Celem artykułu jest prezentacja modelu miękkiego zrównoważonego rozwoju. Modelowanie miękkie umożliwia badanie powiązań między zmiennymi nieobserwowalnymi. W oparciu o teorię zrównoważonego rozwoju zbudowany został model pokazujący zależności między gospodarką, społeczeństwem a środowiskiem oraz ich wpływ na zrównoważony rozwój. Przeprowadzona analiza wyników wskazuje optymalne proporcje pomiędzy poziomem rozwoju gospodarczego, społecznego i środowiskowego, które umożliwią przyszłym pokoleniom korzystanie z istniejących zasobów i walorów.

The problem of modern society is that it does not integrate its members into functional systems as a collectivity of individuals with a sense of community and interdependence, but makes them a group of consumers who want to achieve success on their own and for their own benefits. However, not everyone is able to achieve the desired goal. As a result, we have social inequalities that significantly affect relationships and social processes. For many years, economists and sociologists have pointed to the fact that economic success does not necessarily translate into welfare (or quality of life) of societies. They even talk about the “breakdown of society” phenomenon, i.e., an increase in antisocial behaviour and a loss of a sense of community. In the current social reality, we can identify many examples of the fact that their fears are justified. All this makes the need for educational measures to stop or even reverse these phenomena threatening social cohesion seem reasonable.

In this article I discuss two main types of development: sustainable and accelerated, which largely contradict each other. I highlight the differences between these two types of developments and describe the reasons behind the growing interest in accelerated development. I also speculate about conditions needed to achieve accelerated development in a democratic setting characterised by neoliberal economy. Moreover, I present arguments that are raised by both opponents and supporters of sustainable development.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to is to provide insights on implementing corporate social responsibility for sustainability (CSRS) concept and show how it differs from basic corporate social responsibility (CSR). Methodology: The paper discusses major issues with references to existing literature and real business cases from S&P500 consumer discretionary sector. Findings: The main finding of this paper is that CSRS could provide the company with a competitive advantage as a growing number of consumers become more sustainable conscious. It could also help to overcome the increasing consumers' skepticism towards corporate social responsibility practices. Finally, it can also be seen as a step forward in defining what types of corporate activities are associated with desirable social and environmental gains. Research limitations: Our sample was restricted to the U.S. firms from the consumer discretionary sector. Therefore, conclusions should not be generalized to other markets. Our study is based on the analysis of environmental and social responsibility statements and assumes that they accurately represent corporate commitment in majority of the cases. Practical implications: CSRS offers corporations the opportunity to use their unique skills, culture, values, resources, and management capabilities to lead social progress by making sustainability part of its internal corporate logic.

The article substantiates the necessity of introducing the dual education elements into professional training of future specialists. They are listed. As a result of the SWOT analysis for the following process it was defined its strengths (VET regulation by principles of a market economy, increased demand in the labour market for dual education graduates, VET quality corresponded to employers’ requirements; close cooperation between government and business-sector for VET issues; mutually beneficial VET for the state, enterprises and VET institutions; increasing students’ motivation to learning; increasing the prestige of VET) and weak (lack of legal support for dual form of education; imperfection and obsolescence of the material and technical base of P(V)E institutions; insufficient readiness of teachers to introduce dual form of education; the difficulty of finding appropriate enterprises and setting agreements with employers; employers’ reluctance to enter into agreements with students at the beginning of their training; significant time and financial costs for updating the technological park of P(V)E institution ; the need for special psychological and pedagogical training of mentors, instructors – production workers; imperfection of mechanisms for implementing multichannel financing of VET). The questions concerning the dual education system in Ukraine were studied by scientists: N. Abashkina, V. Anischenko, I. Boychevska, T. Kozak, N. Nychkalo, V. Radkevych and others. It is shown that the dual form of education can be a tool for providing education for the sustainable development of society. The features of the dual form of education in Ukraine are analyzed: strengthening the practical component of VET; intellectualization and individualization of VET; the implementation of VET in a real production environment; development of social partnership in VET institution; conformity of VET in VET institution with the regional infrastructure; mentor system introduction; creating innovative educational and production environment for VET. The organizational basis for VET education introduction in P(V)E institutions is given to ensure sustainable the development of society.

