In this paper, the author puts forward the following general hypotheses as a starting point for further enquiry: 1. Definitions and sets of definitions are developed on the basis of the results of exploration of linguistic reality and therefore they constitute meta-statements about certain fragments of linguistic reality; 2. Various types of definitions emphasize different aspects of linguistic reality and examine the reality from different perspectives; 3. Definitions and sets of definitions constitute cognitive tools used in any research endeavour; 4. Definitions and sets of definitions enable one to verify consistency across various scientific concepts. With this general background in mind, the author poses a specific question, namely whether it is possible to, first, synthesize various types of definitions and, second, to introduce such a synthetic definition into a new explanatory dictionary of the Polish language. The author argues that the proposed synthetic definition should be based on classical (taxonomic) definitions, cognitive definitions (used extensively by ethno- linguists), and contextual definitions. Also, the synthesis of three types of data, that is, systemic, textual and survey data, should provide a resource base for the development of the synthetic definition. The author argues that such a definition should be half-open, that is, it should include a set of features chosen by language users when performing particular speech acts. This way the synthetic definition is of dynamic character, which stands in stark contrast to static taxonomic definition.In short, this paper presents, first, a general framework for development of a synthetic definition, and, second, certain examples of definitions developed on the basis of the proposed framework.

The article's primary goal is to demonstrate the problems inherited in 'operationism - antioperationism' polemics. The opinions on operationism are divided. The term 'operationistic views' is a conceptual cluster, in which the components' meanings are imprecise. The term 'operational definition' shares the same quality. In general science methodology many distinguished social science methodologists continue developing and modifying operationism. Both the supporters and critics of operationism have succeeded in formulating a significant number of prominent methodological issues; operationism studies inspire thinking on the methods of concepts, indicators and techniques selection in science as well as on the reasoning for the choices made. I suggest to call the extension of operativeness postulate the operativity postulate. It reads: concepts are to be defined through descriptions of observable states of matter. Definition's operativity postulate shall be applied to definitions of indicated properties (in cases of definitional indicator) as well as to definitions of indicators (in case of correlation indicator).

Governance is a popular theoretical approach in the social sciences. However, it in-volves a number of definitional and theoretical problems. The issue of the ambiguity of the concept and the numerous attempts to recognize the complexity of reality in its framework is subject to criticism. A categorization of numerous definitions of govern-ance is proposed. The weaknesses of the governance approach as a theoretical framework in the social sciences are indicated: the inability to clearly indicate a causal entity in decision-making networks, wrongful diminution of the role of state agencies, its strong normative dimension. In the conclusions it is stated that governance is an attempt, albeit not very successful, but one and only at a holistic description of the hyperpluralist envi-ronment of public actors. The weakness of governance approach can be overcome by subjecting the phenomena to micro- or meso-level analysis.

The study compares the methods of defining concepts proposed by Anna Wierzbicka and Jerzy Bartmiński. Two variants of the maximal definition are identified: the extended variant, where the definition assumes the form of a narrative explication (Bartmiński), and the synthetic variant, with condensed content of the full definition (Wierzbicka, Bartmiński). Similarities and differences in the approaches of the two scholars to the problem of defining are discussed. The similarities include: the idea that a full understanding of a concept should be accounted for, the proposal that all linguistically, culturally, and communicatively relevant features be reconstructed, a facet-based ordering of the defining sentences, the importance of linguistic evidence for the features being included in the definition. The differences are identified in: the language being used, the use made of the data, the approach to the stability of features in the concept being defined, the ultimate shape (static or dynamic) of the reconstructed image.
Autorka dokonuje porównania sposobów eksplikowania pojęć przez Annę Wierzbicką i Jerzego Bartmińskiego. Wyodrębnia dwa warianty definicji maksymalnej – wariant rozbudowany o charakterze narracyjnej eksplikacji (Bartmiński) oraz wariant syntetyczny, zawierający skondensowane treści definicji pełnej (Wierzbicka, Bartmiński). Zestawia podobieństwa i różnice w podejściu do kwestii definiowania przez obydwoje badaczy. Podobieństwa łączy z realizacją postulatu pełnej analizy pojęcia i z odtwarzaniem w definicji wszystkich cech relewantnych językowo, kulturowo i komunikacyjnie, z fasetowym porządkowaniem zdań definiujących i z dbałością o „dowody językowe” dla powoływanych cech. Różnic upatruje w używanym języku, wykorzystywaniu podstaw materiałowych, podejściu do kwestii stabilizacji cech w definiensie oraz w ostatecznym – statycznym lub dynamicznym – kształcie zrekonstruowanego wyobrażenia.

