Opis:
Television Theatre is a specific genre that is a characteristic unique to Polish media. It began with the creation of TV. In the beginning it aimed only at transferring traditional theatrical shows into a new medium. It became very popular with live transmissions of theatrical shows from TV studios. Later it adopted new technical and staging possibilities. It has evolved over the years, creating different styles and tendencies, due to the development of television itself and the achievements of the theoreticians as well as people involved in theatrical productions. Lately it has also turned to the Internet and because of that a mass audience has gained access to a high art form.

Opis:
Musical theatre in Poland entered a new stage in its history after 1989. Being forced to exist in a new economical situation, it had to develop a new organization model, different from the one it was using for last 45 years. Managing directors of such theatres as Musical Thea-tre in Gdynia, Musical Theatre Roma in Warsaw or Musical Theatre in Wrocław reformed their institutions, introducing strategies present in the Western theatrical world, for example castings for performers, giving up permanent theatrical groups etc. In theatres in Gdynia, Warsaw and in Rozrywka Theatre in Chorzów many Polish premieres of worldwide known musicals took place. Artistic and technical quality of Musical Theatre Roma in Warsaw reached the levels of European theatres of that type. Theatre in Wrocław, that has changed its name into Musical Theatre Capitol, became the leading centre of sophisticated musical theatre. Wojciech Kościelniak, connected with theatres in Gdynia and Wrocław, has directed many new and original musicals, based usually on outstanding literary works. Kościelniak is one of the most interesting personalities of contemporary Polish musical theatre.

The article is a presentation of the Creative Tenants workshops, which are part of the contemporary activities in the field of theatre pedagogy. Children’s workshops took place for five months at the Służewski House of Culture in Warsaw. They were an attempt to verify contemporary assumptions of theatre pedagogy used in practice. The inspiration for the project was the idea of art education and its rich tradition as well as modern concepts of treating art as a space for designing new ways of social action.

Opis:
The article concerns contemporary Polish theatre, and particularly the creativity of young directors who are in their thirties: Monika Pęcikiewicz, Monika Strzępka and Wiktor Rubin who give up the traditional theatre and mingle with mass and popular culture. The article also focuses on the problem of reception, because theatrical performances, distancing themselves from the traditional ones, still cause emotional reactions of conservative specta-tors who often feel shocked and offended by such theatre. Such performances ignore the hegemony of dramatical text – they deconstruct cause and effect order of narration, con-front text with contemporary context, they are incoherent; they use new media to contact with a spectator by acting that is based on quoting a character and constant balancing be-tween theatrical performance and private life.

Opis:
Adaptation of different literary texts is one of the important practices in Polish contempo-rary theatre after 1989. Adaptations are being undertaken by the creators of the authorial theatres, directors of the repertory theatres and young artists who began their professional career in the theatre in the late nineties and after a year 2000. The article discusses three different types of adaptory practices. Krystian Lupa's adaptations are a kind of creative dialogue with literature that becomes a base for individual and evolving esthetics of his own theatre. Krzysztof Warlikowski struggles with the tradition and exceeds it. Directors repre-senting critical theatre use classical dramatical and epic texts to build a dialectical discourse with Polish “ready¬ made world”.

Ever since antiquities, theatre has been a medium of provoking sentimental reaction and an entertainment of the populace especially the elite. Authors of this genre do present active noble characters in their works making as if it is real. We do learn in Greco-Roman Empire how amphitheatre hosted Caesars, their officials and empiric subjects watching the gladiators and the persecuted Christians in the medieval era. Fifty years of cinema and the television as well as the new media have changed the mind-set of the global community towards life in general to form a unique interconnected universal cultural chains. In this research, we would like to use political activism theories called pluralist theories of Norris Pippa as critical lens to analyse the trend of political activism in the modern theatre of the early 21st century in comparison to that of the 20th century which led to violent revolutionary movements.

The article discusses the problem of the actor’s interpretation (resp. working on the role) from the perspective of anthropological semiotics. In this context, an actor’s part is treated as a social construct of the specific referential chain. The exemplification materials are three actor’s interpretations of the figure of Wojnicki from dramatic play Uncle Vanya by Atnon Chekhov (Zamachowski, Hudziak, Gancarczyk) staged between 1993 and 1994 in the following theatres: Teatr Studio in Warsaw (1993), Teatr Stary in Kraków (1993) and Teatr TV (1994).

Opis:
The main goal of the article is to offer a description of cryptotexts of theatre staging handbooks and dramatic works created in Poland during the socialist realism period. A cryptotext is a secret text which is the result of a purposeful act of subterfuge. In the article, I present selected cryptotexts – reviews produced in the Ministry of Culture and Art (MKiS) and censorship reviews of the dramatic works submitted for evaluation to the Voivodship Control Bureau for Press, Main Office of Control of Press, Publications and Shows (WUKPPiW). The archives contain evaluation of works which have been published in subsequent years as well as those which remained only in their draft form. Analysis of the evaluations of ministry officials reveal the mechanisms for allowing and withholding submitted dramatic works and a theatre staging handbook which shows the practices of publishing theatrical works. An analysis of different evaluations of the same text allows for a hypothesis that the main aim of cryptotexts was the evaluation of ideological correctness of submitted works. Despite this main function it is possible to point out specific passages in the statements by the WUKPPiW officials which are similar to statements of Ministry officials. In both cases the evaluation pertains to the content and the planned fulfilment of the work and plays mainly a didactic function.

Opis:
This essay presents a sociosemiotic analysis of My Children! My Africa! (1989) by Athol Fugard. By considering the characters’ views about self, community, education, and time, it points to the Fugard’s anxious attempt to offer liberalism as the solution to apartheid in South Africa instead of oppositional politics, especially blacks’ calls for activism and communalism. Sociosemiotics is suitable to plays overtly political; it holds that political writers are troubled by political changes that do not correspond to a firmly held ideology—a tension between what a playwright believes is absolute and what s/he senses and perhaps fears is happening. Keys to the analysis are contemporary texts, including essays from leading Black writers and journalists and from studies and essays from attendees of a 1986 conference on liberal solutions to the unrest in South Africa.
