Opis:: Anti-heroes. The theatre on the front of the Great WarThe article is an attempt to investigate the phenomenon of Polish theatres operating on the fronts of the Great War and discuss it as an unprecedented event in the history of both theatre and war. By means of locating it within the framework of Bakhtinian and ludic culture of laughter, the paper shows how the grotesque body moulded in the trenches of the Great War affected the modern conception of theatre and film – especially the growth and development of amateur working-class stages in Poland in the interwar period.

Opis:: Based on a high number of in-depth interviews and three case studies, the article analyses and reconstructs the role of body practices in everyday experience of the working and rural classes in Poland. Contrary to what the self-help and media discourse might indicate, practices aimed at paying attention to one’s body and staying fit are not fixed points on the agenda of the working and rural classes, structuring the narrative of their everyday life. Their relationship to the body is dominated by work which is often directly connected with the body (physical work, providing care to someone). The study confirms earlier findings in this area according to which certain lifestyle elements cannot be analyzed in terms of “free choice”. Instead, they should be explored taking into account the inequalities that exist in the distribution of economic resources, workload and working conditions, as well as access to knowledge and health-care infrastructure.

Opis:: A major objective of this article is to analyze how escort agencies’ female workers experience their body within the professional context. It represents the analytical attempt to reconstruct their way of perceiving and understanding the body that at the time of professional interaction in progress is considered a theatrical costume, which facilitates performing the prostitute’s role. The body that is experienced as an object, which requires constant reshaping, adjusting to working conditions, might get damaged, and worn out. The body that in the aftermath of internalizing new techniques of impression management starts being perceived as a working tool and enables, thus, the construction of new interpretative frames for the understanding of typical professional interactions and one’s professional role. Finally, the body that is abstracted away from one’s intimacy, experienced as an interactional partner mediating escort’s professional interactions with her clients.
