Opis:
The following article examines a variety of elements concerning the influence of the English language on the vocabulary and spelling of the IRC chats in Polish and Russian. After a short presentation of the IRC service itself and the conversations made through it, a number of examples of the jargon, the youth slang, the play with spelling, and the transcription of the Cyrillic alphabet, which appear in the medium, are presented. Most of the examples serve to illustrate the influence of the English upon the Polish and the Russian languages of the IRC users. Additionally, the examples prove the author’s assumption that IRC is a medium which stimulates linguistic creativity

The present article is devoted to the translation of Russian expressive vocabulary (curses and invectives) into English. The study material was extracted from selected short stories of Vasily Shukshin and their English translations done by Robert Daglish, Holly Smith, Natasha Ward & David Iliffe, Laura Michael & John Givens, Kathleen M. Cook, George Gutsche. The goal of translating expressive vocabulary is to make it possible for the target-text reader to experience the same kind of emotions the source-text reader experiences, for it is mainly concerned with searching for structures that carry equal emotional charge as the original. The subject of analysis were the translation equivalents used by translators, which, similarly to the original units should recreate emotional and expressive charge of the original and serve a similar function.

In the modern era the use of English has become very widespread, the language being used more and more by non-native speakers in a variety of contexts. The objective of the paper is to explore the use of the English language as a second and as a foreign language by bilingual Polish-English and Hindi-English speakers in the medium of Computer Mediated Communication, represented in the following study by the social network context, in order to demonstrate differences in the use of the language by the two groups, stemming from the status of English in the two respective circles, the Outer and the Expanding. The particular aspects of analysis include the frequency of the use of English, the length of the English posts and, notably, the phenomenon of code-switching, its typology and the functions which the respective languages typically perform in the switched elements.

Po kilku dekadach stosowania terminu „globalizacja” na określenie zjawisk o charakterze przede wszystkim gospodarczym, finansowym i politycznym, warto przypomnieć sobie, że historia tego terminu sięga swoimi korzeniami do roku 1930, gdy został użyty przez Raupa dla opisu pewnej koncepcji edukacyjnej. Klasyk teorii globalizacji Anthony Giddens zdefiniował globalizację jako zintensyfikowanie stosunków społecznych o zasięgu ogólnoświatowym, łączących z sobą odległe miejsca w taki sposób, że zachodzące w nich wydarzenia lokalne kształtowane są pod wpływem wydarzeń rozgrywających się w odległości wielu kilometrów. Na pojawienie się zjawiska aneksji czy wręcz unicestwiania przez język angielski coraz to nowych obszarów dotychczas zajmowanych przez kulturę i język lokalny wskazywał już Swales, wybitny badacz gatunków naukowych języka angielskiego. Język angielski jako narzędzie globalizacji, przeczy Giddensowskiej definicji globalizacji - przynajmniej w sferze publikacji naukowych
After a few decades of using the term “globalization” to define phenomena connected with economy, finances and politics, it is worth noting that the history of the term dates back to 1930 when it was first used by Raup to describe an educational concept. The renown theoretician of globalization Anthony Giddens has defined the phenomenon as intensification of social relations at a global scope which connect places in a way that the local events happening there are shaped under the influence of events happening many kilometers away. Swales – an eminent scholar analyzing the scientific fields of the English language – has already noticed that English has annexed or even annihilated many spheres of life which were hitherto occupied by local languages. English as a tool of globalization contradicts Giddens’s definition of globalization – at least in case of academic publications.

In the present article, entitled Between Wor(l)ds... OR completely lost in translation? On contemporary “translations” of the titles of film blockbusters. From “Wirujący seks” (1987) and “Minionki” (2010-2017) to “Przełęcz ocalonych” (2016), its author – being a philologist, a linguist, a translation-studies researcher, and a regular picturegoer, takes into practical consideration selected translations (mainly from English into Polish) of several dozen film blockbusters having been produced in the last 20 years. On the basis of available resources, which are relatively few regarding the matter in question, the author makes an attempt at identifying and defining a range of formal and informal criteria in accordance with which English-language film titles are typically translated (“translated”?) into Polish, and then he tries to evaluate the adequacy of such film title translations against the original ones. The considerations are primarily made from a philological perspective (mainly lexical), including the corresponding cultural issues that might have affected the translation process. The analysis also embraces the increasingly significant commercial aspect present in the contemporary cinematography, in view of which a film these days is first of all a product that needs to be sold at a huge profit to the international clientele.

