Opis:
The presented visitation of the church of Kosów conducted at the end of the 18th century gives us the information about the administration, pastoral ministry and the emoluments of the parish church in Kosów located in the Eastern Borderlands in the Old Polish Period. It also reveals signifi cant fi gures of political and social life of the time. Its most valuable part contains data referring to the visited parish dedicated to the Holy Trinity and the Holy Cross in Kosów (Poleski) collected by Rev. Jan Nepomucen Kadłubowski; the information ranges from the smallest details or objects to religious buildings (with their equipment and vestments used for worship), residential buildings and outbuildings. The visitation also shows concern for the moral state, material goods of the parish and the order of the liturgy celebrated in the parish church in Kosów.

History of the Catholic Church in Sweden
female religious orders in Swedish
nuns in a postindustrial society
Opis:
Among the many threads of social life in Sweden there is one that not so commonly known, almost imperceptible current in the community of the Catholic Church. It concerns the process of rebirth or the creation of new female orders or female protestant ecumenical societies with similar goals and aims. This phenomenon has a broad and interesting sociological and psychological background. The migration phenomenon researcher is here fascinated by the fact that in a country with a highly developed emancipation and feministic awareness, where the women are perfect models of liberation, more and more there are cases of women’s self fulfillment in a completely different way of life. The rebirth of female religious orders is a sign of the times in a welfare society. It points to the truth that the material and social structures do not provide the modern woman with a possibility to fulfillment of her most inner human wishes.

A salient feature of the cultural space of Upper Silesia has always been the religion and faith of its inhabitants. During the Silesian Uprisings and the Upper Silesian plebiscite, all parties to the conflict invoked religious values in various ways. Political arguments were often presented in the form of notions, ideas or symbols derived from religious tradition. This phenomenon, called the sacralisation of political discourse, was an abundant one. This was because the participants of the political dispute in Upper Silesia in the period 1918–1922 referred to highly diverse elements of the Christian religious tradition.

Opis:
On the threshold of the outbreak of the First World War Łódź was one of the biggest industrial centers of the Russian Empire. In 1911 512,5 thousand of people lived there including 267.1 thousand Catholics. For many decades of the second half of the 19th century the Catholics, who amounted to over 160 thousand by the end of the century, had only two parish churches: the church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and a filial St. Joseph church. In the period just before the outbreak of the war Łódź was not only a great workshop but also a great construction site. In this period five churches and Catholic chapels were erected or their construction was started. This construction work was stopped for the war period. The article presents the history of those constructions and the efforts preceding them.

Opis:
The corpus Christi solemnity initiated in the Catholic Church in the 13th century provided the occasion for the adoration of the Holy Sacrament. In time the solemnity was enriched with the external form of the cult, namely a procession. In the village of Spycimierz, by the River Warta, the adoration of the Host evolved into elaborated visual forms. The route of the Corpus Christi procession, apart from the typically decorated altars, was embellished with flower arrangements, which lay in the mid-lane of the road in the village. According to different accounts, the tradition of creating carpets of flowers dates back to Napoleon’s times. It is certain that it existed before World War II, and the first sources informing about it come from 1975.
Uroczystości Bożego Ciała zapoczątkowane w Kościele katolickim w XIII wieku stały się okazją do oddania czci Najświętszemu Sakramentowi. Święto z czasem zostało wzbogacone o zewnętrzną formę kultu. W leżącej nad rzeką Wartą wsi Spycimierz formy adoracji hostii rozwinięto w postaci rozbudowanej oprawy wizualnej. Trasa procesji Bożego Ciała poza typowym wystrojem ołtarzy została w całości przyozdobiona kompozycjami z kwiatów, którymi wyłożono środkowy pas drogi we wsi. Tradycja tworzenia kwietnych kobierców według przekazów ma sięgać okresu napoleońskiego. Niewątpliwie istniała już przed drugą wojną światową, a pierwsze źródła o niej informujące pochodzą z 1957 roku.

