    Opis:
    The purpose of this essay is to present Paul Cazin and his important role in the cultural relations between Poland and France from the early years of the XXth century. He discovered Polish language and literature through the contact with the great protector of artists Raczyński’s family. From the very beginning relationship and friendship were the base of his literary intrest and fascination. He managed to introduce Polish works into literary awarness of French readers. Cazin was the translator of Polish novels during three periodes — the “Young Poland” (before the I world war), the Independent Poland (1918–1939) and then the difficult time of the Soviet domination after 1945. In his lectures and critical studies he wanted to present to the French public the latin tradition and european origines of Polish civilisation. His greatest achievement was the Frech version of romantic masterpiece Pan Tadeusz (1934) and his last works concerning Breza’s novels (1962–1963).

    Wskazane już w 1930 roku w Katalogu druków polskich XVI-go wieku Bibljoteki Kapitulnej w Gnieźnie ks. Leona Formanowicza dziewięć woluminów kryjących rękopiśmienne wpisy dedykacyjne dla Wojciecha Baranowskiego uzupełnione zostały w trakcie projektu grantowego kierowanego przez doktora Piotra Pokorę o następne cztery księgi zawierające rękopiśmienne dedykacje od trzech osób. Omówione chronologicznie w tekście książkowe dary wójta ryskiego Johanna Tastiusa, sekretarza elektora brandenburskiego Michaela Giese oraz kardynała Cezara Baroniusza, które dostarczają informacji o zasięgu i kierunku nawiązywanych przez Baranowskiego relacji społecznych, zanalizowano na płaszczyźnie tegumentologicznej. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono próbie określenia charakteru dedykacji.
    The nine volumes, registered in the Catalogue of Polish prints from the 16th c. held in the Chapter Library in Gniezno by Rev. Leon Formanowicz and indicated as early as 1930, include hand-written dedication inscriptions dedicated to Wojciech Baranowski. These dedications have been complemented during a grant project headed by Dr. Piotr Pokora with four books that include hand- written dedications by three other persons. The gift books, discussed in a chronological order in the article, were donated by the Riga alderman Johann Tastius, secretary to the Brandenburg Elector Michael Giese and Cardinal Cezary Baroniusz and provide some additional information on the scope and directions of Primate Baranowski’s social relations. These relations, however, are analysed from the perspective of bookbinding studies. A particular attention is given to an attempt to define the nature of these dedications.

    Historyk, kartograf, teoretyk księgoznawstwa Joachim Lelewel (1786-1861) swoją bibliotekę prywatną zapisał w testamencie Uniwersytetowi Wileńskiemu. Dział Druków Rzadkich Biblioteki UW przechowuje kolekcję książek i broszur uczonego, liczącą 3684 pozycje (5400 tomów). Jest ona ciekawa ze względu na tematykę oraz zachowane proweniencje. W artykule zostały przedstawione dzieje powstania zbioru i okoliczności włączenia go do Biblioteki Uniwersytetu Wileńskiego, a także krótka charakterystyka tematyczna. Najwięcej uwagi poświęcono jednak różnym wpisom, pieczęciom i ekslibrisom. Sporą część kolekcji stanowią książki z dziedziny geografii, kosmografii, dziejów antycznych i czasów najnowszych oraz relacje z podróży do różnych krajów. Ważne miejsce zajmują też prace samego historyka. Zachowane na książkach notatki J. Lelewela ukazują go jako badacza o rozległych zainteresowaniach oraz świetnego bibliografa. Natomiast dedykacje potwierdzają, że był on naprawdę znanym i cenionym naukowcem. Proweniencje wielu osób i instytucji z różnych okresów wskazują na to, że J. Lelewelowi nie zależało na nabywaniu wyjątkowych, cennych książek, a zwracał on uwagę przede wszystkim na treść publikacji.
    Historian, cartographer, bibliographer, book scientist Joachim Lelewel (1786-1861) devised and bequeathed his private library to the Vilnius University. This collection, preserved in the Rare Book Department of the VU Library, consists of 3684 titles (5400 volumes). Though Lelewel was not a bibliophile, his book collection is interesting and valuable thematically and for the extant provenances in the books. The article reveals the history of its formation and eventual arrival at the Vilnius University, shortly discusses book topics and brings into focus all the different inscriptions, stamps and exlibrises. The majority of books deal with geography, cosmography, Antique, history of modern times, descriptions of travels in different countries. Works of Lelewel himself form a significant part of this collection as well. Lelewel’s own notes in the books themselves reveal that he was not only a researcher interested in a lot of areas of science, but also a great bibliographer. Moreover, the dedications to J. Lelewel paint him as a famous or appreciated scientist who intensively cooperated with the other researchers. The varied persons’ and institutions’ provenances from different times not only provide significant information about the former readers, their reading habits and interests, but also confirm that for Lelewel the content of the books – not the goal to aquire special or exclusive publications – was the most important thing.
