The objective of this study is to reflect on the Spanish time expressions that function as deictic elements. Deixis is a phenomenon strictly related to aspects of a pragmatic nature since it depends on the situational context in which the participants of the communicative act are. We want to search, discover and describe the pragmatic conditioning that determines the appearance and operation of this type of element in Spanish. Our idea is to demonstrate that in time deictic expressions the semantic content is not enough for speakers to use these expressions properly. It is necessary to resort to information that exceeds the level of meaning and find guidelines for the good interpretation of the expression in the situational and personal context. The group of time deictics is not heterogeneous from the formal point of view. It includes simple elements (for example, adverbs) and more or less complex elements (noun and prepositional phrases). We will focus on this second group and, above all, on the nominal constructions that include determinants and temporal adjectives since in this type of structure each constituent element performs a different semantic-pragmatic function and only the combination of these allows us to discover the definitive value of the set.

In this paper I intend to review some theories of the article, paying attention to the relations they establish between reference and +/–definiteness of a noun phrase (NP). The prototypes of +/–definiteness in Spanish are the definite and indefinite articles and NPs determined by them. Nevertheless, the actual reference of a NP depends mostly on its use (a speech act) and varies according to its pragmatic context. Reference and definiteness are mutually related concepts accompanied by pragmatic and semantic implications. I wish to make a critical overview of some proposals in this field of research.

On this occasion we will try to approach a topic that is not mentioned in the grammars, despite being quite frequent in the Spanish language, especially in its colloquial variety: that of the lexical reduplication type café café or guapo guapo. We begin with the explanation and presentation of the phenomenon and then focus only on the lexical reduplication i.e. the repetition of whole lexemes. We will present its mechanism of quantification (Roca and Suñer 1998), the supposed origin (Paasch-Kaiser 2015), its presence in the corpus and the theories about the role it plays in the language (Escandell Vidal 1991). In the end, we will proceed with the explanation of this phenomenon in terms of pragmatics, above all, that of illocutionary semantics (Wierzbicka 1999) and linguistic ethos (Baran 2010a, 2010b; Kerbrat-Orecchioni 2005; Nowikow 2003, 2006).

The Unaccusative Hypothesis states that the Subject of unaccusative verbs is an underlying or deep direct object; and thus, it is semantically patient and displays many syntactic properties of a direct object of transitive verbs, which have been interpreted as unaccusative diagnostics. For modern Spanish the following unaccusativity tests have been proposed: tendency of the subject to be in a posverbal position, the possibility of the unaccusative verbs to take posverbal bare subjects, and, according to many researchers, the preference to have indefinite subjects. Th e inherently directed motion verbs, such as arrive, come, come in and go, are often considered unaccusative by the followers of Unaccusative Hypothesis. In this paper we analize the semantic and syntactic properties of the subject of these verbs in Old Spanish and we show that the subject, at times, has the semantic function of a Patient and, at others, of an Agent. For this reason, they cannot only be labeled as unaccusative verbs, because they also present inergative constructions according to this parameter. On the other hand, the proposed properties as unaccusative diagnostics can be explained from the semantic, pragmatic and discourse factors which govern the information distribution in the clause. Consequently, their value as unaccusative diagnostics declines.

For some time now, great importance has been attached to intercultural competences in teaching foreign languages. The aim of this article is to present the contribution of cognitive grammar and pragmatics to this thematic axis in Spanish as a foreign language class. To achieve this, we will focus on the concept of prototype and stereotype. For this we will proceed to deciphering the meanings contained in the word „Spaniard”. Next, we will try to explain the reasons for their occurrence by observing some communicative behaviors that can also form the basis of denigration humor. We believe that linguistics can help in teaching intercultural competences as it helps to understand the causes of various misunderstandings that arise between representatives of different nations; misunderstandings, which often become the basis of various stereotypes reflected in slanderous humor. It is worth adding that the role of linguistics in this area is not only to convey knowledge about a specific language – in this case Spanish – but also to help understand the functioning of the human language and in this way educate future generations. Only by understanding the processes taking place in stereotypes, i.e., how they arise, how they work and how they can be reflected in humor, will we be able to overcome them.

The aim of this paper is to provide a comprehensive, theoretical overview of how proverbs are used as a communicative and discursive strategy, taking into account the speaker’s communicative intention. I will pay attention both to the benefits of the use of this type of formulaic sequence in the construction of the speech, and to the illocutionary force and pragmatic implications entailed by these utterances. In order to do so, some considerations will be required – the encoding of the meaning of the proverbs, the decoding process by the addressee, and the way proverbs are inserted in the discourse. This paper inspects the importance of such factors as the need for articulation of fluent speech, the assumption of cultural patterns, the appeal to proverbiality that aligns the speaker with power structures of the community, or the masking of the speaker’s voice behind a collective entity in order to socialize and release tensions related to interpersonal contact.

