    This paper, which proposes a historical overview, is dedicated to the notion of (air) and its lexical equivalent in the Polish language. This notion has undergone numerous changes over time; it has formed through direct human experience on the one hand and through the Christian and Slavic traditions as well as scientifi c knowledge overlapping on the other hand. This notion has always been important to the human being, it has been commonly referred to in metaphors and similes. In the historical analysis, two basic senses of powietrze (air) were taken into consideration: ‘place’ and ‘substance’. In both cases, there has always been a clearly ambivalent attitude to the human being, who sees threats on the one hand and feels that air guarantees life on the other hand.

    This article is dedicated to sound signalling in the history as one of the ways of non-verbal communication of a community. Due to the extensiveness of the subject matter, the author significantly narrowed down the analysis. She based her description on word formation issues rather than phraseological units, metaphorisations. She endeavoured to demonstrate that the point of view is also important in descriptions of phenomena bordering on language and culture. Her interests include word-formation nests of three instrument names: a bell, a trumpet, and a drum. The analysis concentrated on three fundamental functions of the enumerated instruments, functions displayed by word-formation devices: announcing, publicising information; summoning, gathering, calling people; excluding from the community. The material was collected from old and historical dictionaries, their corpora and files.

    W artykule omówiono funkcjonujące w polszczyźnie nazwy prezerwatywy. Oglądowi towarzyszy perspektywa historycznojęzykowa. Autor przedstawia proces kształtowania się bogatej synonimii nazewniczej, sięgając do leksyki należącej do różnych rejestrów (odmian) języka. W tekście przywołano ilustrakcje tekstowe z XV wieku i stuleci późniejszych. Artykuł zawiera uwagi związane z etymologią poszczególnych określeń; uwydatnia momenty zapożyczania poszczególnych form i znaczeń z języków obcych.
    In this article the author discusses different names for ‘condom’ used in the Polish language. The analysis is carried out with the use of methods characteristic of the study of language history. The author presents the development of rich nomenclature synonymy providing the lexical examples from various registers (varieties) of language. The text presents textual ex-amples from the 15th century onwards. The author discusses the etymology of particular words and emphasizes the historical contexts in which words and meanings were borrowed from foreign languages.

    The article presents 30 names of utensils for beverages (such as wine, beer, honey, water) appeared in sixteenth century written Polish language. Whole material selected from Słownik polszczyzny XVI wieku was divided into three groups: a) utensils assigned to ladle fl uids; b) utensils assigned to keep and serve fluids; c) utensils assigned to consume fluids. Moreover the article describes cultural context, etymology of words, number and examples of use.

    Nomina agentis excerpted from inventories of noble estates in the Wielkopolska region in the second half of the 18th century have been analyzed. The article presents the results of the analysis of differential entries. The analysis was based on lexicographic data gathered in historical dictionaries, dictionaries of modern Polish, and research papers devoted to analogous material from other regions. The researcher took into consideration the level of the language where differentiation of the given units wasmanifested: phonetic, lexical (genetic criteria included), morphological, semantic. An attempt was made to indicate vocabulary from the Wielkopolska region.

    The article is devoted to more comprehensive use of medieval onymic resources in research on the history of the Polish language. These materials were used in research on the phonetic development of the Polish language in its earliest period. To date, they have rarely appeared in lexical studies. The body of the oldest appellatives, reconstructed on the basis of proper names, would be a kind of lexicon (supplement) enriching and verifying Old Polish lexical material, certified in historical Polish dictionaries (also in etymological dictionaries). In this way, the expectations formulated over 100 years ago by eminent Polish linguists may be fulfilled. The complementary use of such a huge wealth of material opens up further research perspectives towards etymological, dialectological, lexical and morphological research.

    The purpose of the article is to track the etymology of the word onion and its meanings in the history of the Polish language, contemporary Polish and local dialects, paying attention to verbal, phraseological connections which it creates, proverbs and sayings, as well as derivatives of both common, as well as proper names. The purpose is also to show connections of the common name of onion and proper name Cybulski. The source material for analysis was excerpted from dictionaries of the Polish language: etymological, phraseological, onomastic, dialectal and general (explanatory). Exceptionally in case of environmental variants of the Polish language, date comes from websites.

    The aim of this paper is to reconstruct the image of the role of the city and bourgeoisie in the seventeenth century, settled in the Trilogy of Henryk Sienkiewicz. The lexemes naming the city appear in the definitions of the various terms of space, they serve its scratching. The reader, however, must complement a spatial arrangement drawn up by the storyteller. Imaging the city is followed by the exploitation of key words, which name the elements of the architecture of the city. The lexemes specifying the residents of the city, their activities and competitions appear sporadically. Quite often H. Sienkiewicz exploits anthropomorphisation efforts and metonymy, applied to the conceptual category of the city, which allows to talk about the features and social functions of the middle class. The lexicon associated with the city shows that, seen from the perspective of a noble, is a symbol of a self-sufficient residence that fills many needs of a noble: it provides money, soldiers, goods, serves as a refuge in times of war or bad weather, can resist the invaders. A noble point of view of the narrator is also expressed in attention to a defensive function of the city and the brave or cowardly attitudes of townspeople. A full overview of the lexical resource serving the definition of the city and the bourgeoisie reveals, in addition to standard and repetitive efforts also non-standard ones, breaking stereotypes, heterogeneous and difficult to classify. It is manifested in the exis by a large group of colocations, which occur at a time. Language creation of the middle class is on the one hand firmly schematic, and surprisingly unique on the other hand.