The paper researches theory and methodology for development of state programmes for sustainable development. The focus is made on the distribution of powers and responsibilities for the implementation of environmental projects and schemes. At present the dynamic environment force business organizations to actively search for new ways and methods to remain competitive. Due to this reason business organizations more frequently stress social initiatives, which present an organization as an active member of the community, which cares for employees, environment, and society. This article discusses whether principles of social responsibility being implemented at business organizations can be adjusted at universities as well. Social responsibility renders great challenges for universities that pursue to educate young people able to responsibly deal with social problems. The author presents the concepts of sustainable development in Poland on the example of Rzeszow, from the legal analysis to the social concept. Sustainable development is a process of change that ensures the needs of the present generation without diminishing the development opportunities of future generations. The area development of cities is closely related to the sustainable development. For this reason, in the further part of the study, a short genesis of the development of Rzeszów is presented, with attention paid to the maintenance of sustainable development. In conclusion, the author shows the de lega ferenda conclusions, such as: the city authorities should pay more attention to the issue of introducing certain restrictions in the field of CO² emissions by reducing vehicular traffic in the city center, finding alternative means of public transport. The construction of large housing estates on the areas newly connected to the administrative borders of the city also seems to be reasonable. With a balanced area development of the city, it is important to enact and introduce an appropriate spatial development plan.

Sustainable consumption and production has been the subject of keen demand in many countries around the world for over 20 years, especially in the countries of the European Union. Despite this, negative environmental effects are still observed, caused by growing consumption and excessive economic growth. Many environmental strategies involve the usual increased resource efficiency and eco- -efficiency of processes and products.However, this does not fully balance the environmental impact caused by the increased consumption, which in the EU is four times higher than public expenditure. However, there are very large differences in the approach to this difficult topic. The northern states of the EU turn out to be more inclinedto being involved in promoting and subsidizing sustainable consumption and production than the countries of southern Europe. The main purpose of the article is to compare sustainable development in the countries of southern and northern Europe andto fathom what the reason forthose differences is,based on specific and selected indicators and influences on countries’ economic development. The research is based on indicators of,among others: domestic material consumption, recycled and composted municipal waste, atmospheric emissions and organic farming.

As the social responsibility notion developed, it caught the interest of not only businesses but also other organizations, including universities. The project described in the article aimed at researching how higher education institutions develop their social responsibility strategies. The desk research carried out covered the analysis of GRI database entries where the universities’ social responsibility and sustainable development reports are stored as well as the analysis of selected reports and universities’ websites. The two main findings of that research are: the growing social responsibility of the universities has been proved, and a vast diversity of the strategies applied was observed. As a result, seven models of creating the university strategy have been identified and described in the paper. In conclusion, we must stress that there are no universal standards regarding the placement of the strategy in the university general development plans, neither its scope, the process of creation nor the way it is communicated.

Right of humanity to development is described within the global search for responses to the planetary challenges. The idea of the rights of humanity is an attempt to propose the new approach to human rights protection, based on global interdependency. The article offers analysis of soft law documents on human right to development, as well as regional instruments for protection of human and peoples’ rights. It is argued that right to sustainable development viewed as a right of humanity may create a broader mechanism of protection both for individual human being and humanity in general.