Opis:
Te article is an attempt to show the most important questions concerning the relations between General Directory for Catechesis of 1997 and Catechism of the Catholic Church of 1992.Te deep relationship between those two documents is the subject treated with a special attention. Te theme is analyzed in the view of documents’ redactinghistory and the process of renewing of catechesis in second half of XX century. Author describes the following topics: genesis of documents, their complimentary character, the importance of the Catechism for catechesis, its role in transmission of Christian doctrine and in creating local catechisms. Finally the author emphasizes that the Catechism of the Catholic Church presents itself as a synthesis of faith of the whole Church; is the symbol of the unity and purity of faith and should be perceived as the fruit of cooperation of the whole Church. Despite many advantages of Catechism, it is not free of criticism, arising discussions and polemics. Te article is ended with the reflection of the question: is the catechism sufficient to overcome the difficulties of religious formation of man today?

The article aims at the presentation of the collection of manuscripts, a hardly known collection of historical sources concerning different periods of the history of Poland. It describes in detail individual sets of manuscripts, a kind of guide concerning the inventory of the whole collection available in the Museum (a copy in the National Library of Poland). The most valua¬ble, most comprehensive and – in this context – unobvious part of the collection, consisting of the sources for the history of the January Uprising, as well as the collection of literary autographs and royal documents. The objects which are closely related to the history of the Museum are the leg¬acy of Father Józef Jarzębowski and manuscripts concerning the history of the Roman-Catholic church, documentation of the Poles’ activities during World War II, minor materials concerning the history of the Polish diaspora. It is only by recognizing the history and context of how the collection had been developed that it can be properly interpreted, individual objects included.

Opis:
The Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) was the first ecumenical council in the history of the Catholic Church, which offered a positive way of looking at other religions as such, as reflected essentially in Nostra Aetate: Declaration on the Relation of the Church to Non-Christian Religions. The radicalness of this change is demonstrated by the fact that the declaration is the only document of Vatican II, in which there are no references to the earlier teaching of the Church. Previously, the Magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church considered other religions as obstacles to salvation, which was related to a rigorist interpretation of the ancient axiom extra ecclesiam nulla salus est (no salvation outside the Church). In this regard, the post-conciliar Magisterium of the Church builds its teaching on the foundations of the doctrine of Vatican II. We can see a considerable evolution of the teaching: noticeably, it proceeds not just in one, but in many different – even very different – directions.

On the basis of the inventory of April 1939, prepared by Rev. Wincenty Franckiewicz, who gave St. Michael the Archangel’s parish church in Iwieniec to his successor Hilary Pracz – Franciscan, we gain information on a brief history of the baroque church and the Franciscan monastery in the borderlands town of Iwieniec. On this occasion, we also learn about the history of the first Roman Catholic parish of the Holy Trinity in Iwieniec, dating back to the mid-sixteenth century. After the Partitions of Poland, Tsarist Russia held dominion over these areas, and Catholic parishes in these areas were often dissolved due to repression after uprisings. Such a fate befell the parishes and churches of Iwieniec, and they were given to the Orthodox Church by the decision of the tsarist government. Only after the First World War, when Poland regained independence, the church in Iwieniec was restored to Roman Catholics. The inventory of the parish of Iwieniec presents the condition of the parish, including pastoral work, church property, the condition of religious buildings and outbuildings, the parish archive, and the activity of the parish office.

Opis:
In 1815-1864, the majority of the monasteries of the Pauline Fathers were located in the Kingdom of Poland (only the monastery in Skałka in Kraków was located outside of the Kingdom). There was a degree of antipathy tinged with hostility among the authorities of the Kingdom of Poland with regard to contemplative orders, which were regarded by them as lacking any benefits for the rest of society. Moreover, a significant part of the Church hierarchy was opposed to this type of orders. However, the Pauline Fathers ran parishes in their monasteries, which mitigated somewhat the hostility of the elites of that time towards the order. In 1818, the Pauline Fathers lost their monastery in Wieluń, followed by seven other monasteries in 1819, which were closed down by the secular and Church authorities. In the following years, nonetheless, the order reclaimed their monastery in Wielgomłyny, and in 1869, after several years of concentrated efforts, the monastery in Brdów. The Pauline monasteries were carefully controlled by the administrative and diocesan authorities. There were numerous conflicts regarding admittance to the order, as well as several instances of seizure of monastery documentation. Economic matters were also subject to state control. The Pauline Fathers played active parts in the November Uprising, donating to the uprising authorities and financing soldiers fighting in the uprising. The situation of the order deteriorated following the fall of the uprising and the introduction of the martial law by Nicholas I, which impeded mobility between particular monasteries. In addition to that, the process of admittance as well as economic issues became subject to even stricter state control. The Pauline Fathers played an important active part in the events of the years 1861-1864. They organized numerous patriotic services and congresses of the Church hierarchy. A few members of the order, moreover, functioned as chaplains for the insurgents, while others were actively engaged in the conspiracy. There are also several documented instances of armed Pauline Fathers taking part in the fight. As retribution for their activities, in 1864 the Russian authorities closed down all of their monasteries, barring the monastery in Częstochowa.

