Opis:
Complete discontinuation of agricultural use of subalpine meadows in the Western Bieszczady, which dates back to 1940s, started the process of their overgrowing with brushwood. Based on available cartographic material the following features were analysed: changes in the area occupied by brushwood on Mała Rawka and Wielka Rawka subalpine meadows, their growth rate and the relationship between the overgrowth process and the previous manner of agricultural use as well as topographic conditions throughout last 30 years. In that period the brushwood on Mała Rawka meadow (in the past the area had been reaped) was characterised by a small initial area (in the 1980s), a significant growth rate of the area and its relation to the slopes exposed to N, NE and E, the zone adjacent to the timber line and steeper slopes. In 1980 on Wielka Rawka meadow (previously used as a pasture) a high share of brushwood was found (about 25% of the meadow area), whose distribution was related only to the slopes of N, NE and E exposure. In subsequent years the growth rate was low. The results indicate a progressing process of overgrowing of subalpine meadows by brushwood. The brushwood expansion is related to discontinuation of agricultural use of the meadows and its course depends on the earlier regime of cultivation. The pattern of brushwood distribution also depends on altitude, exposure and the grade of slopes. Those relations result from the expansion of the rowan tree, dominating in the brushwood, also climatic conditions and accessibility of the ground.

Opis:
The paper presents temporal relationships between the breakdown of tree stand in the subalpine spruce forest and the regeneration of rowan (Sorbus aucuparia L) as well as the rate of height growth of rowan stems. Rowans growing in a large gap recruited mostly from the seedling and sapling bank established under the living spruce stand before its breakdown. The rate of stem height growth was five times higher after the gap formation than under spruce stand. In spite of considerable age differences of rowans the variability in their final height after over 20 years of rapid growth was small.

Phytophthora cactorum was isolated from about half of the rowan seedlings taken from 2 nurseries. Additionally, Botrytis cinerea and Fusarium solani were found in diseased tissues. In laboratory trials, the pathogen colonized plants of the family Rosaceae, and most especially Prunus avium, Pyrus communis and Rosa canina, as well as Alnus glutinosa, Betula verrucosa and coniferous plants. In a greenhouse trial, isolates from rowan and rhododendron were found to cause necrosis of the stem base, with a rate of disease spread of about 1.3 mm/24 h.

Phytophthora cactorum and P. citrophthora were isolated from diseased plants of Sorbus aucuparia. P. cactorum was the dominant species on seedlings and 3−15 years old trees, while P. citrophthora was isolated only from 3−6 years old trees. Isolates of both species obtained from 10 host plants colonized stem fragments and leaf blades of S. aucuparia and S. intermedia. In greenhouse trials only isolates from Pinus sylvestris and Viola wittockiana did not cause root and stem base rot symptoms of rowan seedlings.

Opis:
Effects of ungulate pressure on the development of young generation of trees is one of the most important issues in ecology and forestry. Ungulate pressure influence on the development of natural regeneration has been also reported from several national parks. Our study on the effects of ungulate browsing on the young generation of trees was conducted on more than 500 sample plots controlled during one growing season. The overall browsing pressure ranged from 7.6% in seedlings to 20.3% in low saplings. The pressure of ungulates on the regeneration of Picea abies, the dominant species in the Tatra National Park, was by and large below 1%. Broadleaved species were browsed more frequently. The relationship between the plot altitudes and browsing intensity was statistically significant for seedlings and low saplings; at the higher altitudes, the browsing pressure was greater. There was also observed a statistically significant relationship between the type of former management and the browsing degree in seedlings; in the areas subjected to “landscape protection”, the intensity of browsing was higher when compared to strictly protected areas. Pressure exerted by ungulates on tree regeneration was very unevenly distributed, i.e. some plots were heavily browsed and many others - not browsed at all. The most affected tree species were Salix caprea and Sorbus aucuparia, although the percentage of browsed individuals rarely exceeded 50%. Other species favored by ungulates was Acer pseudoplatanus; despite the high browsing pressure, this species was present among seedlings and tall saplings, suggesting that it would be able to recruit to the tree layer. Abies alba was browsed less frequently than the deciduous trees; however, among the tall saplings it was the third most browsed species.

Opis:
The subject of this study were soil requirements of common woody shrubs, which may be part of the forest understory (Sorbus aucuparia L., Frangula alnus Mill., Corylus avellana L., Juniperus communis L., Padus avium Mill., Euonymus europaea L., Sambucus nigra L.). We focused on phytocenoses in the vicinity of natural forests in reserves and national parks of Polish lowlands and defined optimal types and subtypes of soil with trophic variations for each underwood species. The range of trophism for each species of shrub was determined using specific physicochemical properties of the soils, while soil quality was assessed using the Soil Site Index (SIG) (Bro¿ek et al. 2011). The ecological requirements of the before-mentioned underwood species were linked with forest typology as well as natural vegetation and they showed different soil requirements. Here we report significant differences in particle size and dynamics of organic matter decomposition in soils associated with these underwood species.

Opis:
Experimental data on carbon concentration in woody plant species biomass are very scarce and value of 50% of dry biomass is widely accepted in carbon storage modeling. On the other hand, some studies have proved that the carbon concentration in woody species biomass is variable and depends on the component. Thus, the main goal of the study was to determine carbon concentration in biomass of 7 understory shrub species (basing on 282 individuals): Corylus avellana, Prunus padus, P. serotina, Frangula alnus, Sambucus nigra, Cornus sanguinea and Sorbus aucuparia as well as to analyze variability of carbon concentration among shrub species and biomass components. Carbon concentration was analyzed for leaves, fruits, branches, stemwood, stembark, coarse and fine roots. Our study revealed that the mean carbon concentration in biomass of all species studied was 47.7%. We found statistically significant differences in carbon concentration among the shrub species studied in all biomass components. The mean value for particular species was as follows: Prunus serotina – 47.5%, P. padus – 47.6%, Frangula alnus – 47.7%, Sambucus nigra – 47.7%, Corylus avellana – 47.8%, Cornus sanguinea – 47.8% and Sorbus aucuparia – 47.8%. Additionally, we found statistically significant differences in carbon concentration among biomass components within the species studied. The mean carbon concentration in fruit biomass was 46.2%, in fine roots – 47.0%, in leaves – 47.2%, in coarse roots – 47.7%, in branches – 47.9%, in stemwood – 48.5% and in stembark – 48.6%. The variability of carbon concentration in fruit, branches and leaves biomass was higher than in the remaining biomass components. The variability of carbon concentration in biomass of woody species should be considered in carbon storage modeling in forest ecosystems.

Opis:
Managed forests are likely to be exposed to uncontrolled, spontaneous spread of alien/invasive species as a result of a frequently conscious introduction of alien species to forests in order to achieve economic gains. Unfortunately, we still lack data on the intensity of such invasions to forests on a larger scale. The aim of the paper is to provide a detailed qualitative and quantitative description of the existing regeneration of tree species, particularly the alien ones, and to determine the impact of selected factors on the regeneration of introduced species. The research was carried out in a mixed coniferous forest habitat in the "Uroczysko Główne". Particular focus was on the regeneration of alien species. Eight tree species were found to be regenerating naturally on the examined plots of which two were alien species. The scale of occurrence of alien species in comparison with native ones, particularly the black cherry, may now become a problem. Alien species accounted for nearly 25% of all tree species regeneration in the examined area and were noted in over half of the plots. It can therefore be said that the conditions occurring in the southern complex of the Niepołomice Forest have a great impact on tree regeneration and may favour spontaneous spread of alien species. The research helped to quantified and qualified the intensity of forest colonisation by the two most frequently occurring alien species.