W czasach kryzysu Europy nadmierne koncentrowanie się na kwestiach rynkowych i gospodarczych w analizowaniu przyczyn i szukaniu rozwiązan wspo łczesnych problemo w wydaje mi się działaniem niedostatecznym. Co więcej, uważam za niebezpieczne zaniedbywanie dobrobytu obywateli rozumianego szerzej niż dostatek zasobo w finansowych. W niniejszej pracy, korzystając z badań naukowych prowadzonych w celu odnalezienia korelato w deklarowanego poziomu szczęścia/dobrostanu (SWB, Subjective Well-Being), uznawszy je za najtrafniejszy miernik skuteczności polityki danego rządu, chciałbym pokazac alternatywne do najbardziej obecnie rozpowszechnionych teorii szczęścia. W pracy przedstawiam porównanie dwóch dominujących ostatnimi czasy współczynników, używanych w mierzeniu sukcesu danej polityki (IEF - Index of Economic Freedom oraz GCI, Global Competitiveness Index) ze stosunkowo niedawno stworzonym trzecim (SDGI, Sustainable Development Goals Index), prezentując badania wykazujące najwyższą moc tego ostatniego w przewidywaniu poziomu dobrostanu jednostek. Jeśli wyniki tych badań mona uznać za poprawne, oznacza to, że obecne, uważane przez niektórych za nader redukcjonistyczne, podejście do kwestii poprawy losu obywateli jest mylne i należy przynajmniej rozważyć inną drogę. Jedną z propozycji „innej drogi” przedstawiam w skrócie w formie opisu celów paradygmatu zrównoważonego rozwoju.
In the time of the European crisis, I find actions motivated by excessive attention paid to the financial and economic matters in analysing its reasons and the search for ways of amending it largely insufficient. Moreover, I believe it is dangerous to neglect the well-being of citizens understood more broadly than just a deficit of financial resources. In this paper, basing on research into finding correlates of subjective well-being of individuals, believing that they are the most effective measure of the quality of policies of any given government, I want to show an alternative approach to the current mainstream theories of happiness. I present a comparison of two dominant indexes used for measuring the quality of governance (IEF - Index of Economic Freedom and GCI, Global Competitiveness Index) and juxtapose them with the relatively recently created third index (SDGI, Sustainable Development Goals Index), citing results suggesting a higher explanatory power of the latter in predicting the well-being of individuals. If those results are correct, it seem that the contemporary, deemed by some to be overly reductionist, approach to improving the well-being of individuals is wrong and a different attitude should at least be considered. One of the „different attitudes” is presented in short in the form of a list of goals within the paradigm of sustainable development.

The paper deals with the issue of the role of culture as an element of the sustainable devel-opment paradigm. However culture as an element of economic analysis of development had been underestimated for a long time, the rise of the paradigm of sustainable development made a win-dow of opportunity for culture in this context. As the shift from the industrial to sustainable model necessitated change of the values pursued, culture has made its way to the development policy due to its integrative approach to economic, social and natural systems. In this context the paper aims to firstly present a brief outline of the landmarks in economic writings and the authors that drew attention to the value of cultural aspects in economic analysis. Then it goes on to identify characteristics of sustainable development that made it possible to naturally fit cul-tural considerations into the paradigm framework. Finally, the paper identifies a set of traits for culturally sustainable development and supports them with examples verifying the role of cul-ture in economic development with a special focus to the European Union countries. The paper concludes with a critical account of features that make it difficult to include culture into the development analysis that have its roots either in the history of economic thought, cultural or psychological considerations.
Artykuł zajmuje się kwestią roli kultury jako elementu paradygmatu zrównoważonego roz-woju. Pomimo faktu, iż kultura jako element analizy ekonomicznej była przez długi czas niedoce-niana, powstanie teorii rozwoju zrównoważonego pozwoliło włączyć kulturę jako ważny element rozwoju ekonomicznego. Zmiana wartości, jaka została wymuszona w wyniku porzucenia para-dygmatu przemysłowego i implementacji modelu zrównoważonego rozwoju, umożliwiła również włączenie kultury do polityki rozwoju głównie ze względu na zintegrowaną interpretację syste-mów gospodarczego, społecznego i środowiska naturalnego, jaką czynnik kulturowy podkre-ślał. W tym kontekście artykuł przedstawia zarys najważniejszych dzieł myśli ekonomicznej, począwszy od ekonomii klasycznej, które podkreślały rolę czynnika kulturowego w analizie eko-nomicznej. Następnie artykuł identyfikuje cechy teorii rozwoju zrównoważonego, które umożliwi-ły włączenie uwarunkowań kulturowych do tej teorii. Ponadto celem artykułu jest również przed-stawienie zbioru cech, którymi charakteryzuje się kulturowo zorientowany rozwój zrównoważony oraz przedstawia przykłady dowodzące roli kultury w rozwoju ekonomicznym ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem tej roli w krajach Unii Europejskiej. W tym kontekście zostały przedstawione trzy główne obszary kulturowo zorientowanego rozwoju zrównoważonego, takie jak: kultura jako cel rozwoju, kultura jako sposób rozwoju oraz kultura jako czynnik rozwoju. Artykuł kończy identy-fikacja czynników, które spowodowały i wciąż są źródłem niepełnego wykorzystania kultury w analizie rozwoju społeczno-gospodarczego mających swoje korzenie zarówno w historii myśli ekonomicznej, jak i uwarunkowaniach kulturowych i psychologicznych.
