The article is discusses possible limitations of the rationalistic concept of human action within cultural theory. Here, rationality of human action is construed in terms of decision theory. Two kinds of limitations are considered: (1) resulting from non-rationalistic conceptions of human action; (2) implied by anti individualistic approaches to socio-cultural phenomena, especially structuralist and functionalist ones. Proposed conclusions aim for a reconciliation of rationalistic theory of action and principal premises of cultural materialism.

The article is an attempt to analyse the emergent practices around designer drugs in the perspective of Roberto Esposito’s biopolitics. New psychoactive substances are understood as technologies that – at the same time – support and subvert the logics of immunization, reestablishing the relationship between subject and object. The author juxtaposes post-Foucaultian and post-Lacanian theories of drug addiction as two possible ways of understanding the realtion between the drug and its user, both failing to account for the agency of the object itself. The excessive nature of designer drugs makes them immune to legal procedures, but also at the same time, reveals the shortcommings of critical discourse analysis. The author emphasizes the need to incorporate the accomplishments of new materialism and object-oriented philosophy into the realm of cultural studies analysis. Following Dunne’s design theory, he describes new ways of knowledge production in designer drugs communities, and examines them in the context of biohacking and bio-DIY communities. The article is aimed at establishing the biopolitical theory of drugs, that provides a better understanding for contemporary media practices around designer drugs.

Opis:
Materialism is a family of naturalistic ontologies, according to which matter is the only material of all reality. One of the modern proponents of the materialistic doctrine is an philosopher Mario Bunge. According to his version of materialism, called emergentist materialism or, shortly, „systemism”, all material entities are divided into at least five qualitatively different complementary levels: physical, chemical, biological, social and technical. Accordingly these levels correspond to several types of matter: physical, chemical, animated, social and technical. „Systemism” was inspired by the ideas of the Hungarian biologist and philosopher, Ludwig von Bertalanffy’ general system theory. „Systemism”, according to the author's intention, should avoid the simplifications of physicalism, as well as the ambiguity of dialectical materialism. The system materialism is a specific view of the world, the axis of which being emergentism. Emergentism accepts the formation of qualitatively new forms and properties as a result of interactions between the elements of a given system. The opposite concept to the concept of emergence is submergence, which means the loss of one or more of the properties of an entity or system because of its metamorphosis into something else. System materialism („Everything is related to some other things”) is a middle path between the two extreme directions: holism („Everything is related to all other things”) and atomism („Everything follows its own way”). In his explanation of systems, Bunge dissociates himself from naive reductionism („Just explain the whole with the knowledge you have about the elements”), while recommending that a strategy of moderate reductionism („You can reduce anything that just might be reduced, but without ignoring the diversity and emergence” ). In the center of the materialistic system ontology is the thesis that there are no absolutely isolated things: everything works together with (some) others. Together they form coherent systems.

This paper shows one of the important philosophical current of modern "resolution of the mind". Philosophical ideas of Locke, Hume and Hobbes were caused modern and contemporary change of paradigm from theistic to atheistic and agnostic.Theistic claims, even if were affirmed by these thinkers, were not consequences of their pfilosophical thesis. Sensualism and materialism, idnicated as natural starting point for philosophy, became ideological basis for period of radical critique of religion and atheism.

The paper’s main aim is to outline the problem of polarisation of contemporary discussion concerning the concept of origins of warfare. Basically, two leading trends can be distinguished: the first one accentuates the biological basis of human violence and places its origins deep into our evolutionary past. The second one recognises conflict as a relatively late and typically cultural phenomenon in human prehistory, which cannot be interpreted in terms of natural selection and evolution. The existence of a sharp ideological border between ‘hawks’ and ‘doves’ enables a comparison of both perspectives and facilitates the analysis of internal dynamics of their development.

The paper concerns posthuman and emancipatory contexts of Radek Rak’s novel The Tale of the Serpent’s Heart or Another Word about Jakób Szela. The story re-tells a fabled biography of Jakób Szela, the leader of the Peasant Uprising of 1846. The world created by the novel is subjected to non-human laws and relations, as well as to the feudal system. This fantastical– political juxtaposition exposes and deconstructs various inequalities sanctioning the exploitation of the peasant class. The paper points out three interpretative areas of the book, analyzed in the posthuman context. Firstly, describing the fantastical, non-anthropocentric imagination creating the novel’s world as a space of multiple relations and influences, usually non-existent in the historical works. Secondly, the paper focuses on the de-subjectification / virtualization of the subject. This particular point is discussed with references to other analyses of Rak’s novel, as the paper argues with some of the critical stances. Finally, it considers the genre’s distortion between mythical and historical which creates a space for alternative representations of the Peasant Uprising, escaping the dialectics of the “bad” and “good” legend. The paper’s closest methodological points of reference are texts of Rosi Braidotti (one of the most prominent posthuman philosophy scholars), Gilles Deleuze, and Felix Guattari. Using these tools, as well as author’s original propositions, the paper argues that the posthuman dimension of Rak’s novel expresses its critical effect, and postulates to change conservative relations in human and non-human relations.

