The article presents the lexical material concerning clothes vocabulary. The data was extracted from arrest warrants published from 1816 to 1836 in Publiczny Donosiciel ( Public Denunciator ) which was an annex to Dziennik Urzędowy Królewskiej Regencyi w Poznaniu ( Official Journal of the Royal Regency in Poznan ). The article presents the structure of the lexical and semantic field of NAMES OF CIVILIAN CLOTHES OF MEN’S FROM LOWER SOCIAL STRATA and its semantic and genealogical analysis. In this lexical and semantic field, 361 lexical items were classified, described and assigned to nine subfields which were then divided further. The genealogical analysis showed that a third of the vocabulary described are loanwords.

The article discusses linguistic and non-verbal features of 19th-century savoir-ivre. Babie lato [Indian Summer] by Stefania Ulanowska (1839–?), the source text under scrutiny, is a 21-page short story, which has most probably never come out in print. There are four conversation situations in the text: 1) a symmetrical setup (the interlocutors have equal social status and comparable pragmatic rank), 2) a symmetrical setup with asymmetrical features, related to the conversation between a man and a woman, 3) a less distanced asymmetrical setup, where the participants of the conversation are the mother and children, 4) a full asymmetric setup, in which the mistress of the house addresses the maid. The short story moreover features non-verbal etiquette features, such as a man tipping over his hat when he sees a woman and a man kissing a woman’s hand. The characteristics of etiquette observed in Babie lato are a supplement to the deliberations on savoir-vivre in the 19th century and confirm the changes that took place at that time in terms of courtesy in comparison with the old Polish period. They are also a testimony to the old culture of the nobility, transferred to bourgeoisie houses.

Ten wnikliwy badacz dziejów XVI stulecia wiele miejsca w swych rozważaniach poświęcał roli polskiego duchowieństwa w dziejach Polski. W polu jego zainteresowań naukowych znajdowały się również stosunki państwa polskiego ze Stolicą Apostolską. Zapatrywania historyka krakowskiego zostały ukazane na tle ówczesnej myśli historycznej.
The article contains the analysis of Church history in the historical texts of Wincenty Zakrzewski (1844–1918). In his considerations, the historian of the sixteenth century places a heavy focus on the role of Polish clergy in the Polish past. The field of his scientific interests also concerns the relations between Poland and the Holy See. The views of Wincenty Zakrzewski are presented against the background of contemporary historical thought.

Artykuł stanowi próbę nowego odczytania pięciu dzieł Adama Chmielowskiego (1845-1916), takich jak Sjesta włoska, Francesca i Paolo, Ogród miłości, We Włoszech i Szara godzina. Malarz inspirował się konkretnymi obrazami znajdującymi się w monachijskiej kolekcji Schacka, takimi jak Ogród Ariosta oraz Paolo i Francesca Anselma Feuerbacha. Opierając się na analizach kolejnych dzieł Chmielowskiego, wskazano, że postać Dantego oraz odwołania do Boskiej komedii stanowią klucz interpretacyjny do odczytania tych dzieł. Włoska twórczość Chmielowskiego pozostaje wyjątkowa na tle ówczesnych polskich obrazów o tej tematyce.
This paper aims to read anew five works by Adam Chmielowski (1845-1916): The Italian Siesta, Francesca and Paolo, The Garden of Love, In Italy and The Gray Hour. It has been previously noted that the painter was inspired by specific paintings from Schack’s collection in Munich, such as The Garden of Ariosto and Paolo and Francesca, painted by Anselm Feuerbach. Based on an analysis of Chmielowski’s later paintings, the author demonstrates that the figure of Dante and the references to the Divine Comedy constitute an interpretative key to the deciphering of these works. Chmielowski’s Italian work remains unique against the backdrop of Polish paintings on this subject at that time.

The treatise contains an analysis of the origins of Poland according to Joachim Lelewel's concept. His belief that Slavs, whom he identified as Dacians, were the people who preserved the highest social and ethical values received from God in the act of creation, was documented. It also presents an analysis of the by thesis adopted the historian saying that these values, identical with the essential truth of the Gospel, were threatened by the Western feudal civilisation represented by the Latin Church and that this was the most important issue in the origins of Poland.

The article presents a formerly unknown drawing by Norwid, titled “Bearded man in antique-style robes,” originally made in Rome in 1847 and recently sold by the Desa-Unicum art auction house. The drawing is representative of the style developed by Norwid in the second half of the 1840s.

Persistence of Synonymy in Polish Medical Terminology at the Turn of the Nineteenth and Twentieth CenturiesThis article presents the results of an analysis of 940 synonymic strings excerpted from two translated medical dictionaries: Słownik terminologii lekarskiej polskiej [A Dictionary of Polish Medical Terminology], published in 1881, and Słownik lekarski polski [A Polish Medical Dictionary], published in 1905. The analysis of quantitative and qualitative changes in those strings indicates a significant persistence (703 preserved strings) and stability of synonymy (320 strings with the same number of terms and the same composition of synonyms).Trwałość synonimii w polskiej terminologii medycznej przełomu XIX i XX wiekuArtykuł przedstawia wyniki analizy 940 ciągów synonimicznych wyekscerpowanych ze Słownika terminologii lekarskiej polskiej, wydanego w 1881 roku, i Słownika lekarskiego polskiego, wydanego w 1905 roku; obydwa słowniki to leksykony przekładowe. Analiza ilościowych i jakościowych zmian tych ciągów wykazała znaczną trwałość i stabilność synonimii (703 zachowane ciągi, 320 ciągów o niezmienionej liczbie terminów i niezmienionym składzie synonimów).

