The purpose of this thesis is the comparison of some chosen aspects of life quality of elderly people that are chronically ill and reside uder institutional care or stay at their own homes. Research covered 100 seniors, ages from 65 to 92, including 50 patients of the Nursing and Therapeutic Institution in Nowy Targ and 50 ill and elderly people staying at their homes and using home rehabilitation. 50 men and 50 women were interviewed. To carry out the research I used the diagnostic survey method. The quality of life of the subjects was evaluated by means of the standard WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire. Three other standard questionnairies were also used in the research: the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), Tinetti’s Performance Oriented Mobility Assessment (POMA) and the Lawton Instrumental Activities of Daily Living scale (IADL). ZOL’s members rated lower satisfaction with quality of life and their health, compared to seniors staying in homes under the care of their families. In the study groups, significantly higher quality of life in four areas was found in the group of seniors living in their own homes compared to the seniors living in ZOL. Based on the research results it was found that the evaluation of quality of life of elderly people significantly depends on the environment they live in.

Sustained and balanced development of every society to a large extent is determined by the level of health security. This however has close relation with the level of medical services, under certain organizational conditions of each health care system and undertaken by medical staff in the therapeutic process. It can be therefore assumed that quality of life of a society is reliant on the quality of life of medical professionals. Due to the fact that for everyone, job plays an important role, research focuses mostly on the aspect of life’s quality of medical professionals determined by their job. It has been dictated by previous research experiences of an author, focused around the broad sense of working conditions in health sector in Poland. The aim of this paper is to analyze factors having influence on quality of professional life of physicians, therefore indirectly influencing quality of life of polish society. Gathered research material allowed to formulate the final conclusion: low quality of life of medical professionals in their jobs in Poland, might significantly reduce the quality of life of polish society, and therefore interfere with its current functions.
Hintergrund und Ziel: Nachhaltige und ausgeglichene Entwicklung jeder Gesellschaft wird weitgehend durch das Niveau des Gesundheitswesens determiniert. Zusammenhang mit dem Niveau der medizinischen Leistungen, die von Angestellten des Gesundheitswesens im das Behandlungsverfahren, in bestimmten Organisationsbedingungen jedes Systems der Gesundheitsfürsorge unternommen werden. Kann der Schluss gezogen werden, dass Die Lebensqualität einer Gesellschaft wird unter anderem durch die Lebensqualität des medizinischen Personal bestimmt. Als Ziel der unten angeführten Abhandlung wurde die Durchführung einer Analyse und Wertung der die Lebensqualität der Mediziner und Pfleger bestimmenden Faktoren, die indirekt die Lebensqualität der polnischen Gesellschaft beeinflussen. Methode: Textanalyse, Analyse der Ergebnisse von anderen Autoren. Schlussfolgerungen: niedriger Berufslebensstandard des medizinischen Personals in Polen kann weitgehend die Lebensqualität der polnischen Gesellschaft negativ beeinflussen und damit ihr bisheriges Funktionieren behindern.

Interest in “quality of life” issues originated in the 1950s. The concept found applications in fields such as economics, social policy, medicine, sociology and psychology. Quality of life could perhaps also be an object of study for security sciences as well. Despite the continued popularity of this category, social scientists are yet to develop a commonly agreed upon definition of the concept. This paper constitutes an attempt at answering the question of whether the need for security is related to quality of life and whether it is valid to introduce a new conceptual category in the form of quality of life security. If so, then it is necessary to determine whether it is a measure that is subjective or objective. Human needs such as security and quality of life are what motivates human actions and activity. If one of the above needs is not being met, the individual become destabilised. The homogenisation and standardisation of scientific concepts would render it possible to compare data from an interdisciplinary point of view.

This paper deals with the origins, security, history of the Slovak-Ukrainian border, which in 2007 became the part of the Schengen Area. Which can be considered part of the civilizational boundaries, as well as a significant geopolitical phenomenon. We focused on this part of the Schengen border in particular, as it has been through many changes in the last century. These conditions have many impacts on everyday life of inhabitants of border area. We try to approximate the impact of borders through a partial analysis of a questionnaire survey, questions of satisfaction with the place and with life in in border villages. We also pay attention to the border definition and the national border specifically, since we regard it as a significant socio-economical phenomenon, which affects its neighbouring areas.

