The article focuses on interior design from the first half of the 1950s. The interior spaces realized at that time in Poland elude unambiguous classifications, both in terms of formal and ideological aspects. I propose to look at the interiors from this time not in terms of style (difficult, complex, hybrid), but in a broader sense, as a political, socio-cultural phenomenon. The interiors were supposed to favor social modernization (assumed in the communist project), especially the idea of promotion and changing class habitus. They precisely modeled new forms of social life (cultural spaces), as well as family life, as they defined the way of eating, “being” (gastronomic interiors), spending free time and holidays. The leap into modernity was particularly noticeable in the architecture and interiors with which everyone interacted on a daily basis. Indicating the participation of interiors in the multifaceted modernization process can make us realize the complexity of the post-war reality, including the interior design from the first half of the 1950s, which was related to many spheres of social and cultural life.

W powojennej Polsce do roku 1989 odbyło się kilkadziesiąt wystaw prezentujących meble i architekturę wnętrz. Poszczególne pokazy skupiały jak w soczewce tendencje obecne w polskim wzornictwie; stanowiły arenę wymiany myśli środowiska projektantów i producentów oraz dawały Polakom możliwość zapoznania się z zagraniczną produkcją przemysłową. Komunikat budowany przez organizatorów wystaw i rodzaje narracji tworzone wokół tych wydarzeń są przedmiotem niniejszego artykułu, a jego celem jest ukazanie strategii wystawienniczych różnych podmiotów. Wprowadzony podział wyróżnia cztery typy wystaw: pokazy-jubileusze, prezentacje konkursowe, pokazy prac pracowników i studentów organizowane przez uczelnie wyższe, cykliczne prezentacje branży meblarskiej na Międzynarodowych Targach Poznańskich. Innego rodzaju podział wystawiennictwa meblowego w okresie PRL polega na wyszczególnieniu pokazów o charakterze artystycznym i społecznym. W celu bliższej analizy wybrano trzy dobrze udokumentowane wystawy wzornictwa polskiego oraz dwie grupy ekspozycji: te, których wspólnym mianownikiem jest miejsce prezentowania obiektów, czyli małe mieszkania w blokach, oraz wystawy wzornictwa zagranicznego.
Until 1989, in post-war Poland, several dozen exhibitions presenting furniture and interior design took place. Individual shows focused, as if in a lens, the trends present in Polish design; they were an arena for exchanging ideas between designers and producers, and they gave Poles the opportunity to learn about foreign industrial production. The message prepared by exhibition organizers and the types of narratives created around these events are the subject of this article, and its purpose is to show the exhibition strategies of various entities. The introduced division distinguishes four types of exhibitions: jubilee shows, competition presentations, shows of employees and students’ works organized by universities, cyclical presentations of the furniture industry at the Poznań International Fair. Another type of division of furniture exhibitions in the communist period can be made while distinguishing artistic and social shows. For a deeper analysis, three well-documented exhibitions of Polish design and two groups of shows were selected: those which common denominator is the place where objects were presented, i.e. small apartments in blocks of flats, and exhibitions of foreign design.

Artykuł stanowi kontynuację serii prezentującej efekty badań naukowo-artystycznych dotyczących odczytywania przestrzeni dostrzeżonych w naturze. Teoretyczne rozważania przedstawione w poprzednich numerach zostały przeniesione na działania twórcze – projekty architektury wnętrz wcielające zasady biofilii, które powstały w wyniku zastosowania trzech metod intertekstualnej interpretacji natury: naśladowania formy (nawiązania do wyglądu zewnętrznego), naśladowania zasady działania oraz zaprzeczenia (jednoczesnego nawiązania i podważenia cech immanentnych obiektowi inspiracji). Zaprezentowana została droga projektowa uwzględniająca różne środki artystyczne. Przestrzenie odnalezione w krajobrazie stanowią instalacje, które mogą stać się podstawą projektu architektury wnętrza mieszkalnego, jak również użytkowego.
The article is a continuation of a series presenting the results of scientific and artistic research on the reading of spaces perceived in nature. The theoretical considerations expounded in the previous issues have been transferred to creative activities: interior design incorporating the principles of biophilia, which resulted from the application of three methods of intertextual interpretation of nature: imitation of the form (alluding to the external appearance), mimicking of the principle of operation, and negation (alluding to immanent features of the object of inspiration and undermining them at the same time). A design path encompassing various artistic means is presented. The spaces found in the landscape are installations that can become the basis for the design of residential and utility interior architecture.