This paper discusses two topics which are very popular nowadays among the academics dealing with foreign language teaching, namely: intercultural competence and pragmatic error. The author notes the fact that those two notions appear separately, because the starting points for discussing them are usually different fields of science. The aim of the paper is to demonstrate that on one hand the two notions need to be treated uniformly, and on the other, that the pragmatic error should be included in error classifications which are references for both the authors of handbooks as well as people educating future teachers. For that purpose, the author defines intercultural competence, presents various approaches to error and its classification in teaching, and then explains what pragmatic error is and describes its linguistic characteristics.

In this article we intend to present the theoretical bases for the contrastive study of colloquial and formal registers from a pragmatic point of view. Although we start from the point of view of contrastive linguistics, we consider that neither the comparison of the theoretical grammars of two languages, nor the description of specific actions of learners of an L2, can show the nuances of the formal and colloquial registers.Formal and colloquial registers should not be understood as watertight departments with no relationship between them, but as two extremes within the continuum of speech. Obviously, this continuum will differ depending on the language in question, since certain lexical, pragmatic or syntactic elements, among others, can be understood as corresponding to different registers.Now, how should we face the contrast of this continuum belonging to different languages? In the paper we present both the techniques used to measure the attitude of the interviewees regarding different elements of the colloquial and formal records, as well as the concepts that will help us to analyse the data obtained. Finally, the analysis can draw conclusions that refer to the learning process and the teaching process.

El artículo se propone realizar un análisis sociopragmático del discurso medioambiental de la prensa española tomando como base una serie de textos del año 2019 y comienzos del 2020, así como consultas lexicográficas en la Fundación del Español Urgente (Fundéu) y diferentes diccionarios. Asimismo, se analizan las peculiaridades discursivas dentro del análisis crítico del discurso que funcionan en el campo de la ecolingüística. En concreto, se hace un esbozo del nivel léxico-semántico y funciones pragmáticas con una atención especial a los deícticos personales. Por último, destacamos el vínculo entre el discurso medioambiental con otros discursos en el marco de la teoría de la interdiscursividad.
The article proposes to carry out a sociopragmatic analysis of the environmental discourse of the Spanish press based on texts from 2019 and early 2020, lexicographical consultations in Fundéu as well as different dictionaries. We also analize discursive peculiarities in critical discourse analysis that work in the field of ecolinguistics. In particular, an outline of the lexical-semantic level and pragmatic functions is made, with special attention paid to the personal deictic markers. Finally, we highlight the link between environmental discourse with other discourses within the framework of the theory of interdiscursivity.

El inesperado desarrollo de la pandemia del coronavirus exigió que las sociedades del mundo contemporáneo se adaptasen a normas nuevas, no en pocas ocasiones significativamente limitativas para las libertades cívicas. La obligación de informar y tomar decisiones respecto de tales restricciones corresponde a los gobernantes, si bien, por naturaleza, el hecho de imponer cualquier medida a sus potenciales votantes puede provocar en los mismos una actitud de rechazo hacia el político en cuestión, aún siendo tales drásticas soluciones, hasta cierto punto, comprensibles por razones de fuerza mayor. Desde el punto de vista de la pragmática del discurso político, es, por tanto, esencial seleccionar los pertinentes recursos lingüísticos con vistas a conseguir los objetivos comunicativos planteados, sin desanimar al receptor del mensaje. En las intervenciones oficiales del presidente del gobierno español del periodo comprendido entre enero y junio de 2020, esto es la época correspondiente al desarrollo más dramático de la pandemia, llama la atención una importante acumulación de expresiones cuantificativas, en particular, el cuantificador universal colectivo todo. Así, en el presente artículo se analizan los distintos usos de dicho elemento lingüístico, dimanantes de las estrategias discursivo-pragmáticas aplicadas por el emisor.
Niespodziewany rozwój pandemii koronawirusa wymógł na społeczeństwach współczesnego świata dostosowanie się do nowych zasad, nierzadko znacząco ograniczających swobody obywatelskie. Informowanie oraz podejmowanie decyzji w sprawie ograniczeń to obowiązek rządzących. Niemniej z natury rzeczy narzucanie potencjalnym wyborcom czegokolwiek może skutkować ich zniechęceniem do danego polityka, mimo że do pewnego stopnia drastyczne rozwiązania są zrozumiałe w obliczu działania siły wyższej. Zatem z punktu widzenia pragmatyki dyskursu politycznego istotne jest takie dobranie środków językowych, aby osiągać zamierzone cele komunikacyjne, nie zrażając przy tym odbiorcy przekazu. W oficjalnych wystąpieniach premiera hiszpańskiego rządu, obejmujących okres od stycznia do czerwca 2020 roku, czyli przypadających na czas najbardziej dramatycznego przebiegu pandemii, zwraca uwagę nagromadzenie wyrażeń kwantyfikujących, a w szczególności zbiorowego kwantyfikatora uniwersalnego todo. W artykule analizie poddane zostają różne użycia tego elementu językowego wynikające z zastosowanych przez nadawcę strategii dyskursywno-pragmatycznych.
The sudden onset of the Coronavirus pandemic created the need for contemporary societies to adjust quickly to new rules that frequently limit our civil rights. Governments are obliged to take decisions and inform society of such. On the other hand, imposing unpopular rules on potential voters can result in a loss in popularity that can be devastating for a politician. This is true even in the face of a force majeure. Therefore, from the point of view of the pragmatics of political discourse it is imperative to choose those linguistic devices that would allow communicative goals to be achieved while not compromising the speaker. In the official speeches of the Spanish Prime Minister that took place between January and June 2020 and which coincided with the most dramatic period of the pandemic, the frequency of the use of quantitative expressions, especially of the collective universal quantifier todo, is significant. In this paper we will analyse various uses of this linguistic expression that arise from the discursive pragmatic strategies employed by the speaker.

