Opis:
The aim of this study is to discuss the rhetorical strategies and literary sources in Epode 2, Ad fontem Sonam. In patrio fundo, dum Roma rediisset by Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski (Casimir). It opens the possibility of an intertextual reading of the text (Catullus 31, Horace III 13, Ovid Metamorphoses III (407-417). My thesis is that the text, like the Horatian ode, demands a metapoetic reading. The “source Sona” and its waters, wherever located in fact, stand for an allegory of poetic inspiration, to be identified, again as in Horace, with both the poet and his poetry, but probably also with God’s grace. Thus the image of the poet’s motherland takes on a symbolic dimension and may be understood as an expression of the poetic identity of his own, a hallmark of the poet and of his individuality. In this way the poem becomes a kind of prayer and a performative act of speech.

The article discusses bruchsünden und todstücke, a book of selected poems by Witold Wirpsza, translated into German by Maria Kurecka. The book was published in 1967 in the “rot” series published in Stuttgart and edited by Max Bense and Elisabeth Walther, with typography by Hansjörg Mayer. The article demonstrates how the peculiar design of the book, as well as the connotations of the publishing series, and Wirpsza’s interests, allow us to read the book as a translation of a Polish image of language poetry into a G erman concept of experimental poetry book, especially in concrete poetry.

The article analyses the poetry of Miłosz Biedrzycki (MLB) as being built on the opposition to politically engaged authors from the 80s. In his case, defending the autonomy of literature does not lead to self-centred, private, authoritative, and confident narration. Biedrzycki’s lyrical subject is constantly in movement, unmasks his own activity, and proposes a vision of an open and modest identity which is fed by experience of the Other, and not constructed on the basis of common, heroical myths unable to recognise any failures

This paper presents how woman’s subjectiveness is expressed in the early (pre-Second World War) Kadia Molodowsky’s poetry and how it influences the definition of a social role of the poetry and the voice of the poetess in the debate about the Yiddish women’s lyric. These problems are described with the connection to the Jewish religious tradition which was a very important background of Molodowsky’s poetry.

The paper looks at two book-length poems by Alice Oswald’s: Dart (2002) and Memorial (2011) as translation projects, with an aim to understand both the nature of Oswald’s poetic practice and her concept of what is the meaning and goal of translation in creative work. I claim that translation, in the special sense the poet gives to this term, is at the very core of her work. In my analysis I concentrate on the physical aspect of Oswald’s poetic practice, the role of the body, movement in space, muscular effort, rhythm and memorization of poetry in her projects. I also look at the ways of crossing the divide between the human and non-human, linking language to the voice of the natural world and returning to oral poetry in her work.

musicality of poetry
Opis:
At its beginnings poetry was always connected with music. In Ancient Greece poetry was not only sung, but also danced. Later, the arts separated. However, in Romanticism music became once more a very important notion for poets. Romantics believed that music helped to create the landscape of the human soul. For the same reasons, musicali-ty of poetry fascinated symbolists. In my article, I am analysing two poems of Paul Verlaine, a French romantic very im-portant also for the Symbolist mouvement, and a master piece of Young Poland’s Sym-bolism and Impressionism poetry by Leopold Staff. As the poets use a number of pro-ceedings to change their words into music, the three poems are very musical. Taking into consideration that symbolists believed that music was able to transmit emotional meanings, the musical form helped them to prepare their readers to come to a deeper sense. Not containing any story, all poems are purely lyrical. Each of them evokes autumnal rain which mix with tears, all poetic personae being extremely sad. The musicality lets the readers understand deeper their sadness which reflects also their powerlessness, so famous in the Decadent mouvement. Briefly, thanks to the use of music the poets man-age to draw a beautiful picture of a Decadent soul.

