Opis:
Research on Czesław Miłosz’s works conducted in Lithuania, although not very intense, is mainly focused on the Lithuanian issues. One major trend prevails among Lithuanian re-searchers – an attempt to treat a substantial part of Miłosz’s works as autobiographical. Lithuanian translations of the works of Czesław Miłosz were explored in the article. The author poses the question whether works of the Nobel Laureate in any way shape and develop self-awareness of the inhabitants of Lithuania and if they help them to comprehend the diversity of the country as well as its complicated history, multiculturalism and multilingualism.

Opis:
This article presents the changes through history in the reception of The Captive Mind by Czesław Miłosz. The book was published in 1953, first of all for the foreign readers. There were editions in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Swedish. However, it mainly evoked emotions of Poles at home and on emigration. After the 1989, with the first legal mass edition, we observed a decrease of interest in Poland for the Miłosz’s text. It has become a classical work, it kept up didactic function. On the other hand, the world response argues, through universal interpretations and new translations in 21th century (a Belorussian, Russian, Turkish, Catalan, Serbian), that the Miłosz’s propositions are current and attractive outside Poland, in other geopolitical conditions.

Opis:
The article aims to present one of the most popular yet at the same time often misunderstood novels by Witold Gombrowicz – Ferdydurke. The article claims that the most important motif in Gombrowicz’s works is the problem with Form and in Ferdydurke the writer tackles this very subject. This novel – though not very long – is a complex and rich analysis of Form related to human life. The concept of Form is the key to an adequate understanding of Ferdydurke: it justifies unusual formal strategies and linguistic means used by the writer. It also explains a complicated plot and proves that what used to be regarded as chaos is in fact an intended strategy used in a logical and consequential way. The article is addressed above all to those, who being unfamiliar with Gombrowicz’s creativity, regard it as strange and incomprehensible. It proves that at least in the case of Ferdydurke this is not true and it is worth reading Gombrowicz’s works once again, as the world created by the writer is fascinating and multidimensional.

Julian Tuwim – contemporary reception
Opis:
The subject of the article is to present an outline of the reception of Julian Tuwim’s works in the last decade. “The Prince of Poets” of the interwar period, well known in the post-war era, is less and less known today. Post-war generations of poets made no particular references to Tuwim and his poetry, and even though many critical works are being published about him, Tuwim’s works do not engage critics who would be able to reconnect his writing with the contemporary world. Tuwim is disappearing from school literary curricula, contemporary readers remember only his children’s poems and one can doubt whether this situation can be changed by an extensive, multifaceted work by Piotr Matywiecki Twarz Tuwima (Tuwim’s face), the comprehensive and readable biography of the poet. It is an important book which tackles a number of vital questions concerning for instance the tragic alienation of the Polish Jew who lived between two cultures and wanted to be excluded from neither.

The article attempts to argue that Tuwim’s personality and work can be explained by looking into his early childhood and writing. It is definitely the period inadequately explored by critics. The author discusses key moments in the poet’s biography and most crucial elements of his work, paying particular attention to controversies triggered by some texts and themes in his writing. The article also focuses on the analysis of conflicts that Tuwim suffered from in his life. Tuwim’s strategy of provocation is also taken under scrutiny. The article presents Tuwim’s poetry as a lasting contribution to Polish literature and as a body of work which manages to resist ideological readings.

Opis:
The author analyses Tuwim’s Bambo, the Black Boy and tries to point to a number of interpretative paradoxes that have accumulated around its multiple readings. Particular attention is paid to the racial readings of the poem. What is more, the author discusses a variety of contemporary contexts in which the famous poem functions; these are often politically incorrect readings and interpretations which make no sense of the historical context in which the work was originally written. The article offers a detailed analysis of the origins of the poem and the circumstances in which found its way to the school primer. The poem is seen as expressing the need for accepting otherness and fighting cultural stereotypes.

The article is dedicated to the reception of Czesław Miłosz’s works in Ukraine at the beginning of democratic transformations and today. The author concentrates attention mostly on two aspects: translations and critical and journalistic discourse. This enables her to indicate the specificity of the way the Polish thinker and writer’s works have been received by Ukrainian readers. Having analyzed the above mentioned issues in diachronic perspective, the author is able to present changes and main tendencies in Ukrainian reception of Czesław Miłosz’s works over time.

Opis:
Maxim Gorky’s person has become a legend already during the writer’s life, and his perception has been ideologized both in Russia and abroad. This is evidenced by the analysis carried out in the article reception Gorky’s drama in Poland, the most important phase of which was determined by the changing political situation. The reception has changed substantially: from the spontaneous popularity of the Russian writer at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries through ambivalence in the interwar period, forced apotheosis after World War II to marginalization after 1989 and reinterpretation attempts in recent times. As the analysis shows, a significant part of Gorky’s plays has survived the difficult test of time. These literary works, for many directors and spectators, are a carrier of universal values, while the author is considered a classic of Russian dramaturgy.

Schulz’s writing in China
Opis:
Bruno Schulz has recently been discovered as a writer in China. The first volume of his short stories Ulica Krokodyli [Crocodile Street] was published in 2009. From the very beginning Schulz’s writing became fascinating especially for young readers. Many Chinese experts claim that it is similar in some aspects to Kafka’s writing, although direct comparison of the works of these two writers reveals substantial differences. Yu Hua, young and popular writer in China, wrote an introduction to Ulica Krokodyli.

Tuwim‘s reception in Lithuania
Polish literature in Lithuania
Opis:
The reception of Polish literature in Lithuania is a complex phenomenon. For a long time there was a dominant trend of expanding the area of Lithuanian literature by incorporating into it some of the Polish-language authors who maintained contacts with Lithuania. As a result, the horizons of national literature naturally broadened. However, the reception of Julian Tuwim’s writing belongs to a different category. It needs to be remembered that in the Soviet period Polish literature offered Lithuanian intellectuals a passage to the outside world. It was in the work of western poets, Tuwim’s work included, that Lithuanian authors sought ways of expanding their avant-garde forms and dictions. Tuwim’s poetry has been largely read in its original, Polish version; therefore, there are few books collecting his poems. However, the influence of Tuwim’s work is recognized by some experts in translations of his work. However, Tuwim was made publicly known in Lithuania thanks an argument over the naming one of the street in Vilnius after his name. The article analysis public reactions to this argument and shows how this non-literaryevent made Tuwim a public figure in the country.
