The purpose of the article is to discuss the issues related to Bulgarian poetic works of the 1990s as a medium of cultural memory. Theoretical findings regarding the relationship between literature, memory (A. Nünning, A. Erll) and cultural memory (J. Assmann, A. Assmann) in literary science research have been presented. Тhe current literary studies in the field of relations between the Bulgarian poetry of the 90s and its connections with the past, cultural memory and tradition (P. Doynov, P. Antov) have been discussed. Various roles which Bulgarian poetic works (A. Ilkov, P. Doynov, Z. Zlatanov, P. Antov, B. Bogdanov, G. Gospodinov, B. Penchev) play in the field of the culture of memory have been described: dominate incorporating/refreshing the glorious and eminent national past into the structure of poetic texts, conducting a dialogue with the literary tradition in the form of rewriting it and redefining its meanings, holding a discussion with the national cultural heritage, updating places of cultural memory. It turns out, that poetic texts have the ability to create, reconstruct, affirm and transform memory, propose new versions of memory and form reflections taking place in the area of cultural memory.

Opis:
The texts of the oldest Slavonic translation of the Psalter are among the most thoroughly studied texts of Cyril‘s and Methodius‘ translations in all their different forms. The history of these texts has already been clarified in many respects. However, we observe the fact that research and publications are usually based on a very narrow range of manuscripts, the largest part of which were discovered and put into scientific circulation already in the 19th century. Very rarely, new data appear on the manuscript tradition until the 14th century, the studies do not even use manuscripts known for a long time. This observation applies mostly to the commented texts. This article introduces for the first time into scientific circulation the text of a so far unknown catena to the Psalter, found in a Bulgarian manuscript from the 14th century, and makes a first attempt to determine its place and importance in the development of the Psalter text among the Slavs.

The author analyzes the images of Paisii Hilendarski, printed on Bulgarian postage stamps. It is shown that in Bulgaria for a period of 92 years (1920–2012) a total of 10 postage stamps have been validated. They reflect the memory of the Bulgarians: both for Paisii and for Slavo-Bulgarian History. It is suggested that every Bulgarian cultural and historical age imposes its own rules on how to display the monk from Hilendar. The article follows the program of the project: ‘From one man’s lips to another’s ear’ … and all the way to the Internet’ (Project № FP-17 FlF-004/16.05.2017, Department for Scientific Research, Plovdiv University ‘Paisii Hilendarski’).

The paper examines Bulgarian names of concepts (terms or quasi-terms) concerning today’s and future developments of technology, computer systems as well perceptions and experiences related to these technologies and systems. The subject area chosen for analysis is that of cyberecology. The author discusses the neological character of the terms naming new realities and virtualities (including the terms with the formal element cyber-), the structural and semantic features of selected terms while emphasizing the influence of English models. The texts studied in the cyberecological area are considered to be term-generating with a view to their primacy within a new language for specific purposes. Furthermore, attention is drawn to the cognitive syntax (i.e. the ways of introducing new concepts) of the cyberecological texts. The general conclusion of the paper is that the linguistic observation of a sublanguage for specific purposes which is in the on-going process of creation is needed considering that it is important for the future of the Bulgarian language to have Bulgarian names for the future realities.

The study analyses answer given to three questions part of a nationally representative survey on linguistic attitudes towards written grammatical norms. These questions are aimed at gathering information about the possible attitudes of modern Bulgarians towards the magnitude distance between the Bulgarian written standard language and oral speech. Another aim of the study is to explore respondents‘ preferences concerning the question of synchronization between the two existing language forms - written and oral. The survey clearly shows that more than 61% of respondents are of the opinion that the differences between the Bulgarian written and spoken language should be decreased, respectively, there needs to be a process of convergence and equalization of the two language codes. The study applies the hyper-square method in order to explore which socio-demographic factors have a major influence on respondents‘ attitudes. The domineering view (69% of the respondents) is that oral speech should be in line with the Bulgarian written standard language, consequently, grammatical rules should be followed and taken on board when speaking. Finally, the chi-square method is applied when defining the factors which determine the respondents‘ attitudes. The study introduces the idea that conservative attitudes are likely to appear amongst Bulgarian adults as they have the idea of decreasing the differences between the Bulgarian written and oral language by finding a way of synchronizing them.

