Opis:
The article presents two studies validating the dimensional model of parenting by Skinner, Johnson, and Snyder (2005). This model synthesizes various constructs related to parent-child relations from the recent literature. On the basis of a broad literature review, this model distinguishes three conceptual dimensions:warmth – rejection, structure – chaos, and autonomy support – coercion. Skinner et al. (2005)’s model was intended to integrate a number of theoretical constructs of parent-child relations. Thus, the distinguishability of its constituent parts is key. The following article describes a validation of the model in Poland. The first study was carried out on a sample of 969 adolescents, and the second – on a sample of 269 parents. In the adolescent sample, the measurement model achieved a good fit to data, but the individual constructs were highly intercorrelated, which weakened the rationale for distinguishing them. In the parent sample, high correlations between the constructs led to a poor fit to data. Thus, only a general measure of parent-child relation quality was obtained. A bi-factor analysis was also ran to determine the role of specific factors generated alongside the general factor. The validation was a partial success in the parent sample, for which a short version of the questionnaire measuring warmth, structure, and autonomy support was developed.

Opis:
In her paper the author points to the impoverishment of the popular and policy discourse on good parenting and highlights a glaring absence of the moral dimension and moral language in the debate. This fact unveils a somewhat flattened understanding of the process of child-rearing - devoid of moral reflection, moral choices, and moral concepts, thus giving the impression that modern parenting is solely a matter of skilful application of universal, neutral, scientifically verified procedures and tools. Such discourse promotes, so called, effective parenting conceptualized as a set of skills or ‘the science of parenting’ rather than the process that should assign moral meaning to the things parents and educators do with children. The paper reveals weaknesses of such conceptualization by unveiling some of its underlying assumptions that are questionable and yet determine the discussion on and approach to child-rearing and parenting in Britain today.

Opis:
Introduction: Emotional intelligence can be determined by various factors related to the functioning of the family and the parents, including the parenting attitudes they display. Prior research confirms the relationship between some parenting attitudes and children’s emotional intelligence, though it has chiefly focused on adolescents. The aim of the presented research was to determine whether a relationship between emotional intelligence and parenting attitudes retrospectively evaluated by young adults exists, while taking into consideration the parent’s and the child’s gender, as well as the family characteristics. Method: Two hundred and fifty seven young adults, aged 20–25, students of various universities, were tested with the Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (INTE) by Schutte, Malouff, Hall, Haggerty, Cooper, Golden, and Dornheim, adapted into Polish and standardized by Jaworowska and Matczak, as well as with the Retrospective Evaluation of Parenting Attitudes Questionnaire (KPR-Roc) by Plopa. The study also controlled for de-mographic factors. Results: A positive relationship exists between the mothers’ attitudes of acceptance/ rejection and autonomy and their daughters’ emotional intelligence and ability to utilize emotions in thinking and behavior. No relationship between the mothers’ parenting attitudes and the young women’s ability to recognize emotions was found. A weak relationship between the mothers’ attitude of acceptance and their sons’ emotional intelligence exists. Participants from conjugal families rated their mothers’ attitudes of acceptance/rejection, demands, and lack of consistency, as well as their fathers’ attitudes of acceptance/ rejection, autonomy, and lack of consistency more favorably than did participants from non-conjugal families. The relationship between parenting attitudes and children’s emotional intelligence can be determined by the type of the family of origin.

Opis:
Aggression between siblings is one of the most common – and the most downplayed – forms of aggression in the family. It is seen as natural and harmless. In fact, research has shown that such aggression leaves lasting scars in the child’s mind and affects functioning in adult life. Objective: investigate correlations between the perceived quality of the family environment, the experience of aggression in the family, including aggression between siblings, and the level of aggression in adult life. Method: 201 respondents – 167 women and 34 men, aged 19–36 years – took part in the study. To measure the variables under analysis, the respondents were asked to complete a questionnaire designed for this study, which included questions about aggression and violence between parents, parental aggression towards children, and the use of punishment in parenting; the Family Assessment Scale (FACES-IV) by David H. Olson, adapted by Andrzej Margasiński (2009, 2015); and the Aggression Questionnaire by Buss and Perry (1992), adapted by Aranowska, Rytel and Szmar (2005). Results: experience of domestic violence was shown to be related to the assessment of family functioning along four dimensions: cohesion, flexibility, communication and satisfaction. The data also showed that aggression was engendered by models of aggression, that is, by observing aggression between parents and by experiencing parental (especially paternal) violence. Unexpectedly, punishment turned out to be significantly correlated with all dimensions of family assessment – it was positively correlated with each of the manifestations of aggression under analysis. It was also demonstrated that while certain types of punishment were associated with specific manifestations of aggression (e.g. physical punishment with physical aggression, reprimands with verbal aggression, etc.), one type of punishment – screaming/threats/ insults – was significantly correlated with each of the analysed dimensions of aggression and was the only one associated with the tendency to react with aggression in relations with siblings.

Opis:
Cel. Analiza wpływu typu przywiązania w okresie niemowlęcym oraz stresu rodzicielskiego na problemy emocjonalne i zaburzenia zachowania u małych dzieci. Plan badania. Badana próba obejmowała 606 diad niemowlę–matka, które wzięły udział w populacyjnym badaniu kohortowym, przeprowadzonym w Holandii. Przywiązanie (więź dziecko–matka) oceniano przy użyciu procedury sytuacji obcej (Strange Situation), gdy dzieci miały 14 miesięcy. Kiedy dzieci osiągnęły wiek 18 miesięcy, zmierzono poziom stresu rodzicielskiego przy użyciu holenderskiej wersji Skali stresu rodzicielskiego (Parenting Stress Index). Wreszcie, gdy dzieci miały 3 lata, ich matki i ojcowie wypełniali Listę zachowań dziecięcych (Child Behavior Checklist). Wyniki. Ponadto wyższy poziom stresu rodzicielskiego wiązał się z większą liczbą problematycznych zachowań wycofanych u dzieci z pozabezpiecznym stylem przywiązania, zwłaszcza tych z ambiwalentnym stylem i przywiązaniem zdezorganizowanym. Wnioski.
Objective. To examine the role of infant attachment classification and parenting stress for toddler emotional and behavior problems. Design. Participants were 606 infant– mother dyads who took part in a population-based cohort study in the Netherlands. Infant–mother attachment classification was assessed using the Strange Situation Procedure when the children were 14 months old. At 18 months, parenting stress was measured with the Dutch version of the Parenting Stress Index. When the children were 3 years old, both mothers and fathers completed the Child Behavior Checklist. Results. Infant attachment moderated the effect of parenting stress on child emotional and behavior problems. Parenting stress was related to more aggression and attention problem behaviors in insecurely attached children, but not in securely attached children. Moreover, higher parenting stress was associated with more withdrawal problem behaviors in insecurely attached children, in particular in insecure-resistant and in disorganized children. Conclusion. In the presence of an insecure attachment relationship, more parenting stress is related to more (internalizing) withdrawal problem behavior and to more (externalizing) aggression and attention problems. Attachment security in infancy buffers the influence of parenting stress on child emotional and behavior problems.
