SGH Warsaw School of Economics was the first location of the Children's University of Economics established by the Foundation for the Promotion and Accreditation of Academic Education (FPAKE) in 2008. At present, it coordinates the activity of CUE (pl. EUD) in seven academic centers around Poland as well as the operation of the Academy of Young Economist in its six locations. SGH is also the place of annual meetings of the Association of Children's Universities in Poland and the Congress of Children's Universities. Such an active involvement established a natural background for the research project on the extra-curricular children education in general and the activity of children's universities in particular.

The article originates in the experience of the Children’s University Foundation gained during the participation in the international project STEAM4U, implemented as part of the Erasmus+ program. The aim of the study is, on the one hand, to explain the concept of self-efficacy in the field of education. On the other hand, it outlines the problems of gender and origin inequity in the world of science. The author of the article describes the project initiatives undertaken by the Foundation that enhance children’s self-efficacy and presents selected teaching strategies that can be applied to the activities of children’s universities or other educational institutions. The study presents selected data derived from the research on the children’s self-efficacy, carried out as part of the project activities. The data allow for answering the question of whether the classes at the Children’s University strengthen the children’s self-efficacy and for indicating what types of activities are greatly appreciated by children. The participants’ answers reveal that the most significant factors influencing the enhancement of self-confidence in the area of STEAM are active involvement and the use of learning methods other than those exploited at school. The experience described in the text may be an inspiration for other educational initiatives, encouraging them to enrich the teaching process with strategies oriented on developing the children’s self-efficacy.

In recent years, in particular after 2015, tenths of thousands of unaccompanied children have arrived in Europe, mostly in Greece and Italy, escaping from war, conflicts and other hardships they were faced with in their countries of origin. A considerable number of them are very young (under 14 years) and extremely vulnerable. The challenge for Europe, in line with the obligations deriving from UNCRC, is to offer them a safe, appropriate environment to live and to carefully examine and protect all their rights, including their protection from violence and exploitation and access to education, health and social participation. In this direction and following EU action plans and decisions, European states are expected to further share responsibilities, collaborate and take all appropriate measures to fully protect the rights of these children.

The present paper discusses the outcomes of research realised as part of the ‘Recognising and encouraging the development of aptitude for learning mathematics in older kindergartners and primary school pupils’ project. To start with, data concerning the occurrence of mathematical giftedness in older pupils is offered together with an explanation of the reasons for the previous lack of interest in the issue of inclinations for mathematical giftedness in children. Subsequently, I present a description of the mental traits of older kindergarteners which indicate their inclination for mathematical giftedness. I also go on to outline the research programme on the basis of which I managed to: (a) develop diagnostic methods for determining the inclination for mathematical giftedness in children, (b) estimate the number of children manifesting an inclination for mathematical giftedness and children endowed with an inclination for outstanding mathematical giftedness, (c) determine the reasons why groups of children manifesting their mathematical giftedness become significantly reduced after the first months of education. Finally, I discuss the critical periods crucial for developing inclinations for mathematical giftedness in children. I additionally provide an explanation of why it is impossible to fix the neglected cultivation of an inclination for an aptitude in mathematics in the subsequent years of school education.

Social casework is widely used by social assistants in care and education institutions and rehabilitation and psychological counseling to provide social assistance in a broad sense to individuals, taking into account their current environmental situation. Social casework is treated in terms of a process that aims, on the one hand, at developing personality predisposition that facilitates adaptation to the functioning in society, and on the other hand, at developing the ability to cope with the demands of the ever changing world. Social workers play an important role in selecting the method of social casework: by providing assessment and therapeutic interventions, they undertake assistance activities aimed at strengthening and developing the client’s potential. Special importance is attached to empowerment and its fundamental principle to overcome the individual’s difficulties and make him or her independent from the supporting institution, including the social worker, by providing him or her with knowledge and skills that are necessary to function in society independently and effectively.

In recent years, the studies on the Theory of Mind have gained a wide interest. The authors of these studies try to determine the influence of various factors on the development of the competency (i.e. Theory of Mind) among children. Among the variables taken into consideration, there are disability or developmental deficits. Especially popular are studies on children with autism. Already in the 90s it was noticed, that the lack of hearing can be one of the factors which makes it harder to master the competencies of the Theory of Mind framework. Deaf children achieve mentalizing capabilities 3-4 years later compared to their peers who can hear. The current article is a review of the literature concerning the specificity of the Theory of Mind development among deaf children. The difference in the linguistic and social experiences of the children brought up in families where the parents can and cannot hear is described. It seems that the social interactions deficits are the ones responsible for the more difficult process of gaining the Theory of Mind among deaf children.

