Na podstawie badania ankietowego przeprowadzonego w grupie 100 kleryków z dwu poznańskich seminariów Autorki artykułu próbują zrekonstruować świadomość językową młodych osób duchownych w zakresie grzecznościowych zwyczajów językowych. Z odpowiedzi wynika, że zdecydowana większość kleryków postrzega grzeczność językową jako działanie nastawione na interpretację (tak indywidualną, jak i społeczną), dobrze rozumie jej wagę w komunikacji, za rażące uważa zarówno brak grzeczności, jak i grzeczność przesadną, sztuczną. Niektórzy ankietowani używają przy tym leksyki związanej z religią (np. bliźni, brat, chrześcijański), wskazują też swego rodzaju przymus grzecznościowy – konieczność respektowania zasad poprawności politycznej. Klerycy dostrzegają różnice między grzecznością językową w swoich kontaktach z rówieśnikami a z osobami starszymi zwłaszcza w większym dystansie w stosunku do starszych. Poza wiekiem uwzględniają oni, choć rzadziej, zależność od środowiska, wychowania, poziomu dojrzałości.
Based on a questionnaire survey conducted in a group of 100 students from the two Poznań seminaries, the authors of the article are trying to reconstruct the language awareness of young clergy in the field of polite linguistic habits. The responses show that for the vast majority of clerics language politeness is perceived as an action focused on interpretation (as an individual and socially), that they well understand its importance for communication, that they consider both a lack of politeness and exaggerated, artificial politeness as improper. Some respondents use the vocabulary associated with religion (e.g. bliźni, brat, chrześcijański), and they also indicate a kind of compulsion to be polite – the need to respect the rules of political correctness. Clerics recognize the differences between the politeness of language in their dealings with their peers and with older people, especially with the larger distance in relation to the elderly. In addition, they take into account, although less frequently, age, dependence on the environment, education, level of maturity.

Wszyscy rozumiemy istotę wyrażenia mówić/powiedzieć coś dyplomatycznie. Wielki Słownik Języka Polskiego podaje dwa zasadnicze komponenty znaczeniowe tego wyrażenia: powiedzieć coś (1) grzecznie i (2) wymijająco. W artykule staram się odpowiedzieć na pytanie jakie są podstawowe mechanizmy językowe pozwalające ocenić wypowiedź jako dyplomatyczną. Mechanizmy te to z jednej strony mechanizmy grzeczności językowej: pozytywne i negatywne strategie grzecznościowe w ujęciu Brown i Levinsona oraz, z drugiej strony, swoiste gry językowe oparte na Zasadzie Kooperacji Grice’a. Dodatkowo zwracam też uwagę na inne marginalne mechanizmy, których nie da się zanalizować na podstawie grzeczności i gier językowych.
The basic meaning of the phrase speak/say something diplomatically is intuitively understood by all of us. Those intuitions are rendered in dictionaries by saying something (1) politely, and (2) evasively. The article is an attempt to answer the question what are the underlying language mechanisms that allow us to evaluate an utterance as diplomatic. Those mechanisms are on the one hand positive and negative politeness strategies as postulated by Brown & Levinson, and on the other hand, specific language games based on the Gricean Cooperative Principle. Additionally, some other marginal mechanisms involved in diplomatic speech are also analysed.

The main purpose of the article is to determine the means of functioning of the concept of language ethics in the awareness of the students in Bydgoszcz. The respondents, on the one hand, signal certain questions connected with language ethics and exchange views constituting the elements of a broadly understood language culture, on the other hand, – provide quite extensive and dependable definitions of language ethics, in which they take into consideration various contexts. The students being questioned usually associate the ethics of word with politeness, respect toward the partner of conversation, responsibility for words, dependability and honesty in language contacts. The academic youth clearly places in opposition the language ethics with such notions as a lie or linguistic manipulation, regarding them as unethical.

W artykule przedstawiono, jaki stosunek do norm grzecznościowych prezentują korektorzy i redaktorzy językowi konwersujący ze sobą w zawodowej grupie dyskusyjnej (najbardziej reprezentatywnej spośród grup skupiających redaktorów i korektorów) na portalu społecznościowym Facebook. Badany materiał pochodzi przede wszystkim z kwietnia i maja 2021 r. i obejmuje zwroty adresatywne oraz formuły powitalne — ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem formuły witam. Ponadto omówiono preferencje przedstawicieli tej grupy zawodowej dotyczące wyboru typu relacji (na ty czy na pan/pani). Analiza materiału pozwala wysnuć wniosek, że członkowie samopomocowej społeczności redaktorów i korektorów chętniej niż w innych grupach wybierają relację na pan/pani (choć nadal można obserwować przewagę relacji na ty) i najczęściej rezygnują z tradycyjnych powitań i formuł adresatywnych.
This article presents how the politeness norms are followed by proofreaders and language editors who are talking to each other in a professional discussion group (the most representative among the groups for editors and proofreaders in Poland) on the Facebook social networking site. The material comes mainly from April and May 2021 and includes addressative forms and greetings formulas — with particular emphasis on the phrase witam. Moreover, there are discussed the preferences of this professional group’s representatives regarding the choice of the type of relationship (per ty ‘you’ or per pan/pani ‘sir/madam’). The analysis of the material allows us to conclude that members of the self-help community are more likely than in other groups to choose the per pan/pani relationship (although still with the advantage of the per ty relationship) and most often give up traditional greetings and addressative formulas.

