The author of the article discusses in a chronological order the literature on Iceland written in Polish starting from the seventeenth-century account of the journey to the island by Daniel Vetter. Most attention is devoted to the accounts created in the second half of the twentieth (reports by Lucjan Wolanowski and Polish sailors) and at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Recent publications are largely based on blog experiences. In quantitative as well as qualitative terms, we observe the perspective of changing the geographical and cultural imagination of Polish literature at the beginning of the 21st century: within the North-South axis one can notice the recently emerging diagonal axis linking Poland with Iceland. It is worth examining this issue in more detail in a while.

Opis:
The history of translating Polish literature in South Korea goes almost 100 years back. In the article Polish literary works translated into Korean have been presented in chronological order. The first Polish literary work offered to Korean readers was Quo vadis by Henryk Sienkiewicz. It was translated from Japanese into Korean language in 1916. Since then Kore-an translators have been presenting Polish literature to their compatriots almost constantly and in many different ways. This also applies to the very difficult moments in the history of Korea such as Japanese occupation (1910–1940) or so called „cold war” period. Around 70 works of Polish literature have been published in Korea so far (not mentioning re¬ editions and several different translations of the same work). Some works have been published several times, translated by different people and published by different publishing houses (for example Quo vadis by Henryk Sienkiewicz, Eighth day of a week by Marek Hłasko, Solaris by Stanisław Lem).

The author of the article – Yi Lijun, a distinguished translator of Polish literary works into Chinese – attempts to present the reception of Henryk Sienkiewicz’s works in China, con-centrating on the issues concerning translations. She presents vignettes of the greatest scholars’ discussing Sienkiewicz’s works, the history of reception of Sienkiewicz’s writings, as well as the methods of popularizing his novels. She concentrates on problematics concerning the process of translating Trylogy from Polish language into Chinese, pointing out the difficulties and mistakes made by translators. She discusses her own work on translating the novels of the author of Quo vadis.

The reception of Polish literature in Lithuania is a complex phenomenon. For a long time there was a dominant trend of expanding the area of Lithuanian literature by incorporating into it some of the Polish-language authors who maintained contacts with Lithuania. As a result, the horizons of national literature naturally broadened. However, the reception of Julian Tuwim’s writing belongs to a different category. It needs to be remembered that in the Soviet period Polish literature offered Lithuanian intellectuals a passage to the outside world. It was in the work of western poets, Tuwim’s work included, that Lithuanian authors sought ways of expanding their avant-garde forms and dictions. Tuwim’s poetry has been largely read in its original, Polish version; therefore, there are few books collecting his poems. However, the influence of Tuwim’s work is recognized by some experts in translations of his work. However, Tuwim was made publicly known in Lithuania thanks an argument over the naming one of the street in Vilnius after his name. The article analysis public reactions to this argument and shows how this non-literaryevent made Tuwim a public figure in the country.

The article presents the figure of Karl Dedecius (1921–2016) by exploring his activity as a translator and ambassador of Polish – but also Russian – literature and culture in German-speaking countries (mainly Germany). Having spent his youth in pre-war multicultural Łódź and – after the outbreak of WW II – having been a prisoner of war in Soviet camps, in December 1949 Dedecius moved to the GDR, from where he fled three years later with his family to West Germany. For 25 years he had divided – his life between literary translation, notably poetry, work as an insurance agent and family matters, and after retiring he managed to set up the Deutsches Polen-Institut, a non-governmental institution devoted to the popularisation of Polish literature in Germany, which he led in the years 1980–1998. As one of his close collaborators states, Dedecius’s editorial legacy comprises about 200 books which he either translated, wrote or edited, with poetry translations and literary essays being the core of his literary activity. He rendered some 3,000 poems of roughly 300 Polish poets into German and composed ca. 10 books that present and analyse – chiefly the 20th-century – Polish literature; some of them also contain essays on translation, fragments of which are cited and commented in the present article. Another important source and basis of considerations is Dedecius’s autobiography Ein Europäer aus Lodz [A European from Łódź], which explains the background of the author’s life at its different stages.

The aim of this article is the analysis of the imagined topographies of the East in the works of Andrzej Stasiuk. Territorial imagologies of this writer create a field of interferences between the real and the imagined, conditioned by local perspective. For this reason the image of the East in Stasiuk’s prose includes both the travel experience as well as cultural stereotypes. Consequently, this territorial imagology is the example of the imagined counter-geography, created from an internal point of view, and the writing itself becomes a specific place of memory.