Opis:
Ensuring care and appropriate standard of living to elderly people constitute highly significant aspects of both the state and local social policy. However, the practice shows clearly that the issue of old age has never been a strength of the social policy in our country. One could even get the impression that in old age quality of life does not need to be increased, while it can even be decreased. Such approach to the issue of old age should be highly objectionable. Old age, as the last stage of one’s life, should be lived in dignity, while maintaining the sense of security. Special care and attention should be paid to single people, chronic patients and those with poor financial situation. An appropriately managed nursing home is a place that could protect a senior citizen from social exclusion, while providing professional care and good quality of life. The issue is of high significance as in Poland the public nursing services have not been yet developed well and their quality often remains a matter of concern, also in the moral aspect. This paper enters the discourse about the need of institutional support for the senior citizens and points out to the quality of life of residents of nursing homes.

Introduction. Increasing incidence of disability among elderly people results in a growing need for long-term care. Aim. The aim of the study was to assess the disability and quality of life in people over 60 living in institutional care. Material and methods. The study group included a group of 100 people residing in social welfare homes in south-eastern Poland. The WHODAS 2.0 questionnaire was used to assess disability and the WHOQOL-Bref questionnaire was used to assess the quality of life. Results. The majority of the respondents had difficulties in getting around (47.94), participation in society (34.29) and self-care (32.40). The lowest level of disability was found in the domain of getting along with other people (6.67). The highest level of quality of life was observed in the environmental domain (63.62), and the lowest in the social domain (37.10). A relationship was found between disability and the quality of life in the study group. Difficulties in terms of getting around and self-care, as well as participation in society had a negative impact on the quality of life. Conclusion. The residents of social welfare homes were characterized by moderate disability and a good quality of life. The results obtained indicate the domains of functioning that require the greatest support for the residents of social welfare homes. The implementation of programs to improve the performance of basic and complex activities of daily living (ADL) may improve the functional status and quality of life in these people.

The Day Reconstruction Method (DRM) is a structured diary designed to measure time use in a manner that is more valid than traditional written summary measures, but less burdensome than real-time electronic diary methods. The lower respondent burden and administration costs might make it feasible to utilize this method in large national surveys. Past studies using the DRM have generally focused on subjective mood states during different types of activities. In this study, we extended the DRM to also measure suffering from negative symptoms, such as pain and fatigue, in 122 older adults, most of whom suffer from chronic pain. Results indicated that the method was well tolerated in this population, with over 98% of the sample providing interpretable responses. Chronic pain respondents reported spending a considerable proportion of their day suffering from pain, fatigue, and depression; a much higher proportion than reported by healthy controls (p’s < .01). Time spent suffering was associated with lower income, negative mood, and lower life satisfaction and quality of life.

Sampling from three wealthy counties in Shandong province (n = 855), this research examined the characteristics of an output well-being index, and the index shows good internal consistency reliability and ideal construct validity. It could be used as an instrument to evaluate the quality of life of Chinese citizens. The index was applied to an analysis of the quality of life of the residents from three wealthy counties. It shows that the level of the quality of life of the rural residents is higher than that of the urban residents, but the level of some indicators is imbalanced, and the levels of subjective and objective indicators are consistent. These characteristics of the well-being index of the rural residents from the wealthy counties are closely related with the level of the local economy and social development. It is advised that the output well-being index could be used to evaluate the degree of citizen’s need that was met and the degree of human being’s all-over development that was realized. It could also be used as an important policy instrument for the policy makers’ good governance.

The paper discusses the phenomenon referred to as the disability paradox by analyzing the concept according to three main aspects: semantic inconsistency, relationships between objective and subjective indicators, differences in beliefs regarding quality of life determinants, the sense of happiness and other positive life experiences reported by outsiders and insiders. Within these three semantic areas, issues are addressed presenting grounds for the perceived contradiction between the two phenomena: disability and high quality of life. What is more, the paper introduces topics for discussion providing arguments for questioning premises supporting validity of the disability paradox.
