W recenzji omówiona została rozprawa Andrzeja Wasilewskiego Teoria literatury Stanisława Lema. Jest to praca wyróżniająca się na tle pozostałych, przywołanych uprzednio opracowań z kilku względów. Autor, zgodnie z tytułem, koncentruje się na wybranym aspekcie intelektualnej działalności Lema, tj. teorii literatury. To z pewnością zagadnienie w refleksji nad myślowym dorobkiem Lema nowe, któremu nie poświęcano dotychczas większej uwagi. Jednakże, wbrew zapowiedziom, rozprawa sytuuje się raczej w kręgu filozofii niż teorii literatury. Niezależnie jednakże od nieporozumień oraz hermetycznego stylu wywodu omawiana monografia jest pierwszą rozprawą oferującą tak szerokie spojrzenie na zagadnienia związane z literaturą. W tym sensie rozprawa Wasilewskiego może pełnić istotną funkcję rekonesansu, ułatwiającego przyszłym badaczom rozpoznanie problematyki rozumienia literatury w eseistyce Lema.
This review focuses on the essay by Andrzej Wasilewski Teoria literatury Stanisława Lema [Stanisław Lem’s Theory of Literature]. This work differs from other previously mentioned studies for several reasons. The author focuses on a specific aspect of Lem’s intellectual work, namely, on the theory of literature. This was a new issue that had not previously been given much thought when considering Lem’s works. However, despite how it was advertised, the essay is of a philosophical nature rather than about the theory of literature. Nevertheless, despite the misunderstandings and the hermetic style of the dissertation, this monograph was the first to offer a wider view on the issues of literature. In this sense, Wasilewski’s essay may play an important role in this field and make it easier for future researchers to comprehend the issue of understanding Lem’s essays.

Dla odróżnienia, w wyższym szkolnictwie brytyjskim esej stanowi jedno z podstawowych narzędzi nauczania i sprawdzania wiedzy. W artykule przedstawiono formy wykorzystania eseju w London School of Economics. Następnie przedstawiono problemy, z którymi jest związane jego potencjalne upowszechnienie w Polsce oraz sposoby ich rozwiązania.
Service‑based modern economy requires from workers to have good communication skills, not only spoken, but also written. However, in the Polish higher education system this issue, except of theses, does not gain much attention. In contrast, essay is one of the main tools of teaching and assessment in British academia. This paper presents how essay writing is used at the London School of Economics. Afterwards the author enters into a polemic with Polish scholars who articulate problems related to its wider use in Poland and suggests few ideas of how these challenges can be addressed.

Opis:
Poetry of priests was one of the most striking phenomena of Polish literature during the twentieth century. But it is surprising that priests who wrote poetry avoid direct description of experience of the priesthood. It seems that poetry of Janusz St. Pasierb is good example of such hiding identity of priest. In this article problem priesthood in literary output of Pasierb has been examined in several contexts: autobiographical, sociological, psychological, historical, theological. In his essays Pasierb devotes much space to analyzing the situation of a priest in the modern world. However, in poetry he writes about the problem of loneliness of priest and his social exclusion. A priest is the “other” in social meaning. The reason for exclusion is ambivalence of identity: state of suspension between heaven and earth, the sacred and the profane, between what is divine and what is human. At the experience of the priest reveals a fear of split and dualistic identity and fear of incompleteness. The poet also draws attention to the experience of internal injury.

The article presents the profile of one of the forgotten and underestimated writers of Polish emigration after 1939 – Wojciech Gniatczyński. The intricate history of his life is the story of a man marked by the stigma of war and the traumatic experiences of a concentration camp, and an emigrant with unfulfilled ambitions, who disappeared into the shadows of his more combatived colleagues. Discussed briefly essay writing of Gniatczyński shows him unusual erudition and a writing workshop with great artistic, aesthetic and cognitive qualities. It gives the possibility of various interpretations and urges to multifaceted research, clearly indicating that Wojciech Gniatczyński is worth rediscover today.

