Opis:
The article includes a description of taxes paid by Jews to the state treasury / royal treasury, which contributed to the budget of cities. The analysis was divided into two parts. The first of them addresses taxes the distribution of which was handled by the Lithuanian Waad. These were: the Jewish poll tax, return taxes, housing tax and general poll tax. The analysis of the treasury materials and minutes of the Lithuanian Waad made it possible to state that the poll tax rate depended on the political situation of the state and the Jews were obliged to pay larger sums during wars. The comparison of the Jewish sources with the sources of the treasury of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania allowed for a detailed description of the return tax, which was imposed on Lithuanian Jews in the first half of the 16th century and continued to exist until the 18th century. It constituted a minor royal income but a significant burden for Lithuanian Jews. Tax sources also show that Jews paid their housing taxes and general poll taxes. The system of taxes paid by the Jews at the local level, through the local qahals, was not transparent. The amount and type of taxes collected from the Jews were determined by many local factors, among them the most important were the position of the burghers and the policy of the city owner. Depending on the centre, the system of collecting rents from Jews differed. In some centres the Jews were obliged to pay: the hiberna tax (winters bread), the czopowe tax (excise tax), the kapszczyzna tax (alcohol tax) and paleczkowe tax. In many cities, besides paying taxes, Jews were also obliged to participate in defensive military actions.

Opis:
Krzysztof Radziwiłł, otherwise know as “the Thunderbolt" (1547–1603) belonged to the leading Lithuanian magnates of the second half of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century. He ended his political career as the voivode of Vilnius (the highest secular office in the senate within the Grand Duchy of Lithuania) and the Grand Hetman of Lithuania. After the death of his father – Mikołaj “the Red” Radziwiłł – in 1584, “the Thunderbolt” was the head of one of the most powerful families in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the whole Rzeczpospolita. Continuing his father’s policy, he aimed to maintain a leading role among the Lithuanian magnates, aspiring to be their informal leader. Moreover, he tried to fight all attempts to increase the integration of Lithuania with the Crown, emphasising the importance of the particular interests of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. However, his firm political stance exacerbated conflict with Sigismund III Vasa, which affected the internal situation of the Rzeczpospolita. The conflict between Krzysztof Radziwiłł and Sigismund III Vasa was caused mainly by the disparity of their political interests. At the beginning of his rule, the King chose a policy which rejected the system created during the reign of Stephen Báthory. The monarch quickly started to build his own political faction, in which Krzysztof Radziwiłł played a secondary role. As a consequence, it led to many conflicts which paralysed the functioning of the state. An additional element which adversely affected relations with Radziwiłł (the informal leader of the Lithuanian protestants) was the religious policy of the King, who supported the development of the Counter-Reformation in the Rzeczpospolita. The last and most crucial problem was the issue regarding the position of the bishop of Vilnius, which affected the relations between the King and “the Thunderbolt”.

This article is devoted to the earliest registers of the private archives of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania nobility of the 16th century. The custom of drafting such documents developed throughout this century. Very few original noblemen’s document registers have survived, and our knowledge of them mainly comes from inscriptions in court books and from the Lithuanian Metrica acts. At the very outset of the century, books of document copies (cartularies) were written in the courts of the GDL magnates. Document inventories of the representatives of the minor nobility and gentry started appearing in the second half of the 16th century. The last quarter of the century witnessed the final formation of the inventory characteristics typical of later years. Based on the typology of documents described in the registers, registers are grouped into either general – covering the basic documentation – or partial. However, even in the general registers only the documents most important to the owner were listed. Hence, the registers of the private archives can turn into a “reality trap” reflecting but a part of the archivalia. The article also analyses the purposes of the drafting of registers.

Belorussian zamowy and other folk medicine texts as evidence for linguistic and cultural permeation in the former Grand Duchy of LithuaniaThis paper presents the lexical material stored in the Belorussian zamowy: names of holidays, prayers, designations of the sacred and clergy portaits, as well as names and nationalities. The documentation, coming from two sets of Belorussian zamowy (addresses given in references), shows clearly that these texts – which usually come with a classic construction, important for those telling them – preserved traces of multilingualism, different religions and dialects, as well as the information about the nationalities residing in the area. Some lexemes (or groups of lexemes) mix two or three languages. What is more, it often occurs that literary language and the standard variety (Polish) are mixed with Belorussian dialects, which stems from the historical circumstances the area studied. Such information could be preserved in zamowy because słowa or szepty (as they were called) had strictly defined structure, and had to include certain lexemes that always came in the same pre-defined order.

Opis:
Co-existence of languages in the area of the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the light of the works of Jan KarłowiczThe article discusses the issues of the co-existence of languages in the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the consequences of the phenomenon as documented in the works of Jan Karłowicz – the outstanding scholar of the second half of the nineteenth century, an expert and researcher of the “Lithuanian” version of Polish language. The article emphasizes the fact that the research on languages in the area of The Grand Duchy of Lithuania and results of their co-existence goes back to the second half of the nineteenth century and Jan Karłowicz was the pioneer of this research. He was the first to observe the following phenomena of their co-existence: interference; bilingualism and multilingualism; prioritization of co-existing languages with the unique role of the Polish language in focusing various functions in the history of The Grand Duchy of Lithuania; the diversity of Polish with sociolinguistic classification of its provincialisms and their division in the view of their origin; and the dangers to the Polish language in the period of Russification. Karłowicz struggled with the lack of terminology to describe the linguistic phenomena characteristic for the area. The article focuses on the classification of provincial qualities of the “Lithuanian” Polish language executed by Karłowicz in the social and ethnolinguistic area; and on the presentation of the phenomenon of linguistic interference visible in the provincial vocabulary in The Grand Duchy of Lithuania collected in “Dictionary of Polish dialects” by Karłowicz.