The object of this paper is politicians’ utterances and statements of the period 2011-2019, which were addressed in the media (the radio, television, and Twitter) to other politicians and journalists. This paper intends to describe 8 most common manners of depreciating political opponents and their actions. The research material under analysis shows that the language used by Polish politicians, no matter which party they are members of, becomes more and more impolite. At times, such verbal behaviours fulfi l the ludic function and are desired by the audience, listeners, or readers. However, the described phenomenon is disturbing since the media and the people who appear there form the everyday language behaviours of Poles.

This article discusses the changes occurring in the traditional model of Polish politeness. The changes were discussed based on three issues concerned with linguistic politeness of enterprises having their business profiles in social media: politeness relationships with their customers, spelling of forms of address, their formal language forms. The descriptive approach was applied to that end. It boils down to indicating changes in linguistic politeness behaviours observed in the analysed media compared to traditional patterns. The material basis comprises 1,290 posts published in the period 2014–2022 on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. The reasonability of such research is attested to by the noticeably growing impact exerted by social media on Polish language users, which will result in a transformation of the Polish politeness model.

In this article we focus on what discourse analysis brings to (im)politeness research. The paper begins by considering in more detail what is (im)politeness and why studying it in discourse is important. We then review some of the main approaches of discourse analysis that are employed in (im)politeness research. This is followed by two sample studies that illustrate some of the key challenges we face when analysing (im)politeness across different languages or different varieties of the same language. It can be seen that the shift in how (im)politeness is theorised over the past two decades has been accompanied by a move towards anchoring the analysis of (im)politeness in discourse. (Im)politeness is not something that should be attached to single utterances and its dynamic nature in discourse is what drives, in part, variability in evaluations of (im)politeness amongst users. It is also necessary to systematically examine not only whose understanding of politeness we are examining, but also on what grounds those understandings arise.

The diversity of language etiquette forms has already been noted by linguists (the author presents the evolution of the way it has been defined in their works). However, this issue does not appear very often in the works of scholars. The article aims at presenting several different types of politeness that have been defined on the basis of various different criteria. For example the substance of expression, which involves d istinguishing between two types of politeness: one expressed in language and the other expressed by non-linguistic means. Another criterion refers to social commonness and according to this criterion we can distinguish between elementary politeness, courtesy and formal etiquette. Diversity of language etiquette can be regarded as resulting form the pragmatic features of a speaker. Culture-based differentiation enables us to talk about ‘traditional’ and ‘new’ politeness. According to the author, teaching different types of language etiquette is an important part of teaching Polish as a foreign language.

The main aim of this paper is to present the various approaches to politeness research which have been documented by researchers from all over the word in last fifty years. In the first part of the article the author compares the most well-known and influential theories of politeness. Then the critique of these approaches is presented in details. In the next step the author examines new theories that arise after the discussion. These approaches are called postmodern and discursive. Part three of the paper focus on the concepts that presents different idea than postmodern or discursive paradigm. In the last part the author gives examples of the newest approaches to the research that studied linguistic politeness and also presents the impact these may have on Polish language glottodidactics.
Głównym celem artykułu jest przedstawienie ewolucji teorii grzeczności językowej na przestrzeni ostatnich pięćdziesięciu lat. W pierwszej części zestawiono ze sobą najważniejsze założenia trzech klasycznych teorii grzeczności językowej. W kolejnym kroku dokładnie opisano krytykę tych pierwszych podejść oraz zaprezentowano teorie, które powstały na gruncie tej dyskusji. Nazwano je postmodernistycznymi i dyskursywnymi. Cześć trzecia koncentruje się na przywołaniu nazwisk badaczy, którzy wychodzą poza paradygmat postmodernistyczny i dyskursywny. W czwartej części przywołano najnowsze podejścia do badań nad grzecznością językową i przedstawiono, jaki wpływ mają one na badania w obszarze glottodydaktyki polonistycznej.

The article is a study of politeness formulae retained in the eighteenth-century epistolography expressing certain feelings and attitudes of the sender towards the addressee, namely: good will (z prawdziwym afektem), faithfulness (z należytą obserwancją), gratefulness (z nieskończoną rekognicją), duty (z niewzruszoną obligacją), obedience (z najgłębszą submisją). One can treat them as one common category of etiquette because of their approximate semantic value, common pragmatic aim, very similar formal structure and the same final location in the epistolary text. The analysis was based on 305 original, handwritten and unpublished eighteenth-century letters written by several dozens of noblemen. The presented formulae appeared mainly in contacts between the representatives of the aristocracy and the nobility.

