Opis:
Aim. The foundation of symbolization is a substitution: a mediation between a Representamen and Object. The paper leverages this core mechanic to examine the substitutions within the conscious and unconscious parts of the mind, which compose every act of thinking. Recognizing it is a single instance: the Ego, which regulates this parallel mediation, the paper focuses on the exploration of dichotomies that result from the necessity to perform two symbolizations simultaneously. Concepts. The study’s theoretical framework is determined by Charles S. Peirce’s (1998) concept of sign and Melanie Klein’s (1948) psychoanalytic theory. From semiotic and psychoanalytic angles, this paper explores possible comprehensions of the object in the quasi-mind (Interpretant in infinite semiosis) and actual realization of code in the act of individual thinking (Ego mediating between conscious and unconscious symbolization). Results and conclusion. The main result of the study is the exposure of dichotomies that structure the shared ground for the conscious and the unconscious symbolization. This, in turn, highlights tangible constraints that the mind is subjected to in the act of thinking. Cognitive value. The study’s main contribution is the high-level scheme of dynamics that hold the Ego in reality through the means of unconscious and conscious symbolization. The study also incorporates into coherent model unexamined aspects of individual sign usage: it deploys psychic continuity into the conscious symbolization process (by basing the model on the instance of Ego), which allows addressing the issues arising at the border of conscious and unconscious symbolization.

Symbol
Opis:
Thesis: Aim of the paper is to present Melanie Klein and Charles S. Peirce concept of symbol in order to combine them into scheme that presents conscious and unconscious aspect of thinking through symbolic signs (signs based on convention). Presented concepts: Paper presents concept of symbol in psychoanalytical and semiotic perspective. Psychoanalytical view is based on interpretation of symbol according to object relation paradigm proposed by Klein. There are two reasons for selecting her theory for the model: it is most closely bound with interdependency between communication and thinking plus her concept of proper symbol fulfills definition of symbolic sign in Peirce theory, due to deployment of matter of absence in substitution process. Peirce theory however is selected to present semiotic perspective not only for its good linkage to Klein’s “proper symbol” but also for its accurate understating of object representation in quasi- mind through Representamen and as a result recognition of symbol embedment in code through unlimited semiosis. Chosen concepts are consolidated into psycho-semiotic model of thinking which recognizes symbol to be co-created by unique internal world of unconscious phantasy with simultaneous employment of semiotic devices oriented to external, group order perspective. Results and conclusions: Proposed psycho-semiotic model of thinking enhances psychoanalytic view, based on drive for object, by recognizing communication means required for meaningful relation and with that for thinking itself. As a result conceptualizing thinking processes is enriched with semiotic discoveries such as mechanics and structure of Representamen and Interpretant, along with indispensable code rules, with unlimited semiosis at its core. In turn psychoanalytical view adds to semiotic perspective sensitivity to individual potential and constrains when code is in use and with that raises precision of exploration in the field. Contribution to the field: Proposed model enriches theory of thinking based on object relations with semiotic sign theory, which being focused on communication serves as a frame for establishing object relations and their conceptualization. In turn employing psychoanalytic perspective into semiotic field brings back code theory to actual code usage, and by that expands it to various unconscious forces, which ultimately determine Interpretant

Opis:
The paper presents Ch. S. Peirce's attack on Cartesian epistemology as it was formulated in 1868 article Some Consequences of Four Incapacities. Peirce's arguments are analyzed in the context of possible Descartes' responses. One conclusion of the paper is that Peirce uses two different notions of knowledge and science, and that the distance of his ideas from that of Descartes depends, among others, on which notion we take into account. Another conclusion is that although Peirce's general project of combining falibilism and anti-scepticism looks very attractive (especially in the light of what we now know about the development of science) it generates many problems that Descartes could have pointed out if he had a chance to talk to his two and a half century younger debater. Despite, however, the problems Peircean project generates, it may be regarerd as a forerunner of typical tendencies of 20th century philosophy such as e.g. fallibilism or antifoundationalism.

In the article the author focuses on comparison of two significant figures of theory of science by the reason of the apparent similarities of their conceptions of scientific inquiry. He concentrates mainly on Pierce’s method of discovery represented by abductive inference, epistemology, reconstruction of scientific research, growth of knowledge and problems, which appear in context of Popper’s and Peirce’s conceptions. He analyses Popper’s falsificationistic model of theory of science. He points out that Popper’s account from the aspect of achieving aim, which he determines, is unsuccessful, because he is not able to declare advance to the truth. On the other hand, Peirce appears as an epistemological optimist and accepts additional metaphysical assumption about predestination to aim to the truth, which makes his conception more appealing to scientific community.

The paper aims to show that the quantification theory played a pivotal role in the development of Charles S. Peirce’s semiotic idealism. In the 1860s, Peirce argued that all names and judgments are general and used this claim as the basis for his semiotic idealism. This view was accompanied by the doctrine of scholastic realism, which supplemented his argument against individuality in all its forms. The quantification theory eventually helped Peirce to overcome his early idealism.

The main aim of this article is to present Charles Darwin’s standpoint on religion. Polish as well as foreign literature gives much contradictory information on this topic. Depending on a source one can come across a theistic, agnostic or atheistic interpretation of his views. Darwin himself referred to this issue ambiguously. The author claims that Darwin did so intentionally for he wanted at all costs to avoid the controversy over his family and himself. In fact, later in his life, Darwin rejected God.