The article is dedicated to introducing Polish children’s books into the publishing market in Korea. Before the generation of translators completed their education at Polish Philology Faculty at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (founded in 1987), Polish works had been translated through different foreign languages. Poland is regarded as a country of interesting books for children, mostly because of the old tradition of Polish school of illustration, but also due to some illustrative works of young artists, or pictorial books such as the ones by Iwona Chmielewska. There are also interesting publications which came as the result of Polish¬ Korean cooperation – books that were created by Polish authors, edited by Koreans, published in Korea as Korean products. As cultural products created by many people from both countries (Korea and Poland) such books are able to cross the countries’ borders.

Rewards and punishments are an integral element of upbringing in a family. They shape attitudes educatively desirable and limit those undesirable. The presented article shows what kind of role rewards and punishments play in upbringing gifted children. On the basis of the narrative of parents recognizing their children as gifted, an analysis of parents’ educational strategies related to rewarding and punishment has been made. The results of the research have shown that parents of gifted children most often use rewards and punishments in domestic situations when they want to shape a specific attitude, achieve a specific effect in action or appreciate the efforts and achievements of children. It has turned out that parents do not use punishments to strengthen the development of children’s abilities. Rewards, especially praise and approval, are used when a parent feels proud of the effort or successes of his/her child.

Dynamic changes taking place in the contemporary world, which may be observed in the economy, politics and in the way the society functions, create many challenges to people in every aspect of their lives. One of the main tasks of today’s education is to help young people to obtain the skills necessary for lifelong learning, which will enable them to flexibly adapt to the ever-changing reality and consciously manage their own education, also after leaving school. Therefore, awakening students’ curiosity about the world around them and convincing young people that learning can be a pleasure and passion becomes the main goal of children’s universities. Such initiatives have been acting around the world and also in Poland for many years. The economic education programs aimed at primary school students offered by the Children’s University of Economics (EUD) and the Academy of Young Economist (AME) distinguish them within the rich offer of Polish children’s universities. Their primary goal is to popularize knowledge and build economic awareness among children, to promote entrepreneurial attitudes and to support parents in the appropriate economic education of the young generation. The EUD and AME offerings of extracurricular activities may also contribute to the growth of economic awareness among Poles. The high level of satisfaction of EUD and AME lecturers, as well as the unceasing interest in these activities among children, prove these projects to be a success.

The article discusses the problem of commercial exploitation of children, which is associated with many forms of physical, emotional and sexual abuse. Their common denominator is an instrumental treatment of children by the perpetrators who derive financial or personal benefits from illegal transactions and services involving minors up to 18 years old.

Opis:
Ethical and methodologically correct diagnosis of a hearing child of Deaf parents requires a specialist with extensive knowledge. In every society there are people who use the visual-spatial language – they are deaf people. They are perceived by the majority as disabled people, less frequently as a cultural minority. The adoption of a particular attitude towards the perception of deafness determines the context of the psychologist’s assessment. Diagnosis in such a specific situation should be viewed from the perspective of a child hearing as a bi-cultural person, a descendant of a Deaf parent – a representative of the Deaf culture and himself a psychol-gist representing the cultural majority of hearing people.

Poddając analizie wybrane teksty polskiej i zagranicznej literatury dziecięcej z okresu XIX i XX wieku, warto zwrócić uwagę na ich opresyjność w perspektywie nadawczo-odbiorczej. Kategorię opresji można obserwować w zależności od przyjętej koncepcji dzieciństwa przez autora oraz tego, którego z uczestników komunikacji literackiej dotyka przemoc symboliczna; może być to odbiorca dziecięcy oraz dorosły pośrednik lektury. Czytelnicy poznając świat mają prawo do poznania autentycznych opowieści (poruszających wszystko to, co znajduje się w kręgu zainteresowań dziecka w tym trudne tematy), jednak zbyt natrętna funkcja wychowawcza tekstu może stanowić swego rodzaju „ucisk czytelniczy” - o czym powinni pamiętać nie tylko autorzy ale wszyscy ci, którzy wprowadzają dziecko w świat lektury.
In analyzing selected texts of Polish and foreign children’s literature from the period of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, it is worth paying att ention to their oppressiveness in sender- receiver perspective. The category of oppression can be observed depending on the childhood’s conception of the author and also the fact which participant of the literary communication is aff ected by the symbolic violence (it may be the child as well as an adult reading intermediary). Readers exploring the world have the right to know the authentic stories (about everything that is interesting for the child, including diffi cult subjects), but too intrusive educational function of text can be a kind of “ reading oppression “ – so not only authors should be aware of that, but also all those who bring a child into the world of reading.

One of the new professions introduced into the Polish family support system that can carry out social and educational work, next to a social worker and a school pedagogue, is the family assistant. The purpose of the assistant's work is to achieve the basic level of life stability by the family, which will enable it to raise children. The basic task of the assistant is to support parents in properly fulfilling their care and educational function. Other tasks include: helping the family in solving social, psychological and educational problems, in social and professional activation, and motivating parents and children to take advantage of other forms of help and integration. The family assistant’s work is aimed at the whole family, parents and children. This article presents examples of care and upbringing activities carried out by a family assistant addressed to children and youth.