The aim of this article is to analyse the components of the additional notes contained in Polish language messages sent on postcards in the second half of the 20th century and at the beginning of the 21st century. The conducted examination is intended to identify the elements constituting the structure of the additional notes (i.e. the speech acts used most commonly there) and to determine the functions fulfilled by the individual components of the postscript. The stimulus for taking up this type of investigations was the fact that no research on correspondence sent on postcards had been carried out before. Overall, the analysis covered more than 2,600 postscripts separated from postcard messages. The study proves that constative statements as well as initiative and reactive speech acts are frequently found in the additional notes. It also points to the numerous functions the postscript or its individual components might play in a postcard letter. The polite and phatic functions come to the foreground, but the informative and emotional functions are also among the important ones.

Etykieta językowa stanowi ważną część etykiety ogólnej. Tworzy katalog przyjętych w danej kulturze i w określonym społeczeństwie wzorów językowych zachowań grzecznościowych, przyporządkowanych konkretnym sytuacjom pragmatycznym. Etykieta językowa, także wobec osób z niepełnosprawnością, to wycinek grzeczności językowej, która powinna obowiązywać i dotyczyć każdego użytkownika języka. Jako przestrzeń badań jest ważna i potrzebna dlatego, że może stać czynnikiem istotnie oddziałującym na międzyludzką komunikację.

Linguistic label, also for people with disabilities, to a section of language courtesy that should apply to every language user. As important and needed, it can become a significant interpersonal communication.

Celem artykułu jest ukazanie silnego poczucia wspólnoty pomiędzy biegaczami. O życzliwych relacjach świadczą akty grzecznościowe, które występują w komunikacji osób uprawiających ten sport. Analizowany materiał pochodzi z portalu społecznościowego Facebook, za pośrednictwem którego biegacze przekazują sobie informacje dotyczące zawodów sportowych czy też wspólnych treningów. W artykule zostały zanalizowane wybrane wpisy będące przykładami aktów grzecznościowych, takich jak: powitania i pożegnania, zaproszenia, deklarowanie pomocy, odmowy, prośby i rady, wspieranie i gratulowanie oraz życzenia.
The aim of the article is to show a strong sense of community between runners. About kindly relationships witness acts of politeness, that occur in the communication of people practicing this sport. The analyzed material comes from the social networking site Facebook, through which runners inform about competitions or trainings. The article analyzed posts include examples of acts of politeness, such as: greetings and farewells, invitations, declaring the help, refusal, requests and advice, declaring to aid, congratulations and wishes.

Opis:
The purpose of the article is the analysis of greeting formulas in emails written by teachers to parents. The linguistic material is based on 513 email messages sent to parents by means of an online parent portal (e-dziennik). The messages in question were sent by teachers representing a number of schools in Lesser Poland Province. The formal relationship between the participants of the communication and the written form of the exchanges clearly pertains to the traditional formality of the situation; as a result, expectations are raised in terms of the official style of utterances produced under these circumstances. The analysis of the obtained material indicates that greeting formulas used in emails diverge significantly from those used in official paper-based correspondence. Traditional formulas such as Szanowni Państwo (Dear Sir/Madame, Dear Sirs) are clearly replaced by formulas originating from direct verbal communication (Dzień dobry, Witam). There is an apparent tendency to become familiar with recipients by using emoticons or the language formulas present in private correspondence between people who have a close relationship. In addition to the lack of text segmentation, the overall linguistic layout and spelling strategies that prevail in both greeting formulas and the entire body of letters indicate a negligent attitude in terms of text layout.  
Celem artykułu jest analiza formuł powitalnych w listach elektronicznych nauczycieli do rodziców. Bazę materiałową stanowi 513 e-maili kierowanych przez nauczycieli wybranych szkół w południowej Polsce do rodziców za pośrednictwem dzienników elektronicznych. Formalny typ relacji między uczestnikami komunikacji oraz pisemna forma komunikatu stanowią tradycyjnie jaskrawy wykładnik oficjalności sytuacji i – co za tym idzie – powodują oczekiwanie oficjalnego stylu komunikatu powstającego w takiej sytuacji. Analiza materiału pokazuje, że formuły inicjalne listów elektronicznych znacząco odbiegają od grzecznościowych form powitalnych stosowanych w oficjalnej korespondencji papierowej. Nad tradycyjnym Szanowni Państwo wyraźnie dominują formuły zaczerpnięte z bezpośredniej komunikacji ustnej (Dzień dobry, Witam). Daje się zauważyć skłonność do przełamywania dystansu w postaci stosowania zwrotów do adresata, charakterystycznych dla korespondencji prywatnej między osobami będącymi w bliskiej relacji uczuciowej czy używania emotikonów. Kształt językowy i ortograficzny znacznej części formuł inicjalnych (ale i całości listów) oraz brak segmentacji tekstów świadczą o braku dbałości o graficzną stronę wiadomości.
