    Opis:
    This article is a report of a trainig stay in Aberystwyth University Library as part of the Erasmus programme. The purpose of the authors is to present the structure of the Information Services Department. Special attention has been given to the efforts of the Library to provide its users with both traditional and modern information services. This article describes three university libraries which constitute the library information system of the university as well as the services offered by them, such as library services for research and teaching purposes, media services and information technology (IT) services for the purposes of the University and of information management (BIS).

    Opis:
    Contemporary academic libraries strive for state-of-the art solutions for working with users. Thanks to them, they can be considered as institutions open to the wide range of communities looking for specialized information services. In the article, based on statistics of visits and rentals, the author presents how the non-academic users of the Main Library of the University of Economics and Business in Wrocław use the library services. The presented conclusions confirm the necessity for the functioning of scientific libraries open not only to students or academic staff but rather to the wider audience.
    Współczesne biblioteki akademickie zabiegają o nowe rozwiązania służące do pracy z użytkownikami. Dzięki nim mogą uchodzić za instytucje otwarte dla społeczności szukających specjalistycznej informacji naukowej. Autor niniejszego tekstu skupia się na użytkownikach spoza środowiska akademickiego, którzy korzystają z zasobów Biblioteki Głównej Uniwersytetu Ekonomicznego we Wrocławiu. Na podstawie statystyki odwiedzin i wypożyczeń Gości przedstawia ich zainteresowanie usługami biblioteki akademickiej. Zaprezentowane wnioski potwierdzają potrzebę funkcjonowania bibliotek naukowych otwartych nie tylko dla studentów i kadry naukowej

    Rozważania dotyczą bibliotek akademickich oraz nauki w znaczeniubadań naukowych. Obydwa obszary – biblioteka i nauka – od prawie 30 lat znajdują się w procesie przemian określanych ostatnio mianem transformacji cyfrowej. Nauka tworzy nowoczesne technologie cyfrowe, a te z kolei zmieniają ją samą przez dostarczanie nowych narzędzi i metod badawczych oraz sposobów komunikacji. Z kolei zadaniem bibliotek jest dopasowanie się do nauki i nadążanie za jej oczekiwaniami w zapewnieniu potrzebnej do badań literatury i informacji. Podstawowe pytaniebrzmi: czy biblioteka i nauka są dziś na tym samym torze transformacji cyfrowej?
    My considerations concern the group of scientific libraries such as academic libraries, and the science in the sense of scientific research. Both areas – library and science – have been in the process of transformation, last known as the digital transformation, for almost 30 years. Science creates modern digital technologies, which in turn change science itself by providing new tools, research methods, and the ways of communication. Libraries’ task is to keep pace with science and to keep up with its expectations in providing the literature and information needed for research. The basic question is whether library and science are on the same path of digital transformation?

    Opis:
    The article presents the Library of Vilnius University, one of the oldest and most modern libraries in Europe. Its modernity is reflected in the types of services, the organization of the library space and work. The library’s policy is based on the philosophy associated with the mission of Vilnius University. It implies creating an attractive environment, supporting the search for information, study, research and cultural education. The main task of the Library is, therefore, to support and develop scientific communication. A large emphasis is placed on the services for the university environment, both for students and academic staff. Information technologies are used at a high level, and the use of digital materials now exceeds the use of traditional ones. The thing that draws attention is the organizational structure of the library based on tasks and services offered to users. The library is characterized by the rational use of staff and collections while meeting the needs of users to the maximum. It is focused on self-service: a large part of the collection is easily accessible, there is also a self-service store room of course books. The library houses space for individual and collective work, computer laboratories, seminar and conference rooms. While organizing the library space, the following important issues were taken into account: relaxation and easier interpersonal contacts; and therefore there are a number of zones of a quiet or loud rest. Part of the library is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In addition, the library provides consulting services through subject specialists and departments which deal with scientific information and communication. The library has also developed a system of internal and external communication. The modernity of the library is reflected not so much in the use of the latest technology, but in modern management methods in all aspects of its operation.