This article falls into the trend of restoring the memory of the so-called creators of minorum gentium, that is, „smaller format”. It contains basic biographical information which was obtained through the inquiry, concerning the forgotten Lviv writer Bolesław Eulenfeld, as well as a literary sketch of his work, along with its reception at the time (and contemporary). During his lifetime, Eulenfeld was an extremely prolific and popular playwright in Galicia, children’s literature writer, and even an actor for several years. Today he is mentioned rarely, hardly ever, so we decided to bring his profile closer and restore the memory of him.

The nineteenth century Russian women memoirism presents a valuable source of information concerning Polish-Russian literary relationships. A. Kern and A. Panaeva’s memoirs justify that A. Mickiewicz was a well-known and appreciated poet in Russia and his works were perceived by Russian literary elites as a symbol of struggle for national liberation. Russian publishers and editors of literary magazines played a crucial role in the popularization of Mickiewicz’s literary output. His poems, translated into Russian by Z. Sierakowski or W. Szczastny, often appeared in Russian literary magazines. Russian Decembrist writers (P. Annenkova and M. Volkonska) in their memoirs written in the Siberian exile presented in the most favourable light Poles (S. Leparski and M. Rukiewicz) who were also exiled to Siberia. But, on the other hand, in T. Bulharin’s memoirs, whose controversial activity was condemned by Russian intellectual elites, as well as in A. Smirnova’s opinion, which represented the official line of the Russian aristocracy, we find negative images of Poles and the “Polish question”.

Do wybuchu powstania listopadowego przez ziemie polskie przetoczyły się dwie główne fale modernizacyjne: przed- i porozbiorowa. Okres zaborów okazał się czasem prawdziwych wyzwań modernizacyjnych – zachodzących już w nowych warunkach politycznych. Wśród licznych przeobrażeń modernizacyjnych mających miejsce na obszarze dawnej Rzeczypospolitej w pierwszych trzech dekadach okresu zaborów (do roku 1830) należy m.in. wymienić zmiany społeczno-polityczne, administracyjne, cywilizacyjno-przemysłowe, gospodarcze, urbanistyczne, naukowe, oświatowo-edukacyjne, kulturowe, estetyczne, obyczajowe, moralne, aksjologiczne, mentalnościowe. W niniejszym artykule uwagą został objęty jeden z rodzajów ówczesnych procesów modernizacyjnych mających miejsce na obszarach wiejskich w pierwszych trzech dekadach zaborów (do wybuchu powstania listopadowego w 1830 r.) – związany z aktywnością gospodarczą ziemian: zjawisko nazwane tutaj „modernizacją gorzelnianą”. Tego rodzaju niebezpieczna modernizacja przestrzeni wiejskich była ważną wersją tendencji modernizacyjnych w omawianym okresie, posiadającą istotne i długofalowe skutki dla całego społeczeństwa polskiego. Problem ten znalazł swoje odzwierciedlenie w szeroko rozumianym piśmiennictwie polskim pierwszych dekad zaborów: zarówno w dziełach o charakterze fikcjonalnym, jak też w utworach mających charakter informacyjny, publicystyczny, perswazyjny, wspomnieniowy.
Until the outbreak of the November Uprising, two major tides of modernization swept across Poland pre- and post-Partitions. The Partitions turned out to be a period of real modernization challenges, taking place in the new political conditions. Among the many transformations taking place in the area of the former Republic of Poland in the first three decades of the Partitions (until 1830) there are socio-political, administrative, industrial, economic, urban, scientific, educational, cultural, aesthetic, moral, moral, axiological, and mental changes. In this article, attention was placed on one type of these modernization processes of the time, taking place in rural areas in the first three decades of the Partitions (until the outbreak of the November Uprising in 1830). They were related to the economic activity of landed gentry: a phenomenon called here “the modernization of distilleries”. This kind of dangerous modernization of the countryside was a poignant version of modernization in the period having significant and long-term consequences for the entire Polish society. This problem was reflected in the wider Polish literature of the first decades of the Partitions: both in fiction, as well as in informative, journalistic and persuasive literature on top of journals.

In 1860 a guide to scientific studies in Paris to youth was published through the efforts of Polish emigrants in France. This book was written by the students of the Polish School in Paris. The article analyzes information about the subjects in the undergraduate and the teaching of geology at the university, National Museum of Natural History and engineering schools, principally École des Mines. The interest of this guide is not limited therefore to the history of Polish-French scientific relations. Many Polish geologists and engineers working in South America, including Ernest Malinowski (1818-1899), Ignacy Domeyko (1802-1889), Edward Habich, Aleksander Babinski (1823-1899), Władysław Folkierski (1841-1904), have been trained in Paris. The edition of this book is also valuable evidence of a rich scientific activity of the Polish political emigration in France.

This essay investigates the mechanisms of conceptual change in the discourse of Polish political emigration after the November Insurrection of 1830–1. To this end, a methodological apparatus is employed that has been elaborated by scholars of the German ‘history of concepts’ (Begriffsgeschichte) school and by Anglo-Saxon researchers specialised in the intellectual history and studies on ideology. Quoting a series of period source materials, I argue that the decades of 1830s and 1840s are interpretable in the Polish context as the time of a fundamental breakthrough in the sphere of ideas and political concepts. This turn was caused, for one thing, by the absorbability of Polish political discourse of the time, with a number of new ideas and concepts appearing, particularly those borrowed from the French debates ongoing in the period concerned. For another, it resulted from ardent disputes going on in the circles of the Polish Great Emigration. The concluding remarks stress the need to render a method applicable with such considerations empirically rooted since the dynamism of conceptual change is fundamentally different depending on the period as well as national and linguistic context.
