Opis:
The article explores the dynamics of the formation of the image of Belorussia on the German mental map with a consideration of the German occupation policies during the First and Second World Wars. The author suggests that in 1915–18 the Germans tried to “invent” Belorussia in order to overcome the lack of knowledge about this region and, on the other hand strove to gain this “new land” and its population to ensure their own superiority in the East. It seems that the Kaiserreich was indeed tolerant to the profound cultural differences and sought to make use of the local regionalism in geopolitical sense. On the contrary, in the Nazi Germany the cultural differences were initially rejected in favor of the “master race”. In this respect, Belarusians were considered only as a mean to support of the forthcoming colonization. In the author’s opinion, there is much less continuity between the German war policies in the East in 1915−18 and 1941−44 than is generally accepted.

Opis:
The author is searching for the spots or cracks through which concealed trauma reveals itself in The World by Miłosz, a text which most of the interpreters described as idyllic. Close reading of Miłosz’s text shows that it is driven by unconscious repression that works to conceal the symptoms of traumatic experience by covering them with a simulation of a house¬ sanctuary. Author is trying to re¬ read The World, paying close attention to these spots and the fact that the date closing the book – April 1943 – is not just an ironic point, but a mark of experience that could not be erased or repressed from memory. The author also points to the intertextual relation between The World and other Miłosz’s texts, and shows how by comparing different types of poetic imagery related to the same memory, one can depict the work of unconscious repression.

The subject of this study is the activity of the Belarusians in the General Government in 1940–1945. Belarusians were the fifth largest ethnic group in the GG. The German occupation authorities, applying the principle of “divide and conquer”, were ready to give Belarusians some freedom in the sphere of culture, religion and economy. In 1940, the Belarusian Committee was established in Warsaw, with branches in Biała Podlaska and Kraków. The majority of committee members were Belarusians and Poles – prisoners of war and refugees from the Soviet occupation zone of Poland. As a priority of this organization, cultural, educational and religious activities among the Belarusians in the General Government were recognized. The activists of the committee managed to create a school in Warsaw and two parishes (Orthodox and Catholic). Belarusian activities faced some difficulties. Serious problems for the Belarusians Committee caused the activities of Ukrainian organizations in the GG. One of the episodes in the history of the Belarusian Committee is the cooperation of its activists with German military intelligence.

The so-called Danish secrets to happiness have been brought into vogue in Poland as well as other countries worldwide. The author tries to show that the reach of this concept is much broader than – the area of trendy lifestyles or competition from Nordic neighbourhood, for instance Swedish idea “lagom”. Namely, patriotism and its cultural practises in the everyday life lie at the root of all Danish inclination for comfort and cosiness.

Opis:
From an existential and metaphysical standpoint, the African world is dualised into the physical and metaphysical world. This is bald-faced in the dynamics of the relationship that characterizes the African worldview. In praxis, the metaphysical world is seen to be higher in the scheme of things because, it is from it that the impersonal beings/forces operate and superintend on the physical world of man. It is based on this that the twin issue of destiny and freedom is topical and recurrent in Igbo-African metaphysics. The concern is whether man can be free in the physical world, which seems to be a manifestation of the will/wishes and/or the whims and caprices of the beings/forces in the metaphysical world. It is consequent upon this that this paper undertook an existential analysis of these contending issues of freedom and destiny within the Igbo-African context. From the analysis, it was palpable that, though there can be manipulations from the metaphysical world which can bring about luck (good or ill), the Igbo-African is expected to make effort to excel and work responsibly with his chi; because, a man can have a good or bad luck but his/her practical effort is still expedient.

The First World War was analyzed and described in their diaries mainly by politicians, various rank soldiers, medical officers and male nurses, writers, news correspondents, civilians who were watching closely the war theatre, as well as theology students and military chaplains. We are however interested in testimonies of clergymen who became priests of the Katowice diocese after the end of 1914–1918 war campaign. They succeeded to live „in memory” because of tracks of their presence in the war in archive records or remaining press publications. The following individuals in this circle deserve special attention: Teofil Aleksander Bromboszcz, Józef Feliks Gawlina and Karol Milik. There were 85 military chaplains involved in the First World War on the Prussian side from the area of the Wrocław diocese and 24 military chaplains from area of the General Wicarage in Cieszyn. In total there were 63 future priests of the Katowice diocese among them. Among soldiers chaplains could feel at home. Soldiers appreciated their high moral values and good manners.

