Opis:: The aim of this paper was to indicate on which stage of an economic development path is probably Poland. The subject of this paper was one of the economic development paths, named usually the investment development path, which model has been shaped mainly by J. H. Dunning and R. Narula. This model is also similar to the model of the economic development path proposed by M. Porter. Therefore, were discussed the changes in the main elements of this model, which took place in the Polish economy in 1995-2012. Those elements were the trade structure diveded by the degree of technological sophistication, direct investment and indicators of economic performance. In order to verify if in the case of Poland have been occurred economic dependences assumed by the representatives of this model also was carried out correlation and regression analysis. The results of the study suggest that Poland shifted to the third stage of analyzed economic development path where more emphasis is placed on innovations as the country moves toward producing more technology intensive products.

Opis:: Throughout the studies on the impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) on the economic growth of the host economy, there is a significant heterogeneity in terms of the results; not only between the theory and empirics, but also within empirics itself. The aim of this study is to explain the heterogeneity of results of the previous studies on the benefits of hosting FDI. This work uses the topic-relevant literature to present the key benefits of inward FDI, which are then translated into a mathematical model, which the direct and indirect benefits are derived from and differentiated between. Firstly, this work develops a production function including the key direct and indirect effects of hosting FDI in order to (through the proof of endogenization of FDI) show that a simple inclusion of FDI as the next (usually along with capital and labor) factor of growth may lead to spurious and, therefore, inconsistent results. Secondly, the study introduces the Foreign Direct Investment Benefits Absorption Path, which due to its classification of host economies into four distinctive groups, differentiating between direct and indirect benefits of FDI, and showing their different ways of impacting the host’s economy provides a unique insight into the topic of heterogeneity of results on the impact of hosting FDI. It also provides a blueprint for further research into this topic. Lastly, the Foreign Direct Investment Benefits Absorption Path is used to develop FDI-related strategies aimed at increasing the economic growth of host countries.

Opis:: This paper seeks to explore the issues of innovation and new path creation in the UK and Germany, illustrated through the case of the modern wind power industry. Taking an evolutionary perspective drawing on path dependence theory, the paper examines the role of niche environments in the creation of new economic pathways. The research finds that new economic pathways are more likely to develop in places where niche conditions provide receptive environments for innovations to flourish. The policy implications of the research include the importance of supporting niche environments that encourage growth in new sectors and the need for financial support to bring innovations to market, to encourage the development of new economic pathways.

Opis:: Zainicjowany ponad ćwierć wieku temu proces transformacji ustrojowej krajów byłego bloku wschodniego miał charakter bezprecedensowy. Wyjaśnienie jego wymiaru ekonomicznego – możliwych i ostatecznie obieranych dróg przejścia od gospodarki nakazowo-rozdzielczej do gospodarki rynkowej – już przez samą tę bezprecedensowość, ale i niezwykłą złożoność stanowiło i wciąż stanowi wyzwanie dla nauk ekonomicznych. Celem artykułu jest ocena, w jakiej mierze współczesna ekonomia poradziła sobie z tym wyzwaniem i próba uzasadnienia tezy, iż przy objaśnianiu zróżnicowanych trajektorii rozwojowych krajów transformacji i tłumaczeniu przyczyn osiąganych na tym polu sukcesów (lub ich braku) zdecydowanie bardziej adekwatne okazały się koncepcje stworzone przez reprezentantów szkół leżących na obrzeżach lub poza głównym nurtem badań ekonomicznych.
The process of systemic transformation in the countries of the former Eastern Bloc, spearheaded about a quarter of a century ago, was unprecedented in the economic history of the world. Its economic dimension – the available, and ultimately chosen, paths of transition from socialism to market economy – has challenged economic sciences. The challenge has been all the greater not only because of the novelty of the phenomenon, but also because of its unusual complexity. The paper aims to assess to what extent contemporary economics has succeeded in responding to this challenge and to prove that the concepts proposed by the representatives of schools from the margin of, or beyond, the mainstream economics turn out to be significantly more appropriate for explaining the diversity of transformation paths and elucidating the reasons behind the achievements (or lack thereof) of some countries.