Brest Bible, protestant poetry, invention, funerary poetry
Opis:
The Brest Bible as an Inspiration for Protestant Poets. Biblical Phrases in the Religious Poetry of Evangelical Protestants in the 16th and 17th Centuries. A Preliminary SurveyThe aim of this paper is to examine the impact of the Brest Bible (its lexis and phraseology) on the religious poetry of the followers of the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Poland and the Polish Reformed Church in the 16th and 17th centuries. The article is a preliminary study of the subject. The author analysed thematically consistent poems on death and divided them into three types: occasional poetry, represented by Cyprian Bazylik’s Short description of an affair at the death and funeral of the Enlightened Duchess Elżbieta of Szydłowiec Radziwiłłowa (Krótkie wypisanie sprawy przy śmierci i pogrzebie Oświeconej Księżny Paniej Halżbiety z Szydłowca Radziwiłowej, 1562); functional literature, illustrated with four songs from a Protestant hymnary by Krzysztof Kraiński (1609) and Andrzej Hünefeld (1646); and fine poetry, for which the author chose the The Quartan Fever Penance (Pokuta w kwartanie, written in 1652). For the Old-Polish Protestant authors of religious poetry, the Calvinist Bible is a constant reference point. It determines but by no means limits the horizons of imagination. Writing about deathly issues, the authors of occasional, high-art poetry or hymnary songs rarely borrow from the lexis of the Brest Bible and freely realize their artistic concepts. In their works there are only a few most expressive phrases and lexemes from the first Polish Protestant Bible. In the analyzed poems, Biblical phrases usually appear in the form of paraphrases, well-thought-out verses or Biblical scenes. The poets borrow words or Biblical phrases only when the described plot is scarcely known, usually drawn from a rarely referred to Old-Testament book. This gesture can be interpreted as a token of the poet’s circumspection.

The essay concerns the work of Joanna Mueller, who is one of the main representatives of polish linguistic poetry. Her project combines the tradition of linguistic poetry and body experience. This strategy requires the development of a new understanding of the language, which will no longer be conceived as a trap references, but rather as one of many elements of reality. The best way to describe the work of the poet’s imagery is stratification, both in terms of the attitudes adopted by Mueller, by the subjects, to the construction of the poem. Equally important it seems to be the prospect of motherhood, both in terms of artistic activity, as well as the practices of life.

In his 1534 Latin poem on the illness of the Polish King Sigismundus I that was a consequence of his hunting expedition, Marcin Kromer introduces the myth of Cephalus and Procris. Borrowing the subject from Ovid (Met. VII 690-862), Kromer presents only the last part of the history of this unhappy couple and does not dwell on the husband's and wife's emotions as much as his predecessor. This passage seems important as we see here the first use of this myth by a Polish author.

The sketch discusses the “relations and interdependencies of impossibilities” connecting the discursive poetry of Bieńkowski with the lyrical poetics of Leśmian. This formula, coined by the author of Sprawy wyobraźni, perfectly expresses these kind of references that exceed just a simple juxtaposition of similarities in subject matters or poetical figures. In terms of this plane, there seem to be are more differences between the two poems than conceivable similarities. However, within the plane of creative philosophy, the awareness of the language status in modern poetry, the abiding concept of reality and the attitude towards civilizational and social transformations, the similarities are particularly striking. The avant-garde poet does not shun from employing early modernist individualistic, idealistic, regressive and aesthetic (formalistic) tendencies so characteristic for Leśmian. If Przyboś, as Łapiński put it, “rehabilitated” Leśmian’s programme, Bieńkowski makes the Przyboś’ programme back again more like Leśmian-like, creating a programme not so much avant-garde in character but rather a one that relates to decadent aspirations of modernism in its narrowest sense. Not surprisingly then, he makes the lyrics of the author of Łąka his particular tertium comparationis of the phenomena in Polish postwar poetry, linguistic poetry in particular. This way, unusual power of modernity of Leśmian poetry is testified and well proven.

The subject of the paper is the image of Tel Aviv that emerges from the poetry of the poets of the Jewish origin but writing in Polish, in the 20’s and the 30’s of the 20th century, especially from the poems of Anda Eker and Maurycy Szymel. In the Palestinian poems of the young poet Anda Eker who was traveling a few times to Erec Israel, Tel Aviv, showing many Arcadian traits, seems to be the symbol of freedom and safety for the Jews from all over the world. Yet, the poem The Jewish state of Maurycy Szymel, depicts that city – a symbol of the future Jewish state and simultaneously the modern Babylon – in the context of the Biblical extermination. The contestation of the urban utopia that appears in this poems, reflects characteristic for the Jewish Diaspora diversity of attitudes towards the Zionist idea.