Opis:
The article aims to present and analyze those passages of the Hexameron (Šestodnev) in which ‘heretics’, ‘Manichaeans’, ‘pagans’ or ‘pagan Slavs’ are mentioned. The fragments are compared with their Greek counterparts (as long as these exist); the Old Bulgarian texts (especially those that can be considered original additions or loose compilations) are utilized for interpreting certain elements of heterodox doctrines common to Manichaeism, Paulicianism, Massalianism and Bogomilism. The Old Bulgarian translation/compilation by John Exarch supplies important information on the cosmology, theological doctrine and liturgical life of the Neo-Manichaeans within the Byzantine- Slavic world. The original additions and passages that can be seen as loose translations or compilations testify to the relevance of anti-dualist polemics even in the later periods of the Byzantine-Slavic religious community. The old Gnostic and Manichaean concepts, adapted by later dualist heresies (as e.g. Massalianism and Paulicianism), coupled with Trinitarian and Christological deviations from the official dogma, infiltrate the 1st Bulgarian Empire and provide a hospitable environment for the appearance of Bogomilism. In this sense, the Old Bulgarian Hexameron turns out to be an important source of information on the predecessors of the ‘Bulgarian heresy’. The original additions and loose translations/compilations of certain passages uncover some ‘common areas’ characteristic of all medieval Neo-Manichaean doctrines: the dualist creation myth, the belief in Satan as God’s ‘first-born son’ and the related Trinitarian and Christological departures from the prescribed dogma. Especially noteworthy is the passage referring to the Trisagion (Trisvetoe). The rejection of particular elements of the Liturgy of the Faithful attests to the dualists’ more diversified attitude towards the official ritual – not an indiscriminate renunciation, but the exclusion of those elements that were considered to praise the Old Testament God and to be irreconcilable with the Neo-Manichaean beliefs concerning creation and forgiveness. The mentioning of a Slavic pagan sun cult should be analyzed not only in connection with the charges against Manichaeans and Slavs concerning idolatry, but also in a wider context of the refutation of antique astrological beliefs and soothsaying practices. The comparison of particular lexemes, phrases and larger textual units in John Exarch’s Hexameron on the one hand and the Sermon Against the Heretics on the other makes it possible to conjecture that Cosmas the Priest was familiar with his predecessor’s work and made use of it when composing his own anti-heretic text.

The paper discusses the possibility that the Old Church Slavonic liturgical Service for Patriarch Germanus I of Constantinople is not an original Old Bulgarian composition, as is believed in modern scholarship, but a translation from an unknown (lost or still unidentified) Greek original. As a result of a retranslation of the Slavonic incipita of its Canon into Greek, it was possible to reconstruct (with varying range of probability) the original Greek acrostic which testifies to the translational nature of the Old Church Slavonic text of the Canon. Its author may be tentatively identified with the Greek hymnographer John of Damascus.

Opis:
At the end of 1980s and at the beginning of 1990s the question of the liturgical language (Church Slavonic or modern Bulgarian) became vital anew, the discussions were initiated by journalists, priests, theologians, linguists and others. In 1998 the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church allowed to use modern Bulgarian as well as Church Slavonic in the services but no church uses exclusively modern language for the liturgy. The present paper contains the results of the inquiry into the liturgical language in Bulgarian Orthodox Church, carried out in Sofia, Plovdiv and Kozloduy after the decision of the Bulgarian Holy Synod. The centre of attention is focused on the language attitudes of the liturgical language in Bulgaria nowadays.

The article aims to represent a recently recovered anthology about Bulgaria printed in Poznan, Poland, in 1938. Inspired by Diana Crane’s idea of the invisible colleges the authors retrace the intercommunication within a circle of researchers interested in promoting Bulgaria abroad. The revisited and almost unknown until now biography of the main editor of the book – Metody Konstantinov – is an avenue of approach to the specific paradigm that connects all the participants in the anthology. A short summary of the anthologised articles encompasses several main linguistic problems concerning the retrieving of the texts.