This paper aims at determining the semantic representation of the expression błąd ('mistake'). The presented deliberations focus on a few questions that need to be answered in order to fulfil this aim. The first one relates to the isolation of linguistic units that represent the notion of błąd, and additionally, the issue of the characteristic lack of summetry between the functioning (including semantic funtioning) of the expressions błąd and błądzić / zbłądzić (błądzenie / zbłądzenie) ('to make a mistake / to have made a mistake (making a mistake / having made a mistake)'). The second question is associated with, as it appears, a commonly held differentiation into systemic mistakes (spelling mistakes, calculation mistakes, etc.), and mistakes made in life (mistakes relating to the decision resulting in someone's specific behaviour, e.g. undertaking a traineeship, resigning from work, taking out a loan) that - in the light of the hetero conclusions - seem neither necessary, nor needed. The third question refers to the basic issues in determining the meaning of the expressions, that is determining the obligatory features, and at the same time, sufficient ones so that one can say about something: to (jest) błąd ('it is a mistake'). According to the presented interpretation, błąd is the result of someone's controlled, intentional activity, leading to negative consequences. A readiness to evaluate something done by someone as błąd implies the possibility of choosing a particular action by someone who makes a mistake. The fourth question develops the idea of being aware of making a mistake, introduced earlier. Acknowledging the effect of someone's action as błąd is related to the perception of the doer as someone who may know that what he is doing may lead to an adverse result. The final question is in fact a synthesis of the solutions adopted with regards to the previous questions. This synthesis proposes an explication of the expression under discussion.

The usual way of characterising the notion of “musical postmodernism” is set out by the following claims: (1) a postmodern musical work corresponds to the postmodern worldview; the notion in question is closely connected with the etymology of its name (“postmodern” means, in any case, “of an era after a modern one”); (3) the characterisation of the postmodern worldview (and, thus, of a postmodern piece of music) ought to conform to the beliefs of the classics of the postmodern thought; (4) the postmodern repertoire includes mainly the works created after about 1970; (5) the most important features of these compositions are euphony, aleatoric indetermination, polistylistics, and repetitiveness. The notion governed by the claims (1) – (5) is highly unclear and provides little help for understanding musical phenomena. In order to make it more precise, the basis of its definition should be modified and the three following claims accepted: (A) a postmodern musical work is a musical representation of the postmodern worldview; (B) the existing musical repertoire contains some postmodern works; (C) a correct definition of musical postmodernism should enable to qualify at least some of the given composi-tions as postmodern or not. The conditions (A ) – (C) and the analysis of the postmodern worldview seem to suggest that a postmodern musical work is such of a precariously integrated structure. A postmodern work represents the undermining (“deconstruction”) of the crucial idea of the com-posing practice: the piece of music arises from the integration of sounds, not of a simple aggregation of them. The musical “deconstruction” can emerge when some of the important portions a work or certain aspects of it exhibit larger degree of integration than the work as a whole. It seems that some compositions by Ives and the final movement of Chopin’s Sonata in B minor Op. 35 are postmodern in the sense pointed above.