John Bloch (1839–1902) was a railroad tycoon, banker, social activist, philanthropist and man of science. He was shortlisted for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1902 for his multi-volume work entitled The Future of War in its Technical, Economic and Political Relations, which was dubbed ‘the bible of pacifism.’ Thanks to his multilayered activities he perfectly fits the positivist ideals of his time. Despite this, due to the course of history and ‘unfavourable circumstances’ for featuring his figure, for decades he was largely forgotten. The goal of this article is to present Jon Bloch and his works in the fields of entrepreneurship, science and most of all his attempts in aid of peace. I will present his major pacifist hypotheses and arguments which are included in his work The Future of War. The author substituted the usual religious and humanitarian arguments in aid of peace, with economic assertions. Published in many languages, the book became essential reading for the intellectuals and politicians at the break of 20th c., while Bloch gained the nickname of ‘the father of contemporary pacifism.’ In order to verify the legitimacy of this claim I will contrast Bloch’s work to a work entitled The Great Illusion, by Norman Angell. Published in 1909, eleven years after the first publication of The Future of War, Angell’s The Great Illusion is wellknown to the Anglo-Saxon readership.

Heidegger's analysis of modern science and especially Descartes' philosophy drawn in 1930s represents a significant shift contrary to the theoretical research in his work called Being and Time. While the main problem in the most significant Heidegger's work is the analysis of res extensa in Descartes' philosophy, later in Modern Mathematical Natural Science and in Age of the World Picture the main problem turns to be a picture of Descartes as a methodologist. By this theoretical research Heidegger tends to lead us to the knowledge that only by deep immersion into the problems of The principle of Reason we can gain the knowledge or the intuition of what happens in modern science. Here we also can reach the turning-point of the history of human thinking - the unity of modern science and modern philosophy. Heidegger's analysis of the famous Descartes' quote cogito ergo sum leads to the conclusion that sum is not a result of thinking but vice versa it is a fundament, fundamentum. According to him this sentence includes the fact that it is I who put. I am the one who puts and thinks. This sentense is special because what it talks about - subiectum - is the one who puts. According to Heidegger the utterance expresses not only the fact that I, the one who puts, am but also that my putting decides about the reality of everyone putting, which means of his/her Being as being.

The discussion of Austria’s Hallstatt-Dachstein / Salzkammergut World Heritage region involves vertical and horizontal dimensions of governance, including politics, administration, private businesses and civil society.

Polish and Ukrainian poetry on World War I have much in common: they were written mainly by soldier-poets, young men fighting in the Polish Legions or the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen. This poetry is, first of all, a patriotic legitimation of the war as a way of regaining political independence. Heroism and suffering for the fatherland are dominating issues. Nevertheless, besides this pathetic gesture, we can find voices that point out the horror of war and question it at all. Such criticisms is expressed by certain motives, which appear in both the Legions’ and the Sich Riflemens’ poetry, like: fratricide, lists from soldiers to their families at home, devastation of nature and culture, autumn and death, as well as pacifist notions. These voices do not form any dominant discourse in the poetry on World War I, but they are not to be ignored, as they mark a common place in the Polish and Ukrainian literature at this time, which has not been researched until now.

The aim of the article is to present a phenomenon of the sexualization of an atomic bomb in the popular culture of the 1940s and the 1950s in the United States. On the basis of sociological and cultural studies, the author lists the functions of this phenomenon. Furthermore, he uses the examples of press reports and popular cinema to indicate that the sexualization of the atomic bomb resulted from fear of sterilization and assimilation of soldiers coming back from the front. The analysis concerns the film I Married a Monster from Outer Space (1958). The author proves that science fiction films conceptualize social concerns, and accustom the viewers with atomic tension by means of appropriate narratives.
