Opis:
During the political changes in Vilnius County, i.e. in the territory of the Second Polish Republic (1922–1926) with the capital in Vilnius, after 1914 the Polish society hoped for full acceptance of educational institutions, operating illegally before the outbreak of WWI. Despite significant difficulties created by the German occupier, Polish education – both general and secondary – was organized. It was mean feat primarily due to the lack of teachers. In the early 20th century, two schools preparing for the teaching profession operated in Vilnius: the Nazareth Sisters and an institution organized by Agata Karpowiczówna. Recognizing the need to educate teachers, a school for women named after Queen Jadwiga was founded in 1916, and soon afterwards the Education Committee established five more schools. Meanwhile, junior and senior high schools were also established in Vilnius. On the basis of archival research carried out by the authors of the article in the Lithuanian State Historical Archive in Vilnius, numerous applications and biographies of candidates for educators, primarily in the Vilnius area, were collected and presented. This documentation is diverse as it consists of surveys regarding personal data and the course of work, applications handwritten by the candidates, opinions of former superiors but also correspondence on the basis of which. the candidate’s studies and work can be reconstructed. The above-mentioned documentation comes from 1919–1923 i.e. a period of slow stabilization of education in the area in question.

Józef Zawadzki, the Vilnius bookseller and the editor, the animator of many important publishing undertakings, contributed extremely effectively to sustaining and the development of the scientific‑literary movement in Lithuania in the partition age. Moreover, he became involved very actively in coming into existence and publishing periodicals. He spared no effort to publish “Vilnius Daily” (in both periods of appearing it) or “Vilnius Literary Newspaper”. All action taken in this direction resulted from Zawadzki’s belief that magazines would influence the cultural life of the country very positively and be a place of the constructive criticism, as well as publishing and book advertisements. He cared about it both as the experienced editor, for whom the evaluation of published work was extremely helpful in gradual developing publishing successive initiatives, and for the bookseller caring for the information about the available writing production so that it could get through to the widest circle of recipients and arouse their interest.

Opis:
The novel Silva rerum has become a bestseller in Lithuania, although it seems that – as a work contesting the Lithuanian national myth – it did not stand a chance to gain such popularity. It was issued for the first time in 2008 and several re-editions have been released so far. The story of the noble family of Narwojsz, presented in Silva rerum covering the years 1659–1667, turned out to be extremely attractive not only for the Lithuanian reader. The novel has become a bestseller also in Latvia and Estonia. In Poland, it did not get such a large publicity, however – perfectly translated into Polish by Izabela Korybut-Daszkiewicz and published in 2015 – it gained great attention of readers and critics. The author of the article wonders what features decided about the reading success of Silva rerum. She analyzes the baroque stylization of the novel, in which, on many levels, the excess meets with asceticism. She looks at the phenomenon of micro-history, which consequently pushes the “great history” to the background (which is unprecedented in the tradition of the Lithuanian historical novel). She shows how Kristina Sabaliauskaitė transforms the authentic space of Vilnius, capturing the specific genius loci of this city and masterfully combining fiction with geographical and historical reality.

The article shows the course of the general visitation of schools of the Vilnius School District [WOS] in 1803. It was the first year when Vilnius Visegrána University, transformed into the Imperial University of Vilnius as a tertiary education institution, took over the helm and control of lower-level schools in the designated territorial area, namely the school district. In the legal acts of the Russian Empire, regulating the activities of the reformed Vilnius University, the sanctioned principle of the continuation of the Commission of National Education tradition was manifested in practice during the visitation of the WOS schools in 1803. The article presents the origin of general visitations in the history of the University and the instructions addressed to the visitators. Literature on the subject and the sources made it possible to show the visitators and to present their collective portrait.

Opis:
Aim: The aim of the article is to reconstruct the image of secondary education in the area of the Vilnius School District in 1803 designated for inspection by Franciszek Ksawery Michal Bohusz as the general visitor. Methods: The author relies on archival sources and takes account of the literature on the subject to date. She uses the traditional historical and statistical method. Results: The author analyzes the situation of secondary education in three Gubernias – that of Grodno, Minsk and Vilnius – out of eight ones belonging to the Vilnius School District in 1803. Primarly, she uses the report on the general visitation written by Bohusz for the Imperial University of Vilnius. During his visit in 1803, Bohusz visited 31 out of 33 secondary schools functioning in the Grodno, Minsk and Vilnius Gubernias. The researcher drew up a list of schools and systematized the statistical data in a table taking the number of classes and the number of students and teachers into consideration. Conclusions: The analysis of education in the area of the three Gubernias (Grodno, Minsk, Vilnius) in 1803, the territory of the Vilnius School District, confirms the thesis about persistence of the tradition of the National Education Commission – the thesis already present in the historiography. Despite several years of break and fundamental changes in the administration, the network of secondary schools subordinate to Vilnius University in the period of Commission of National Education was not destroyed. In 1803, at the time of their incorporation in the educational system of the Russian Empire, there were 33 secondary schools in the Grodno, Minsk and Vilnius Gubernias. Their structure, however, was varied, and this lack of uniformity is reflected, among others, in the number of classes. Schools with four classes dominated there. Most of them were in the Minsk Gubernia, where, after Commission of National Education ceased its activity, the authority over the schools was transferred to the Chamber of Social Welfare. The density of the secondary school network was not the same either, and the largest number was found in the Vilnius Gubernia. Her study of the information provided by Bohusz as the general visitor and of other sources from the era allowed the author of the article to conclude that the statistical data used in the literature on the subject (concerning both the number of students and teachers in individual secondary schools) are far from credible, and to a much greater extent than previously thought.

In this village there is a chapel of Our Lady Health of the Sick, which was built in the thirties of the last century thanks to the efforts of Włodzimierz Andrzejewski’s brother (a member of the Brothers Hospitallers of Saint John of God) and his family. It was consecrated in 1937. The chapel houses a copy of the image of Our Lady Health of the Sick from the Holy Cross Church of the Brothers Hospitallers in Vilnius. To this day, on the last Sunday in August, the faithful gather in the parish fair to give thanks to God, through the intercession of Our Lady, for everything they received from Him.

Opis:
Wykonał on ołtarz wukondygnacyjny i pozłacany, zapewne oparty o schemat łuku triumfalnego. Powstanie takiej struktury z jednej strony wiązało się z przemianami we wnętrzach świątyń w duchu kontrreformacji, a z drugiej strony wpisywało się w doposażanie katedry wileńskiej przed uroczystościami przeniesienia relikwii św. Kazimierza do nowo wzniesionej kaplicy – sanktuarium (1636).
The article cites a valuable source for the early-Baroque, unpreserved decoration of Vilnius Cathedral, which was destroyed in 1655, when the five-year occupation of Vilnius by Moscow troops began. The creator of the altarpiece, which was visually matched to the Gothic chancel, was a woodcarver from Nyasvizh, Henryk Küntzow. He made a two-tiered, gilded altarpiece, probably based on the scheme of a triumphal arch. The creation of such a structure, on the one hand, was associated with changes in the interiors of churches in the spirit of the Counter-Reformation, and on the other hand, was part of the retrofitting of the Vilnius Cathedral prior to the celebration of the transfer of the relics of St Casimir to the newly erected chapel-sanctuary (1636).