Opis:
Essay writing by Bolesław Leśmian, a graduate of law, draws attention not only to the presence of the philosophical or sociological context but also the legal one while his poetry seems to be completely detached from legal practice. The issue of legal protection of values represented by life is depicted in the interpretation of two dissimilar poetic works, namely the ballad Asoka from the volume Łąka (The Meadow) and the poem starting with the words “Przez śnieżycę, co wyjąc powiększa przestworza” from Dziejba leśna (Forest Happenings). Aśoka, a monarch and lawmaker in ancient India, guaranteed it in his addresses. It paths the way to the spiritual for the hero of many legends. In the 20th century the value of human life is guarded by “a representative of law”, uniformed police officer whose very presence in the street prevents robbery. In both cases life is treated by Leśmian as the highest value motivated metaphysically, which opens the way for further reflections concerning the grandeur of law as understood by the poet as well as to the question whether the issue of connections between literature and law, already known from the research into the literary output of Franz Kafka, may help understand Bolesław Leśmian’s outlook on life.
W eseistyce Bolesława Leśmiana, absolwenta studiów prawniczych, zwraca uwagę nie tylko obecność kontekstu filozoficznego czy socjologicznego, ale także prawnego, podczas gdy jego poezja wydaje się całkowicie odległa od zagadnień prawa. W zaproponowanej w artykule interpretacji dwóch niepodobnych utworów poetyckich, ballady Asoka z tomu Łąka i wiersza o incipicie „Przez śnieżycę, co wyjąc powiększa przestworza” z tomu Dziejba leśna, ukazana zostaje kwestia prawnej ochrony wartości, jaką stanowi życie. Władca i prawodawca starożytnych Indii, Aśoka, zagwarantował ją w swoich orędziach. Bohaterowi licznych legend otwiera to drogę do tego, co duchowe. W XX wieku wartości ludzkiego życia strzeże „przedstawiciel prawa”, umundurowany policjant, którego sama obecność na ulicy udaremnia rozbój. W obu przypadkach życie traktowane jest przez Leśmiana jako najwyższa wartość, motywowana metafizycznie, co otwiera drogę do dalszych rozważań dotyczących wzniosłości prawa w rozumieniu poety, a także do pytania, czy zagadnienie związków literatury i prawa, znane z badań nad twórczością Franza Kafki, może pomóc w zrozumieniu światopoglądu Bolesława Leśmiana.

Jan Jozef Szczepanski is one of the most uncommon, postwar polish writers and publicist. His wide and rich co-operation with “Tygodnik Powszechny” and the most famous narrations such as: “The Shoes” or novel “The Polish Autumn” are strictly connected with problems like: honor, heroism and dignity of a human being. He is also known as one of the greatest continuator of Joseph Conrad’s tradition and thoughts, especially with understanding the meaning of writer’s responsibility for the world. Szczepanski has created a very special attitude – a pose of contemporaneousness witness, which brings reflections about modern morality and obligates readers to confront different values and ideas. Despite his relationship with catholic “Tygodnik Powszechny”, Szczepanski always declared, that the most important and timeless ethic is not connected with any religion, but is a total amount of all human experiences. That point of view brought the writer nearer the philosophical conception of Jaques Mounier and the idea of humanistic personalization. His publicist debut in 1946 called “The Saint against the Imperium” – a reflection about Mahatma Gandhi – was an introduction to Jan Jozef Szczepanski’s thoughts about modern saintliness without religious labels. His general idea concerned ethic and moral saintliness, without any connections with ontologic position of a person. Mahatma Gandhi’s example shown that every person in modern world could be The Saint, no matter what kind of religion or culture had represented. The Saintliness in Szczepański’s reflection was an original, moral value. That value was also very important in one of his most affecting essays “The Saint”. A history of Maria Maksymilian Kolbe – a catholic priest, who had voluntarily tendered his own life for other Auschwitz’s prisoner freedom – shown that even savaged time of war could bring a shadow of hope. Szczepanski was far from popular hagiography. As he said: “Modern, lay world probably needs saintliness more than any time before. But – I suppose – less than any time before needs hagiography” Szczepanski was trying to find a key to victory of a human morality in modern world through reflections about ethical sources of mankind. The affirmation of summum bonum exists in all religious and ethical systems, but – as the writer admitted – words are sometimes too weak to express essence of modern saintliness.