W tekście przedstawiono propozycję kodeksu etyki zawodowej architekta wnętrz sformułowaną w dwóch wariantach. Treść kodeksowych zapisów odzwierciedla zarówno etyczne powinności architekta wnętrz, jak i szeroko pojęte ideały aspiracyjne. Powstałe w ten sposób dwa warianty kodeksu uwypuklają deontologiczny wymiar etyki zawodowej oraz aspiracyjne dążenia architekta. Autorka artykułu prezentuje założenia teoretyczne proponowanego kodeksu, omawia proces i metody tworzenia kodeksu oraz analizuje jego główne problemy treściowe i konstrukcyjne.
The article presents two versions of a proposal of a code of professional of ethics for interior architects. The code’s articles reflect both ethical obligations as well as broadly understood aspirational ideals. The two versions of the code emphasize respectively the deontological dimension of professional ethics and the architect’s aspirations. Monika Małek-Orłowska discusses the theoretical assumptions of the proposed code and the methods used in its development. She also addresses the key problems related to its form and content.

In the article there has been presented the alternative of elevation - decorative solutions for the natural stone. Presented of imitation of panel present in interior of accommodation equal as well as on external elevations. Finishing material, discussed in the article, which faithfully imitates stone, bind, clay etc. is extremely resistant to unfavorable weather conditions and UV radiation. It creates an opportunity to fix panels inside and outside buildings. Thus it is a perfect solution to make quick and solid covers which are stylish at the same time.

Zaprezentowano autorski pomysł ceramicznego systemu modułowego. Projekt wykonano dla konkretnego wnętrza sakralnego w celu poprawy własności akustycznych i wizualnych. W ramach systemu zaprojektowano dwanaście modułów o własnościach akustycznych odpowiednio odbijających, rozpraszających i pochłaniających dźwięk. Modułowy system ceramiczny stanowi spójną koncepcję plastyczną, zapewniającą możliwość płynnego przejścia w obrębie systemu pomiędzy kształtkami o różnych własnościach akustycznych. Charakter projektowanego systemu ceramicznego został dostosowany do sakralnego wnętrza, przyjmując za motyw płomień. W pracy przedstawiono proces projektowania systemu, począwszy od badań akustycznych, przez linearny projekt, uszczegółowienie koncepcji, wykonanie modeli, aż po całościowy projekt wnętrza.
The paper presents the authors’ own idea of a module ceramic system. The design was prepared for a specific sacred interior in order to improve acoustic and visual properties. The system includes twelve modules with sound reflective, diffusive and absorptive acoustic properties, respectively. A module ceramic system is a consistent artistic concept which ensures a fluent transition within the system between its modules with different acoustic properties. The character of the designed acoustic system was adjusted to the sacred interior with a flame as its motive. The paper presents the designed system, from acoustic investigations, to the linear design, details of the concept, and preparations of modules to the complete design of the interior.

This text concerns itself with Polish design and its criticism in the period of socialist realism (1949/50–1955). The title refers to a terminological proposal by Janusz Bogucki who looked for new terms for his work in the new system. The division into ‘pure’ and ‘usable’ arts was considered as an anachronism in socialism in which all artistic fields were to fulfil social functions. As optimal, the critic considered a division of arts into the ‘imaging’ (painting, sculpture, and graphic) and ‘formative’ (shaping human surroundings and public space – architecture, decoration and interior fittings, and objects of everyday usage). An intermediate ‘semi-imaging’ form was, for example, represented with a fabric or scenography. Bogucki defined the realism of a masterpiece as something that reflects reality by the use of means other than an image – it shapes and expresses reality. By avoiding unwanted associations with functionalism or constructivism, he showed ‘realistic’ features of objects and things: perspicuity, simplicity of composition, purposefulness and the appropriate usage of material and tools, breaking away from the pre-war ornamentation and avant-garde restraint of shapes. Masterpieces of ‘formative’ art were to fulfil the postulate of a national form; hence, the inspiration with a native tradition, folk art and handcraft was recommended. Crucial propagandistic slogans concerned popularization and ‘democratization’ of art connected with both creation and reception; industrial production pursuant to the models of professional artists as well as the working class, and folk and teen ‘collectives’ managed by them. Chosen institutions served popularization and democratization of socialist art. The 1952 Exhibition of Interior Architecture and Decorative Art and especially the criticism linked with it, regarding the assumptions of socialist realism and gradual abandoning the criteria of the doctrine from around 1954, are presented in this text. Reckoning with the method: during the public thaw (1956–1957), when categories of realism and national form were replaced with the imperative of modernity, constitutes a recapitulation.

