Opis:
In one of Tymoteusz Karpowicz's most ambitious dramaturgic attempts – Przerwa w podróży (A Stop in the Journey) – the protagonists representing the most general categories of human existence and various aspects of human activity, who are `all passengers of all means of communication', are put in the situation of existential suspense. A stop in the journey in the spatial sense makes it possible to travel into the depth of oneself, it becomes a chance to throw away all the redundancy of life and find in oneself the integral `ego', independent of functionality, that is of the roles that one has to play. The transitional reality in which the dramatis personae find themselves validates many interpretative orders, which in turn gives the characters many dimensions – they make ambiguous gestures, actions and their relations become ambiguous. A confrontation of many interpretation planes creates a polyphonic world of creative “all-possibility”, which, however, has its inner logic that is reflected in the way of presenting the protagonists and in the subsequent sequences bringing changes of arrangements and oppositions that are formed between them. The changing configurations, in which the characters look for affirmation of their existence in the relation with a partner, constitute the process of becoming mature enough – in experiencing oneself and others – to have one's own authentic consciousness; to one's humanity.

Opis:
The analyses presented in the article reverse the traditional course of studies which assume that the poetics of a dramatic text is instrumentally superior to that of the libretto. In order to adapt the hypothesis that contemporary drama is increasingly libretto-like, inserted into its structure is, excerpted by opera theatre researchers, the libretto poetics treated as a genealogical directive specific to the genre which differentiates it from the “third kind” in its classical expressions. The breakup of the basic categories constituting a drama ( character, dialogue and plot ) brings it visibly closer to the traditional operatic libretto with features characterised by Albert Gier, among others. The post-dramatic aesthetics adapted by contemporary opera and drama, which removes the character or reduces it to a voice treated merely as a medium, absolutising the way a word sounds and the poetics of a transsystemic remix all result in the emergence of a common aesthetics of the stage chimaera genre.

The purpose of this article is to show the character of death as a full-fledged hero of a literary work. The author analyzes Hofmannstahl’s dramas: The Fool and the Death, Great Salzburg’s World Theater, Chlebnikov: Death’s Bug, Krzanowski’s Death throws bones. The images of death that appear in them present it as the messenger of God and the companion of the journey to the land of the beginning. In this performance, it loses its scary features. Otherwise, the author uses folk imagery of death. Then it is endowed with human qualities – it can be deceived, though it can not be won with it.

Opis:
The article analyzes the drama Requiem dla gospodyni by Wiesław Myśliwski in the context of free indirect discourse as understood in literary criticism. The author of the article discusses the instances of this form of expression used in the utterances of Boleś, a shepherd and country madman of an unknown ontological status. She notices the problems with distinguishing between free indirect speech and the direct quoting of the late titular landlady [gospodyni] with whom Boleś established a strong bond. The author demonstrates that the shepherd plays a significant role both as a part of the storyline and a formal element because his creative capacity (building images) as well as linguistic (creating a binarrative in free direct speech) reveal his meta-dramatic character and privilege the dramatic subject.

Opis:
The article focuses on the influence of Wagnerian ideas on the concept of 19th-century Czech national opera. This can be partly explained by the fact that Czech culture was strongly connected with German culture. However, early Czech operas, and even some of Smetana’s, were quite influenced by the German singspiel — a genre with predominantly lyrical and comic elements. Their national character was manifested mainly by folk elements within the action and the music (countryside scenery, national dances, adaptations of folk melodies). The ideal of this type of national opera is Smetana’s The Bartered Bride. The same composer created a work that presents a completely different understanding of the national style and opera. In Libuše, he tried to use the Wagnerian idea of musical drama for transforming the concept of the Czech national opera. In the article, there are quotations of the composer’s statements about Libuše as a work that has a “unique importance in our [Czech] history”. Wagner’s influences are apparent on a few levels in this operatic work. The libretto is based on the mythical story about Queen Libuše, the legendary founder of Prague, and in the opera she is a symbol of the Czech nation. Wagnerian influences are found in the formal structure (unendliche Melodie), as well as in the musical language of Libuše. Smetana used a system of leitmotifs consequently, connecting them with the characters (Libuše, Přemysl) and ideas (motifs of the nation, motif of authority). Perhaps it was under the influence of the idea of Bühnenfestpiel that Smetana designed Libuše as a slavnostni zpěvohra for special celebrations in the life of the Czech nation.

