    The purpose of the paper is to research the issue of preservation and promotion of the linguistic heritage of the North Azovian Greeks – Urum and Roumean languages, to investigate the request of Ukrainian Greeks to learn Modern Greek, which is the official language of the metropolis of representatives of this ethnic community, as well as to analyze the general linguistic situation in the mentioned environment, etc. The research methodology is based on the scientific principles of historicism, objectivity and social approach using general scientific and special historical methods. The scientific research carried out allows us to state that for more than a quarter of a century of its activity (starting in 1995), thanks to the support of domestic and foreign government and public institutions, the Federation of greek communities of Ukraine worked hard towards the realization of one of its fundamental statutory tasks - popularization/preservation of linguistic heritage of the North Azovian Greeks, meeting the requests of the Greek community of Ukraine to learn the language of the metropolis, etc. The Federation of greek communities of Ukraine tried to create a favorable basis for their further functioning, and, therefore, preservation. At the same time, the request of Ukrainian Greeks to study these languages remains insignificant to this day, especially regarding the Urum and Roumean languages. The analysis of the dynamics of the request of Ukrainian Greeks for their study shows that in recent years, it was possible to observe a certain increase in the number of people willing to study the Modern Greek, and this is quite logical. It should also be noted that the original Urum and Roumean languages are currently on the verge of extinction, which was recorded in 2018 in the UNESCO Atlas of the World’s Languages in Danger, becoming more and more limited exclusively to the sphere of everyday communication of the older generation of the North Azovian Greeks

    Opis:
    Метою розвідки є історіографічний аналіз доробку сучасних вітчизняних істориків із проблематики етнічної історії греків України, які належать до її найбільш давніх і сталих етнічних спільнот. У цьому зв’язку передбачені дослідницькі завдання, серед яких визначення основних тематичних напрямків цих студій. Методологія праці базується на наукових принципах історизму та об’єктивності. Було застосовано конкретнонаукові методи історіографічного аналізу й синтезу, ідеографічний тощо. Наукова новизна визначається насамперед тим, що дотепер заявлена тема в окреслених нею хронологічних межах не стала предметом окремого наукового дослідження. Висновки: Розробка проблематики етнічної історії греків України, яка була започаткована наприкін. XVIII – ХІХ ст. студіями вчених західноєвропейських країн та Російської імперії і значно еволюціонувала завдяки науковому доробку радянських істориків, отримала нового імпульсу на початку 1990-х рр. у працях українських істориків. Поява чергової хвилі наукового інтересу до означеної теми пов’язана з перезавантаженням вітчизняної історичної науки після відновлення незалежності України, імперативами державної етнополітики, запитами української громадськості тощо. Ці напрацювання побудовані на широкому колі нововиявлених джерел і вирізняються сучасними дослідницькими підходами, переосмисленням ключових питань, виробленням нових теорій (насамперед щодо етногенезу урумів та румеїв) тощо. Визначено, що вагомий внесок у вивчення проблематики було здійснено співробітниками Інституту історії України НАН України, зокрема Кабінету українсько-грецьких відносин (з 2007 р. – Центр досліджень українсько-грецьких відносин) на чолі з Н.О. Терентьєвою. На тлі широкого розмаїття питань з етнічної історії українських греків, які мають доволі високий ступінь розробки станом на сьогоднішній день, що насамперед стосується історії греків Ніжина й Надазов’я, їхнє національно-культурне життя в умовах незалежної України є найменш репрезентованим.
    The purpose of the study is a historiographical analysis of the works of modern Ukrainian historians on the issues of ethnic history of the Greeks of Ukraine, who belong to its oldest and most stable ethnic communities. In this regard, several tasks are set, one of which is to define main thematic areas of these studies and the degree of their analysis. The methodology is based on the scientific principles of historicism and objectivity. Specific scientific methods of historiographic analysis, synthesis, ideographic and other methods were used. Scientific novelty is determined primarily by the fact that this topic within the outlined chronological boundaries has not become the subject of a separate scientific study so far. Conclusions: Development of issues of ethnic history of the Greeks of Ukraine, which was initiated in the studies of scholars from Western European countries and the Russian Empire at the end of the XVIII – XIX centuries and has evolved significantly thanks to the scientific achievements of Soviet historians, received a new impetus in the early 1990s in the works of Ukrainian historians. The emergence of another wave of scientific interest in this topic is associated with the reset of the national historical science after the proclamation of independence of Ukraine, the imperatives of state ethnopolitics, the demands of the Ukrainian public, etc. These developments are based on a wide range of newly discovered sources and are characterized by modern research approaches, rethinking key issues of the problem, developing new theories (primarily on the ethnogenesis of Urums and Roumeans), etc. It is determined that a significant contribution to the study of the issue was made by the staff of the Institute of History of Ukraine of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, in particular the Cabinet of Ukrainian-Greek Relations (since 2007 – Research Center for Ukrainian-Greek Relations) headed by N.O. Terentyeva. Against the background of a wide variety of issues on the ethnic history of Ukrainian Greeks, which have a fairly high level of development today, primarily in the history of the Greeks of Nizhyn and North Azov region, their national and cultural life in independent Ukraine is the least represented.