Podstawą źródłową poczynionych ustaleń są odtajnione archiwalia przechowywane w Rosyjskim Państwowym Archiwum Historii Najnowszej (Российский государственный архив новейшей истории – RGANI), pochodzące z zespołu akt sowieckiej partii komunistycznej. Wynika z nich, że sprawy książki polskiej były monitorowane przez Kreml w całym analizowanym okresie. W Moskwie interesowano się przede wszystkim polskimi literatami i ich twórczością pod kątem odstępstw od ideologicznego schematu oraz sposobu przestawiana Rosji i ZSRR. Ponadto władze sowieckie analizowały i oceniały ruch wydawniczy w Polsce. Próbowano wpływać na ofertę wydawniczą książek polskich w ZSRR i radzieckich w Polsce, stosując mechanizmy porozumień zarówno dwustronnych, jak i wielostronnych (systematyczne narady organów wydawniczych państw bloku wschodniego).
State Archive of Contemporary History (Российский государственный архив новейшей истории – RGANI), and encompassed the declassifi ed materials from the fond of the Soviet Communist Party. The materials demonstrate that the Kremlin monitored closely issues concerning the book in Poland during the whole period in question. Moscow was predominantly interested in the Polish writers and their literary production from the point of view of its divergences with the communist ideological paradigm, and the way Russia and the Soviet Union were presented to the Polish public. Apart from that the Soviet authorities analysed and evaluated the Polish publishing sector. Efforts were undertaken to infl uence the publication of Polish books in the Soviet Union, and the Soviet literary output in Poland. To this end bilateral and multilateral agreements were negotiated and signed, during periodically conducted meetings of publishing officials from the Eastern Bloc.

This paper discusses questions like the irony of history, the lack of illusions, and the prophecy of violence in three classic World War I novels by Jaroslav Hašek, Vladislav Vančura and Józef Wittlin, written in the decades after 1918. The novels have at least three aspects in common: first, the poetics of each is marked in a compressed way by the style of narrating the assassination in Sarajevo in 1918; second, three picaresque figures – Švejk, Řeka and Niewiadomski, respectively – standing in the centre of each novel; and, third, in addition to the war itself, each novel looks proleptically at its consequences, even if the narrated time does not extend to the end of the war. The paper tries to reflect on the novels as the literature of post-imperialist violence. Rhetorical figures of barbarization and self-barbarization, inversion of subject and object, fragmentation of space are particularly significant in the books, demonstrating the aesthetic processing of the reversal from euphoria, over the end of the war, to frustration, over the continuing violence. More specifically, these figures correspond with a remarkable degree with the unfulfilled peace after 1918.

The article is dedicated to introducing Polish children’s books into the publishing market in Korea. Before the generation of translators completed their education at Polish Philology Faculty at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (founded in 1987), Polish works had been translated through different foreign languages. Poland is regarded as a country of interesting books for children, mostly because of the old tradition of Polish school of illustration, but also due to some illustrative works of young artists, or pictorial books such as the ones by Iwona Chmielewska. There are also interesting publications which came as the result of Polish¬ Korean cooperation – books that were created by Polish authors, edited by Koreans, published in Korea as Korean products. As cultural products created by many people from both countries (Korea and Poland) such books are able to cross the countries’ borders.

Hipotezą badawczą, na której opiera się artykuł jest stwierdzenie, iż w twórczości Jerzego Andrzejewskiego można dostrzec wpływy/refl eksy nowej powieści francuskiej. Wychodząc od próby powiązania biografi i pisarza z jego twórczością, spróbuję wskazać takie cechy niektórych utworów Andrzejewskiego (między innymi Bram raju oraz Miazgi), które pozwolą na wyodrębnienie paraleli pomiędzy poetyką tychże dzieł a stylem wypracowanym przez autorów nouveau roman.
The research hypothesis, on which this article is based, is the statement, that new novel infl uences can be found in Jerzy Andrzejewski’s works. Beginning with an att empt to link the writer’s biography with his work, I will att empt to indicate those characteristics of Andrzejewski’s works (especially among Bramy raju and Miazga) which will enable us to extract some parallels between the poetics of those works and the style created (elaborated) by new novel authors.