W literaturze glottodydaktycznej Franciszek Kuszel pojawia się sporadycznie jako autor rozmówek polsko-angielskich pt. Rozmowy podręczne dla podróżujących do Londynu Polaków nieumiejących zupełnie Języka Angielskiego (1857). Pozostawił po sobie także inne materiały: „Książkę Podręczną do Uczenia się Języka Angielskiego dla Uczniów Szkoły Główney w Warszawie” [1864] napisaną na potrzeby lektoratu angielskiego w Szkole Głównej Warszawskiej i powieloną metodą litograficzną, a także „Dziennik czynności osobistych od dnia 25 września 1834” – rękopiśmienne źródło informacji biograficznych. Artykuł stawia sobie dwa podstawowe cele: nakreślić biografię autora oraz dokonać analizy jego podręcznika.
In the literature on foreign language teaching Franciszek Kuszel appears sporadically as the author of a Polish-English phrasebook entitled Rozmowy podręczne dla podróżujących do Londynu Polaków nieumiejących zupełnie Języka Angielskiego (1857). There are also other extant materials: “Książka Podręczna do Uczenia się Języka Angielskiego dla Uczniów Szkoły Główney w Warszawie” [1864], written for English instruction at the Szkoła Główna Warszawska and reproduced by means of the lithographic method, and “Dziennik czynności osobistych od dnia 25 września 1834”, a manuscript source of biographical information. This article has two main purposes: to sketch the biography of the author and take his textbook under a scrutiny.

Głównym celem artykułu jest zbadanie sposobu funkcjonowania wybranych angielskich cech fonetycznych oraz inspiracji z nimi związanych w polskim punk rocku oraz usytuowanie wyników analizy w szerszym kontekście stylistycznym oraz socjolingwistycznym. Zgodnie z przyjętą tezą sposób wymowy w śpiewie może łączyć się z przekazaniem określonych – potencjalnie ewoluujących – znaczeń społecznych bądź stylistycznych, a w przypadku anglojęzycznego polskiego punk rocka znaczenia te zależne są od nurtów omawianego gatunku. Wymowa większości wykonawców charakteryzuje się wyraźnym wpływem języka polskiego i niewystylizowanym brzmieniem, a cechy cockneya kojarzone z klasycznym punkiem pojawiają się rzadko.
The paper analyzes the functioning of selected English phonetic features and inspirations related to them in Polish punk rock, and interprets the results in a broader stylistic and sociolinguistic context. It is based on the thesis that pronunciation in singing is often connected to expressing specific, potentially evolving social or stylistic meanings, and in the case of Anglophone Polish punk rock these meanings depend on trends within the genre. In most analyzed cases, English pronunciation displays a lot of interference from Polish and an unstylized sound, while features associated with Cockney are quite rare.

Many branches of science and academic disciplines such as psychology, linguistics or medicine fuel interest in developmental dyslexia by proposing a variety of theories attempting to determine what causes dyslexia and how dyslexia influences the acquisition of a foreign. For this particular reason, a foreign language teacher must not only be equipped with a sound methodological knowledge but also familiar with current approaches to dyslexia. The main tenet of this article is that dyslexia-related difficulties have a tremendous impact on second language learning, which necessitates the inclusion of specially adapted techniques and instruction.

Ekspansja nauki polskiej za granicą to znak współczesnych czasów. In-formacje o polskich czasopismach naukowych w Emerging Sources Citation Index są tego najlepszym przykładem. Pokazują wieloaspektowy charakter zachodzących zmian. Czasopisma polskie są publikowane w języku angielskim w otwartym inter-necie, coraz częściej obejmują artykuły autorów z afiliacją zagraniczną, coraz liczniej są obecne na platformie Web of Science. Redakcje czasopism i publikujący w nich autorzy dostosowują się do wymogów otoczenia i rozszerzają swoje oddziaływanie. Celem artykułu jest zasygnalizowanie zmian zachodzących w polskich czasopismach naukowych oraz przegląd informacji o polskich czasopismach w ofercie Emerging Sources Citation Index firmy Clarivate Analytics.
The foreign expansion of Polish science is a sign of modern times. The information concerning Polish scientific journals in the Emerging Sources Citation Index is the best example of this. They show the multi-faceted nature of the changes taking place. Polish journals more and more often start to publish in English on the open Internet, more and more often publish articles with cross-border affiliation, and the Web of Science platform is becoming more and more popular. Over time, both journals and the authors who publish in them adapt to the environment and expand their impact. The aim of the article is to signal the changes in Polish scientific jour-nals and present the information regarding Polish journals in the Emerging Sources Citation Index provided by Clarivate Analytics.

The paper presents a study about using Insta.Ling e-learning platform in university teaching process of English language for Biology students. The aim of this study is to estimate its effectiveness and the correlation between the number of repetitions and the number of words memorized. The total number of students involved in this research is 129 (6 student groups and in 3 academic years). They are all students of Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski University, Warsaw. The results allow to assume that Insta.Ling environment is an effective way to learn new vocabulary and regular sessions positively affect the number of vocabulary memorized.