Opis:
The study sketches in a general way the problem of language in Norwid's comedies. The concept of language is understood here very broadly and goes far beyond purely linguistic categories. The article discusses a number of selected issues. The first set of problems is connected with showing characters in Norwid's comedies by giving them their own kind of speech, by introducing comical “sayings” and a sort of refrains in conversations. Through characters' language Norwid assesses the 19th-century society, but also he leads the reader to much broader approaches connected with the civilization, social and cultural perspective. Another issue concerns the connection between language and the theatrical vision. It is first of all about commencement of conflicts in the dialogue, relating events, but also about analyzing the author's language as detached from the “speaking subjects”, and also about comparing Norwid's plays with the drama of the time. In the article it is pointed that in contemporary small dramas, close to the poetics of realism, Norwid concentrates on great issues of civilization. He subjects all his theatrical conception to this problem. Hence the problem appears not only in the situational dialogue, but also in the descriptive dialogue, and even in marginal texts (ones that serve showing characters' gestures and movements) Norwid's comedy differs from its Polish counterparts in richness of problems and in the synthetic assumption leading towards synthetic means of expression. Norwid finds them in the gnome, metaphor, poetical image, lyrical poem, and apart from this in extra-verbal means of expression – gesture, mime, intonation. He also differs from other dramatists in his own original conception of realism that comedy in Poland does not yet have. Norwid's theatre develops towards ever more intensive selection of words, subtle shades, calming down the pathos, and colorless informality that becomes important with parabolization of “specks”.

Opis:
This article analyses several artistically important Polish 21st-century plays, in which a character has been modelled on the person of Pope John Paul II. The works studied here are Jerzy Pilch’s Narty Ojca Świętego, Paweł Grabowski’s Dotknięci, Michał Walczak’s Człowiek z Bogiem w szafie and Artur Grabowski’s Cnoty zachodniej cywilizacji. This article aims to show not only the way the above-mentioned literary texts present the figure of the Pope, his life and works, but also his influence on the life of ordinary people. By researching John Paul II’s presence in literature, this article helps to contribute to the commemoration of the Pope Saint.

Opis:
Quintilian begins the 30th chapter of the 11th Book claiming the rules of oratory declamation are identical with the rules of word art. Pronuntiatio will be more clear if, above all, words will be spoken whole and not swallowed or omitted. According to Quintilian, well-chosen pronuntiatio is adjusted to the topic of the speech. For the most part it is driven solely by emotions and the orator’s voice rises and resounds. Voice, which is a kind of mediator between us and our audience, will reach the judges in the same shape it leaves us. Next the author of Institutio oratoria devotes a large passage to gesticulation as it complements voice and is obedient to the commands of mind. In plays written for performance on the stage the masters of oratory declamation find inspiration for expressing emotions also from the characters of a drama. This is why in tragedy Merope is sad, Medea is terrifying, Ajax is benumbed and Hercules is aggressive. In laudatory speeches, with the exception of funeral ones, the words should be flowery, magnificent and exalted in order to express thanks, encouragement etc. The funeral speeches, consolations and most of defensive court speeches are characterized by pain and humility. When we speak in senate we need to be authoritative, when in front of the people – dignified, when in private affairs – moderate. Pronuntiatio should have three qualities: it should cause good will, convince and affect, as this is how delight can be naturally evoked. Favour of the audience can be won either by praise of character, which is mysteriously revealed in the voice and gesticulation of an orator, or by the charm of style. Quintilian ends Book 11th with a remark that moderation plays the most important role. His aim is to form an orator, not a comedian. This is why he does not recommend to search for all the subtleties of gesticulation, nor to use classifications, rhythms or emotional states in the way of speaking. He is right when he criticises pronouncing words with exaggerated face expressions, distracting gesticulation and abrupt changes of tone. An orator should control his speech, aiming to achieve elegance and style and yet not to lose the authority of a noble and dignified man.

Marek Hendrykowski’s essay presents the importance of Janusz Morgenstern’s early short film Radishes made after Stalin’s death, in 1954 as a student work produced by Film School in Łódź. The main character, old worker Gruliński loses his clear hopes and human illusions. The pesimistic conclusion is closed further by the simultaneous description of the hero’s social image within a discourse of origins and the sacred which evacuates analysis of class conflict and sociological approach in the narrative of an “ordinary good man” brutally disturbed in his desires and works by the irruption and power of an omnipotent destructive stalinist “red tape” bureaucracy. The poetics of Radishes is deeply influenced by the style of an Italian neorealism, first of all by its famous masterpiece, Vittorio De Sica’s Umberto D. (1952).
