In 2015, the WHO Centre for Health Development established an international team of researchers to study cases of Community-Based Social Innovations that Support Older People in Low- and Middle-Income Countries. The key criterion for the selection of the analyzed projects was the direct involvement of institutional and non-institutional representatives of local communities in the implementation of projects whose main purpose was to support and activate older people. The conceptual and methodological assumptions did not refer to the idea of co-production. However, the conceptual apparatus used and the scope of the conducted exploration justify attempts to determine the potential for occurrence of the senior co-production within these initiatives. The “senior” character of the potential co-production was deliberately emphasized here, because in the presented analysis, the author focused mainly on the characteristics of activities undertaken by elderly people who each time constituted a group of basic beneficiaries (recipients) of organized services.

This paper examines the governance structures of Bulgarian agricultural co-operatives and the effective informal changes in the governance model. In this context, the focus is to study the innovations in the internal governance that either improve or deteriorate the governance structure. The agricultural co-operatives, as specific forms of doing business in agriculture, are part of the world economy. In the global world in which they are currently operating, market dynamics and growing competition have a significant impact on them: their visions, strategies, governance and governance structure are changing. The empirical data are the result of case studies and in-depth interviews conducted by 32 agricultural cooperatives in Bulgaria during the period 2013-2016. Qualitative research techniques are used. As a result of the reported deviations from the legal framework, the in-depth study highlighted the need for new informal assisting bodies of the governance structure in Bulgarian agricultural cooperatives - Members Council, informal interest groups, attracting external experts. The loss of trust from members to management leads to their leaving the cooperative and directing them to corporate structures.

Pathological gambling is one of the addictions that is widespread in our society, but despite its seriousness, it does not receive sufficient attention. The economic consequences of pathological gambling are comparable to other addictions, although in the overall context, their economic impact is much greater. The social consequences of pathological gambling are even greater than in case of other addictions, as pathological gamblers mostly have a family, and because of their dependence, their family often becomes dysfunctional, with all the related consequences. There exist several effective treatment approaches to treat pathological gambling, as in the case of substance dependencies. For an understanding of pathological behaviour in online games and digital games, it is also necessary to understand the development of related phenomenon – pathological gambling. The aim of this article is to briefly describe pathological gambling and co-dependence.

A main goal of this essay is the analysis of the contemporary phase of evolution of European “organism” by using approaches from political science and neuroscience. The transdisciplinary perspective allows for better understanding of finer points of human behavior which can be lost only in political science analysis. My simple and obvious assumption is that politics is about people. Human beings create groups, communities, etc. If it is so, maybe we should start with looking more closely into mechanisms of the most important part of ourselves. The brain. It is responsible for all human behaviour. Another crucial point is the connection between humans and environment. The concept of co-evolution is fundamental and very useful when we want to show intertwining relations between interiority (brain, body) and externality (behaviour, social and political structures). Europe may be the very context for this analysis, but it is most of all our humanity.

The McMaster Children and Youth University (MCYU) was founded with a vision to develop family-based educational engagement through community partnerships. The cornerstone of the program is the MCYU’s credo, Question Discover Create. Question your environment, Discover your potential and Create a brighter future. The MCYU has developed partnerships with community organizations, University organizations, parents and the youth to facilitate its two primary outreach efforts. The first arm of the program, the on-campus lecture series, has reached more than 6000 young people and their family members over the last 7 years. This component of the program allows attendees to engage with the University faculty through family friendly lectures and provides an opportunity to pose Questions. The MCYU also provides inquiry-based workshops in public schools, libraries and community centers which are facilitated by multidisciplinary teams of undergraduate and graduate students from the McMaster University. These workshops allow the youth to experience the feeling of Discovering new knowledge and Creating solutions. In the 2017–2018 academic year the MCYU workshops connected with 964 unique individuals through 101 workshops. Many of those young people attended several workshops demonstrating the MCYU’s success at sustainable educational engagement. Taken together, the MCYU’s mission is to foster more engaged citizenship in our youth.

During the late 19th century and early 20th century, co-education on a secondary school level was still a source of controversy, resulting in a public discussion. The first co-educational secondary schools in the Polish territories were established over the course of the First World War. During that time, in light of a realistic chance for Poland to regain independence, the teaching community undertook discussions regarding the shape of education in independent Poland. Still, many people still viewed co-education with a degree of doubt. In the interwar period, however, the number of public and private co-educational secondary schools increased. They were located primarily in smaller cities. Additionally, men usually represented the majority of students. This dynamic was a result of allowing women to attend institutions that had originally functioned as all-male schools, thus creating a coeducational schooling system. The level of education in these institutions was generally low.