The article discusses new and republished translations of Susan Sontag’s work, recently launched by the Karakter publishing house: Regarding the Pan of Others, On Photography, and Against Interpretation and Other Essays. The article focuses on the elements of Sontag’s thought that make her a forgotten mother of feminist and gender theoreticians, as well as such influential critics as Michel Foucault and Roland Barthes. The article points out to continuations of Sontag’s thought in contemporary theoretical and social projects, and to the pertinence of her critical observations on theories based on metaphysics of presence: psychoanalysis, Marxism, or hermeneutics. The article also touches upon history of war photography and related war journalism, and upon the ambivalent quality of imaging of the misery of war. It also present historical and cultural circumstances of the development of Sontag’s thought in the intellectual milieu of New York in the 1960s. The discussion recapitulates the main statements of Sontag’s essays, relating them to a wider theoretical context, which is aimed at a reappraisal of the forgotten intelectual in the history of literature.

Prezentowany artykuł jest refleksją nad fabularyzowanym esejem Orhana Pamuka Stambuł. Wspomnienia i miasto, analizowanym w kontekście całokształtu twórczości tureckiego noblisty. Wszystkie powieści Pamuka konsekwentnie utrzymane są w nastroju nostalgii za przeszłością, poszukiwania tajemnicy, a ich równoważnym bohaterem jest przestrzeń Stambułu. W omawianym eseju sam autor definiuje melancholię, do której wciąż dyskursywnie powraca, jako hüzün – szczególny rodzaj smutku właściwy dla tureckiej kultury. Celem powyższego artykułu staje się więc próba opisu tego zjawiska z wykorzystaniem ujęcia komparatystycznego, refleksji nad doświadczaniem przeszłości we współczesnej kulturze historycznej, a także narzędzi geografii humanistycznej. Hüzün jawi się wówczas jako rodzaj melancholii miejsca, ale również szczególna forma pisma melancholijnego.
The article is a reflection on the fictionalized essay Istanbul: Memories and the City by Orhan Pamuk, which is analyzed here in the context of the entire works of the Turkish Nobel Prize winner. All Pamuk’s novel are consistently maintained in the mood of nostalgia for the past, searching for the mystery, and their protagonist is the space of Istanbul. In this essay, the author defines the melancholy, to which he discursively continually returns, as hüzün as a special kind of sadness appropriate for the Turkish culture. The purpose of this article is therefore to describe this phenomenon using comparative recognition, reflection on the experience of the past in contemporary historical culture, and also tools of humanistic geography. Hüzün then appears as a kind of melancholy of a place, but also as a special form of melancholic writing.

Autor zwraca uwagę na debatę, jaka odbyła się w Polsce z okazji wydania antologii w opracowaniu Jana Tomkowskiego, Polski esej literacki (Wrocław 2017). Przy okazji zgłasza propozycje ewentualnych uzupełnień kolejnej edycji antologii o ważne odmiany eseju: metapoetycki, etnograficzny, filozoficzny. Teksty zgromadzone w dwu kolejnych numerach „Autobiografii” z 2018 roku redaktorzy traktują jako wkład pisma w myślenie o polskim eseju.
The author draws attention to a debate which happened in Poland on an occasion of releasing an anthology Polski esej literacki (Wroclaw 2017) by Jan Tomkowski. Along the way, he also proposes supplement of a next edition by some important subgenres of essay: metapoetic, etnographic, philosophical. The texts gathered in two next issues of “Autobiography” from 2018 are treated by the authors as the journal’s input into thinking about Polish essay.

Tematem artykułu jest analiza materiału badawczego pochodzącego z uczniowskich rozprawek. Autorka rozważa sposób ujawniania się instrumentalnego i formacyjnego charakteru edukacji polonistycznej w wypowiedziach pisemnych uczniów. Analizuje leksykę wykorzystaną we wstępach wypracowań, zwłaszcza słowa kluczowe zadania. Podejmuje próbę odtworzenia językowej konceptualizacji problemu, który rozważali uczniowie na maturze próbnej z języka polskiego na poziomie podstawowym w 2021 r.: wpływ dokonywanych przez człowieka wyborów na jego życie.
The subject of the article is the analysis of the research material from the students’ essays. The author considers how the instrumetal and formative character of Polish language education is revealed in students’ essays. She analyzes the lexis used in the introductions of the essays, focusing on the key words. The author attempts to recreate the linguistic conceptualization of the problem which was considered by students on the Polish matura in 2021: the impact of choices made by a person on his/her life.

