Opis:
The text constitutes a reference to the article on applying social realism discourse in pop-art and modern popular culture (“Ars inter Culturas” 5 (2016): 209-239) and an elaboration by means of including Ukrainian art. It reminds about Ukrainian artists’ contribution to the development of the avant garde of the first half of 20th century and social realism ideas of involvement, “growing of art into” life as well as its presence in various areas of social practice. It also recalls the mediatory role of Władysław Strzemiński between Russian and Polish avant garde. Furthermore, on the basis of examples the author analyses formal strategies adopted from avant garde by the output of social realism, points to iconographic patterns of Ukrainian works from which Polish artists got inspiration according to their programme and critics’ recommendations. Also, differences resulting from the relations between patternmutation are important, as well as the duration of the doctrine which was in force from the first half of the 30s to the end of the 80s of the 20th century in Russia while in Poland in the years of 1949/50-1954/55. In both countries, it had important but different consequences, which results in different attitudes to realism as a general artistic strategy. Contemporary communication and globalisation processes have led to standardisation of visual language also in post-soviet countries, and internet memes play a significant role in it. In the world of the Internet, the elements of social realism discourse become memes detached from old meanings, lose their historical and political sense, become an element of entertaining exoticism which enhances forgetting about an oppressive character of the doctrine which, especially in Ukraine, has led not only to the exclusion but also to the extermination of artists.

Opis:
The author of the article describes a trip to Spain made by Józef Czapski in 1930. This outstanding painter and essayist, witness to the Katyń massacre, co-creator of the Parisian magazine "Kultura" [Culture] and Polish intellectual life in exile, at the time of visiting Madrid and its nearby areas for nearly two months was still a young artist, looking for the painting poetics closest to his soul. The visits to the Prado brought him two great discoveries: the works of El Greco and Goya. For Czapski, El Greco is a captivating example of religious painting and simultaneously - fidelity to the vision, the way of seeing the world. Goya fascinated Czapski with the thematic and stylistic range of his art - from “official” court portraits to dramatic records of nearly surreal visions, reflecting the artist’s fundamental belief in human depravity. The trip to Spain also had another meaning for Czapski - it was in a way a journey in the footsteps of St. Teresa of Avila, broadly: a reflection on the role of mystical experience in the spiritual life of man. From these two perspectives: artistic and religious, the encounter with the Spanish culture appears to be one of the more important and fateful episodes in the biography of Józef Czapski.

Opis:
Artykuł omawia poetykę i tematykę utworu Charisa Jakupowa pt. Путешествие художника вокруг Европы (Podróż artysty wokół Europy), jego przynależność gatunkową, osobliwości konstrukcji czasoprzestrzeni, typy obrazowania.
The article discusses the poetics and theme of the work of Charis Jakupow titled Путешествие художника вокруг Европы (The Artist’s Journey around Europe), literary genre, the peculiarities of space-time construction and imaging types. The linguistic layer of the text is also analyzed, with emphasis placed on those passages in which the author’s beliefs and mentality are revealed. Jakupov in the descriptions of European countries sometimes uses the language of Soviet propaganda and imaging characteristic of the official vision of the West in the USSR. In turn, the reception in the narrative of the perspective of the artist-traveler leads to the development of the subject of art history while reducing social and moral issues.

Opis:
The analysis of various painterly representations of the Volga River as well as its visual shape and meaning in Russian landscape painting of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, conducted at the level of iconography, perception and reception of the visual work, as well as at the deep structure level of iconic texts, has revealed the issues of vividness, semantics and emotional saturation of the Volga concept. The changes in the way space is presented, constructed, coded, perceived and felt diversify painterly representations of the Volga, its appearance and functions. Their interpretation, which is determined by two factors: the visual code (the aesthetics of a landscape) and the key to understanding the ‘system of a landscape’, together with the revealing of the diversity and complexity of contexts in which the painterly descriptions of the natural world take shape, and the basic characteristics of poetics and artistic language (formal and functional analysis of the principles and the constant of the landscape: space, the seasonal nature, light, colour, rhythm, etc.) show that in Russian landscape painters’ consciousness, the concept sphere of the artistic natural national landscape is shaped by means of metaphoric-and-symbolic perception of its objects in terms of homogeneous values − sacred, undeveloped, wild and ‘one’s own’ though ‘foreign’. This incorporates the category of an artistic landscape into the context of the semantic unity of ‘nature and culture’, which is important for cultural studies. The discovery of the merits of native landscapes is the most significant element of national self-identification.

Czech art
history of painting and sculpture from the Middle Ages to the 20th century
Opis:
The text is a scholarly interpretation of the manuscript of Wlastimil Hofman's lecture on Czech art, delivered on 16 January 1934 in the Jagellonian University in Cracow. The manuscript comes from Jiài Karásek's collection that since 1960 has been kept in Prague, in the collection of Památník národního písmnictví. Seventy years ago in his lecture Wlastimil Hofman gave an outline of the history of Czech painting, starting from the period of the early Gothic, up to the artists and works from the break of the 19th century that were most important for Czech art. The choice of the Czech artists and their works presented to Polish students was influenced by both the Polish painter's personal views of social-historical nature and his artistic preferences – Hofman knew well Prague's artistic circles of those times and historical and political determinants, also of art, of the then young Czechoslovakia. In the text of his lecture Wlastimil Hofman did not conceal the fact that he did not know the old Czech art very well, so he fully based his opinions about artists and about their works, especially of the Gothic, Renaissance and baroque periods, on opinions expressed by the Czech historians of art who specialized in those periods, like Vincenc Kramaø or Vojtéch Volavka. Only the 19th century Czech painting that Hofman knew well was treated by the Polish painter more broadly and in greater detail. In this part of his lecture the artist expressed his personal tastes and likings, especially in reference to Czech artists of the period of the so-called “national awakening” that started at the break of the 18th century, when, first on the grounds of the Enlightenment ideology, and then of the 19th century nationalism the Czechs undertook actions aiming at revival of their nation. Along with building the foundations of a new economic structure and modern forms of political life they created the basic elements of the literary Czech language, of literature and of their own national art. Owing to the efforts they undertook, in all domains of life – starting from economy and ending with the problems connected with developing the nation's creative powers and national consciousness (with a special emphasis on the element of education, ethics and art), Czech entered the 20th century as the only nation in Central and Eastern Europe that did not have its own state, and after World War I, in 1918, they established Czechoslovakia, a country that was an element of Europe of that time within the so-called Versailles order, and one that was the crowning of the many centuries of Czechs' and Slovaks' national aspirations.
