Opis:
In this article I attempt to create and discuss the main connections between politics and teaching. I distinguish four such entanglement: the parties, post-political, critical, and political/post-political. I point out that the studying as the immanent political force is the characteristics of the political/post-political entanglement, while other entanglements are connected with the instrumental relation and with the subjugation of what is educational to what is external.

The main object of the analysis was to answer whether contemporary Poland faces a crisis of authority. The notion is considered in two dimensions: authority of power and power of authority. It needs to be determined whether we are experiencing a deep reformulation of the very idea of authority, its meaning and function. Another key issue analyzed was whether role models are still needed and if Poles still need them in a democratic system. On the basis of available research it is possible to conclude that in fact role models are still of importance or even much desired in times of crisis. It is also worth mentioning that the authority of truth and role models of science and its practitioners are particularly worth preserving. The correlation between the level of education and the level of trust, willingness to cooperate and the need for authority is present in numerous studies. The conclusion appears to be obvious: if there is an area, in which the need for revival of authority and the master-apprentice relation is particularly dire, that area would be the authority of truth, knowledge and education.

The article presents the results of a research project on the perception of women in politics and the role of beauty as a factor determining how female politicians are evaluated. It was inspired by Naomi Wolf’s The Beauty Myth. The object of analysis were Internet comments written in response to articles describing the activities of selected women. Almost thirty years after the publication of the above-mentioned book, it appears that women are still being judged on the basis of their appearance and not their competence.

Chicana literary work is predominantly characterized by poetry. Lyrical poetic phrases are interwoven into Chicanas’ short stories, novels, theoretical, and critical essays. Why poetry? What is distinct about poetry as a literary genre or the process of writing poetry that facilitates Chicanas’ self-expression? Various Chicana writers refer to the process of writing poetry as essential to the (trans)formation of identity and society. Poetry allows Chicanas to transform their own identities and to re-define the contours of the world by creating a new or distinct reality from which to act. Collectively, Chicana writers produce a corpus of literary work that is characterized by the commingling of poetry, theory, and criticism. In this article I illustrate that these three phenomena are inextricably linked and that theoretical and critical essays written by and about Chicanas often grow out of and through their more creative, poetic literary work. My analysis focuses primarily on two Chicana authors, Pat Mora and Ana Castillo, and examines how their poetry exemplifies and contextualizes some of their abstract claims and critical theories, as well as how the blending of poetry, theory, and criticism functions as a powerful tool to create socio-political change both in the academy and beyond.

The article presents the silhouette and artistic achievements of Jan Klata, one of the most famous Polish theatrical artists. Social and political context, concerning the process of sud-den acceleration in every field of social life, creates the background for describing creativity of this ‘rebel with Mohawk hairstyle’. The director whose works belong to so¬ called ‘socially engaged theatre’ highlights the untypical ideas by using language inspired by the elements of the reality around (popular, musical and media culture). He remains a defiant, rebellious artist who fights for Poland and the high quality theatre addressed to critical spectator.

The article analyzes the functioning of the PiS – LPR – Samoobrona coalition (Law and Justice – League of Polish Families – Self-Defence of the Republic of Poland coalition). The analysis was limited to just two of those political parties – LPR and PiS. The articles found in a daily “Rzeczpospolita” constitute the main source of data. An attempt at answering the question of why such a formation could not and did not survive, leading to premature dissolution of government is the key notion of the paper. The authors tried to present the environment of conflict and agreement between two right-wing parties – PiS and LPR.

The article is discussing both challenges and problems that emerge from an intensified cross-border integration, particularly in Europe, which is creating a sort of ‘cross-border regionalism’ that might be sought as a new constituent part of a complex, multi-level system of governance incorporating not only national, but also local/regional agents. Cross-border regionalism is thus not only a system of government, but also a system of ‘grass-rooted’ social and spatial (re)integration of borderlands. This process is closely related to the question of changing territoriality, preserving on the one hand the regional control and on the other hand re-acting societal and territorial co-dependence.

The main object of analyses found in the paper are ideological concepts of Prawo i Sprawiedliwość (Law and Justice) with particular emphasis on the description and explanation of “the political” in accordance with political beliefs of the party. PiS is a political party which based their ideology-creation function on two political criteria: projection of means in order to reshape the reality according to their own political thought and differentiating between national and international opponents and allies. The two criteria mentioned have their roots in four assumptions. First, political goals may be realized only as long-term commitments. Second, each political entity strives for securing their access to new resources strengthening their potential. Third, political thinking has been strongly determined by geopolitics. Fourth, the division into allies and opponents cannot be reduced to rivalry of other kinds, e.g. economic or social.

The text is a discussion of the UMCS publicationPolskość i europejskość w Josepha Conrada wizjach historii, polityki i etyki[Polishness and Europeanism in Joseph Conrad's vision of history, politics and ethics] edited by Wieslaw Krajka. This is the second volume in the series Joseph Conrad a Polska, Europa Środkowo-Wschodnia i świat [Joseph Conrad and Poland, Central and Eastern Europe and the world], is part of the research activities carried out by the Conrad Research Department at the UMCS. The monograph, like its predecessor, is a selection of texts previously published in English in the 22 volumes of the series Conrad: Eastern and Western Perspectives. The review highlights the qualities of the publication, which presents works by leading Polish and foreign Conrad experts. In addition to popularizing the author, it also is an attempt to recover Conrad, who is almost absent in the Polish education.
Tekst jest omówieniem publikacji Wydawnictwa UMCS Polskość i europejskość w Josepha Conrada wizjach historii, polityki i etyki pod redakcją Wiesława Krajki. Jest to drugi tom serii Joseph Conrad a Polska, Europa Środkowo-Wschodnia i świat, stanowi część działań naukowych prowadzonych przez Zakład Badań Conradoznawczych UMCS. Monografia, podobnie jak poprzedniczka, jest wyborem tekstów opublikowanych wcześniej w języku angielskim w 22 tomach serii Conrad: Eastern and Western Perspectives. Recenzja zwraca uwagę na walory tego wydawnictwa, które zawiera badania czołowych polskich i zagranicznych conradystów. Prócz tego pełni funkcję popularyzatorską, jest swoistym odzyskiwaniem Conrada, autora niemal nieobecnego w polskiej edukacji.

