- Bioethics is a relatively young discipline, therefore its scope is not exactly specified. The etymological origin of the term implies that bioethics is simply ethics of life (“bios” in Ancient Greek is “life”). The article is an attempt to draw briefly the most important contemporary bioethical controversies, though not always the most difficult ones. I have chosen issues that are the subjects of public debate in the media as a result of the fact that they should be regulated by law. Bioethicians express wide interest in the problems concerning the beginning and the end of human life, in particular: abortion, euthanasia, death penalty, futile treatment, in vitro fertilization, prenatal examinations, cloning, transplantation, and others.