The aim of this paper is to analyse the definitions of the word wstyd ‘shame, embarrassment’ formulated by the students of the Faculty of Humanities at Maria Curie Skłodowska University in Lublin (overall, one hundred and fifty people). Before the analysis is undertaken, the author refers to what is known about this complex and equivocal feeling. Most of the students provided open, cognitive definitions of the word, but some of them also gave closed, structural and ostensive definitions. In the majority of the instances, the notion was defined in negative terms, but in a few cases its positive aspects were mentioned. In such cases, wstyd was described as a regulator of behaviour, as a factor which prevents people from acting in socially unacceptable ways. Hence such terms used in its description as a compass or a brake.

Who are those Swedes? The stereotype vision of the Swedes in the Polish language and folk culture The aim of the article is a rationalization of the Swedes in the day to day Polish language and folk culture, including the historical and cultural background. The sources from which the material was taken are: dictionaries of the Polish language, dialect dictionaries and mixed folk genres, etc. From the collected material it can be concluded that the Swedes are seen, from one point of view, as Godless invaders from a cold, northern country that had devastated Poland. This way of describing the Swedes is comparable to the characterisation of other foreign invaders, such as Tatars and Turks.

The reconstruction of the image of the child would have to begin with the ways of establishing the subject of research, namely, the basis of the verbal image of the child. Words and names distinguish and identify concepts and things, carry a certain meaning, and it is the context that sometimes allows to make the meaning more specific. However, in Korczak’s work it is not that easy, because there is no single, consistent definition of the child, there are many different explanations and explications of the concept in question depending on the situation and circumstances it was located by the author. I will try to show the meanings and connotations of the lexeme ‘child’ used in Korczak’s texts. It must be emphasized that the motif of the child is omnipresent in Korczak’s world, it acts as a dominant in each of the texts under analysis Nevertheless, putting these images together into a single, coherent picture seems impossible for several reasons. One of them is the fact that the child is involved in many different linguistic, cultural, social and generational contexts in Korczak’s prose. The other is the repertoire of linguistic means the author used to define the concept of the child and to create an image of the child to model the ways the child is perceived.

The paper seeks to show how the word „development” was understood in various sciences, especially in pedagogy. It turns out that „development” is a key term for many disciplines, such biology, psychology, sociology, or philosophy. The contexts in which the term can be used allow us to attempt an initial typology of how human development is understood in pedagogy, with a view to its subject, purpose, means, and effects. On the basis of the above criteria, the author proposes reporting definition of development and his projecting definition from the point of view of Christian pedagogy whose representative she is.

Opis:
The meaning of a word has a layered structure with the clearly distinguished center (prototype, lexical meaning) and – the further towards the peripheries – with semantic connotations more and more weak-established in the system. Giving-up ofthe purely structuralist understanding of connotations (verified by semantic and morphological derivatives, collocations, repeatable lexical oppositions, or various tests) has created a danger that semantically irrelevant components may be recognized as relevant qualities. The article proposes a rule for verification of weak connotations. Underlying the principle of internal motivation of qualities is the conviction that the meaning of a word is internally structured, while each quality, especially weak connotations, are motivated by the overall structure of meaning and are explained in the context of this structure.

The aim of this paper is to consider the question about the reasons of the indefinability of truth. We note at the start that a formula with one free variable can function as a truth predicate for a given set of sentences in two different (although related) senses: relative to a model and relative to a theory. By methods due to Alfred Tarski it can be shown that some sets of sentences are too large to admit a truth predicate (in any of the above senses); the limit case being the set of all sentences. The key question considered by us is: what does "too large" mean, i.e. which exactly sets of sentences don't have a truth predicate. We give a partial answer to this question: a set of sentences K has a truth predicate in an axiomatizable, consistent theory T iff for some natural number n, all the sentences belonging to K are equivalent (in T) to Sn sentences. Here the notion of a "too large" set receives a clear and definite sense. However, the case of a model-theoretic truth predicate seems to be more complicated: this second problem we leave as open, indicating only some possible directions of future research.