The article is concerned with quite forgotten character and work of Pierre Jean Georges Cabanis, a physician and philosopher, but also a strong supporter of the French Revolution from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. His main scientific opus was the dissertation On the relations between the physical and moral aspects of man (Rapports du physique et du moral de l’homme) first published in 1802 and then repeatedly resumed in the 19th century, but virtually unknown in Poland. His medical points of view originally corresponded with materialistic philosophy; however, they also took into account the role of the spiritual and mental aspects of a human – this “biological, thinking mechanism”, as Cabanis thought. An important role in his book was played by theories related to sensualism. Using modern terms, Cabanis created something like physiological psychology. According to him, the body, or more precisely its organs, take part in the creation of human thoughts which seem to be only the physiological result of brain perception. This classic work was often invoked by successive generations of doctors and thinkers; it even appeared in artistic prose. Cabanis himself has had a fixed position in research and scientific studies for over two centuries.

Tekst referuje interpretację demokrytejskiego atomizmu, przedstawioną w książce francusko-niemieckiego filozofa Heinza Wismanna, Les Avatars du vide. Interpretacja ta odegrała w ostatnich latach ważną rolę dla filozofii lacanowskiej, odkąd posłużyła Barbarze Cassin do obrony jej tezy o radykalnie nie-arystotelejskim charakterze teorii Lacana. W ślad za Cassin podążyli przedstawiciele „grupy słoweńskiej”, wykorzystując nowe odczytanie Demokryta do modyfikacji własnej teorii.
This article enters into dialog with Heinz Wismann’s interpretation of the Democritean atomism presented in the book Les Avatars du Vide. Ever since Barbara Cassin referred to Wismann’s work to defend her thesis of the radically non-Aristotelian character of Lacan’s thought, Wismann’s interpretation began to play a vital role in understanding Lacanian philosophy. Cassin has been followed by members of the “Slovenian group,” who used a new reading of Democritus to modify their theory.

This article is of polemical nature. It discusses main theses of the recently published book by Monika Stobiecka: Natura artefaktu, kultura eksponatu. Projekt krytycznego muzeum archeologicznego (2020). The book presents contemporary archaeology as a very innovative discipline striving for interdisciplinarity and extending beyond traditional research issues and borders. At the same, the authoress postulates a need to reorient archaeology and create a new type of archaeological museum, namely critical museum – “museum of life”.

Although phenomenal consciousness resists explanation in physical terms, it remains an open question whether or not consciousness is an intrinsically physical phenomenon since it remains an open question whether or not conscious states are identical with physical states. This question is one of the key issues of debate in contemporary philosophy of mind. Here I survey some of the key arguments designed to show that conscious states are not physical states. I argue that materialists have no satisfactory response to those arguments.

In the article, the inventory of Antoni Malczewski’s belongings, the author of the romantic poem Maria, is published. The document was found in the archive of Jan Feliks Wilski, a nineteenth-century Varsovian notary. The only time the document was sourced was in the biography of Malczewski by Władysław Kazimierz Wójcicki in 1854 (1855). Besides presenting the document, the author collates the rediscovered list with a reading by the nineteenth-century biographer.

In this article I analyze Eric Kandel’s intellectual frameworks for psychiatry from the perspective of non-reductionist materialism. I briefly present Kandel’s program and its main features and then, after introducing various types of non-reductionist materialism, I focus on incorporation the philosophical view into a purely scientific program. The main goal of this paper is to show that a philosophical component is necessary for holistic approaches to the philosophy of mind.

Starting from the contemporary trends in biography and referring to findings in the field of anthropology of writing and new materialism, the author analyzes poetic forms created in painting studios. She considers the works of O. Boznańska, W. Weiss and T. Tchórzewski as poetic manifestations of the literary practice of everyday life, a type of poeticised documents. The presence of poetry in artists’ lives is multi-faceted: loose pages preserved in a scrapbook, entries in a journal and autonomous works printed in the press, hence their role in creative biography is different. The common ground is a syncretic perception of creativity; the preserved texts co-create a kind of artistic site where the boundaries between the publication, the exhibition and the project performance blur, requiring special editing operations.

Historical materialism is theoretical concept of Marxist view of history. It is described by K. Marx and F. Engels as a scientific, empirical hypothesis seeking economical factors, the changes in the modes of production and exchange as the ultimate cause, and the great moving power of all important historic events in the social and political development of society. According to this point of view changes in the productive forces of society (economical base) lead to the specific forms of social and political organization (social and political superstructure) and create some specific forms of social consciousness.

A contemporary so-called „New Atheism” is one of the many ways the existence of God is denied. It is based on criticism directed against the followers of various religions. This criticism focuses on the object of religion to which the cult is directed. It is mainly about illuminating the natural or social foundation of religion. To annihilate religion, atheists postulate subjecting it to dialectical criticism developed by Karl Marx. This criticism of the concept of religion, although it will not make it disappear completely, will result in a post-religious synthesis which will appear in new forms of worship and spirituality.
Współczesny ateizm nazywany „nowym” jest jedną z form negacji istnienia Boga. Polega on na krytyce kierowanej przeciwko wyznawcom różnych religii. Ta krytyka skupia się na przedmiocie religii, ku któremu skierowany jest kult. Polega ona w głównej mierze na tym, żeby naświetlić naturalny lub społeczny fundament religii. Aby doprowadzić do unicestwienia religii, ateiści postulują poddanie jej krytyce dialektycznej opracowanej przez Karola Marksa. Ta krytyka pojęcia religii, chociaż nie sprawi jej całkowitego zaniku, ale zaowocuje post-religijną syntezą w postaci nowych form kultu i duchowości.