    The article contains an analysis of linguistic and stylistic distinguishing marks of headlines and ending formulas in Henryk Sienkiewicz’s letters to his wives. Particularly, the main subject of this research are expressions to the addressees and other ways of addressing the receivers of this correspondence. The material excerpt covers over 600 letters written during almost 40 years. The dominant of the collected material is expressively characterised vocabulary and names. The most important expression indexes are e.g. diminutive vocabulary, neologisms comparative and superlative adjectives as well as metaphors, epithets and borrowed vocabulary. During the research some significant features of Henryk Sienkiewicz’s writing style and his preferences in the ways of addressing and describing his wives have been indicated.

    Celem niniejszego artykułu była analiza i interpretacja zapożyczeń łacińskich i greckich, uznanychza nienormatywne na przełomie XIX i XX wieku, a reaktywowanych do polszczyznyw wieku XX. Wyekscerpowane ze Słownika warszawskiego słownictwo, nieakceptowane przezówczesną normę językową, zostało porównane z zasobem Słownika języka polskiego pod redakcjąMieczysława Szymczaka. W ten sposób wykazano, że spośród 696 wyrazów na litery A-N,oznaczonych w Słowniku warszawskim p arakwalifikatorem w postaci ostrzegawczego wykrzyknika,136 zostało reaktywowanych do polszczyzny współczesnej, z czego aż 76 stanowiąpożyczki łacińskie i greckie. Większość z nich to terminy specjalistyczne z zakresu medycyny,nauki i techniki.Przeprowadzona analiza wykazała, że obecność licznych zapożyczeń w polszczyźnie tamtegookresu znacząco wpływała na zasób słownikowy języka. Niekiedy był to wpływ ujemny,gdyż powodował nadmierną wariantywność w języku, innym razem były to wpływy dodatnie,ponieważ rozbudowywały system leksykalny języka polskiego, pozwalając, by formy zapożyczonei swojskie różnicowały się pod względem odcienia semantycznego czy przynależnoścido różnych rejestrów języka. Dzięki reaktywowaniu wielu zapożyczeń, zanegowanych przezXIX-wiecznych kodyfikatorów, zasób XX-wiecznej polszczyzny stał się bogatszy o wiele form,które mają odmienne nacechowania emocjonalne lub wyrażają bardzo precyzyjne treści.
    The objective of the article has been to analyse and interpret the borrowings from Latin andGreek, which at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries were defined as non-prescriptive (nonstandard),and which were reactivated in the 20th century. Excerpted from Słownik warszawski[Warsaw Dictionary] the vocabulary not accepted by the linguistic norm of the time has beencompared to the contents of Słownik języka polskiego [Dictionary of the Polish Language] editedby Mieczysław Szymczak. The research has revealed that 696 words in Słownik warszawski– in its part from letter A to N – were marked with an admonitory exclamation sign, but 136 outof those 696 have been reactivated to the present-day Polish language; the 76 reactivated wordsare borrowings from Latin and Greek. Most of them are terms from the sphere of medicine, scienceand technology.According to the analysis the presence of numerous borrowings in the Polish language of thattime significantly affected the vocabulary of the language. In some cases it had a negative effect, as it caused excessive variableness of the language, in other cases it had a positive effect,because thanks to it the lexical system was extended as the borrowings and the native formskept diversifying semantically or stylistically. To sum up, the reactivation of many borrowings,rejected in the 19th century, made the Polish lexis become wealthier, and thanks to it there appearedforms which are emotionally different or have a very precise meaning.

    Opis:
    Artykuł poświęcony jest przedstawianiu i pojmowaniu epidemii w dobie staro- i średniopolskiej w świetle jej nazw: mór, morowe powietrze. Podzielony został na trzy części: nazywanie, pojmowanie, wartościowanie. W pierwszej części analizie poddano występowanie leksemów mór, morowy i pochodnych w tekstach staro- i średniopolskich, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem ich łączliwości. Druga część jest próbą rekonstrukcji pojmowania epidemii przez użytkowników ówczesnego języka. Analiza pokazała, że epidemia nazywana leksemami mór, morowe powietrze i podobnymi jest ujmowana przede wszystkim w dwóch kategoriach: kategorii kary Bożej za grzechy i kategorii katastrofy, zwłaszcza katastrofy naturalnej. Jej postrzeganie jest silnie zależne od chrześcijańskiego światopoglądu i umocowane w tradycji biblijnej. W trzeciej części, poświęconej wartościowaniu epidemii, wskazano środki językowe, jakimi wyrażano negatywną ocenę epidemii w tekstach, w tym wykorzystywanie jej w porównaniach i metaforach nacechowanych aksjologicznie.
    The article is devoted to the understanding of epidemics in the Old Polish and Middle Polish periods in the light of the terms mór and morowe powietrze ‘plague’. It is divided into three parts: naming, understanding, and evaluation. The first part analyzes the occurrence of the lexemes mór and morowy, as well as their derivatives in Old Polish and Middle Polish texts, with particular emphasis on their connectivity. The second part attempts to reconstruct the understanding of epidemics by the speakers of the language at the time. The analysis has shown that an epidemic called with the lexemes mór, morowe powietrze is primarily seen in two ways: as God’s punishment for sins and as a catastrophe, especially a natural disaster. Its perception is strongly influenced by the Christian worldview and anchored in the biblical tradition. The third part, devoted to the evaluation of epidemics, indicates the linguistic means by which negative evaluation was expressed in texts, including its use in comparisons and metaphors characterized axiologically.
