Opis:
The paper presents an early literary critical reception of 'Zygmunt August', a trilogy by Lucjan Rydel. The analysis includes, above all, reviews whose subject is a literary work as whole, rather than its particular sections. It has been proven that critical remarks on Rydel’s work could be included in the discussion on the possibilities and needs of the Polish historical drama. The most essential problems of the text revolve around the difficulties connected with finding the right assessment and description criteria of Rydel’s work by professional readers. They were situated either against the pattern of national drama, or it was qualified as a popular drama. Some crucial discrepancies related to ‘measure,’ according to which Rydel’s work should be evaluated, also appeared, depending on whether it was treated as a drama or ‘performance.’

Opis:
Music is one of the aural components of radio drama. The aim of this article is to de-scribe the function as well as the meaning of music in radio drama. Numerous examples used in this paper indicate a dual character of music in radio drama: on the one hand, it is created by a composer as original music, but on the other hand, it constitutes musical background in most radio plays. The paper takes its departure point in semiotic theory and research.

Opis:
The article focuses on the influence of Wagnerian ideas on the concept of 19th-century Czech national opera. This can be partly explained by the fact that Czech culture was strongly connected with German culture. However, early Czech operas, and even some of Smetana’s, were quite influenced by the German singspiel — a genre with predominantly lyrical and comic elements. Their national character was manifested mainly by folk elements within the action and the music (countryside scenery, national dances, adaptations of folk melodies). The ideal of this type of national opera is Smetana’s The Bartered Bride. The same composer created a work that presents a completely different understanding of the national style and opera. In Libuše, he tried to use the Wagnerian idea of musical drama for transforming the concept of the Czech national opera. In the article, there are quotations of the composer’s statements about Libuše as a work that has a “unique importance in our [Czech] history”. Wagner’s influences are apparent on a few levels in this operatic work. The libretto is based on the mythical story about Queen Libuše, the legendary founder of Prague, and in the opera she is a symbol of the Czech nation. Wagnerian influences are found in the formal structure (unendliche Melodie), as well as in the musical language of Libuše. Smetana used a system of leitmotifs consequently, connecting them with the characters (Libuše, Přemysl) and ideas (motifs of the nation, motif of authority). Perhaps it was under the influence of the idea of Bühnenfestpiel that Smetana designed Libuše as a slavnostni zpěvohra for special celebrations in the life of the Czech nation.

‘Great Britain, Great Expectations’: The Representation of Polish Migration to Great Britain in Londyńczycy/LondonersFollowing the 2004 expansion of the European Union (EU), Polish migrant workers began arriving in the United Kingdom on an unprecedented scale. Londoners (Londyńczycy, 2008-9) was a response to this. Exploring the lives of Polish migrants in London, the series became an instant success on Polish television, regularly attracting around four million viewers. This article explores how Londoners represents Britishness and Polishness to its target Polish audience. It will argue that the series negotiates questions of Polish national identity, which over the past 20 years has been undergoing fundamental redefinition as a result of the ending of the Cold War and Poland’s accession to the EU.
