analysis of Ophthalmosauridae is conducted, including all Slottsmøya Member specimens and new characters. The two proposed ophthalmosaurid clades, Ophthalmosaurinae and Platypterygiinae, are retrieved under some circumstances, but with little support. The synonymy of three taxa from the Slottsmøya Member Lagerstätte with Arthropterygius is not supported by the present evidence.

Pachycormidae is an extinct group of Mesozoic fishes that exhibits extensive body size and shape disparity. The Late Jurassic record of the group is dominated by fossils from the lithographic limestone of Bavaria, Germany that, although complete and articulated, are not well characterized anatomically. In addition, stratigraphic and geographical provenance are often only approximately known, making these taxa difficult to place in a global biogeographical context. In contrast, the late Kimmeridgian Nusplingen Plattenkalk of Baden-Württemberg is a well-constrained locality yielding hundreds of exceptionally preserved and prepared vertebrate fossils. Pachycormid fishes are rare, but these finds have the potential to broaden our understanding of anatomical variation within this group, as well as provide new information regarding the trophic complexity of the Nusplingen lagoonal ecosystem. Here, we review the fossil record of Pachycormidae from Nusplingen, including one fragmentary and two relatively complete skulls, a largely complete fish, and a fragment of a caudal fin. These finds can be referred to three taxa: Orthocormus sp., Hypsocormus posterodorsalis sp. nov., and Simocormus macrolepidotus gen. et sp. nov. The latter taxon was erected to replace “Hypsocormus” macrodon, here considered to be a nomen dubium. Hypsocormus posterodorsalis is known only from Nusplingen, and is characterized by teeth lacking apicobasal ridging at the bases, a dorsal fin positioned opposite the anterior edge of the anal fin, and a hypural plate consisting of a fused parhypural and hypurals. The holotype specimen contributes additional palaeobiological information, with small teleosteans preserved as gastric contents and ribs showing signs of callus formation. These new findings extend our knowledge of the anatomy and diversity of Pachycormidae, and represent an important first step in understanding factors controlling their distribution and morphological variation in the Late Jurassic of Europe.

Opis:
The alleged Chengjiang scyphozoans Stellostomites eumorphus and Yunnanomedusa eleganta are conspecific. Because of the strong resemblance to the Burgess Shale type species of Eldonia, the Chinese species is relocated to this genus. Eldonia, originally described as a holothurian, on anatomical grounds may as well be interpreted as a lophophorate. The superficial resemblance to jelly-fish is apparently a result of adaptation to pelagic life. Although the extant lophophorates are without exception sedentary, their pelagic relatives were probably abundant in the Early Paleozoic.
W sławnym stanowisku Chengjiang w południowych Chinach, gdzie wczesnokambryjskie zwierzęta zachowane są wraz z wewnętrznymi organami, najpospolitszymi skamieniałościami są kapeluszowate formy opisane niegdyś pod nazwami Stellostomites eumorphus Sun & Hou 1987 i Yunnanomedusa eleganta Sun & Hou 1987. Zgromadzony przez autorów materiał ośmiuset okazów dowodzi, że w istocie jest to jeden gatunek, pokrewny Eldonia ludwigi Walcott 1911 ze środkowego kambru Kolumbii Brytyjskiej, określony więc nazwą Eldonia eumorpha (Sun & Hou 1987). U-kształtne jelito, dwudzielny aparat czułkowy przy otworze gębowym i złożony system kanałów płaszczowych potwierdzają przynależność Eldonia do typu czułkowców Lophophorata, w którym wraz z Rotadiscus i świętokrzyską Velumbrella tworzy gromadę Eldonioidea.

Zhenghecaris shankouensis gen. et sp. nov. is one of the largest “bivalved” arthropods of the Lower Cambrian Maotianshan Shale fauna. Its non−mineralized carapace was dome−like, laterally compressed, armed with rostral features, and probably enclosed the entire body of the animal. Zhenghecaris was provided with elliptical stalked lateral eyes. The carapace design, external ornament and visual organs of Zhenghecaris suggest affinities with the Thylacocephala, an extinct (Lower Silurian to Upper Cretaceous) group of enigmatic arthropods whose origins remain poorly understood. The bivalved arthropodsIsoxys and Tuzoia (Lower and Middle Cambrian) are two other potential thylacocephalan candidates making this group of arthropods a possible new component of Cambrian marine communities. Zhenghecaris, Isoxys, and Tuzoia are interpreted as nektonic animals that probably inhabited the lower level of the water column in shallow shelf settings at depths of perhaps 100–150 m or less. Their feeding mode either in the water column (e.g., mesozooplankton) or on the substrate (e.g., small epibenthos, detritus) is uncertain, although some of these arthropods were possibly mid−water predators (e.g., Isoxys with raptorial appendages).

Opis:
The oldest Jurassic (Kimmeridgian) Plattenkalk occurs in Wattendorf on the northern Franconian Alb (southern Germany). It is a 15 m thick alternation of laminated dolomite and limestone, interbedded with carbonate debris layers in a depression ~2 km across and a few tens of metres deeper than the surrounding microbial-sponge reefs. The Plattenkalk overlies a few tens of metres of microbialsponge biostrome facies and bedded, micritic basinal limestone. The bulk-rock stable isotopes of the micritic basinal facies gradually change from normal marine (δ13C ~ +2‰, δ18O ~ –2‰ VPDB) to lower values (δ13C ~ 0‰, δ18O ~ –6‰) in a ~ 40 m thick interval including Plattenkalk and suggest ageing of the bottom waters. The surrounding reefs are isotopically nearly invariant (δ13C ~ +2‰, δ18O ~ –2‰ VPDB). An isotope anomaly (δ13C of > ~ –9‰) is restricted to the basinal facies and is most pronounced in the biostrome facies. This indicates methanogenesis, which is documented in negative δ13C in dedolomite, calcite-cemented dolomite and calcite concretions and occurred probably mainly below seabed. The Konservat-Lagerstätte was probably deposited near an oxygen minimum zone in a water column with low productivity of organic material. Dolomite is in isotopic equilibrium with Plattenkalk and was probably deposited as protodolomite from chemically modified, aged seawater. 87Sr/86Sr ratios of bulk carbonate are often slightly radiogenic, probably due to random analytical sample contamination by clay minerals. Belemnite and some matrix 87Sr/86Sr is slightly lower than that of Kimmeridgian seawater, either caused by basin restriction or by fluids derived from the diagenesis of Oxfordian rocks below. An equivalent Upper Kimmeridgian depression ~23 km distant and a somewhat younger Konservat-Lagerstätte in Poland show a δ13C isotope anomaly below the main fossil beds. Isotopic evidence for saline bottom waters, the current interpretation, is lacking. This study also shows that micritic carbonates can preserve their early diagenetic, marine δ18O signal, which is correlatable over tens of kilometres