Zagadnienie związków spółdzielczości z polityką społeczną jest słabo rozpoznane w polskiej literaturze. Spółdzielczośćdobrze rozwinięta ilościowo i w swoich funkcjach politykospołecznych w PRL jest jednocześnie mało autentyczna i autonomiczna. Transformacja przynosi kryzys takiego modelu, co sprawia, że w koncepcji trzeciego sektora umieszcza się głównie różnego rodzaju niegospodarcze i niespółdzielcze stowarzyszenia. Kariera pojęcia ekonomii społecznej i tezy o ekonomizacji czy komercjalizacji stowarzy-szeńsprawiają, że odradza się równieżretoryka prospółdzielcza czy okołospółdzielcza. Jednocześnie zmienia sięmyślenie o polityce społecznej, w kierunku jej postpaństwowej postopiekuńczej wersji. Razem daje to interesujące pole do analizy i badania rodzących się znaczeń i nowych kombinacji starych pojęć. Celem artykułu jest wstępna eksploracja tego terenu na podstawie przeglądu literatury zagranicznej i polskiej, w szczególności tej, w której jednocześnie mowa o polityce społecznej i spółdzielczości lub ogospodarce (ekonomii, przedsiębiorczości) społecznej oraz wzajemnych związkach między nimi. Tym samym niektóre idee w Polsce mało znane i dyskutowane mają szansę wejść w obieg akademicki izainspirowaćnowe programy badawcze.
Relationship between co-operatives and social policy is not well recognized in Polish literature. Co-operatives in communist Poland were well developed quantitatively and in its social functions, but less and less authentic and autonomic under the state planning system and in the shadow of state owned enterprises and their social functions. Transformation from communism to capitalism brought crisis to this model and because of that the third sector concept developed in early nineties in Poland but not yet co-operatives. Growing popularity of social economy concept and hypotheses about economization and commercialization of associational sector made it possible to rebirth pro co-operatives discourse. At the same time social policy in the welfare state model has been changing towards a post state and a post welfare versions. These two trends met together and have become a stimulus for theorizing and research on new meanings and new combinations of old concepts. The aim of this article is a preliminary exploration of this area on the basis of literature review, in particular that focused on social policy and co-operatives (social economy, social enterprises) and their interconnections in different areas of social policy.

Drawing on the processual perspective in management this article explores the process of the institutionalization of new practice in the context of value co-creation. The Service-Dominant logic perspective places the notion of value creation in the interaction between an organization and its customers. Therefore the contemporary research stream shows a bias towards the notion of a customer as a crucial contributor and beneficiary in the value creation process [Vargo and Lusch 2006a, 2008]. Following recent calls for research with a holistic approach it may be assumed that there is an underdeveloped processual perspective on value co-creation that offers a cognitive framework of routines and activities performed on an everyday basis within the Giddensian structuration theory. Using the Giddensian theory value co-creation can be perceived as a platform for the adoption of new practices. The purpose of the article is to determine the role of value co-creation processes in the context of initiating and institutionalizing of new practice in an organization. A comparative case study was carried out which illustrates the thesis that spontaneous actions form an important category of initiating change within the everyday use of value co-creation.

Given the rising role of users in innovation processes and the increasing amount of research in this field the aim of this paper is to explore the limits of our understanding of the user innovation (UI) concept. In doing so, the study addresses four basic questions: (1) Why do users create and share innovation? (2) Who is the user-innovator? (3) What type of innovation do users create? (4) How do users innovate? The results of a systematic literature review identified the main research streams on user innovation, together with weaknesses of past research and perspectives for future studies.

Post-apartheid South African schools are contending with unprecedented incidents and rates of violence that have not only brought untold humiliation to learners and teachers alike but have, in many instances, forced schools to redefine the way in which they function, and indeed, if they function. Repeated forms of condemnation, policy re-strategising and punitive measures have not only been inadequate, but have laid bare the sheer unpredictability of violence and its forms. In offering a dual-dialogue – one in addressing violence and the other directed at the inadequate response from education authorities to violence – we offer an interpretative analysis on the one hand, of how to think about violence, and on the other hand, about how a citizenship education of becoming can deal with the unpredictable consequences of violence in its own potentiality. We commence by looking at violence in South African schools, followed by an exploration of encounters, and summoning others to speech as a means through which to speak to violence.