We wnętrzach sakralnych światło jest budulcem współtworzącym formę i nastrój świątyni. Jednocześnie jest materią ulotną i podlegającą nieustającym zmianom. Iluminacja we wnętrzu świątyni pełni nie tylko funkcję użytkową i estetyczną, odcina od zewnętrznego świata i tworzy nastrój, ale przede wszystkim kieruje uwagę na najważniejsze miejsce w kościele – ołtarz. We wszystkich epokach historycznych przypisywano światłu w kościołach szczególne znaczenie. Dziś, gdy czynnik wizualny zdominował tradycyjne, bogate w treści elementy narracyjne, światło pozostało jednym z ostatnich kreatorów sakralności miejsc kultu.
In sacral interiors light is a material that participates in the creation of the form and atmosphere of the temple. Simultaneously, it is an ephemeral material, subject to constant fluctuations. Illumination inside a temple fulfils a function which is not only practical and aesthetic; not only does it separate from the external world and create special atmosphere, but most of all it directs attention to the most important place in the church – the altar. In all historical periods special meaning was attached to light in churches. Today, when the visual factor has dominated the traditional narrative elements rich in contents, light has remained one of the last creators of sacredness in places of worship.

By directing local development and that of the entire settlement network, construction controls to a greater or lesser extent the development of all areas of economic life, and in consequence society’s level of civilization. Urban planning, architecture, landscape architecture and interior design shape our personality and culture of being. Spatial organization, architectural form, spatial functional programming, and above all the beauty and aesthetics of the built environment, have an impact on individual and social satisfaction.

Proces kształcenia przyszłych architektów na Wydziale Architektury Politechniki Śląskiej oparty jest na tematach projektowych, które realizowane są w ramach współpracy naukowo-badawczej z podmiotami zewnętrznymi. Research-based design, czyli projektowanie oparte na badaniach naukowych, to proces innowacyjny zmierzający w efekcie do opracowania doskonałego projektu, opartego na wiedzy projektantów o użytkownikach. W artykule zaprezentowano przykład takiej współpracy w zakresie dwóch projektów realizowanych w 2018 oraz 2020 roku dla Wojewódzkiego Szpitala Specjalistycznego nr 3 w Rybniku. Współpraca dotyczyła projektów wnętrz oraz systemu komunikacji wizualnej oddziału pediatrii oraz oddziału onkologii tego szpitala. W obu tematach założono, że objęta opracowaniem przestrzeń oddziałów ma poprawić komfort pacjentów i realizować założenia tzw. środowiska terapeutycznego [3]. W ramach dwóch projektów zostały przeprowadzone konkursy studenckie na projekty dla obu oddziałów. Nagrodzony projekt dla oddziału pediatrii został zrealizowany w 2019 roku, natomiast dla oddziału onkologii konkurs studencki rozstrzygnięto w 2020 roku i jest planowany do realizacji.
Overview of the design process and selected solutions. The process of education of future architects at the Faculty of Architecture at the Silesian University of Technology (Politechnika Śląska) is based on real-life design projects. They are implemented within the framework of research collaboration with external entities. The so-called research-based design is an innovative process aiming to develop a perfect design which is based on the designers’ knowledge of the users. The article presents an example of the collaboration within the scope of two research projects implemented in 2018 and 2020 for the Voivodeship Specialist Hospital no. 3 in the city of Rybnik. Both projects were concerned with the design of the interiors and the system of visual communication in the Ward of Paediatrics and Ward of Oncology in the above-mentioned hospital. The assumption of both designs was that the space of the wards should meet the requirements of the healing environment. Contests for the students’ best designs of the hospital wards were held. The design for the Ward of Paediatrics, which was awarded the First Prize, was implemented in 2019, whereas the winning design in the contest for the Ward of Oncology was announced in 2020 and is going to be implemented.