Mikaszewicze in Polesie, Poland, developed quite intensely thanks to the construction of the railway, the factory of plywood and the sawmill. This town developed after Poland regained its independence in 1918. The factories which were built there attracted a number of workers, which led to the creation of a fairly large town with a workers' settlement in 1938. Then there was a need to erect a separate parish and, given that the neighbouring villages of Rudnia, Morszczynowicze and Zaprosie accepted the Orthodox faith in the period of Poland’s captivity. Initially, the parish priests from Dawidgródek and Łachwa celebrated church services in private houses and later in the school in Mikaszewicze. In 1923, attempts were made to establish a new pastoral and parish centre. In 1927, the Ordinary of Pińsk erected a parish dedicated to the Queen of the Crown of Poland, and Rev. Paweł Stepak was appointed a parish priest. The church, built in a mixture of Gothic and Romanesque style, was consecrated on 18 July 1937 by Bishop Kazimierz Bukraba.

In 1928, society of the thriving borderland city of Baranowicze Poleskie launched a commendable initiative, the aim of which was to create another pastoral centre in that city for the local faithful of the Roman Rite. Those initiatives were made with great care for the spiritual good of the local faithful. The Executive Committee of the Church Construction appointed for that purpose in Baranowicze, then renamed the Citizens’ Committee of the Church Construction, did not take account of church law and practice in its structure. With a lay person being in charge, it did not receive approval of the ordinary of the Diocese of Pińsk, and thus efforts to build a church could not be carried out in accordance with expectations. It was not until 1934- when the parish priest and dean of Baranowicze, Rev. Jan Borysiuk, became the president of the Committee, that the relations with the diocesan ecclesiastical authority were normalised-that authority was the one which took decisions regarding the ongoing construction work in the new pastoral centre in Baranowicze. Long-term efforts on the creation of a new parish in that town resulted in erection- on 23 January 1937- the parish dedicated to Our Lady Queen of the Polish Crown and the appointment of its first parish priest Rev.Antoni Kohutnicki.

In particular he describes in details the first half of Kołakowski’s life, namely the period when he made his long journey from being communist in his student years to becoming as a young scholar the leading figure of Marxist revisionism in the late fifties and after a time a principled critic of Marxism itself and a fervent anti-communist. In many respects Kołakowski’s itinerary was not exceptional but it had at least two noteworthy characteristics. First, in opposition to quite a few other cases his way away from communism turned out to be scholarly fruitful as it resulted in an uniquely in-depth historical research covering the founders, the golden age and the breakdown of so called “scientific socialism” (his voluminous work Main Currents of Marxism remains one of the best and the most comprehensive monographs of the topic). Second, Kołakowski’s abandoning of his former Weltanschauung was followed by his discovery of religion as an extremely important part of human experience and sine qua non condition of the survival of civilization permanently menaced by barbarians. However it is to be doubt whether he may be considered as a convert or a religious thinker in the strict sense of the word since he believed in horrors of the absence of God rather than in the real presence of his in the world. As defender of transcendence and tradition Kołakowski certainly became a kind of catholic-Christian without denomination but as a critical philosopher remained at the same time highly sceptical about everything. Dreaming of solid fundamentals he was all his life an uncompromising enemy of any fundamentalism. Being nostalgic about the Absolute he was incurable antiabsolutist.