Dialogue and pragmatics are two widely connected spheres. On many occasions, they are interrelated in the creation of real discourse. Several of the structures most closely linked to the dialogic mode or dialogue are analysed in order to study their relationship with pragmatic definitions. Finally, the search for these exponents is broadened in some current plays written in the Spanish language, defining their type of use both in following up on pragmatic recommendations and in contesting them; as well as the analysis of these items as a dramaturgical resource.
El diálogo y la pragmática son dos esferas o competencias ampliamente conectadas. Cada uno de estos campos, en muchas ocasiones, se interrelacionan en la creación de discurso real. Analizaremos varias de las estructuras más vinculadas al modo dialógico o diálogo para estudiar su relación con las definiciones de tipo pragmático. Finalmente, ampliamos la búsqueda de estos exponentes en algunas obras teatrales actuales escritas en lengua española definiendo su tipo de uso tanto en el seguimiento de las recomendaciones pragmáticas como en la ruptura de éstas; así como el análisis de estos ítems como recurso dramatúrgico.

Disinformation is a social problem that is reproduced in different discursive contexts and generates confusion in complex political issues, such as the protection and social integration of vulnerable groups. Applied linguistics, through the analysis of the pragmatic characteristics of discourses, can help to understand the construction of these disinformation stories as well as offer keys to counteract them in a process of media literacy that seems increasingly necessary. This article aims to reveal the pragmatic keys of disinformation discourses on groups vulnerable to diverse inequalities (immigrants, women and the LGBTI+ group) in the Spanish media context. Through the Critical Discourse Analysis of disinformation pieces identified by fact-checkers, it is detected that the disinformation aimed at the three groups is similar in its perlocutionary force and its incitement to a reaction from the recipient, but differs in the expression of intellectual, emotional and moral attitudes.

In the present study cooperation among scholars from different theoretical backgrounds proves to be a means to provide new views on areas of philological research. Thus, a review of historical pragmatics is presented, focusing on its development and how it overcomes handicaps when dealing with remote periods of language. Taking drama into consideration, as one of the most adequate genres for this discipline, cooperation between textual criticism and historical linguistics enables the use of highly reliable corpora in historical pragmatics. The analyses of the pragmatic markers hola and adiós in Calderón de la Barca’s plays demonstrates the results of this interdisciplinary cooperation.
Este artículo aborda cómo la cooperación entre especialistas de distintas áreas puede desembocar en estudios de gran interés en el campo de la filología. Se repasa la evolución de la pragmática histórica y se hace hincapié en los inconvenientes que plantea su estudio en estadios tempranos de la lengua. Teniendo en cuenta que los textos teatrales son uno de los géneros más apropiados para las investigaciones en esta disciplina, se muestra un ámbito de cooperación entre la crítica textual y la lingüística histórica; se ofrecen, así, dos ejemplos de estudio de tipo forma-función llevados a cabo en las obras de Calderón de la Barca, que conciernen a los marcadores pragmáticos hola y adiós.

The learning of a foreign language cannot be carried out in the usual theoretical way, but it is necessary to broaden the scope, focusing on active praxis. In fact, it will be necessary to establish a basis that implies, on the one hand, the implementation of real elements of society and culture in the classroom and, on the other hand, that these elements are based on valid samples, which is what the CEFR-CV currently demands for the effective teaching of a language. Interculturality becomes an invaluable ally, given that in every situation in which it is possible to establish a direct relationship between the teaching of grammar from the perspective of active praxis and the linguistic realizations that result from this teaching action, we must observe that it is necessary to teach a language in which there are no predetermined models, having to attend to the habitual realizations used by native speakers in real interactions in all their variants and fields.