Celem niniejszego tekstu jest prześledzenie dyskursu dotyczącego aranżacji i wyposażenia polskich wnętrz mieszkalnych lat 70. i 80. XX w. oraz okresu transformacji ustrojowej, będącego wyrazem rozczarowania modernistyczną architekturą mieszkalną oraz jej dotychczasową estetyką. Społeczna potrzeba zmian w aranżacji i wyposażeniu wnętrz miała służyć ich indywidualizacji i kwestionowała uniwersalne wartości oficjalnego poradnictwa odnoszące się przede wszystkim do racjonalnego i funkcjonalnego wykorzystania domowej przestrzeni. Przedmiotem studium jest analiza praktyk związanych z wykończeniem wnętrz (wprowadzaniem łuków, boazeryjnych okładzin) oraz z ich wyposażaniem w sprzęty dawne (zarówno antyki, jak i tzw. starocie). Praktyki te znalazły odzwierciedlenie, a zarazem zostały historycznie udokumentowane w specjalistycznej prasie dotyczącej aranżacji wnętrz (m.in. „Mój Dom”, „Dom” – dodatek do „Architektury”), a także w publikowanych poradnikach i zawartej w nich ikonografii. Z ich analizy wyłania się obraz mieszkań poddawanych rekompozycji w duchu postaw definiowanych jako antymodernistyczne oraz estetyki retro opartej na kulturze pamięci.
The aim of this essay is to trace the discourse concerning the arrangement and furnishing of residential interiors in Poland in the 1970s and 1980s and the period of systemic transformation, which arose from the disillusionment with Modernist residential architecture and the earlier aesthetics of those interiors. The social need for changes in the arrangement and furnishing of interiors was to serve their individualisation; it questioned the universal values of official advice relating primarily to the rational and functional use of domestic space. The subject of the study is the analysis of practices related to interior decoration (the introduction of arches or wainscoting) and the use of old, antique and retro furniture. These practices are reflected and historically documented in the specialist press on interior design (including “Mój Dom” and “Dom” – a supplement to “Architektura”), as well as in published handbooks and the iconography contained therein. What emerges from their analysis is a picture of dwellings undergoing a re-composition in the spirit of attitudes defined as anti-Modernist and of a retro aesthetic based on the culture of memory.

W artykule przedstawiono badania czasu pogłosu wnętrza kaplicy znajdującej się w placówce opiekuńczej Caritas Archidiecezji Warszawskiej (dawny pałac Kazanowskich). Kaplica, ze względu na unikatowy zespół siedemnastowiecznych polichromii jest cennym zabytkiem. Celem przeprowadzonych badań było ustalenie warunków pogłosowych panujących we wnętrzu kaplicy, co może być pomocne w ustaleniu sposobów jej przyszłej eksploatacji. Pomiary czasu pogłosu prowadzone były metodą zanikową przy wykorzystaniu źródła dźwięku generującego szum różowy. Czas pogłosu pustego wnętrza wyniósł 2,3 s (2 s dla 500 Hz). Optymalny czas pogłosu wnętrza zależy od rodzaju propagowanego dźwięku (muzyka, mowa). Dla rozpatrywanego wnętrza powinien być krótszy. Wypełnienie wnętrza słuchaczami i wyposażeniem wpłynie pozytywnie na jego skrócenie.
The paper presents acoustic investigations of the chapel placed in care facility of the Caritas of the Warsaw Archdiocese (Kazanowski’s former palace). Chapel, due to 17th century unique collection of the polychromes, is valuable historical treasure. Aim of measurements was determining acoustic parameters of chapel’s interior. It might be helpful in establishing exploitation ways in the future. Measurements were done with using decay method and sound source generating pink noise. Reverberation time for empty interior was 2.3 s (2 s for 500 Hz). Optimum reverberation time for interior depends on kind of propagating sound (music, speech). For considering interior reverberation time should be shorter. Interior’s filling by listeners will have positive effect on reverberation time by his shortening.

