- Ostrich fern Matteuccia struthiopteris is one of the most endangered ferns in Poland. This hygrophilous and shade−tolerable plant is vulnerable to extinction in consequence of disturbance of water relations in river valleys as well as tree stands exploitation. The impact of insolation on population structure and fronds size of ostrich fern was studied. The study plots were established in the alder−stitchwort riparian forest Stelario−Alnetum in western part of the Knyszyńska Forest (NE Poland). Density of ramets was greater on insolated plots than on shaded ones. In the sunny places trophophylls were on average over 6 cm lower and 3 cm narrower than under tree canopy. 37% of the rootstocks found in insolated areas produced 1−6 sporophylls, whereas only 28% of the rootstocks occurring in the tree shadow were fertile. Fertile frond production is connected to trophophylls size, irrespective of insolation conditions: 70% of the rootstocks, in which vegetative fronds reached height above 120 cm, developed sporophylls. There is statistically significant relationship between height and width of trophophylls and sporophylls both on the insolated and shaded plots.
