    Opis:
    The aim of this paper is to explore older in-migrants' experiences and perceptions of their spatial context at the neighbourhood level, the key aspects in their attachment to the neighbourhood, and the role of place in their experience of ageing. Our qualitative research was carried out in Newton Hall (United Kingdom). The findings show that older people can have a proactive role in terms of placemaking and their own wellbeing. However, the study also reveals that the condition of the spatial context can either support or hinder older people's sense of wellbeing.

    Opis:
    This article is inspired by an EU-founded project on intergenerational mentoring: ‘HEAR ME’, which was conducted from 2009–2011 in five European countries. Starting from the demographic challenges that affect all European welfare states, the authors discuss attitudes to and possibilities in involvement of older people in voluntary social work as mentors for young people. The challenge of the ageing societies is quite often discussed as the ‘burden of the elderly’ and discussed as an economic problem. However, the challenge is not only economical. It is also a social and cultural challenge, among other things because a unilateral focus on the economic aspects may cause dissolution of the social cohesion and decrease in well-being for far too many people. The HEAR ME project aimed at developing strategies for lifelong learning and new roles for older people based on their competences, network and an assumed desire of generativity. Action learning seems to be an appropriate learning concept in relation to keeping older people engaged in the community. The authors thus point at participating and lifelong learning as part of the answers to the demographic challenges, and they suggest what you might call a pedagogical turn in social work and social policy.The challenge of the ageing societies is quite often discussed as the ‘burden of the elderly’ and discussed as an economic problem.     Celem artykułu jest konfrontacja celów i metod podejmowanych działań w ramach krajowych „obchodów” Europejskiego Roku Aktywności Osób Starszych i Solidarności Międzypokoleniowej 2012 z celami Roku Europejskiego 2012 oraz Europejskiej Strategii Zatrudnienia w świetle celów priorytetowych strategii Europa 2020. Istotą działań jest wykorzystanie otwartej metody koordynacji opartej na dialogu między Komisją Europejską, rządami krajowymi, związkami zawodowymi, przedstawicielami pracodawców i innymi instytucjami europejskimi, jak np. Europejski Komitet Ekonomiczno-Społeczny. Postawiono pytania – w jakim stopniu działania przewidziane w Krajowym Planie Działania na rzecz Europejskiego Roku Aktywności Osób Starszych i Solidarności Międzypokoleniowej 2012 w Polsce mogą wpłynąć na poprawę wartości wskaźników monitorujących realizację celów. Krytycznie omówiono główne działania wskazując na słabość dialogu społecznego w Polsce, który w formie scentralizowanej nie przystaje do realiów. W efekcie to strona rządowa zmajoryzowała działania, marginalizując zbiorowy głos związków zawodowych w sprawach istotnych dla wydłużenia wieku emerytalnego. Są przykłady jak np. w Norwegii, gdzie dialog dwustronny partnerów społecznych jest kluczowym gwarantem powodzenia przekładającego się na wysoką aktywizacją zawodową osób starszych. Pracodawcy wykazują natomiast skłonność do podejmowania strategii przystosowywania się do warunków globalnego starzenia się społeczeństw.
    This article compares the aims and the methodology of activities connected with the national „celebration” of the European Year of Active Aging and Solidarity between Generations 2012 with the aims of the European Year 2012 and of the European Employment Strategy in the context of the priorities of the Europe 2020 strategy. The activities emphasise the use of the open method of coordination that involves a dialogue between the European Commission, national governments, trade unions, employers’ organisations and other European institutions, such as the European Economic and Social Committee. The article raises questions about the degree to which the activities related to the Polish National Action Plan for the European Year of Active Aging and Solidarity between Generations 2012 are capable of improving the values of the indicators used to monitor the fulfilment of the goals. The article critically evaluates the main activities, pointing to the weaknesses of social dialogue in Poland that falls short of the realities because of its centralisation. The centralised approach has caused that the government side is the major player in the dialogue that marginalises the collective voice of trade unions on issues important for the planned extension of the retirement age. In some countries, such as Norway, the bilateral dialogue between social partners is central to high employment activity of older people. As far as employers are concerned, they tend to develop adaptation strategies to the general aging of societies.