Polish language of the northern borderland
Opis:
This article presents various layers of vocabulary constituting lexis of the Tatar tefsir, i.e. the translation of the Quran to the Polish language of the northern borderland, performed in the 16th century by Tatars of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Most emphasis was put on the northern borderland, separated on the basis of criteria adopted in the literature of the subject. Selected vocabulary was arranged alphabetically. A context was given in which it occurs and a semantic characteristic was provided on the basis of lexicographic sources – Polish and the East Slavic Languages. It was found that Tatar tefsir contains words previously not described or present in other historic assets of north-eastern borderland. This is particularly true with respect to forms borrowed from the East Slavic Languages, including hybrid forms. What is more, it is characterised by the existence of Old Polish lexis, including names of people performing activities which were not recorded in dictionaries, and other, words used infrequently and in specific text types. Tatar tefsir is also a perfect source for historical studies of Slavic-Oriental relations.

Opis:
The main goal of the paper is to answer the question of what was unique about the use of books in Vilnius between 1522 and 1610. The reason to take a closer look at the capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania is the fact that it has always been a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic and multi-religious city. This observation allows the author to assume that the use of books there could have been different than in other European cities of the time. To find possible answers to the question posed, the author traces the changes in production, distribution and reading of books in the city. The research is based on several sorts of sources, such as printed books, manuscripts and documents from Vilnius archives (mainly the municipal archive, the Catholic chapter, the castle court etc.). He was supported by contemporary studies about early modern Vilnius scriptoria and printing houses (Kawecka-Gryczowa, Topolska, Nikalaieu), bookbinders (Laucevičius), book writing (Ulčinaitė, Narbutienė, Narbutas) and the history of the city (Frick). At the beginning of the paper the author recalls the main facts about Vilnius in the 16th century. The city had increasingly grown in importance as a political, economical and cultural centre of the Jagiellonian monarchy. The central part, divided in four chronologically arranged chapters, focuses on several problems, among them: the beginnings of Cyrillic prints and Skaryna’s printing house, languages and alphabets of books (Latin, Ruthenian, Polish, Lithuanian, German, Hebrew, Yiddish and Arabic), book production, dissemination, storage and reading. The author notices that a significant contributing factor to the spreading book culture in Vilnius was the royal court and chancery. He puts emphasis on the significance of humanistic schools that were established in Vilnius in the 2nd half of the 16th century by four different Christian confessions (Calvinist, Catholic, Lutheran and Orthodox). The most influential one was the Jesuit Academy of Vilnius. This process was accompanied by the establishment of no less than 11 printing houses. Having said that, the author argues that books printed in Vilnius, imported to the city and held in its libraries reflect a fruitful competition between main religious communities. At the end, the author reaches the conclusion that the use of books in Vilnius was similar to other European cities of the time, yet the capital of Lithuania still seems to be a good deal more complex a case. He ventures a hypothesis that the book can be deemed as one of the tools or factors by which religious or ethnic identity in Vilnius was defined.

Opis:
The article provides an overview of biblical translations created in the 16th century on the territory of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In the article a specific translation technique and the reasons for the differences between the original and translated text are considered. A strong opposition to the accuracy of the translation is a different understanding of the text, due to differences in religion. By the time of the creation of most Slavic translations, Christian exegetics was fundamentally different both from the ancient understanding of sacred texts and from the interpretation adopted in the rabbinical tradition. Intertextual differences may be due to differences in culture that have nothing to do with the religious system. The difference between the original and the translation is due to the fact that not all translators were equally gifted linguists; they didn’t know the original language and the subject in question equally well. Therefore, in the textual structure of the translation, we can meet with various kinds of deviations from the essence and form of the original, up to language and substantial mistakes.

Chamail is the name for religious, literary Muslim manuscripts, popular among the Muslims in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Its basic task and function is to serve as a prayer book, though it may contain all kinds of other texts besides the religious ones, or written for specific purposes. The present article is concerned with this additional, quasi prayer functions of chamails, such as speeches and addresses, fragments of literature, personal notes, spells and prophecies.
This article focuses on the analysis of lexical borrowings from the Old Church Slavonic language excerpted from two 16th-century monuments of Old Belorussian writing: the Supraśl Chronicle and the Krasińscy Chronicle. In the article the borrowings which got into the Old Russian language through the Old Church Slavonic language have also been considered, although they could have been of a different provenance. On the basis of the collected data two types of borrowings can be distinguished: structural-semantic and calque. In both chronicles dominate lexical borrowings proper and their semantics is connected mainly with religious matters. The comparison of research material obtained from the Supraśl Chronicle and the Krasińscy Chronicle leads to the conclusion that the former demonstrates stronger links with the Old Church Slavonic tradition. Most of its documented borrowings can be found in the oldest part which is a compilation of earlier Ruthenian chronicles.
