    This paper centres on an existential consciousness reading of the production of “Abantu Stand” by Rhodes University Theatre. “Abantu Stand” is a product of pieces of workshop sketches on current social, economic and political conversations in South Africa. From my participation in the back stage conversations of the artists and the production crew towards the final making of the production, to the discussions with the audience after each performance, I realise that, of a truth, as the closing song of the performance re-echoes, “It is not yet uhuru” for the South Africans, particularly, the people on the peripheral of the society!” In “Abantu Stand,” in spite of her post-apartheid status, South Africa appears as a volatile contested space. Of course, in reality, in many areas, 70 to 85% of lands remain in the hands of the settlers. There are towns and settlements outside of towns – for till now, majority of the blacks live in shanties outside the main towns. Inequality, mutual suspicion, mismanagement and oppression operate at different levels of the society – from race to race, gender to gender and tribe to tribe. There is the challenge of gender/sexual categorisation and the tension of “coming out” in relation to the residual resisting traditional culture of heterosexuals. The sketches in the performance are woven around these contentious issues to give room for free conversations. The desire is to provoke a revolutionary change. However, one thing is evident: South Africa, with the relics of apartheid, is still a state in transition.

    With the Federation of Australia, aspiration for racial homogeneity was firmly established as being fundamental to national identity. Therefore, increasing criticism was directed against Asian employment in the pearl-shelling industry of Broome. It was not least against the backdrop of population politics, that several efforts were implemented to disestablish the purportedly ‘multiracial enclave’ in ‘White Australia.’ These culminated in “the white experiment,” i.e. the introduction of a dozen British men to evince European fitness as pearl divers and initiate the replacement of Asian pearling crews. Embedded in these endeavours were reflections of broader discourses on ‘white supremacy’ and racist discrimination.

    Opis:
    Aim of the study. The aim of this study is the examination of postcolonial imaginary in contemporary Italian cinema, the production of which has significantly increased. Speaking of postcolonialism , we need to first present the colonial legacy of Italy, so that we can then smoothly proceed to the postcolonial study of film with the following analysis of particular movies. Method. Analysis was based on the most important concepts of postcolonial film research. Results. Analysed movies less frequently touch on the subject of postcolonialism directly, also they consider different factors which caused the current migration tendencies, and also the creation of diasporic communities. Postcolonial film research is more frequently applied to the concept of multiculturality. Conclusions. Films under discussion represent contemporary Europe as shaped by the colonial past, which has created a lasting impact on its current state, and also through the prism of what followed it, which was migration - currently one of Europe’s major problems.
    Cel badań. Celem poniższej pracy jest zbadanie postkolonialnych obrazów we współczesnym kinie włoskim, których produkcja w ostatnich dwudziestu latach uległa znacznemu rozwojowi, nie tylko we Włoszech, ale i w całej Europie. Mówiąc o postkolonialiźmie w filmie, należy najpierw przedstawić kolonialne dziedzictwo Włoch, aby płynnie przejść do postkolonialnych studiów nad filmem, a co za tym idzie do analizy konkretnych tytułów filmowych. Metody badań. Przedmiotem moich badań są współczesne filmy włoskie, których tematyka pozostaje ściśle związana z postkolonializmem. Analiza została przeprowadzona na podstawie najważniejszych koncepcji postkolonialnych badań nad filmem (teoria Kobeny Mercer i Stuarta Hall, Elli Shohat i Roberta Stam oraz Laury Marks, Sandry Ponzanesi i Marguerite Waller). Wyniki badań. Analizowane filmy coraz częściej nie dotyczą bezpośrednio postkolonializmu, uwzględnia się inne niż tylko kolonialne czynniki sprawcze warunkujące dzisiejsze ruchy migracyjne oraz powstawanie wspólnot diasporycznych. Wnioski. Omawiane filmy ukazują współczesną Europę jako ukształtowaną przez kolonialną przeszłość, która wywarła trwały wpływ na teraźniejszość oraz przez pryzmat jej następstwa, jakim jest zjawisko migracji, które obecnie stanowi duży problem w Europie. Postkolonialne badania nad filmem, coraz częściej odnoszą się do pojęcia multikulturowości.

    W moim artykule przybliżyłem genezę największego sprzeciwu Afroamerykanów wobec rasowej segregacji i prawnej dyskryminacji w Stanach Zjednoczonych, którego esencję stanowił Ruch na Rzecz Praw Obywatelskich zapoczątkowany w połowie lat pięćdziesiątych XX wieku. Skoncentrowałem się na trzech wydarzeniach, które stały się symbolicznymi wyznacznikami początku Rewolucji Czarnych, jak określa się wydarzenia lat 1954 – 1968. Poruszone zostały kwestie przyczyn i uwarunkowań wybuchu tego masowego ruchu walki Afroamerykanów z dyskryminacją i znaczenia tych wydarzeń dla Afroamerykanów i społeczeństwa amerykańskiego. Trzy tytułowe „iskry”, których analizy się podjąłem, dotyczą różnych aspektów życia i pozornie wydają się nie być ze sobą związane. Cóż może mieć ze sobą wspólnego morderstwo młodego, czarnoskórego chłopca, decyzja Sądu Najwyższego Stanów Zjednoczonych oraz bojkot publicznych środków transportu? W artykule starałem się wykazać, że poszukując genezy wybuchu Rewolucji Czarnych niechybnie natrafiamy na te trzy wydarzenia i trudno jest przeoczyć ich ogromne znaczenie dla Ruchu na Rzecz Praw Obywatelskich.
    In the paper I examine the genesis of the largest opposition of Afro-Americans against the racial segregation and legal discrimination in the United States, whose essence is the Civil Rights Movement initiated in the mid 1950s. I focused on the three events, which have become the symbolic determinants of the beginning of the Black Revolution, as the events of the 1954-1968 are called. The questions of causes and determinants of the rising of this mass movement of Afro-Americans’ struggle against discrimination as well as the meaning of those events for the Afro-Americans and the American society have been touched. The three eponymous “sparks”, which I further analyze, refer to the various aspects of life and seemingly are not connected to each other. What may the murder of a young black boy, the verdict of the Supreme Court of the United States and the boycott of the public transport have in common? In the paper I attempt to prove, that when searching for the genesis of the breakout of the Black Revolution, one will inevitably come across those three events and it is difficult to overlook their great importance in regard to the Civil Rights Movement.
