The centenary of regaining independence by Poland arouses complex reflections. It leads to summaries but also arouses interest in the processes accompanying these events. The manuscript of Bogdan Suchodolski’s handwriting is an interesting document from this period. There is a reflection about the moral consequences of the First World War and questions about the future of the post-war world. A clear inspiration of Schopenhauer’s pessimism can be noticed there, which makes it an exceptional document in his work and at the same time casts an interesting light on his other achievements.

In 1933 geopolitical situation in Europe had been changed. The leaders of four countries: Great Britain, France, Italy and Germany tried to make some agreement of ruling on the continent. For such countries like Poland and Czechoslovakia this agreement could be very dangerous. Both of them had a very difficult mutual relations. But potential threat could bring them closer. In a spirit of those thinking, polish military attache lt. Col. Andrzej Czerwiński had prepared a short report of political and military situation in Czechoslovakia, especially in the face of German’s pressures. He was writing about possibility of closing between two countries, chances of development of military forces and mutual cooperation.

The dispute over the Constitutional Tribunal is primarily of a personal nature and concerns two issues: 1) the legality of choosing three people for the position of judge of the Constitutional Tribunal: Mariusz Muszyński, Jaroslaw Wyrembak and Justyn Piskorski; 2) the legality of the appointment of the judge of the Tribunal Julia Przyłębska to the post of the President of the Constitutional Tribunal. This article consists of a descriptive part summarizing the basic facts and arguments brought up by both parties to the dispute in the legal discussion, and a prognosis presenting four alternative scenarios for ending the dispute over the Constitutional Tribunal in 2019–2024 or later.

The article presents graduates of the Royal University of Warsaw, which existed between 1816 and 1831, (closed as a result of the November Uprising downfall) and alumni of the Main School in Warsaw, functioning in 1862–1869, that is till the failed January Uprising, after which the school was transformed into the Russian Imperial University of Warsaw. The total number of graduates of the above-mentioned schools amounted to 57. What is more, there were 29 graduates of the Royal University of Warsaw and they began to work in schools in the period between the uprisings, whereas 27 graduates of the Main School in Warsaw only took jobs in teaching in secondary schools in the Kingdom of Poland after the education system reform of Aleksander Wielopolski. The article presents fields of studies of those teachers, their religious beliefs and social background, work experience as well as examples of their active involvement in social, political and cultural life of the Kingdom of Poland.

The Catholic Social School of Poznań was one of the leading Polish didactic centers for social services in the interwar period. In the years 1927–1939 it conducted courses for and educated the staff of care and social institutions, especially those related to the Catholic Church. The priority of the school’s activity was to organize, since the establishment of the institution in 1927, a two-year social work training course, later functioning under the name of the Higher Catholic Social College. In June 1937, the school obtained the state rights of the university and the name of the Higher Catholic Social College. The purpose of the article is to show selected aspects of the institution’s functioning, related to its establishment and educational and education activities until 1939. For this purpose, the preserved source materials in the form of archives, articles published in the magazines of the Second Republic of Poland were analyzed, and few studies developed after 1945 were referred to.

The author of this essay puts forward the thesis that civic patriotism should be associated with action for the benefit of the community – regardless of nationality, race, class origin, political convictions or sexual orientation of its citizens – rather than with top-down celebrations of subsequent historical anniversaries. At the same time, the author argues that educational narratives about patriotism cannot escape political discourse. Education, like culture, cannot exist as an enclave, a neutral space beyond the power relations. Such thinking requires – according to the author – a change in the pedagogical perspective into a performative one and a change in the way of writing about culture and education going beyond the positivist and post-positivist framework. The author refers to the reflection of Norman K. Denzin and Yvonne S. Lincoln, and asserts that there is a need for educators who are close to the figure of a political bricoleur realising that there is no science free of value and at the same time seeking civic social science, whose basis is the “policy of hope”.

The article describes the youth and adolescence of Adam Schaff in the years 1913–1939. Taking into account the context of Polish-Jewish relations during the former Austrian Partition, the author presents Schaff’s growing up in the interwar Lviv and his gradual involvement in the communist movement, which led him to become a member of the youth wing of the Communist Party of Poland and the party itself, and his several-month imprisonment in 1937. In addition to the factual reconstruction of the Polish philosopher’s life, the article aims to answer the question: what were the main motives that made Adam Schaff a communist? This question can be considered in at least two ways – as an individual choice of Schaff himself, but also as a case study of the entire generation of Polish-Jewish communists described, for example, by Jaff Schatz.

The aim of the article is to attempt to present the role of a teacher in the process of moral education in the opinion of the authors publishing in the teachers’ journal “Pedagogical Review” based on the analysis of its issues from the years 1918–1939. Moral education in the interwar period was a subject of interest in pedagogical circles both in Poland and abroad. This was related to the popularity of the slogans of the New Education as well as the moral revival sought after the First World War. The authors publishing in the “Pedagogical Review” believed that, next to the parents, it is the teachers who should play the most important role in the process of moral education of children. Their personal example, the use of a wide range of educational methods and influence in various educational areas were the most important factors shaping the educational environment for the moral education of the young generation of Poles.

