Opis:
This paper is dedicated to the development of rhetoric in Poland after 1989 taking into account adaptation processes at two levels: communication practices and research refl ection. The sociopolitical transformations have enabled an unrestricted development of rhetorical activities, which were impracticable in the former Eastern Bloc countries: advertising and marketing, political debates, civic engagement, academic freedom. The adaptation has taken place at the level of communication habits of citizens and rhetorical practices of rhetoric researchers themselves. The study adopts the descriptive methodology and focuses on several aspects: the process of internal differentiation of rhetorical studies, the infl uence of the American rhetorical criticism on the studies, the rhetorical perspective in linguistic research, media studies, and politics. The paper emphasises the cultural characteristics of Polish rhetorical studies, which draw inspiration from three main sources: 1) Old Polish oratory and its modern analyses from the perspective of literary studies; 2) analyses of the propaganda of the times of the Polish People’s Republic, including the media; 3) modern concepts from the areas of argumentation, rhetorical criticism, discourse analysis, and media studies. The overview shows that, after 1989, rhetorical studies can be described as a self-organising system cre ated by dense intertextual relations, relationship networks, and institutional frameworks rather than as a compilation of sparse individual works.

The article refers 18th manuscript compendium of rhetoric. Author was a member of the Order of the Reformati. He probably was a lector (i. e. teacher of rhetoric in the monastic college). The manuscript is the proof of the outstanding knowledge of the rhetorical theory. This lecture was intended for future preachers. The whole is subordinated this aim. The material is divided into three parts: „De partibus concionis” (concerns „invention”), „De proprietatibus concionis” (concerns „eloqutio”) and „De speciebus concionis” (describes the types of sermons: doctrinal, ethical, dogmatic, panegyrical and funeral).

Athenian funeral oration (epitaphios logos) belongs to the epideictic rhetoric. But according to Aristotle the topics used in epideictic oratory could be applied in the deliberative kind, after some modification in the matters of language. In this article I consider the means proposed in the narrative part of the composition, which can be used instead of argumentation in epideictic oratory, i.e. amplification, metaphors and actualization (putting things before the eyes, gr. energeia, lat. evidentia). My purpose is to answer the question who was/is the recipient of Athenian funeral oration. In my opinion there are three kinds of primary recipients: the dead soldiers in the battle, the listeners present at the celebration (Athenians and foreigners) and the Idea of Democracy itself. I also try to find the so-called secondary recipient of Athenian funeral oration. I treat Athenian funeral oration as a hybrid genre of Greek rhetoric.

The purpose of this article is to examine whether the work of Hermogenes can be useful in the analysis of the media. The Polish translation of the Byzantine textbook becomes an opportunity to reflect on the universality of the principles of creating persuasive messages. According to Hermogenes, rhetoric is the practical, civic skill of persuasion on important matters. Today, his ideas can be applied to television news. His textbook teaches us how to analyse the structure of television programmes, how to find – at a verbal and visual level – rhetorical figures.

Opis:
To make the political presence of women more visible in modern public discourse it is necessary to work out a language that would represent them appropriately. An analysis of the rhetoric of the Women’s Party (Polish: Partia Kobiet), established in 2007, shows how this problem is handled by the officials of the party. The starting point for the discussion is the thesis that rhetoric discourse is initiated and shaped by a given rhetoric situation (as understood by L.F. Bitzer). In the analysed instance, it is determined by: 1) social and political circumstances surrounding the emergence of the party, no deep-rooted feminist tradition in particular; negativism in the approach towards women’s movements in general reflecting senses and moods dominating within society, marginalisation of women’s issues and women’s voices in mainstream political discourse, 2) historical conditioning and culturally dominant position of the male model of discourse in public address, 3) the attempt to get involved in the discourse as wide audience as possible, coupled with the belief that the sense of unity is to be based on the gender identity. The analysis of the texts available on the web page of the party, viewed as being fully of representative nature for the party, shows that the rhetoric of the Women’s Party is not heterogeneous. It oscillates between the rhetoric of co-operation (through the agency of which the party looks for tools instrumental for achieving some kind of agreement and dialogue in the public debate) and the rhetoric of hatred, already well-established in Polish political discourse (which undermines the formerly mentioned conciliatory attitude in dialogue and co-operation). As a result, a type of a communication ensues that is not free from paradoxes and one that makes a creation of a coherent and consistent message impossible, and therefore hinders a creation of a credible image of the party.

