There were three conferences of Asian countries where Polish Philology faculties exist, held between 2007 and 2010. China, Korea, Japan and recently also Mongolia, became interested into closer cooperation in order to exchange experiences and facilitate students and teacher exchange program. The first conference was held in Seul, second in Tokio, the third one in Bejing. Each of them created an opportunity to design further cooperation. The author of the article concentrates mostly on the third conference.

Polish-Lithuanian negotiations in Konigsberg
Opis:
In December 1927, at the Polish-Lithuanian meeting in Geneva the state of war between the two countries was lifted. As a consequence of this meeting, both sides decided to take the necessary measures to establish bilateral relations in the future. The Polish government counted on constructive dialogue, which allowed to sign the agreement on launching the railway transport, postal and telegraph service, transit and local border traffic. The Lithuanian side did not recognize the need to establish the direct relations, and the note of losing Vilnius by Lithuania in 1920 was heard in the comments of Lithuanian diplomats. The Polish-Lithuanian negotiations started on 30 March 1928 in Konigsberg. Their pace aroused keen interest among the diplomatic missions and was extensively commented in the Polish and Lithuanian press. The Polish side greeted the beginning of the negotiations with great hope, counting on normalizing the mutual relations. However, with time it became obvious for the Polish delegation that reaching the agreement suggested by Poland would be impossible because of the unrelenting stance of Lithuanians. Signing an agreement on the local border traffic was the only result of the negotiations.

The article presents another summary of film events in a year 2010. Films that can be found here are: Benek, directed by Robert Gliński, and concerning Silesian subject, Chrzest (The Christening) second film by young Polish director Marcin Wrona, Czarny czwartek (Black Thursday) which tells the story of the strikes in 1970, and Joanna by Feliks Falk that offers a new perspective on the Second World War. Besides these, some other descriptions of the films that were released in 2010 or in the beginning of 2011 can be found here: Matka Teresa od kotów (Mother Teresa of Cats), Młyn i krzyż (Mill and the Cross), Och, Karol 2, Różyczka (Little Rose), Sala samobójców (Suicide Room), Skrzydlate świnie (Winged Pigs) and Weekend. The article discusses the history of the formation and activity of the Polish orthodox chaplaincy in the three western occupation zones of Germany after World War II. At that time, there were hundreds of thousands of refugees from Poland in the area. In terms of religion they constituted a mosaic. The followers of the Orthodox Church were the second largest group after the Catholics. The authorities of the Republic of Poland in exile felt obliged to provide these people with religious care. Led by Archbishop Sawa (Sowietov), priests carried out the ministry in Germany. The author has analyzed the political and social conditions in which the structures of the Polish Orthodox Church in refugee camps in West Germany were organized and functioned. The author has also presented the influence of the ethnic factor on the activity of the Polish Orthodox clergy.

The article presents the history of Polish Studies at the University of Foreign Languages in Seul. The author, who is the Head of Polish Department, discusses its foundation and development. He presents also the activity of the Department over past twenty years – shaping of the curricula and their present form, activity of the staff in the field of academic research and translations, and international cooperation. Polish department at Hankuk Uni-versity of Foreign Studies was founded in 1987 and it initiated Polish Studies in Korea. Currently, about 130 people are studying there. Classes are held by 10 teachers and scholars, two people from Poland among them. Graduates of the Department are likely to obtain employment, due to the good economic relations between Poland and Korea.

The names of interiors in noblemen’s mansion houses Architectural and functional transformations of noblemen’s mansion houses present an extremely appealing subject for a linguist as they convey very rich vocabulary. The article describes how the residents of mansion houses “organized” their living space. I would like to focus particularly on the lexis which served as a means to outline this space. I examine its structure and etymology. The excerpted sources of the material (the names of the interiors, edifices and less frequently isolated spaces) are rural self-help books from the 19th century, mansion’s inventories and architectural maps from the 16th – 19th centuries. The accumulated vocabulary depicts changing needs of a human being.

The author of the article discusses in a chronological order the literature on Iceland written in Polish starting from the seventeenth-century account of the journey to the island by Daniel Vetter. Most attention is devoted to the accounts created in the second half of the twentieth (reports by Lucjan Wolanowski and Polish sailors) and at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Recent publications are largely based on blog experiences. In quantitative as well as qualitative terms, we observe the perspective of changing the geographical and cultural imagination of Polish literature at the beginning of the 21st century: within the North-South axis one can notice the recently emerging diagonal axis linking Poland with Iceland. It is worth examining this issue in more detail in a while.

The article analyzes both the Polish-Jewish literature and press articles as well as the way they depicted the Białystok pogrom. The Polish-Jewish reaction has been juxtaposed with opinions published in the Polish press.

The article presents the transformations of Ludwik Krzywicki’s views on race. First, based on the biographical and intellectual context, an important place of anthropological reflection of the author of Ludy [Peoples] is pointed out. Krzywicki, aware of the threats coming from the young discipline, perceived it, however, as the chance for the development of science and society. Further in the article, the problems of researchers with ambiguous value judgments about race appearing in the anthropological works of the Polish Marxist are discussed and compared with the difficulties of Krzywicki himself, who from the very beginning of dealing with ethnographic research tried to systematize the reflection on the subject. The fuzzy scope of meaning, ideological burdens, arbitrariness, relativity, and conventionality of the concept of race ultimately led the author to reject the problematic category but also contributed to the development of quantitative and qualitative sociological analysis in his later studies.