A main goal of this essay is the analysis of the contemporary phase of evolution of European “organism” by using approaches from political science and neuroscience. The transdisciplinary perspective allows for better understanding of finer points of human behavior which can be lost only in political science analysis. My simple and obvious assumption is that politics is about people. Human beings create groups, communities, etc. If it is so, maybe we should start with looking more closely into mechanisms of the most important part of ourselves. The brain. It is responsible for all human behaviour. Another crucial point is the connection between humans and environment. The concept of co-evolution is fundamental and very useful when we want to show intertwining relations between interiority (brain, body) and externality (behaviour, social and political structures). Europe may be the very context for this analysis, but it is most of all our humanity.

This essay examines the appearance of distrust, disinterest and aversion to politics and political participation in today’s democracies by taking the Kantian concept of a republican state into account. The goal is to find out reasons for the lack of interest in politics by investigating certain aspects in today’s democracies that might be not in compliance with the Kantian understanding of republicanism. The essay will start with an examination of the republican state and why it is mostly referred to as being much as the parliamentary democracy we know today. Then, these results will be compared with modern democracies (USA, Switzerland and Germany) in order to find the underlying reasons for the lack of interest in politics and how it might be possible to overcome it.

This paper explores the historical challenge of social inclusion relying on the example of the Japanese social security system. The current public assistance system in Japan is grounded on the Public Assistance Act of 1951, which was originally constituted in 1946 and already declared equal treatment of all citizens. We will focus on a hidden aspect in this introductory period of the public assistance system, the actual situations of people who depend on it. We have digitally restored a survey data for households receiving public assistance. This data was collected in a Japanese prefecture in 1952. The results of this survey indicate that differences in poverty by gender are remarkable. For male householders, the total number of events that caused the onset of public assistance, principally injured or diseases, in 1950 or 1951 was more than that of 1944 or 1945. On the other hand, for female householders, the events of 1944 or 1945 were related to the Second World War, principally the death of male breadwinners, which induced poverty. Moreover, we broke down recipients by gender, age, and household types and revealed, in particular, two facts. First, many widows were receiving public assistance, but not all had lost their spouses in the war. Second, the largest age cluster of recipients was composed of children in the compulsory education age group. The increasing inclusion of the ‘standard’ type of household indicates the success of the Public Assistance Act’s universalism. This digitally restored sample has much potential to provide detailed descriptions of life courses and information on the jobs of household members.

The present text describes controversies connected with cult of Dorje Shugden, a deity of Tibetan Buddhism on the background of crisis of Tibetan diaspora in India. The author presents points of view of followers of Shugden and 14th Dalai Lama who banned the practice of the cult. It shows examples of intolerance and mutual attacks of Shugden’s followers and their enemies in India. The conflict is a symptom of the crisis of the Tibetan diaspora and of spirituality itself in times of domination of fundamentalists tendencies in religion and politics.

Mowa nienawiści i polityka tożsamości. Perspektywa komunikowania między kulturowego Mowa nienawiści na stałe wpisała się we współczesny dyskurs polityczny. Co więcej, doprowadziła do zmiany samej struktury komunikowania. Dzięki mediom społecznościowym, mowa nienawiści przedostała się do sfery publicznej, gdzie łączy użytkowników za pośrednictwem różnego rodzaju akcji społecznościowych, co z kolei pozwala jej na konstruowanie i dekonstruowanie tożsamości. W konsekwencji, mowa nienawiści podważa same fundamenty społeczeństwa wielokulturowego. Tymczasem, powodzenie takiego społeczeństwa zależy od jego zdolności do zaangażowania po-szczególnych jednostek do dialogu międzykulturowego. Z kolei mowa nienawiści wyrzuca poza nawias społeczeństwa wszystkie głosy sprzeciwu, pogłębiając tym samym polityczną polaryzację. Artykuł przedstawia zatem innowacyjną i szeroką analizę mowy nienawiści z perspektywy komunikowania międzykulturowego. Posiłkując się dostępnymi badaniami i literaturą przedmiotu, Autor stawia tezę, iż mowa nienawiści, jako komunikacyjny fenomen, nie tylko zakłóca dialog międzykulturowy, ale także prowadzi do dezintegracji społeczeństwa wielokulturowego.

This article discusses conditions of professional social work in public organizations, especially from the perspective of the Nordic countries. We propose that public arenas for social work consist of three domains with different functions and logics, yet interconnected and interdependent. These domains are the domain of politics, the domain of management and administration, and the domain of professional practice. The individual local organizations – made up of these domains with their respective logics – are in turn conditioned by a fourth domain, the domain of institutional conditions. This latter domain contains ideals of control, norms, and views of knowledge and technologies that exist in society, that are legitimized and disseminated by central institutions, and that govern important aspects of how the individual local organizations work. The purpose of this work is to contribute to the development of a domain theory for the organization of social work in the public sector.