The article is aimed at introducing the brief recapitulation of the history of Polish Rus’. This history begins from Mieszko I of Poland (Red Ruthenia or Red Rus’ – that was as a matter of fact the residence of the Polish tribes). Gradually the Polish dominion (The Crown of the Kingdom of Poland) was stretched out on the Principality of Galicia-Volhynia (during the reign of Casimir the Great), and after the Union of Lublin – on the Volhynia and the rest of territories that nowadays belong to Ukraine. During the second Rzeczpospolita (The second Commonwealth of Poland) Polish Rus’ encompassed the Volhynia and the Principality of Galicia-Volhynia (Galicia – Eastern Małopolska, e.g. Lesser Poland). After 1945 the Polish Rus’ got separated from Poland (except Red Ruthenia or Red Rus’).

The article presents the results of the systematic analysis of the resolutions of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland (10th–8th terms of office) as a mechanism aimed at shaping the collective memory of the Polish society. It outlines a research field and characterizes a legislative mechanism. Further, the article discusses research techniques and methods, and presents partial research results. The author shows that commemorative resolutions are an important element of the state politics of memory and lead to the emergence of various commemorative initiatives. On the other hand, their significance is moderated by the state of collective memory and the dominant topoi and public discourse strategies. Most often the resolutions using the so-called “constructive strategies” do not seek to radically reformulate the state of social historical consciousness. They disregard inconvenient persons and events and foster petrification of social imagination and marginalization of the minority communities of memory.

The article discusses children’s fears and imaginings of an atomic bomb and a nuclear threat emerging in the memories of the Poles born in the second half of the 1960s and the 1970s. The sources used are ethnographic interviews conducted by the author of the study, Internet materials and memoirs. The author touches on the issue of transformations of the propaganda narratives concerning the nuclear threat in the subsequent periods of the People’s Republic of Poland, and the stages of the Cold War at the same time. Further, the article discusses the memories of this propaganda from the second half of the 1970s and the 1980s, the influence of family accounts and media reports, as well as concrete views on atomic weapons, the arms race and the disarmament process.

The article presents a historical vision of the Polish patriotism. The interwar system of employing professors at academic schools was based on a limited number of professorial chairs created by the state authorities. The aim of this study is to examine the system itself and its functioning with relation to pedagogy chairs. They were divided into associate chairs (where associate professors were employed) and, more prestigious, full chairs for full professors. The main rules for their employment were formulated in the laws on academic schools. The number of pedagogy chairs created by the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Public Education was very small. This concerned other disciplines as well. Due to the limited number of chairs, the manner of election raised a lot of controversy. The following factors influenced the decision to entrust a chair to a particular professor: opinions collected from professors about the most suitable candidates, academic achievements, possession of habilitation, and often the influence of well-known professors who promoted their own co-workers.

The goal of the article is to present the scope of interventions by the Regional Offices for the Control of Publications and Performances in the Catholic press during the decline of the People’s Republic of Poland (PRL) and the first months of the Republic of Poland, i.e. between January 1989 and April 1990. Initial censorship was a period which preceded the Round Table talks while final censorship ended with the abolition of censorship, i.e. the passing of the act (11 April 1990) on the liquidation of the institutions for the control of publications and performances. The source material for the article were the files of the Main Office of Control of Press, Publications and Shows stored in the Archives of New Records.

Editor in Chief of “The Pedagogical Quarterly” discourses with Irena Wojnar, employed at the University of Warsaw since early post-war time. Her intellectual evolution (l’âge où l’on grandit) occurs in changing dramatic periods of our history, optimism of elementary school before the World War II, painful time of clandestine education during the Nazi occupation in Warsaw, hopes and illusions of the post-war epoch. In these periods, the essential inspirations for Irena Wojnar were successive books of Bogdan Suchodolski, with symbolic titles: Love life – be valiant (2nd ed. 1930), Whence and where are we going to? (1943) and Education for the future (1947). In the Polish school before the WWII, pupils were educated in the spirit of patriotism and civic duties, sensibility to the surrounding world and the service of humans. Tragic heroism of the WWII became the proof of those values. In the conditions of constant aggressive and permanent threat, quasi “against the night”, the fight with the occupant becomes the essential moral duty. For young people, pupils and students, when secondary and tertiary schools were closed by the Nazis, this duty signified participation in clandestine education supporting hope to preserve future order in the world and preparation of the future activity in the free Poland after the WWII. The end of the WWII created a chance for the future shape of the world in line with our humanistic values. It was the period of the reconstruction of Warsaw, destroyed during the WWII, becoming a city of “sorrow and dreams”. In the final part of the conversation there appears the general opinion that every individual life–story, beyond its individual aspects, reveals a more general educational idea. Human life runs across destiny and personal consciousness. Independently of our destiny, we have a chance to choose values important for us, to realise the “poetics of the self” (poétique du soi) based on our capacity to overcome own limitations and to increase goodness in the world.