Opis:
Comparative analysis of the Polish language poetry of several twentieth century Polish poets living in Great Britain. The article covers the poetry of Rev. Janusz A. Ihnatowicz, Jerzy S. Sito, and others. The thesis of the article is as follows: This group of Polish poets, who were to later group themselves informally around the literary magazines Kontynenty and Merkuriusz, are products of a Polish family and national background. However, arriving in Great Britain as war refugees at the beginning of the 1940s, they grew up in a British cultural environment. The literary influences that worked upon them were the same as those working on their ethnically British colleagues. As a result, the poetry of the “Continental” poets reveals them as British poets, composing in Polish. The “Continental” poets are thus an interesting example of “ethnic” literature in the British homeland, which was once homogeneous, but since the Second World War has become ever more a land of many peoples and tongues. The author of the article used a comparative method (comparing the authors in question among themselves, and to the authors who influenced them, such as T.S. Eliot and G. M. Hopkins) as well as a historical-critical method (setting them in the historical context of Great Britain and Poland). Main results: Since arriving in Great Britain as war refugees at the beginning of the 1940s, the poets in question grew up in a British cultural environment. The results are limited to close readings of selected poems; therefore, the conclusions obtained by this essay may be broadened and deepened by further scholarly study, concentrating on a greater number of poets, different poets, different verses by the poets included. Practical implications of the article. The results of the analysis can be applied to practical didactics: i.e. the teaching of British literature, Polish literature, or literature in general; they also might lie in the area of supportive texts for psychological / sociological studies dealing with language acquisition and the cultural implications of site and maturing. Social implications of the article: Ancillary evidence to discuss the effect of several cultural influences on the same young people. The novelty of the article (new insights introduced by the article with regards to the current literature). To my knowledge, no work speaking of the Continental Group of poets focuses on them as products of Anglo society.

Opis:
The thesis of the article is as follows: Sarbiewski (Sarbievius), a Jesuit priest and neo-Latin poet, was arguably the most visible and influential neo-Latin poet of Baroque Europe. Widely published throughout Europe, he was also translated into many vulgar tongues, including English. The one published translation into English which takes most account of the widest range of Sarbiewski’s work is Odes of Casimir by G. Hils. Given the anti-Catholic animus obtaining in England at the time, it is striking that the works of a Jesuit priest could pass the government imprimatur. The article proves that, in order to do this, Hils resorted not only to completely masking the Catholic, not to say Jesuit, character of the author (palpable in the poems themselves), but also masking his traces by, in some instances, revising the Latin originals printed side by side with the translations. In so doing, Hils not only shows himself to be a cavalier translator, he shows himself to be a dishonest editor who does violence to another author’s intellectual property. The author of the article used a comparative method (comparing the translations to the originals) as well as explications de texte (close readings) of both the original Latin, and translated English, poems. Main results: A cogent comparison of translations based on concrete examples, which also has ramifications for the ethics of translation in general. The results are limited to one translator. It would be interesting to see if such “masking” of the author was carried out on a wider scale in Baroque Britain. Practical implications of the article. The results of the analysis can be applied to practical didactics: i.e. the teaching of British literature, Polish literature, neo-Latin literature or literature in general; they also might lie in the area of translation theory, cultural transfer, and the ethics of translation/interpretation. Social implications of the article: The rights (or lack thereof) of translators to heavily skew the texts they are interested in, so as to make their work more acceptable to the powers that be, or more reflective of their own concerns and beliefs. The novelty of the article resides in the fact that until now no one has conducted a thorough evaluation of Hils’ work. Up until now, their “quality” has been unquestioned; this article proves just how faulty they are.

Teleology
Opis:
With this author writing from and working in a context that is partially indebted to process theology, the following essay does not defend the God of classical theism; that is, the omniscient, omnipotent, immutable God defended by Thomas Aquinas in the Summa theologiae, for example. In some very real sense, this essay may only make sense in the context of process theology as appropriated by some Wesleyan theologians, such as Thomas Jay Oord. For example, I make the contention that primordial chaos only makes sense in a process theology that denies of God creatio ex nihilo and instead asserts the co-eternality of the material universe and God. My overall inclination toward process theology will also become clear in that I describe the mediation of the Holy Spirit on and in the universe in ways that resemble the “persuasive power” of God as described by Alfred North Whitehead. As such, Peirce’s teleology is more than a mere purposive pursuit of a predetermined end; it is a developmental teleology. Thus, final causes evolve, and they are not static. Teleology emerged out of the increasing complexification of life on earth. God gives himself away in act of uncontrolling love without any conditions regarding the potential responses to that love. The many and varied manifestations of complexity that (macro-)evolution has given rise to can be seen as a fulfillment of the teleological goals of God. The kenotic creating Spirit is present “in, with, and under” the processes of biological evolution.

The aim of this paper is to interpret and criticize the theory of theistic natural signs (TNS), formulated by Charles S. Evans. TNS are characteristic experiences or features of the world which cause the person who encounters them to form certain basic beliefs about the existence and nature of God. I propose two interpretations of how TNS work, using the categories of perception and indirect perceptual recognition. I also present two arguments against the theory of TNS. First, I point out that the theory does not explain adequately why TNS are ambiguous, i.e., can be read in different ways. Second, I observe that certain experiences may be taken to be „atheistic natural signs”. Their existence gives one a reason to suspect that God is a deceiver.