The article describes juxtaposition as a tool of argumentatio, used by sports journalists. As a powerful means of persuasion, juxtaposition can play different roles in a text. Sports journalists use juxtaposition to strengthen their arguments. As the research shows, it can form a part of various types of argument: ethical, pathetic (referring to the reader’s emotions), logical and referring to modality and value judgments. Juxtaposition can also be a part of the elocutio, thus improving the effectiveness of arguments. In some examples it also plays the role of the connector between the argumentatio and refutatio.

‘The rhetoric of locality’ is not a term widely used in the literature of rhetoric, it appears however in some new research studies within the large area of ‘the rhetoric of space’ alongside such names as ‘vernacular rhetoric’, ‘rhetorical ethnography’, ‘field rhetoric’ or ‘in situ rhetoric’. While this short introduction does not aim at defining these terms nor at exploring their relations, intersections and differences between them, it offers a brief review of tendencies in this field of rhetorical research.

However, its reflections includes subjects such as communication strategies and discursive practices. Each narrative discourse involves combining referential and communication events. According to the author, such a view of contemporary narratology opens up a number of new interpretation possibilities.

For Aristotle, rhetoric was simply an applied technique of persuasion (techne rhetoriké), i. e. an aptitude or producing opinions. From today’s vantage point, it comprised not only the art of fine speech, but also the theory of communication, the theory of argumentation and the essentials of psychology and drama. The problem of multi-aspects of persuasion and argumentation was last comprehensively presented by Aristotle, who interrelated rhetoric with logic, the speaker’s ethos (reliability) and the theory of rhetorical affections, which were aimed at influencing the feelings of the listeners (pathos). It was not until the turn of the forties and fifties of the twentieth century that researchers took a new interest in techniques of exerting influence on people. The experimental methods of Carl Hovland, Fritz Heider, Leo Festinger and others have shaped the modern scientific formula of the old affections theory, now called social psychology. It follows that rhetoric and social psychology, the two fields of influencing people, are closely linked, what Aristotle was undoubtedly aware of. The aim of this article is to find an answer to the question about the relationship between the affections theory and social psychology: do we have the right to call it empirical rhetoric?

The Assayer of Galileo Galilei is a classical text of the Italian literature. It was written in the context of discussions on comets and is a response, word by word, to the Libra astronomica ac philosophica signed by Lotario Sarsi but in fact written by Orazio Grassi. From the formal (i.e. rhetorical) point of view the  Assayer is an example of the judicial, defensive speech. However, in the book one can also see the presence of the epideictic speech. The epideictic speech praises the methodological values of the Copernican vision of the universe, and blames those involved in the Aristotelian and Ptolemaic approaches. In the Assayer there is a very famous rhetorical period - the ending with the proverbial aut Caesar aut nihil - in which the internal connection between both types of speeches can be analysed. The rhetorical exercise developed in the present essay tries to disentangle the complex node of these speeches in this fragment.

The author of this article made an attempt to analyze the thematic material, as well as argumentative techniques in selected polemical papers by Piotr Skarga. She studied both the external, non-artistic evidence (e.g. the Bible, works of Church Fathers, Vatican Council Decrees) and the internal, artistic ones (i.e. enthymemes, topics, exempla). She demonstrated that the Holy Bible was for the preacher Sigismund III Vasa the greatest authority used for the reinforcement of his own argumentation. It was proved that apart from using factual evidence, Skarga would enrich his works with emotional content. For this purpose, he used mostly amplification, which for the Jesuit was at the same time one of the main tools of persuasion.

Pathos is a tool for arousing strong feelings in the viewer. The source of those feelings is the presentation of power and concentration camps in the form of a musical extravaganza.