The COVID-19 virus, which took over the year 2020, introduced significant changes in people's behaviour, and thus has had and still has an impact on the shaping and reception of space. The ubiquitous plexiglass partitions, social distance determined by the range of infectious particles and the prohibition of meetings were the main factors of isolation leading sometimes to social phobia. On the other hand, enforced retreat had its advantages, such as slowing down life and strengthening ties among loved ones. It is difficult to talk about the post-COVID era today, when the virus continues to control the lives of millions and there is no end in sight. However, the impact of the pandemic on human space - especially the closest one - present and future (post-Covid) - is already visible. It is related to the dissonance that has arisen between the quality of space and the conflicting emotions and needs of isolated people, such as fear of people and the need for contact, digitization of relationships and the need for intimacy, the need for open space and privacy. This discrepancy prompts interior designers to revise their current approach to designing residential space (currently overused) and to search for new design paths. One of such paths will be described, including the original choice of space features, corresponding to the needs of a modern user. The article was written as part of the research task "Found in the landscape - inconspicuous / desired - imagined spaces".  
Artykuł napisany w ramach zadania badawczego „Odnalezione w krajobrazie – niepozorne / upragnione – przestrzenie wyobrażone” dotyczy przestrzeni mieszkalnej, na którą największy wpływ miała pandemia COVID-19. Scharakteryzowane w nim zostały negatywne skutki zamknięcia i izolacji, dla których rozwiązaniem może być projektowanie biofiliczne. Ukazane zostały podobieństwa pomiędzy wzorcami biofilii a nastawioną na kontakt z przyrodą estetyką japońską. Podane zostały przykłady architektury pozytywnie oddziałującej na użytkownika dzięki związkom z naturą. Problem ten został zbadany na podstawie publikacji naukowych oraz analizy projektów, w tym także studyjnych.

Artykuł dotyczy problemów związanych z kształtowaniem jednorodzinnych domów wolnostojących w przestrzeniach miejskich gdzie dom – otoczenie – wnętrze stanowią triadę wzajemnych powiązań funkcjonalno-przestrzennych związanych z jakością zdrowego i zrównoważonego środowiska mieszkaniowego człowieka. Autor przedstawia założenia ideowe związane z poszukiwaniem humanistycznych współczesnych form zamieszkania w silnych relacjach z naturą. "Dom w krajobrazie" – taki temat otrzymali studenci Wydziału Architektury Politechniki Krakowskiej w Katedrze Kształtowania Środowiska Mieszkaniowego. Celem było między innymi poszukiwanie niekonwencjonalnych wizji i oryginalnych rozwiązań funkcjonalno-przestrzennych domów na miarę możliwości technologicznych drugiej dekady dwudziestego pierwszego wieku. Artykuł prezentuje piętnaście najlepszych nagrodzonych studenckich projektów wolnostojących domów mieszkalnych. Projekty zawierają indywidualne kreacje kształtowania przestrzeni zamieszkania człowieka, a także poszukiwania związków architektury jednorodzinnej z różnorodnym otoczeniem, szczególnie krajobrazowym. Prezentowane domy w krajobrazie realizują marzenia do zamieszkania w środowisku pięknym w harmonii z zielonym otoczeniem – naturą.
The article focuses on issues connected with shaping one-family detached houses in urban spaces, where house – surroundings – interior constitute a triad of mutual functional and spatial relations connected with the quality of a healthy and sustainable housing environment of man. The author presents the conceptual assumptions relating to searching for contemporary humanistic forms of occupying a residence in close relations with nature. "House in Landscape" – this was a topic given to students of the Faculty of Architecture of the Cracow University of Silesia in the Chair of Housing Environment. The objective was, without limitations, to search for unconventional visions and original functional and spatial solutions of houses that would correspond to the technological opportunities of the second decade of the 21st century. The article presents fifteen best awarded designs of residential detached houses, developed by students. The designs contain individual creations of shaping residential space of man, as well as searching for relations of one-family architecture with various types of surroundings, especially with landscape. The presented houses in landscape constitute a fulfilled dream to live in a beautiful environment, in harmony with green surroundings – nature.