The use of makerspaces in education has exploded around the world over the past decade (Halverson & Sheridan, 2014); however, their employment in professional development for teachers has only recently emerged within the literature. Previous studies have found that makerspaces have the potential to radically transform how professional development is delivered to teachers by fostering nurturing opportunities to collaboratively engage in professional learning (see Girvan et al., 2016; Kjällander et al., 2017; Panganelli et al., 2017). Despite its emergence in the literature, the study of makerspaces in teacher professional development is limited to those studies inspired by STEAM education (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math). Consequently, little knowledge exists about their use in professional development for second language teachers. While presenting data gathered from reflective feedback questionnaires of teacher participants taking part in makerspace workshops, this paper contributes to the conversation in the literature by exploring the utility and application of makerspaces as professional development for second language teaching. The goal of the study was to explore in what ways this type of experiential professional development might enhance professional learning and reflective practice and contribute to professional growth and development among early career second language teachers. Findings strongly indicate that makerspace professional development sessions offer second language teachers a positive and supportive space in which to reflect and expand on their professional knowledge of best practices in second language teaching by directly engaging with learning activities meant to support students in their acquisition of the target language.

Podstawę systemu różnicowania składek na ubezpieczenie wypadkowe w krajach wysoko rozwiniętych gospodarczo stanowią dane o kosztach świadczeń wypłacanych przez instytucje ubezpieczeniowe. Wskazano na wiele wad obowiązującego w Polsce systemu zróżnicowanej składki na społeczne ubezpieczenie wypadkowe opartego na danych o przyczynach i skutkach zagrożeń zawodowych. Przedstawiono propozycję modelu zróżnicowanej składki na społeczne ubezpieczenie wypadkowe dostosowanego do warunków polskich, w których kategoria ryzyka byłaby ustalana na podstawie relacji danych o nowych świadczeniach wypłaconych przez ZUS do podstaw wymiaru składek z tytułu wypadków przy pracy i chorób zawodowych. Projekt modelu przewiduje zróżnicowane zasady stosowania systemu zniżkowo-zwyżkowego w zależności od liczby pracowników przedsiębiorstwa zgłoszonych do ubezpieczenia społecznego. Zaprezentowano także wyniki projektu pilotażowego sprawdzenia modelu różnicowania składek na ubezpieczenie wypadkowe na podstawie danych z 10 przedsiębiorstw reprezentujących energetykę kolejnictwa.
In the developed countries, the data on the cost of compensation payments by insurance institutions provide the basis for differentiating premiums in the system of workers’ accident insurance. The paper identifies a number of drawbacks to the system of premiums differentiation in workers’ accident insurance now effective in Poland, which is based on the data on the causes and effects of work-related hazards. The paper also proposes a model of premium differentiation system, which is adjusted to Polish circumstances and assumes that a risk category would be determined in line with the ratio between the data on the cost of new compensations paid by ZUS (Social Insurance Institution), and the basis for the calculation of premiums in workers’ insurance against occupational accidents and diseases. As envisaged in the draft model, the varied bonus-malus system would be used depending on the number of workers notified for social insurance in a given company. Additionally, the paper presents the results of a pilot project aimed at the verification of the system of premiums differentiation for accident insurance on the basis of data from 10 companies representing the railway energy sector.

The text explains the role of the Supreme Court in the civil justice system in Germany with reference to a major reform of civil procedure that was enacted in 2001. The reform of access to the Federal Court of Justice aimed at striking a balance between individual justice and public interest. The author discusses the requirements of admissibility of ordinary appeal and appeal on points of law, which may be filed to the Federal Court of Justice. The German legislator has notably renounced the ratione valoris criterion (monetary threshold) and adopted the requirement of the leave to appeal. The power to restrict access to the Supreme Court was conferred on appellate courts. As a consequence, an appeal on points of law may be lodged only if it is admitted by judex a quo. Although the denial of admission is subject to appeal, the text argues that the reasons for admittance ensure that the public interest in uniform adjudication and clarification of law will be duly served.