Piotr Wierzbicki’s deep interest in Chopin’s music has been revealed in his volumes of essays published since 1993. What appears to make his music writings exceptional in comparison with other Polish essays dealing with Chopin’s life and work is the prevailing concentration on particular pieces or even single performances chosen by famous pianists. Wierzbicki develops his project of extradisciplinary essayistic Chopinology that blends together the musicological knowledge, critical involvement, philosophical reflection and highly individual psychosomatic experience. Having stated a fundamental difficulty of ‘translating’ sounds into words, he tries to elaborate a ‘musical’ style and form for his writing, e.g. he includes ekphrases full of metaphors and synesthetic figures. This wide array of music-centred properties encourages readers to treat these essays as a starting point for coming up with the question of whether it is possible to differentiate a type of ‘musical’ essay.

Artykuł stanowi próbę rozpatrzenia późnego tomu eseistycznego Marii Kuncewiczowej pod tytułem Przeźrocza w kontekście pisarstwa eseistycznego widzianego przez pryzmat gender studies oraz w kontekście związków eseistyki z autobiograficznością. Projekt eseistyczny zaproponowany przez Kuncewiczową powiązany jest z rezygnacją z autobiograficzności na rzecz własnej wersji senilnego eseju kobiecego, czyli tekstu migawkowego, antyerudycyjnego, w którym dominuje specyficzna formuła metaforyzmu jako kodowania sensów metafizycznych w ramach opisywania codziennych konkretów.
The article describes the late essays by Maria Kuncewiczowa entitled Przeźrocza (Slides) in the context of the essay regarded through the prism of gender studies and in the context of the relations between essay and autobiography. The essayistic project by Kuncewiczowa is connected with abandoning the autobiographical aspect and choosing her original version of senile feminine essay understood as the sketchy, anty-erudite text, which is dominated by specific formula of metaphorism as encoding the metaphysical senses within the description of quotidian details.

Opis:
Artykuł ma charakter metatekstowego, analityczno-przeglądowego opracowania poświęconego esejowi jako autonomicznemu gatunkowi pisarstwa akademickiego. Celem tekstu jest zestawienie wyznaczników gatunkowych eseju i pokazanie możliwości wykorzystania jego elementów w kształceniu akademickim na kierunkach pedagogicznych. Chociaż esej jest sposobem wypowiadania się ściśle związanym z subiektywnością ludzkiego indywiduum, to jednak nie zwalnia autora z obowiązku komunikatywności. W pierwszej kolejności źródłem wiedzy o gatunku i jego wyznacznikach są głosy literaturoznawców – Jana Tomkowskiego i Tadeusza Sławka. Narracja eseistyczna nie jest obca pedagogom, dlatego następnie oddaję im głos, a na koniec spoglądam z perspektywy studenta, albowiem w dydaktyce akademickiej esej pełni funkcję zarówno tekstu użytkowego pisanego na potrzeby konkretnego przedmiotu, tutorialu, jak i w celach samopoznania, uruchomienia autorefleksji.
The article has the character of a metatextual, analytical and review study devoted to the essay as an autonomous genre of academic writing. The purpose of the text is to compile the genre determinants of the essay and to show the possibility of using its elements in the academic training of pedagogical majors. Although the essay is a mode of expression closely related to the subjectivity of the human individual, it does not relieve the author of the obligation to be communicative. First of all, the source of knowledge about the genre and its determinants are the voices of literary scholars – Jan Tomkowski and Tadeusz Slawek. The essay narrative is no stranger to pedagogues, so next I give them the floor and finally I look from the perspective of the student, for in academic didactics the essay serves the function of both an applied text written for the needs of a particular subject, a tutorial, and for the purpose of self-discovery, to trigger self-reflection.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to consider the relation between narrativity of autobiographical text and Kantian concept of transcendental entity. The author claims that the connection between time and identity of the subject, which is fundamental to modern autonarratives, can also function as a theoretical background in non-narrative intimate writing (e.g. an autobiographical essay). Examples of Szymutko’s and Przybylski’s works prove that selfconscious turn towards non-narrative forms of self-expression makes the Kantian concept of ego a negative, but (still) inherent waypoint. Stefan Szymutko’s Nagrobek Ciotki Cili (Aunt Cila’s Gravestone) and Ryszard Przybylski’s Uśmiech Demokryta (Democritus’ Smile) can be therefore described as quasi-autobiographies.
